佛說罪業應報教化地獄經
後漢安息三藏安世高譯
如是我聞:
一時佛住王舍城耆阇崛山中,與大菩薩摩訶薩及聲聞眷屬俱,亦與比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷及諸天、龍、鬼神等皆悉集會。爾時信相菩薩白佛言:「世尊!今有地獄、餓鬼、畜生、奴婢、貧富、貴賤種類若干,唯愿世尊具演說法!若有眾生聞佛說法,如孩子得母、如病得醫、如羸得食、如暗得燈,世尊說法利益眾生亦復如是。」
爾時世尊觀時已至,見斯菩薩勸請慇勤,即放眉間白毫相光照於世界——地獄休息,苦痛安寧。爾時一切受罪眾生尋佛光明,來詣佛所;繞佛七匝,為佛作禮;勸請世尊,敷演道化,令此眾生得蒙解脫。
爾時信相菩薩為諸眾生而作發起,前白佛言:「世尊!今有受罪眾生,為諸獄卒剉碓斬身,從頭至足乃至其頂;斬之已訖,巧風吹活,而復斬之。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐不信三尊、不孝父母、屠兒魁膾斬截眾生,故獲斯罪。」
「第二,復有眾生,身體頑痹眉須墮落舉身洪爛,鳥棲鹿宿人跡永絕,玷汙親族人不喜見,名之癩病。何罪所致?」
佛言:

一時,佛陀住在王舍城(Rājagṛha)的耆阇崛山(Gṛdhrakūṭa)中,與大菩薩摩訶薩(Mahāsattva)以及聲聞(Śrāvaka)眷屬在一起,也與比丘(bhikṣu)、比丘尼(bhikṣuṇī)、優婆塞(upāsaka)、優婆夷(upāsikā)以及諸天(deva)、龍(nāga)、鬼神等一起。當時,信相菩薩(Śraddhābhūmi Bodhisattva)對佛說:『世尊!現在有地獄(naraka)、餓鬼(preta)、畜生(tiryagyoni)、奴婢、貧富、貴賤等各種各樣的眾生,希望世尊詳細地演說這些情況!如果眾生聽聞佛陀說法,就像孩子找到了母親、病人找到了醫生、飢餓的人得到了食物、黑暗中得到了光明一樣,世尊說法利益眾生也是如此。』
當時,世尊觀察到時機已到,看到信相菩薩懇切地勸請,就從眉間的白毫相(ūrṇā)中放出光明,照耀整個世界——地獄中的眾生得到休息,痛苦也得以安寧。當時,一切受罪的眾生都追尋著佛陀的光明,來到佛陀所在的地方;圍繞佛陀七圈,向佛陀頂禮;勸請世尊,宣講教化,使這些眾生能夠得到解脫。
當時,信相菩薩爲了這些眾生而發起提問,上前對佛說:『世尊!現在有一些受罪的眾生,被獄卒用剉碓斬斷身體,從頭到腳乃至頭頂;斬斷之後,又被巧風吹活,然後再次被斬斷。這是什麼罪業導致的?』
佛說:『這是因為前世不相信三寶(triratna)、不孝順父母、做屠夫宰殺眾生,所以才獲得這樣的罪報。』
『第二,還有一些眾生,身體麻木,眉毛鬍鬚脫落,全身潰爛,像鳥雀一樣棲息,像鹿一樣住宿,與人世隔絕,玷汙親族,人們都不喜歡見到他們,稱之為癩病。這是什麼罪業導致的?』
佛說:
【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of the Buddha on Retribution of Sins and the Teaching of Hell
Translated by An Shih-kao of Parthia during the Later Han Dynasty
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in Rājagṛha (王舍城) on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa (耆阇崛山), together with a great assembly of Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas (大菩薩摩訶薩) and Śrāvakas (聲聞), as well as bhikṣus (比丘), bhikṣuṇīs (比丘尼), upāsakas (優婆塞), upāsikās (優婆夷), and various devas (諸天), nāgas (龍), and ghosts and spirits. At that time, the Bodhisattva Śraddhābhūmi (信相菩薩) said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One! Now there are various kinds of beings in hell (地獄), as hungry ghosts (餓鬼), as animals (畜生), as slaves, and in conditions of poverty, wealth, nobility, and lowliness. I beseech the World-Honored One to fully expound on these matters! If sentient beings hear the Buddha's teachings, it will be like a child finding its mother, a sick person finding a doctor, a weak person finding food, or darkness finding light. The World-Honored One's teaching benefits sentient beings in the same way.'
