佛說老母女六英經

宋天竺三藏求那跋陀羅譯

佛為世尊,功德巍巍,愍念眾生,為之傷悲。時與弟子、大士相追,止處樂音,廣有所開。

有一母人,貧老傴僂,長跪問佛:「五陰、六衰會合我身,悉為是誰?來何所從?去何所歸?惟愿世尊為我思惟!」

佛言:「善哉!宜識其幾。諸法因緣,識之者希。譬如鉆火,兩木相揩。火不從鉆,亦不從燧。火出其間,赫赫甚輝,還燒其木,木盡消微。亦如捶鼓,其音哀摧。聲不從革,亦不從捶。諸法如是,因緣相推。亦如天雨,風雲、雷電合會作雨,不獨龍威。諸法如是,文亦如是。譬如畫師,調和彩色,因素加畫,無形不即,皆須緣合,非獨一力。」

母人聞經,歡喜傾側,即得法忍,身不疲極。

阿難啟陳:「此何母人?問佛諸法生死所從,心開意解,即得道真?」

佛語阿難:「聽我所言。前過去佛,名曰拘樓秦。爾時此母是我之親。我行學道,戀閉我身,憂思不食一日之間。緣此恩愛,五百世貧。今我得佛,萬福皆臻,眾生無量,清凈佛前。過六十億劫當得作佛,號薩婆,國名多華

佛陀是世尊,功德巍峨,憐憫眾生,為他們感到悲傷。當時佛陀與弟子、菩薩們一起,停留在充滿音樂的地方,廣泛地開示佛法。

有一位貧窮衰老、佝僂著身子的老婦人,長跪著問佛陀:『五陰(色、受、想、行、識)、六衰(眼、耳、鼻、舌、身、意)會合在我身上,這一切是誰造成的?從哪裡來?又將歸向哪裡?希望世尊能為我開示!』

佛陀說:『很好!應該認識其中的道理。明白諸法因緣的人很少。譬如鉆木取火,兩塊木頭互相摩擦。火不是從鉆木中來,也不是從燧石中來。火從摩擦中產生,光芒熾盛,反過來燃燒木頭,直到木頭完全燒盡。又如敲鼓,鼓聲悲哀悽涼。聲音不是從鼓皮中來,也不是從敲擊中來。諸法也是這樣,因緣互相推動而生。又如天下雨,是風、云、雷、電聚合在一起形成的,不是單單龍的力量。諸法也是這樣,道理也是如此。譬如畫師,調和各種顏色,憑藉顏料加上繪畫技巧,各種形象立刻顯現,都需要因緣聚合,不是單單一種力量。』

老婦人聽了佛經,歡喜不已,立刻證得法忍(對佛法的認可和接受),身心不再感到疲憊。

阿難請示佛陀:『這位老婦人是誰?她向佛陀請問諸法生死所從來的道理,心意開解,立刻證得了真道?』

佛陀告訴阿難:『聽我說。過去有一尊佛,名叫拘樓秦佛(Kakusandha Buddha)。那時這位老婦人是我的親人。我修行學道時,她因為愛戀我而封閉自己,憂愁思念,甚至有一天不吃不喝。因為這份恩愛,使我五百世貧窮。現在我成了佛,萬福都已圓滿,無量眾生聚集在清凈的佛前。經過六十億劫后,她將成佛,佛號為薩婆(Sarva),國名叫多華。』

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of the Buddha's Discourse on the Old Woman and the Six Indriya

The Buddha, the World Honored One, possessed majestic merits and virtues, and out of compassion for sentient beings, felt sorrow for them. At that time, he was with his disciples and Bodhisattvas, staying in a place filled with music, where he extensively expounded the Dharma.

There was an old woman, poor, aged, and hunched over, who knelt and asked the Buddha: 'The five skandhas (form, feeling, perception, mental formations, consciousness) and the six senses (eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind) converge in my body. Who is responsible for all of this? Where do they come from? And where will they go? I beseech the World Honored One to enlighten me!'

The Buddha said: 'Excellent! It is proper to understand the principles within them. Few understand the causes and conditions of all dharmas. For example, when drilling for fire, two pieces of wood rub against each other. The fire does not come from the drill, nor does it come from the tinder. The fire arises from the friction between them, blazing brightly, and in turn burns the wood, until the wood is completely consumed. Another example is striking a drum, its sound mournful and desolate. The sound does not come from the drum skin, nor does it come from the striking. All dharmas are like this, arising from the mutual promotion of causes and conditions. Another example is when it rains, it is formed by the convergence of wind, clouds, thunder, and lightning, not solely by the power of the dragon. All dharmas are like this, and the principle is the same. For example, a painter mixes various colors, and relying on the pigments and painting skills, various forms immediately appear. All require the convergence of causes and conditions, not just a single force.'

Upon hearing the sutra, the old woman was overjoyed and immediately attained Dharma-kshanti (acceptance and endurance of the Dharma), her body and mind no longer feeling weary.

Ananda inquired of the Buddha: 'Who is this old woman? She asked the Buddha about the origin of birth and death of all dharmas, and upon understanding, immediately attained the true path?'

The Buddha told Ananda: 'Listen to what I say. In the past, there was a Buddha named Kakusandha Buddha (拘樓秦). At that time, this old woman was my relative. When I was practicing the Way, she confined herself out of love for me, and was so worried and missed me that she did not eat or drink for a day. Because of this affection, I was poor for five hundred lifetimes. Now that I have become a Buddha, all blessings are complete, and countless sentient beings gather before the pure Buddha. After sixty billion kalpas, she will become a Buddha, named Sarva (薩婆), and her country will be called Many Flowers (多華).'


,劫名禮禪。時人衣食如忉利天,各壽一劫無有苦勤。」

爾時母人、天、龍、夜叉聞佛說法,皆大歡喜。八萬七千人皆得正真道意,禮佛而去。

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本:劫的名字叫做禮禪(Li Chan)。那時人們的衣食如同忉利天(Trayastrimsa Heaven)一樣豐足,壽命長達一劫,沒有苦惱和辛勤勞作。

當時,老母、天、龍、夜叉聽聞佛陀說法,都非常歡喜。八萬七千人都獲得了真正的道意,向佛陀行禮后離去。

【English Translation】 English version: The kalpa (aeon) is named Li Chan. At that time, people's clothing and food were like those in Trayastrimsa Heaven (Heaven of Thirty-three), each living for a kalpa without suffering or toil.

At that time, the old mother, gods, dragons, and yakshas, hearing the Buddha's teaching, were all greatly delighted. Eighty-seven thousand people all attained the true intention of the Path, paid homage to the Buddha, and departed.
