佛說婆羅門避死經

聞如是：

一時，婆伽婆在舍衛城祇樹給孤獨園。爾時，世尊告諸比丘：「昔有四婆羅門仙人，精進修善法五通，常恐畏死。時，四婆羅門仙人，精進修善法五通，便作是念：『我等當住何處永存在世？』時，彼有一婆羅門，精進修善法，有大神力五通，便入空中，『于中則無有死。』彼入空者便命過。第二婆羅門，精進修善法五通，畏死便入大海中，『我于海中則無有死。』彼即于海中命過。第三婆羅門，精進修善法，有大威勢五通，畏死便入山腹，即于彼命終。彼第四婆羅門，精進修善法五通，有大威勢，畏死便入地，『我于彼當脫不死。』便於地命過。

「時世尊以天眼見清凈無瑕，觀彼四婆羅門精進修善法，有大威勢五通畏死，一人處虛空于彼命過，一人入海亦于彼命過，一人入山腹于彼命過，一人入地于彼命過。爾時，世尊見彼四婆羅門精進修善法五通有大威勢，便說偈言：

「非空非海中，　　非入山石間，無有地方所，　　脫之不受死。」

爾時，比丘聞佛所說，歡喜奉行

English version The Buddha Speaks of the Brahman's Escape from Death Sutra Translated by the An Shigao, a Shramana from Parthia during the Later Han Dynasty Thus have I heard: At one time, the Bhagavan was in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti. At that time, the World Honored One told the bhikshus: 'In the past, there were four Brahman ascetics who diligently cultivated good dharmas and possessed the five supernormal powers, but they were constantly afraid of death.' At that time, these four Brahman ascetics, diligently cultivating good dharmas and possessing the five supernormal powers, thought: 'Where should we dwell to live forever in the world?' Then, one of the Brahmans, diligently cultivating good dharmas and possessing great divine power and the five supernormal powers, entered the sky, thinking: 'There will be no death in the sky.' As a result, this Brahman who entered the sky passed away. The second Brahman, diligently cultivating good dharmas and possessing the five supernormal powers, fearing death, entered the great sea, thinking: 'I will not die in the sea.' As a result, he passed away in the sea. The third Brahman, diligently cultivating good dharmas and possessing great power and the five supernormal powers, fearing death, entered the belly of a mountain, and as a result, he passed away there. The fourth Brahman, diligently cultivating good dharmas and possessing the five supernormal powers and great power, fearing death, entered the earth, thinking: 'I should be able to escape death there.' As a result, he passed away in the earth. 'At that time, the World Honored One, with his pure and flawless heavenly eye, observed that the four Brahmans diligently cultivated good dharmas, possessed great power and the five supernormal powers, yet feared death. One passed away in the sky, one passed away in the sea, one passed away in the belly of a mountain, and one passed away in the earth.' At that time, the World Honored One, seeing that the four Brahmans diligently cultivated good dharmas, possessed the five supernormal powers, and had great power, spoke a verse: 'Not in the sky, not in the sea, not in the mountains or rocks, there is no place where one can escape and not be subject to death.' At that time, the bhikshus, hearing what the Buddha had said, joyfully practiced it.