At that time, the World-Honored One, seeing that the time was right and observing the Bodhisattva's earnest request, emitted a ray of light from the white hair between his eyebrows (ūrṇā, 白毫相), illuminating the world—the hells were given respite, and suffering was eased. At that time, all the beings undergoing punishment followed the Buddha's light and came to the Buddha's location; they circumambulated the Buddha seven times, prostrated themselves before the Buddha, and requested the World-Honored One to expound the Dharma, so that these beings could be liberated.
At that time, the Bodhisattva Śraddhābhūmi, initiating the inquiry for the sake of all beings, stepped forward and said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One! Now there are sentient beings undergoing punishment, being chopped and pounded by the hell wardens, their bodies cut from head to toe, even to the top of their heads; after being chopped, they are revived by a skillful wind, and then chopped again. What sins have caused this?'
The Buddha said: 'This is because in their past lives they did not believe in the Three Jewels (triratna, 三寶), were not filial to their parents, and were butchers who slaughtered living beings. Therefore, they receive this retribution.'
'Secondly, there are beings whose bodies are numb, whose eyebrows and beards have fallen out, whose entire bodies are festering, who dwell like birds and sleep like deer, forever cut off from human contact, defiling their relatives, and whom people dislike seeing, calling it leprosy. What sins have caused this?'
The Buddha said:
「以前世時坐不信三尊、不孝父母,破壞塔寺、剝脫道人,斬射賢聖、傷害師長,常無返復、背恩忘義,常行茍且、淫匿尊卑無所忌諱,故獲斯罪。」
「第三,復有眾生身體長大,聾騃無足宛轉腹行,唯食泥土以自活命,為諸小蟲之所唼食,常受此苦不可堪處。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐為人自用、不信好言善語,不孝父母、反戾時君;或為帝主大臣四鎮方伯州郡令長吏禁督護,恃其威勢侵奪民物,無有道理使民苦悴吁嗟而行。故獲斯罪。」
「第四,復有眾生,兩目盲瞎都無所見,或抵樹木或墮溝坑,於時死已,更復受身亦復如是。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐不信罪福障佛光明,縫鷹眼合、籠系眾生,皮囊盛頭不得所見。故獲斯罪。」
「第五,復有眾生,謇吃瘖啞口不能言。若有所說,閉目舉手乃不言了。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐誹謗三尊、輕毀聖道,論他好醜、求人長短,強誣良善、憎嫉賢人。故獲斯罪。」
「第六,復有眾生,腹大頸細,不能下食;若有所食,變為膿血。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時偷盜僧食,或為大會福食屏處偷啖;吝惜己物,但貪他財;常行噁心,與人毒藥,氣息不通。故獲斯罪。」

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本: 『前世因為不相信三寶(佛、法、僧),不孝順父母,破壞佛塔寺廟,剝削出家修道之人,殺害射傷賢人聖者,傷害師長,常常不守信用,背棄恩情,忘記道義,經常做茍且之事,在淫亂之事上不分尊卑,毫無顧忌,所以得到這樣的罪報。』 『第三,又有眾生身體長大,又聾又癡,沒有腳,只能在地上翻滾腹部爬行,只能吃泥土來維持生命,還被各種小蟲叮咬吞食,常常遭受這樣的痛苦,難以忍受。這是什麼罪導致的?』 佛說:『前世因為為人固執己見,不相信好的言語和勸告,不孝順父母,違抗君王;或者身為帝王、大臣、四鎮長官、地方長官、州郡長官、縣令、獄吏、督護等,仗著自己的權勢侵佔百姓的財物,不講道理,使百姓困苦不堪,怨聲載道。所以得到這樣的罪報。』 『第四,又有眾生,雙眼瞎盲,什麼都看不見,有時撞到樹木,有時掉進溝里,死後再次投胎,還是這樣。這是什麼罪導致的?』 佛說:『前世因為不相信罪福報應,遮蔽佛的光明,縫合老鷹的眼睛,用籠子囚禁眾生,用皮囊罩住頭,使他們不得看見光明。所以得到這樣的罪報。』 『第五,又有眾生,說話結巴,口齒不清,不能說話。如果想說什麼,就閉上眼睛,舉起手,也說不清楚。這是什麼罪導致的?』 佛說:『前世因為誹謗三寶,輕視詆譭聖道,議論別人的好壞,尋找別人的缺點,誣陷善良的人,憎恨嫉妒賢人。所以得到這樣的罪報。』 『第六,又有眾生,肚子很大,脖子很細,不能下嚥食物;如果吃了東西,就變成膿血。這是什麼罪導致的?』 佛說:『前世因為偷盜僧眾的食物,或者在大型齋會中偷偷吃掉供養的食物;吝嗇自己的財物,只貪圖別人的錢財;常常懷著惡毒的心,給人下毒藥,導致氣息不通暢。所以得到這樣的罪報。』
