聞如是:
一時,諸上尊比丘,在波羅梨弗都盧城雞園中。世尊般涅槃不久,於是十支居士八城人多有財物,詣波羅梨弗都盧治生,於是十支居士八城人持錢財物盡買,盡買已極歡喜,得盈利極大歡喜意、極悅豫。出波羅梨弗都盧城已至雞園中,到已禮諸上尊比丘足,卻坐一面。彼十支居士八城人卻坐一面,時諸上尊比丘為說法勸進、等勸進,教授、等教授,以無量方便為說法勸進至等教授,等令歡喜已默然住。於是彼十支居士及八城人,聞諸上尊比丘所說法勸進至等歡喜已,白諸上尊比丘曰:「此諸上尊!今尊者阿難在何所住?我今欲見。」
「此居士!彼尊者阿難,在毗舍離獼猴水岸上,欲見者當往見之。」於是十支居士八城人,從坐起,禮諸上尊比丘足,繞諸上尊已,離諸上尊,還至彼尊者阿難所。到已,禮尊者阿難足已,卻坐一面。彼十支居士八城人卻住一面已,白尊者阿難曰:「此阿難!我欲有所問,聽我所問。」
「當問。居士!」聞已知之

我聽聞是這樣的:

The Buddha Speaks the Sutra of the Ten-Branch Householders and the Eight City People

Thus have I heard:
At one time, the venerable monks were residing in the Chicken Garden in the city of Pataliputra. Not long after the World Honored One's Parinirvana, the ten-branch householders and the eight city people, who possessed much wealth, came to Pataliputra to conduct business. They used all their money to purchase goods. Having completed their purchases, they were extremely happy, as they had made a great profit, and their minds were filled with joy and delight. After leaving Pataliputra, they arrived at the Chicken Garden. Upon arriving, they paid homage to the feet of the venerable monks and sat down to one side. As the ten-branch householders and the eight city people sat to one side, the venerable monks expounded the Dharma to them, encouraging them, equally encouraging them, instructing them, equally instructing them, using countless methods to expound the Dharma, encouraging them, until they were equally instructed, and having made them happy, they remained silent. Then, the ten-branch householders and the eight city people, having heard the Dharma expounded by the venerable monks, from encouragement to equal joy, said to the venerable monks: 'Venerable ones! Where is the venerable Ananda residing now? We wish to see him.'
'Householders! The venerable Ananda is at the Monkey Water Bank in Vaishali. Those who wish to see him may go there to see him.' Then, the ten-branch householders and the eight city people rose from their seats, paid homage to the feet of the venerable monks, circumambulated the venerable monks, and departed from the venerable monks, returning to where the venerable Ananda was. Upon arriving, they paid homage to the feet of the venerable Ananda and sat down to one side. As the ten-branch householders and the eight city people sat to one side, they said to the venerable Ananda: 'Ananda! We wish to ask you some questions. Please allow us to ask.'
'You may ask, householders!' Having heard this, Ananda understood.

