我憶過去無量劫,  有王名曰素馱娑! 其王一時出遊山,  群臣部從獵蟲獸, 忽逢雷雹惡風起,  諸人分散悉驚惶, 王獨走入深山林,  臨河蘇息無人伴, 牝母師子在山藪,  見王獨坐逼王身。 眾生惡業夙緣故,  轉種地獄苦無量。 王與師子夙因緣,  欲情俱起共交會, 多劫食肉殺生者,  夙習故入師子胎, 便生人身師子首,  斑足丈夫如獸王。 長成迅速甚猛利,  問母:「我是誰體胤?」 其母師子答子云:  「汝父竭國素馱王。」 子聞是已速往尋,  摩竭提國父王所, 引現具啟往因緣,  王聞自悟收為子。 然為父王年老邁,  登樓冊子立為王, 號為師子素馱娑,  御殿朝政理臣民。 師子展轉惡習故,  多劫食肉害眾生, 雖居人王不食谷,  唯餐鳥獸水陸蟲。 供進雜肉時將至,  闥拔獸肉狗銜將, 闕肉廚人懼王斬,  走出捕捉小嬰孩, 密截頭項並手足,  全煮鑊中供進王

現代漢語譯本 我回憶過去無量劫時,有一位國王名叫素馱娑! 這位國王有一次出遊山林,群臣部下跟隨他打獵捕捉鳥獸。 忽然遇到雷雹和狂風,眾人四散奔逃,都驚慌失措。 國王獨自走入深山老林,在河邊休息,身邊沒有一個人陪伴。 一頭母獅子在山林中,看見國王獨自坐著,便逼近國王。 眾生因為過去的惡業因緣,會轉生到地獄遭受無量的痛苦。 國王與獅子有宿世的因緣,情慾同時產生,便交合在一起。 多劫以來吃肉殺生的緣故,過去的習氣使他投生到獅子的胎中。 於是生出人身獅子頭的怪胎,長著斑紋的腳,像獸中之王。 他迅速長大,非常勇猛,問母親:『我是誰的後代?』 他的獅子母親回答說:『你的父親是竭國的素馱王。』 兒子聽后,立刻前去尋找,到了摩竭提國他父親的住處。 他現身並詳細說明了前因後果,國王聽后自己醒悟,便收他為兒子。 因為父王年老體衰,便登上高樓,冊立他為國王。 號為師子素馱娑,在朝廷處理政事,治理臣民。 師子因為輾轉的惡習,多劫以來吃肉殘害眾生。 雖然身為國王,卻不吃五穀,只吃鳥獸水陸的蟲類。 到了進獻各種肉食的時候,一隻名叫闥拔的獸肉被狗叼走了。 缺少肉食的廚師害怕被國王斬首,便跑出去抓了一個小嬰兒。 秘密地砍下他的頭和手腳,全部煮在鍋里進獻給國王。

English version I recall in the immeasurable past, there was a king named Sudhāsa! This king once went out to the mountains, his ministers and subordinates followed him to hunt and capture birds and beasts. Suddenly, they encountered thunder, hail, and strong winds, and the people scattered in panic. The king went alone into the deep mountains and forests, resting by the river with no one to accompany him. A lioness in the mountains saw the king sitting alone and approached him. Due to the evil karma of sentient beings, they will be reborn in hell to suffer immeasurable pain. The king and the lion had a past life connection, and their desires arose simultaneously, so they mated. Because of eating meat and killing for many kalpas, his past habits caused him to be born in the womb of a lion. Thus, a strange being with a human body and a lion's head was born, with spotted feet, like the king of beasts. He grew up quickly and was very fierce. He asked his mother, 'Whose descendant am I?' His lion mother replied, 'Your father is King Sudhāsa of the kingdom of Kāla.' Upon hearing this, the son immediately went to find his father in the kingdom of Magadha. He appeared and explained the cause and effect in detail. The king, upon hearing this, realized the truth and accepted him as his son. Because the father king was old and frail, he ascended the tower and appointed him as king. He was named Lion Sudhāsa, and he managed the affairs of the court and governed the people. Due to the recurring evil habits of the lion, he had been eating meat and harming sentient beings for many kalpas. Although he was a king, he did not eat grains, but only birds, beasts, and aquatic insects. When it was time to present various meats, a piece of meat called Tāḍa was taken away by a dog. The cook, fearing that he would be beheaded by the king for the missing meat, ran out and grabbed a small infant. He secretly cut off the infant's head and limbs, and cooked them all in a pot to present to the king.