【English Translation】 English version: 'In past lives, due to not believing in the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), being disrespectful to parents, destroying pagodas and temples, exploiting ascetics, killing or shooting sages, harming teachers, often being untrustworthy, betraying kindness, forgetting righteousness, frequently engaging in opportunistic behavior, and being unrestrained in sexual misconduct regardless of social status, one incurs such retribution.' 'Thirdly, there are beings with large bodies, deaf and foolish, without feet, who can only roll on the ground and crawl on their bellies, surviving only by eating mud, and being devoured by various small insects, constantly suffering such unbearable pain. What sin causes this?' The Buddha said, 'In past lives, due to being self-willed, not believing in good words and advice, being disrespectful to parents, and rebelling against the ruler; or as emperors, ministers, commanders of the four regions, local officials, prefects, magistrates, jailers, or supervisors, relying on their power to seize the property of the people, acting without reason, causing the people to suffer and complain. Therefore, one incurs such retribution.' 'Fourthly, there are beings who are blind in both eyes and cannot see anything, sometimes bumping into trees or falling into ditches, and after death, they are reborn in the same condition. What sin causes this?' The Buddha said, 'In past lives, due to not believing in the karmic consequences of sin and merit, obscuring the light of the Buddha, sewing up the eyes of eagles, caging living beings, and covering their heads with leather bags, preventing them from seeing the light. Therefore, one incurs such retribution.' 'Fifthly, there are beings who stutter, are inarticulate, and cannot speak. If they want to say something, they close their eyes and raise their hands, but still cannot speak clearly. What sin causes this?' The Buddha said, 'In past lives, due to slandering the Three Jewels, belittling and defaming the holy path, discussing the merits and faults of others, seeking out the shortcomings of others, falsely accusing good people, and hating and envying virtuous people. Therefore, one incurs such retribution.' 'Sixthly, there are beings with large bellies and thin necks, unable to swallow food; if they eat something, it turns into pus and blood. What sin causes this?' The Buddha said, 'In past lives, due to stealing food offered to the Sangha, or secretly eating the food offered during large gatherings; being stingy with one's own possessions, only coveting the wealth of others; constantly harboring malicious thoughts, giving poison to others, causing their breath to be obstructed. Therefore, one incurs such retribution.'
七,復有眾生,常為獄卒熱燒鐵釘釘人百節骨頭,釘之已訖自然火生,焚燒身體悉皆焦爛。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐為鍼灸醫師,針人身體不能差病;誑他取財,徒受苦痛,令他苦惱。故獲斯罪。」
「第八,復有眾生常在鑊湯中,為牛頭阿傍以三股鐵叉,叉人內著鑊湯中煮之令爛,還復吹活而復煮之。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時,信邪倒見祠祀鬼神,屠殺眾生,湯灌搣毛、鑊湯煎煮,不可限量。故獲斯罪。」
「第九,復有眾生,常在火城中煻煨齊心,四門俱開;若欲趣向,門即閉之,東西馳走,不能自免,為火燒盡。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐焚燒山澤、火煨雞子、燒他村陌,燒煮眾生身爛皮剝。故獲斯罪。」
「第十,復有眾生常在雪山中,寒風所吹,皮肉剝裂,求死不得。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐橫道作賊,剝脫人衣,使冬月之日令他凍死;生㓟牛羊痛不可堪。故獲斯罪。」
「第十一,復有眾生常在刀山、劍樹上,若有所投,即便割傷,支節斷壞。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐屠殺為業,烹害眾生,屠割剝裂,骨肉分離,頭腳星散,懸于高格,稱量而賣;或復生懸眾生苦痛難處。故獲斯罪。」
