大唐三藏法師玄奘奉 詔譯
如是我聞：
一時薄伽梵在室羅筏國，住誓多林給孤獨園。時有一天，顏容殊妙，過於夜分，來詣佛所，頂禮佛足，卻住一面。是天威光，甚大赫奕，周遍照曜誓多園林。
爾時彼天以妙伽他而請佛曰：
「云何利刀劍？ 云何磣毒藥？ 云何熾盛火？ 云何極重暗？」
爾時世尊亦以伽他告彼天曰：
「粗言利刀劍， 貪慾磣毒藥， 瞋恚熾盛火， 無明極重暗。」
天覆請曰：
「何人名得利？ 何人名失利？ 何者堅鉀胄？ 何者利刀杖？」
世尊告曰：
「施者名得利， 受者名失利， 忍為堅鉀胄， 慧為利刀杖。」
天覆請曰：
「云何為盜賊？ 云何智者財？ 誰于天世間， 說名能劫盜？」
世尊告曰：
「邪思為盜賊， 尸羅智者財， 于諸天世間， 犯戒能劫盜。」
天覆請曰：
「誰為最安樂？ 誰為大富貴？ 誰為恒端嚴？ 誰為常醜陋？」
世尊告曰：
「少欲最安樂， 知足大富貴， 持戒恒端嚴， 破戒常醜陋

一時，薄伽梵（Bhagavan，世尊）在室羅筏國（Śrāvastī），住在誓多林給孤獨園（Jetavana-anāthapindika-ārāma）。當時有一天人，容貌非常美妙，在深夜時分，來到佛陀所在之處，頂禮佛足，然後站立在一旁。這位天人的威光非常強大和顯赫，周遍照耀著誓多園林。
這時，那位天人以美妙的偈頌向佛陀請問：
『什麼是最鋒利的刀劍？什麼是可怕的毒藥？ 什麼是熾盛的火焰？什麼是極重的黑暗？』
這時，世尊也以偈頌回答那位天人說：
『粗惡的言語是最鋒利的刀劍，貪慾是可怕的毒藥， 瞋恚是熾盛的火焰，無明是極重的黑暗。』
天人再次請問：
『什麼人可以稱作得利？什麼人可以稱作失利？ 什麼是最堅固的鎧甲？什麼是鋒利的刀杖？』
世尊回答說：
『佈施的人可以稱作得利，接受佈施的人可以稱作失利， 忍辱是最堅固的鎧甲，智慧是鋒利的刀杖。』
天人再次請問：
『什麼是盜賊？什麼是智者的財富？ 在天界和人間，誰可以被稱作能夠劫掠盜取？』
世尊回答說：
『邪惡的思想是盜賊，戒律是智者的財富， 在諸天和人間，違犯戒律就能劫掠盜取。』
天人再次請問：
『誰是最安樂的？誰是大富貴的？ 誰是永遠端正莊嚴的？誰是常常醜陋的？』
世尊回答說：
『少欲是最安樂的，知足是大富貴的， 持戒是永遠端正莊嚴的，破戒是常常醜陋的。