「此尊者阿難!彼世尊有智有見,如來、無所著、等正覺,以眼見第一義說一法,聖弟子所住,于有餘處有漏盡意解脫不?」
「此居士!彼世尊有智有見,如來、無所著、等正覺,以眼見第一義說一法,聖弟子所住,有餘處有漏盡意解脫。」
「云何,尊者阿難!彼如來、無所著、等正覺,眼見第一義說一法,聖弟子所住,有餘處有漏盡意解脫?」
「此居士!聖弟子所聞,于淫解脫至住四禪正受住,彼依入法法相觀行止,彼依入法法相觀行止住,可有是處;彼所住得有漏盡,不住彼處得有漏盡;彼自樂法、彼自愛法、彼自習法、彼自敬法,得歡喜,五下結盡得化生,彼般涅槃成阿那含,不還此世間。是為,居士!彼世尊有智有見,如來、無所著、等正覺,眼見第一義說一法,聖弟子所住,有餘處有漏盡意解脫
『阿難尊者,那位世尊,有智慧,有見識,是如來、阿羅漢、正等覺,以眼見第一義而說一法,聖弟子所住之處,在其他地方是否能有漏盡意解脫呢?』 『這位居士,那位世尊,有智慧,有見識,是如來、阿羅漢、正等覺,以眼見第一義而說一法,聖弟子所住之處,在其他地方能有漏盡意解脫。』 『那麼,阿難尊者,那位如來、阿羅漢、正等覺,眼見第一義而說一法,聖弟子所住之處,在其他地方如何能有漏盡意解脫呢?』 『這位居士,聖弟子所聽聞的,從淫慾解脫,直至安住於四禪正受,他依此進入法,觀察法的相狀而止息,他依此進入法,觀察法的相狀而安住,這可能是有的;他所安住的地方能得有漏盡,不住在那個地方也能得有漏盡;他自己樂於法,自己喜愛法,自己修習法,自己尊敬法,從而獲得歡喜,五下分結盡除,得化生,他般涅槃成為阿那含,不再返回這個世間。這就是,居士,那位世尊有智慧,有見識,是如來、阿羅漢、正等覺,眼見第一義而說一法,聖弟子所住之處,在其他地方能有漏盡意解脫。』
'Venerable Ananda, does that Blessed One, wise and seeing, the Tathagata, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One, having seen with the eye the highest truth, teach one thing, in which a noble disciple dwells, and in another place, is there the extinction of defilements and liberation of mind?' 'This householder, that Blessed One, wise and seeing, the Tathagata, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One, having seen with the eye the highest truth, teaches one thing, in which a noble disciple dwells, and in another place, there is the extinction of defilements and liberation of mind.' 'How, Venerable Ananda, does that Tathagata, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One, having seen with the eye the highest truth, teach one thing, in which a noble disciple dwells, and in another place, is there the extinction of defilements and liberation of mind?' 'This householder, a noble disciple, having heard, is liberated from sensual desire, and dwells in the four jhanas, he enters into the Dhamma, observes the characteristics of the Dhamma and ceases, he enters into the Dhamma, observes the characteristics of the Dhamma and dwells, this is possible; where he dwells, he can attain the extinction of defilements, and not dwelling there, he can attain the extinction of defilements; he delights in the Dhamma, he loves the Dhamma, he practices the Dhamma, he respects the Dhamma, and thus attains joy, the five lower fetters are destroyed, he is reborn by transformation, he attains parinibbana and becomes an Anagami, not returning to this world. This, householder, is how that Blessed One, wise and seeing, the Tathagata, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One, having seen with the eye the highest truth, teaches one thing, in which a noble disciple dwells, and in another place, there is the extinction of defilements and liberation of mind.'
。複次,居士!聖弟子所聞,意與慈俱滿一方已正受住,如是二三四上下一切諸方,意與慈俱,無怨無二無恚,極廣極大無量極分別,滿諸方已正受住,如是意與悲喜護俱滿一切諸方已正受住,彼依入法法相觀行止,彼依入法法相觀行止住,可有是處,住彼已得有漏盡;不住彼處得有漏盡,若彼以法樂、以法愛,習行法敬法,得歡喜法,五下結盡得化生,于彼處般涅槃成阿那含,不還此世間。是為,居士!彼世尊有智有見,如來、無所著、等正覺,眼見第一義、說第一法,聖弟子所住,有餘處有漏盡意解脫。複次,居士!聖弟子所聞,度一切色相,至有想無想處正受住,彼依入法法相觀行止,至有漏盡意解脫。」
於是十支居士八城人,白尊者阿難曰:「甚奇!尊者阿難!我等問尊者阿難一甘露門,而為說十二甘露門。甚多!尊者阿難!於此十二甘露門,依各各甘露門,當安隱自御之。猶若,尊者阿難!離城村不遠有重閣,若重閣房邊有十二門,或有人入中少有所為,或有人生無有義、不饒益、不安隱、不快樂,或有以火燒重閣,此尊者阿難!彼人於十二門,隨彼意安隱出。如是,甚奇!尊者阿難!我等問尊者阿難一甘露門,而為說十二甘露門
現代漢語譯本:再者,居士!聖弟子所聽聞,心與慈愛同在,充滿一方,已安住于正受之中。如此,二三四方,上下一切諸方,心與慈愛同在,沒有怨恨,沒有敵意,沒有嗔怒,極其廣大,極其無限,極其分別,充滿諸方,已安住于正受之中。如此,心與悲、喜、護同在,充滿一切諸方,已安住于正受之中。他們依據入法、法相進行觀行止,他們依據入法、法相進行觀行止住,這是有可能的,安住於此,便能證得有漏盡;不安住於此,也能證得有漏盡。如果他們以法為樂,以法為愛,習行法,敬重法,獲得歡喜法,五下結盡,得化生,于彼處般涅槃,成為阿那含,不再返回此世間。這就是,居士!那位世尊具有智慧和見解,如來、無所著、等正覺,親眼見到第一義,宣說第一法,聖弟子所安住之處,有餘處能證得有漏盡的意解脫。再者,居士!聖弟子所聽聞,度過一切色相,到達有想無想處,安住于正受之中。他們依據入法、法相進行觀行止,直至有漏盡的意解脫。 於是,十支居士,八城人,對尊者阿難說:『真是太奇妙了!尊者阿難!我們向您請教一個甘露門,您卻為我們說了十二個甘露門。真是太多了!尊者阿難!在這十二個甘露門中,依據各個甘露門,都應當能安穩地自我駕馭。就像,尊者阿難!離城村不遠的地方有一座重閣,如果重閣的房間旁邊有十二個門,或許有人進入其中,少有所為,或許有人生起沒有意義、沒有饒益、不安穩、不快樂的事情,或許有人用火焚燒重閣。尊者阿難!這個人可以通過十二個門,隨意地安穩地出去。就像這樣,真是太奇妙了!尊者阿難!我們向您請教一個甘露門,您卻為我們說了十二個甘露門。』