。 王食其肉甚將美,  長嗜肉味狀燒薪, 王問食官是何肉?  食官惶怖具啟王, 王赦其罪勿憂愁,  每日供進是肉來。 廚人既承大王教,  變服每日盜他兒, 積年竊盜他男女,  如行羅剎復如鷹, 國內人民並持服,  為失子息各慞惶, 兩兩執手互相問,  氣噎無處告皇天。 邑人守捕獲其賊,  廚賊訴云:「不自由。」 國人聞此啟諫王,  王聞忿怒大嗔責: 「比日令密進孩肉,  從今每自料一人。」 親戚、臣民次第食,  如羊欄內被牽將, 闔國絕望無控告,  普集王衙欲除君。 王上高臺祈神鬼:  「請翅飛騰免斯難, 若得翅飛取諸方,  百國王頭祭山神。」 師子猛獸惡習故,  立得翅飛接諸王, 囚縶高峰峻巖上,  已得九十九國王, 惟少一王擬當祭,  師子而下更尋求。 於時王舍菩薩王,  號為聞月園苑浴, 師子見王坐玉碇,  下捉右臂欲擒將。 爾時聞月王悲泣,  師子問王:「何故啼?」 「我聞大王勇猛智,  菩薩不顧身命財

國王吃肉覺得非常美味, 長期嗜好吃肉,像燒柴一樣(消耗肉)。 國王問膳食官這是什麼肉? 膳食官驚恐地向國王稟告, 國王赦免了他的罪過,讓他不要憂愁, 每天都進貢這種肉。 廚師接受了大王的命令, 喬裝打扮,每天偷盜別人的孩子, 多年來偷盜別人的男女, 像羅剎一樣,又像老鷹一樣(兇猛)。 國內人民都穿著喪服, 因為失去子女而各自驚慌, 兩人拉著手互相詢問, 哽咽得說不出話,無法向老天訴說。 城邑的人守衛抓住了這個賊, 廚師賊辯解說:『身不由己。』 國人聽到這些,向國王進諫, 國王聽了非常憤怒,大聲斥責: 『之前命令秘密進獻孩童的肉,』 『從今以後,每天自己準備一個人。』 親戚、臣民依次被吃掉, 像羊圈裡的羊被牽走一樣, 全國絕望,無人敢控告, 大家聚集在王宮前,想要除掉國王。 國王登上高臺,向神鬼祈禱: 『請賜予翅膀,讓我飛離這個災難,』 『如果能長出翅膀飛到各處,』 『就用一百個國王的頭顱祭祀山神。』 獅子因為兇猛的習性, 立刻長出翅膀,抓來了各國的國王, 把他們囚禁在高聳的山崖上, 已經抓來了九十九個國王, 只差一個國王準備祭祀, 獅子又飛下去尋找。 這時,王舍城的菩薩國王, 號為聞月,在園林里沐浴, 獅子看見國王坐在玉石上, 就抓住他的右臂想要擒拿。 這時,聞月王悲傷地哭泣, 獅子問國王:『你為什麼哭?』 『我聽說大王您勇猛而有智慧,』 『菩薩是不顧惜自己的生命和財產的。』