【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本 七、又有眾生,經常被獄卒用燒紅的鐵釘釘在全身的骨節上,釘完之後自然生火,焚燒身體,全部焦爛。這是什麼罪導致的呢? 佛說:『這是因為前世做鍼灸醫生時,給人鍼灸身體卻不能治好疾病,欺騙他人錢財,使人白白遭受痛苦,令他們苦惱。所以得到這樣的罪報。』 八、又有眾生經常在沸騰的湯鍋中,被牛頭阿傍(獄卒名)用三股鐵叉叉起來,放入湯鍋中煮爛,然後又吹氣使之復活,再次煮之。這是什麼罪導致的呢? 佛說:『這是因為前世信奉邪惡的錯誤見解,祭祀鬼神,屠殺眾生,用沸水澆灌、拔毛,用湯鍋煎煮,無所不用其極。所以得到這樣的罪報。』 九、又有眾生,經常在火城中,被熾熱的灰燼包圍,四面城門都打開著;如果想要逃向城門,城門就立即關閉,東西奔跑,無法逃脫,被火燒盡。這是什麼罪導致的呢? 佛說:『這是因為前世焚燒山林沼澤,用火煨烤雞蛋,焚燒他人的村莊田地,燒煮眾生,使他們身體焦爛,皮肉剝落。所以得到這樣的罪報。』 十、又有眾生經常在雪山中,被寒風吹襲,皮肉剝裂,求死都不能。這是什麼罪導致的呢? 佛說:『這是因為前世在道路上攔路搶劫,剝奪他人的衣服,使他們在寒冷的冬天被凍死;活剝牛羊,使它們遭受難以忍受的痛苦。所以得到這樣的罪報。』 十一、又有眾生經常在刀山、劍樹上,如果有所行動,就會被割傷,肢體斷裂損壞。這是什麼罪導致的呢? 佛說:『這是因為前世以屠宰為業,烹殺殘害眾生,屠宰分割剝皮,骨肉分離,頭腳四處散落,懸掛在高高的架子上,稱量重量來賣;或者活生生地懸掛眾生,使它們遭受難以忍受的痛苦。所以得到這樣的罪報。』
【English Translation】 English version 7. Furthermore, there are beings who are constantly having their joints nailed with hot, burning iron nails by prison guards. After the nailing is finished, fire naturally arises, burning their bodies until they are completely charred and rotten. What sin causes this? The Buddha said, 'This is because in a past life, they were acupuncture doctors who could not cure illnesses with acupuncture, deceived others to obtain wealth, causing them to suffer in vain, and making them miserable. Therefore, they receive this retribution.' 8. Furthermore, there are beings who are constantly in a cauldron of boiling water, being lifted by ox-headed Apang (獄卒名, name of a prison guard) with a three-pronged iron fork, placed into the cauldron to be boiled until rotten, then revived with breath and boiled again. What sin causes this? The Buddha said, 'This is because in a past life, they believed in evil and perverse views, worshiped ghosts and spirits, slaughtered living beings, poured boiling water on them, plucked their feathers, and boiled them in cauldrons, stopping at nothing. Therefore, they receive this retribution.' 9. Furthermore, there are beings who are constantly in a city of fire, surrounded by hot embers, with all four gates open; if they try to go towards a gate, it immediately closes, and they run east and west, unable to escape, and are burned to ashes. What sin causes this? The Buddha said, 'This is because in a past life, they burned mountains and marshes, roasted chicken eggs in embers, burned other people's villages and fields, and boiled living beings, causing their bodies to be charred and their skin to peel off. Therefore, they receive this retribution.' 10. Furthermore, there are beings who are constantly in snow mountains, being blown by cold winds, their skin and flesh peeling off, unable to die even if they wish to. What sin causes this? The Buddha said, 'This is because in a past life, they robbed people on the road, stripping them of their clothes, causing them to freeze to death in the cold winter; they skinned cattle and sheep alive, causing them unbearable pain. Therefore, they receive this retribution.' 11. Furthermore, there are beings who are constantly on mountains of knives and trees of swords, and if they make any movement, they are cut and wounded, their limbs broken and damaged. What sin causes this? The Buddha said, 'This is because in a past life, they made a living by slaughtering, cooking and harming living beings, butchering, cutting, and skinning them, separating their bones and flesh, scattering their heads and feet, hanging them on high racks, weighing them and selling them; or they hung living beings alive, causing them unbearable suffering. Therefore, they receive this retribution.'