English version: Furthermore, householder! A noble disciple, having heard, abides with a mind imbued with loving-kindness, pervading one direction, having established themselves in right concentration. Likewise, in the second, third, and fourth directions, above, below, and in all directions, their mind is imbued with loving-kindness, without resentment, without ill-will, without anger, exceedingly vast, exceedingly immeasurable, exceedingly expansive, pervading all directions, having established themselves in right concentration. Likewise, their mind is imbued with compassion, joy, and equanimity, pervading all directions, having established themselves in right concentration. They, relying on the entry into the Dharma, observe the characteristics of the Dharma, and practice cessation. They, relying on the entry into the Dharma, observe the characteristics of the Dharma, and abide in cessation. It is possible that, abiding thus, they attain the extinction of the outflows; not abiding thus, they also attain the extinction of the outflows. If they delight in the Dharma, love the Dharma, practice the Dharma, respect the Dharma, and attain joy in the Dharma, they exhaust the five lower fetters and are reborn spontaneously, attaining final Nirvana in that place, becoming an Anagami, not returning to this world. This, householder, is how that Blessed One, with wisdom and vision, the Tathagata, the Unattached One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, having seen the ultimate truth, proclaimed the ultimate Dharma, and where a noble disciple abides, there is a place where the extinction of the outflows is attained through the liberation of the mind. Furthermore, householder! A noble disciple, having heard, transcends all perceptions of form, and abides in the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, having established themselves in right concentration. They, relying on the entry into the Dharma, observe the characteristics of the Dharma, and practice cessation, until the extinction of the outflows through the liberation of the mind. Then, the ten-limbed householder, the people of the eight cities, said to the venerable Ananda: 'How marvelous! Venerable Ananda! We asked you about one gate of nectar, and you have spoken of twelve gates of nectar. It is so much! Venerable Ananda! In these twelve gates of nectar, relying on each gate of nectar, one should be able to securely govern oneself. Just as, Venerable Ananda, not far from a town or village, there is a multi-storied mansion, and if there are twelve doors beside the rooms of the multi-storied mansion, perhaps someone enters it and does something of little consequence, or perhaps someone gives rise to things that are meaningless, unbeneficial, insecure, and unhappy, or perhaps someone sets fire to the multi-storied mansion. Venerable Ananda! That person can go out securely through any of the twelve doors as they wish. Just like that, how marvelous! Venerable Ananda! We asked you about one gate of nectar, and you have spoken of twelve gates of nectar.'
。此尊者阿難!為甚多,當於十二甘露門,依各各甘露門各各當出之。此尊者阿難!彼諸婆羅門與惡法俱?施與師物;況當我等今于大師,當不以財施之?」於是十支居士八城人,于其夜饌具凈妙飲食。于其夜饌具凈妙飲食已,隨時敷座。敷座已,請雞園中比丘僧、毗舍離比丘僧皆悉聚之。雞園中諸比丘僧、毗舍離諸比丘僧皆悉聚已,以凈妙飲食手自授與。以凈妙飲食手授與已,知食訖,收攝缽器,行澡水,以五百種物買房,施與尊者阿難以為私有。彼尊者阿難施與招提僧。
阿難如是說。十支居士八城人聞尊者阿難所說,歡喜而樂

English version: 『Venerable Ananda!』 they said, 『For many reasons, we should give according to what is due from each of the twelve gates of ambrosia. Venerable Ananda! Those Brahmins, even though they are associated with evil practices, still give material things to their teachers; how much more should we, now that we are facing the Great Master, not offer him material things?』 Then, the ten-limbed householders and the people of the eight cities prepared clean and exquisite food that night. After preparing the clean and exquisite food, they set up seats at the appropriate time. After setting up the seats, they invited the monastic community of the Chicken Garden and the monastic community of Vaishali to gather together. After the monastic community of the Chicken Garden and the monastic community of Vaishali had gathered, they personally distributed the clean and exquisite food to the monastic community.