The king found the meat very delicious, He had a long-term craving for meat, consuming it like burning firewood. The king asked the food official what kind of meat it was? The food official reported to the king in fear, The king pardoned his crime and told him not to worry, And to provide this meat every day. The cook accepted the king's order, Disguised himself, and stole other people's children every day, For many years, he stole other people's sons and daughters, Like a Rakshasa, and like an eagle (fierce). The people of the country all wore mourning clothes, Because they lost their children, they were all in panic, Two people held hands and asked each other, Choked with sobs, unable to tell the heavens. The people of the city guarded and caught the thief, The cook thief argued: 'I have no choice.' When the people of the country heard this, they advised the king, The king was furious and scolded loudly: 'Before, I ordered to secretly offer the meat of children,' 'From now on, prepare one person yourself every day.' Relatives and subjects were eaten in turn, Like sheep being led away in a sheepfold, The whole country was in despair, and no one dared to accuse him, Everyone gathered in front of the palace, wanting to remove the king. The king ascended the high platform and prayed to the gods and ghosts: 'Please grant me wings so I can fly away from this disaster,' 'If I can grow wings and fly everywhere,' 'I will sacrifice the heads of a hundred kings to the mountain god.' Because of the lion's fierce nature, He immediately grew wings and captured the kings of various countries, Imprisoned them on high cliffs, He had already captured ninety-nine kings, Only one king was missing for the sacrifice, The lion flew down again to search. At this time, the Bodhisattva king of Rajagriha, Named Wen Yue, was bathing in the garden, The lion saw the king sitting on a jade stone, And grabbed his right arm to capture him. At this time, King Wen Yue cried sadly, The lion asked the king: 'Why are you crying?' 'I heard that Your Majesty is brave and wise,' 'A Bodhisattva does not care about his own life and property.'

。」 「若也如是當應忍,  何得苦憂不自由?」 聞月答王師子云:  「一切憂苦不過慈, 修行菩薩大慈悲,  我今憂彼百國王, 一生豪貴主天下,  今日囚縶命欲終; 我又百國求佛法,  請得法師遠方來, 未及聽法親授教,  國人渴仰未曾聞, 汝舍施我一七日,  供養三寶聽法音, 集會群臣囑累法,  八日當自迎大王。」 以其菩薩無詐妄,  師子許王七日期, 八日聞月出城迎,  捨身施待師子王。 於時師子如雲現,  擒接聞月對眾將。 師子問王:「可無畏?  敢出我前如獸王?」 聞月答王師子言:  「是身虛假施大王, 寧舍百千身命財,  不犯前言失汝期。」 和顏悅色方便語,  聽我少時說因緣: 「汝欲祭祀邪神鬼,  諸部善神與汝殃, 十方佛剎諸賢聖,  多劫汝不更聞名; 是身虛假合因緣,  命若電光無停住, 五根六識無人我,  眼耳鼻舌觸為因, 如幻變化見眾像,  眾生妄想執為真, 從頭至足驗此軀,  無有一事是常住, 如水中泡剎那滅,  老、病、死、苦亦無常, 汝今雖肉養其身,  究竟無依無善路, 殺生無量食啖肉,  展轉受苦惡道中

『如果真是這樣,就應該忍受,為何如此苦惱不自在呢?』 聞月回答師子王說:『一切憂愁痛苦都比不上慈悲,修行菩薩道的人要具有大慈大悲之心。我現在憂慮那一百個國王,他們一生豪富,主宰天下,如今卻被囚禁,性命將終。』 『我又爲了這百國求取佛法,請來了遠方的法師,還沒來得及聽法,親受教誨,國人也正渴望聽聞佛法。請您寬限我七天時間,讓我供養三寶,聽聞佛法,並向群臣囑託佛法,八天後我自會迎接大王。』 因為菩薩不會有欺詐虛妄的行為,師子王答應了他七天的期限。到了第八天,聞月出城迎接,捨棄自己的身體來等待師子王。 這時,師子王如雲一般出現,擒住聞月,當著眾將的面。 師子王問:『你難道不怕嗎?竟敢像獸王一樣出現在我面前?』 聞月回答師子王說:『這身體是虛幻的,我把它施捨給大王。我寧願捨棄百千的生命和財產,也不會違背之前的諾言,失約於你。』 他面色和悅,用方便的語言說:『請聽我稍作解釋,說說其中的因緣:』 『你想要祭祀邪神鬼怪,各部善神會降禍於你,十方佛剎的諸位賢聖,你多劫都將無法聽聞他們的名號。』 『這身體是虛幻的,由因緣和合而成,生命如閃電般短暫,沒有停留。五根六識中沒有自我,眼耳鼻舌觸是其成因,如幻化一般顯現各種景象,眾生妄想執著為真實。』 『從頭到腳審視這個身體,沒有一件事是常住不變的,如水中的泡沫剎那間就破滅,老、病、死、苦也是無常的。你現在雖然用肉來滋養身體,但最終是無所依靠,沒有善路可走。殺生無數,吃肉無數,只會輾轉在惡道中受苦。』