The Sutra of the Heavenly Question
Translated under Imperial Order by the Tang Dynasty Tripitaka Master Xuanzang
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Bhagavan (Bhagavan, World-Honored One) was in Śrāvastī (Śrāvastī), residing in the Jetavana-anāthapindika-ārāma (Jetavana-anāthapindika-ārāma). At that time, a deva (deva, heavenly being), with an exceptionally beautiful countenance, came to the Buddha's location late at night, prostrated at the Buddha's feet, and stood to one side. The deva's majestic light was exceedingly brilliant, illuminating the entire Jetavana garden.
Then, that deva asked the Buddha with a wonderful gatha (gatha, verse):
'What is the sharpest sword? What is the most terrible poison? What is the most blazing fire? What is the deepest darkness?'
At that time, the World-Honored One also replied to that deva with a gatha:
'Harsh words are the sharpest sword, greed is the most terrible poison, Anger is the most blazing fire, ignorance is the deepest darkness.'
The deva asked again:
'Who can be called as gaining benefit? Who can be called as losing benefit? What is the most solid armor? What is the sharpest weapon?'
The World-Honored One replied:
'The giver can be called as gaining benefit, the receiver can be called as losing benefit, Patience is the most solid armor, wisdom is the sharpest weapon.'
The deva asked again:
'What are thieves? What is the wealth of the wise? In the heavens and the world, who can be called as capable of robbing and stealing?'
The World-Honored One replied:
'Evil thoughts are thieves, precepts are the wealth of the wise, In the heavens and the world, violating precepts is capable of robbing and stealing.'
The deva asked again:
'Who is the most joyful? Who is the most wealthy and noble? Who is always upright and dignified? Who is always ugly?'
The World-Honored One replied:
'Having few desires is the most joyful, knowing contentment is the most wealthy and noble, Upholding precepts is always upright and dignified, breaking precepts is always ugly.'
。」
天覆請曰：
「誰為善眷屬？ 誰為噁心怨？ 云何極重苦？ 云何第一樂？」
世尊告曰：
「福為善眷屬， 罪為噁心怨， 地獄極重苦， 無生第一樂。」
天覆請曰：
「何者愛非宜？ 何者宜非愛？ 何者極熱病？ 誰是大良醫？」
世尊告曰：
「諸欲愛非宜， 解脫宜非愛， 貪為極熱病， 佛是大良醫。」
天覆請曰：
「誰能覆世間？ 世間誰所魅？ 誰令舍親友？ 誰復障生天？」
世尊告曰：
「無智覆世間， 世間癡所魅， 慳貪舍親友， 染著障生天。」
天覆請曰：
「何物火不燒， 風亦不能碎， 非水所能爛， 能浮持世間？ 誰能與王賊， 勇猛相抗敵， 不為人非人， 之所來侵奪？」
世尊告曰：
「福非火所燒， 風亦不能碎， 福非水所爛， 能浮持世間。 福能與王賊， 勇猛相抗敵， 不為人非人， 之所來侵奪。」
天覆請曰：
「我今猶有疑， 請佛為除斷。 今世往後世， 誰極自欺誑？」
世尊告曰：
「若多有珍財， 而不能修福， 今世往後世， 彼極自欺誑。」

【English Translation】 English version Tianfu asked: 'Who are the good relatives? Who are the enemies with evil intentions? What is the most severe suffering? What is the supreme bliss?' The World-Honored One (世尊) replied: 'Blessings (福) are good relatives, sins (罪) are enemies with evil intentions, hell (地獄) is the most severe suffering, and no rebirth (無生) is the supreme bliss.' Tianfu asked: 'What kind of love is inappropriate? What is appropriate but not loved? What is the extremely hot disease? Who is the great physician?' The World-Honored One (世尊) replied: 'Love for various desires (諸欲) is inappropriate, liberation (解脫) is appropriate but not loved, greed (貪) is the extremely hot disease, and the Buddha (佛) is the great physician.' Tianfu asked: 'Who can cover the world? Who is the world enchanted by? Who causes people to abandon their relatives and friends? Who obstructs beings from being born in the heavens (生天)?' The World-Honored One (世尊) replied: 'Ignorance (無智) can cover the world, the world is enchanted by delusion (癡), stinginess and greed (慳貪) cause people to abandon their relatives and friends, and attachment (染著) obstructs beings from being born in the heavens (生天).' Tianfu asked: 'What is it that fire cannot burn, wind cannot shatter, and water cannot rot, yet it can float and support the world? Who can bravely resist kings and thieves, and not be invaded by humans or non-humans?' The World-Honored One (世尊) replied: 'Blessings (福) cannot be burned by fire, wind cannot shatter them, and water cannot rot them, yet they can float and support the world. Blessings (福) can bravely resist kings and thieves, and not be invaded by humans or non-humans.' Tianfu asked: 'I still have doubts now, please, Buddha (佛), dispel them for me. In this life and the next, who is the most self-deceiving person?' The World-Honored One (世尊) replied: 'If one has a lot of precious wealth but does not use it to cultivate blessings (修福), then in this life and the next, that person is the most self-deceiving person.'
爾時彼天聞佛、世尊說是經已，歡喜踴躍，嘆未曾有，頂禮佛足，即于佛前欻然不現。