'If it is so, then one should endure it, why be so distressed and not free?' Hearing Moon replied to King Lion, 'All sorrows and sufferings are not greater than compassion. Those who cultivate the Bodhisattva path should have great compassion. I am now worried about those hundred kings, who were wealthy and ruled the world, but are now imprisoned and their lives are about to end.' 'I also sought the Dharma for these hundred kingdoms and invited a Dharma master from afar. Before they could hear the Dharma and receive teachings, the people of the kingdom are eager to hear the Dharma. Please grant me seven days to make offerings to the Three Jewels, listen to the Dharma, and entrust the Dharma to the ministers. On the eighth day, I will come to greet the great king myself.' Because the Bodhisattva has no deceit or falsehood, King Lion granted him a seven-day period. On the eighth day, Hearing Moon went out of the city to greet him, sacrificing his body to wait for King Lion. At that time, King Lion appeared like a cloud, captured Hearing Moon, and faced the generals. King Lion asked, 'Are you not afraid? How dare you appear before me like a beast king?' Hearing Moon replied to King Lion, 'This body is illusory, and I offer it to the great king. I would rather give up a hundred thousand lives and possessions than break my previous promise and fail to meet you.' With a pleasant expression and using skillful language, he said, 'Please listen to my brief explanation and the reasons behind it:' 'If you want to worship evil gods and ghosts, the good gods of all realms will bring disaster upon you. The sages of the Buddha lands in the ten directions, you will not hear their names for many kalpas.' 'This body is illusory, formed by the combination of causes and conditions. Life is as fleeting as lightning, without any permanence. There is no self in the five senses and six consciousnesses. The eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and touch are the causes. Like illusions, various images appear, and sentient beings mistakenly cling to them as real.' 'Examining this body from head to toe, there is nothing that is permanent. Like a bubble in water, it disappears in an instant. Old age, sickness, death, and suffering are also impermanent. Although you now nourish your body with meat, ultimately there is no reliance, and no good path to follow. Killing countless lives and eating countless meat, you will only suffer in the evil realms.'

爾時聞月無量偈,  勸化師子素馱王, 師子聞已漸迴心,  聽聞無我實相體。 師子問王:「如何計?  祭祀無罪得神歡。」 聞月答云:「辦素味,  無辜凈食祭祀天。」 師子依命祭山神,  捨身施與聞月王, 山中囚禁諸王者,  並皆付囑聞月將。 聞月各引還本國,  依舊安置理人民, 並將師子素馱王,  摩竭提國坐本宮, 和合諸臣及萬姓,  合國斷肉不殺生。 爾時聞月發大愿:  「愿我成等正覺時, 解脫一切普含生,  此等諸王同成佛, 所授師子王妙法,  愿其重罪得云銷。」

又念:「過去阿僧祇劫,釋提桓因處忉利宮,以於過去食肉余習,變身為鷹而逐于鴿。我時作王,名曰尸毗,愍念其鴿,枰身割肉代鴿償命。尸毗王者,我身是也,后當作王名曰聞月;其時帝釋化為鷹者,后當作王師子素馱。釋試我故尚生惡道,況餘眾生無慚專殺,食啖血肉無止足時。」

一切眾生從無始來,靡不曾作父母親屬,易生鳥獸,如何忍食?夫食肉者,歷劫之中生於鳥獸,食他血肉展轉償命。若生人間專殺嗜肉,死墮阿鼻無時暫息。若人能斷一生食肉,乃至成佛無由再食

當時,聞月聽了無數的偈語,勸化師子素馱王。 師子王聽后漸漸回心轉意,開始聽聞無我的真實本體。 師子王問聞月:『應該如何做?祭祀才能無罪並得到神靈的歡喜?』 聞月回答說:『準備素食,用無辜的乾淨食物祭祀天神。』 師子王按照聞月的指示祭祀山神,並將自己的身體獻給聞月王。 山中被囚禁的各位國王,都一併託付給聞月將軍。 聞月分別帶領他們回到各自的國家,讓他們依舊安頓好百姓,治理國家。 並將師子素馱王帶回摩竭提國,讓他坐回王宮。 聯合各位大臣和所有百姓,全國上下斷絕肉食,不再殺生。 當時,聞月發下大愿:『愿我成佛時,解脫一切包含生命的眾生,這些國王都能一同成佛。 我所傳授給師子王的妙法,愿能使其重罪得以消散。』 又想到:『在過去無數劫前,釋提桓因在忉利天宮,因為過去吃肉的習氣,化身為鷹追逐鴿子。我當時做國王,名叫尸毗,憐憫那隻鴿子,用自己的身體割肉代替鴿子償命。尸毗王就是我,後來將做國王名叫聞月;當時帝釋化為鷹,後來將做國王師子素馱。釋提桓因爲了試探我尚且墮入惡道,何況其他眾生毫無慚愧,專門殺生,吃血肉沒有止境。』 一切眾生從無始以來,沒有不曾做過父母親屬的,轉生為鳥獸,怎麼忍心吃它們呢?吃肉的人,在無數劫中會轉生為鳥獸,吃其他血肉,輾轉償命。如果轉生為人,專門殺生嗜好肉食,死後會墮入阿鼻地獄,沒有片刻的休息。如果有人能斷絕一生吃肉,乃至成佛都不會再吃肉。

At that time, Wen Yue heard countless verses and persuaded King Shizi Sutuo. King Shizi gradually changed his mind after listening and began to hear the true essence of no-self. King Shizi asked Wen Yue: 'What should be done? How can sacrifices be without sin and please the gods?' Wen Yue replied: 'Prepare vegetarian food and use innocent, clean food to sacrifice to the gods.' King Shizi followed Wen Yue's instructions to sacrifice to the mountain gods and offered his body to King Wen Yue. All the kings imprisoned in the mountains were entrusted to General Wen Yue. Wen Yue led them back to their respective countries, allowing them to settle their people and govern their countries as before. He also brought King Shizi Sutuo back to the Magadha kingdom, allowing him to return to his palace. He united the ministers and all the people, and the whole country stopped eating meat and killing. At that time, Wen Yue made a great vow: 'May I, when I become a Buddha, liberate all sentient beings, and may these kings all become Buddhas together. May the wonderful Dharma I have taught to King Shizi dispel his heavy sins.' He also thought: 'In countless past kalpas, Shakra Devanam Indra was in the Trayastrimsha Heaven. Due to the habit of eating meat in the past, he transformed into a hawk and chased a pigeon. I was a king at that time, named Shibi, and out of compassion for the pigeon, I cut off my own flesh to repay the pigeon's life. King Shibi was me, and later I will be a king named Wen Yue; at that time, Shakra transformed into a hawk, and later he will be King Shizi Sutuo. Shakra Devanam Indra fell into evil paths just to test me, how much more so for other sentient beings who have no shame, who specialize in killing, and who eat flesh and blood without end?' All sentient beings, from beginningless time, have all been our parents and relatives. They are reborn as birds and beasts, how can we bear to eat them? Those who eat meat will be reborn as birds and beasts in countless kalpas, eating the flesh and blood of others, repaying their lives in turn. If they are reborn as humans and specialize in killing and eating meat, they will fall into Avici hell after death, without a moment's rest. If a person can abstain from eating meat for their entire life, they will never eat meat again, even after becoming a Buddha.