「第十二,復有眾生五根不具。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐飛鷹走狗,彈射禽獸,或斷其頭,或斷其足,生搣鳥翼。故獲斯罪。」
「第十三,復有眾生,攣躄背僂腰髖不遂,腳跛手拘,不能操涉。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐為人憯克,行道安槍;或安射窠,施張弶阱陷墜眾生,頭破腳折,傷損非一。故獲斯罪。」
「第十四,復有眾生,常為獄卒桎梏其身,不得免脫。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐網捕眾生,籠系而畜,饑窮困苦;或為宰主、令長貪取財錢,枉系良善,怨苦號天,不得縱意。故獲斯罪。」
「第十五,復有眾生,或癲、或狂、或癡、或騃,不別好醜。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐飲酒醉亂,犯三十六失,后得癡身,如似醉人,不識尊卑,不別好醜。八萬劫墮沸屎地獄,獄卒斬剉,求死不得,求生不得,五窮六極,長夜受苦,以坐貪酒過。受罪已,始得為人,癃殘跛蹇,為人之所憎嫉;行逢接他橫事,常無樂時。以酒過犯,故獲斯罪。」
「第十六,復有眾生其形甚小,陰藏甚大;挽之身疲,皆復進引;行立坐臥,以之為妨。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐治生販賣,自譽己物,毀呰他財;囂升弄㪷,躡秤
【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本 『第十二,又有眾生五根不全(眼、耳、鼻、舌、身等感覺器官有殘缺)。這是什麼罪過導致的?』 佛說:『這是因為前世喜歡乘坐飛鷹走狗去追逐禽獸,用彈弓射殺它們,或者砍斷它們的頭,或者砍斷它們的腳,活生生地拔掉鳥的翅膀。所以得到這樣的罪報。』 『第十三,又有眾生,手腳彎曲不能伸直,駝背彎腰,腰和胯不能正常活動,腳跛手拘攣,不能行走。這是什麼罪過導致的?』 佛說:『這是因為前世為人殘暴刻薄,在道路上安置槍箭;或者設定射擊的場所,設定張開的捕鳥器和陷阱,使眾生掉入其中,頭破腳折,受傷的很多。所以得到這樣的罪報。』 『第十四,又有眾生,經常被獄卒用刑具束縛身體,不能夠逃脫。這是什麼罪過導致的?』 佛說:『這是因為前世喜歡用網捕捉眾生,用籠子囚禁它們,使它們飢餓困苦;或者作為地方長官,貪圖錢財,冤枉囚禁善良的人,使他們怨恨痛苦地呼天喊地,不能夠自由自在。所以得到這樣的罪報。』 『第十五,又有眾生,或者癲狂,或者癡呆,或者愚笨,不能分辨好壞。這是什麼罪過導致的?』 佛說:『這是因為前世喜歡飲酒,醉后胡作非爲,犯下三十六種過失,後來得到癡呆的身體,就像醉酒的人一樣,不認識尊卑,不能分辨好壞。要經歷八萬劫墮入沸屎地獄,被獄卒斬殺剁碎,求死不得,求生不得,五種窮困和六種極端痛苦,長夜受苦,這是因為貪酒的過錯。受罪完畢后,才能夠轉世為人,但仍然是殘疾跛腳,被人憎恨厭惡;行走時經常遇到飛來橫禍,常常沒有快樂的時候。因為飲酒的過錯,所以得到這樣的罪報。』 『第十六,又有眾生,身體非常矮小,但陰莖卻非常大;拉它的時候身體疲憊,但仍然要勉強拉動;行走站立坐臥,都因為它而感到妨礙。這是什麼罪過導致的?』 佛說:『這是因為前世喜歡做生意買賣,自我誇耀自己的貨物,詆譭別人的財物;在量具上作弊,用腳踩秤』
【English Translation】 English version 『Twelfth, again, there are sentient beings whose five faculties are incomplete (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body are defective). What sin causes this?』 The Buddha said: 『This is because in past lives they enjoyed riding falcons and hunting dogs to chase after birds and beasts, shooting them with slingshots, or cutting off their heads, or cutting off their feet, and plucking birds' wings while they were still alive. Therefore, they receive this sinful retribution.』 『Thirteenth, again, there are sentient beings who are crippled, hunchbacked, whose waists and hips do not function properly, whose feet are lame and hands are cramped, unable to walk. What sin causes this?』 The Buddha said: 『This is because in past lives they were cruel and harsh to others, placing spears on the roads; or setting up shooting ranges, setting up snares and traps, causing sentient beings to fall into them, breaking their heads and feet, causing countless injuries. Therefore, they receive this sinful retribution.』 『Fourteenth, again, there are sentient beings who are constantly bound by prison guards with shackles, unable to escape. What sin causes this?』 The Buddha said: 『This is because in past lives they enjoyed catching sentient beings with nets, confining them in cages, causing them to suffer from hunger and hardship; or as local officials, they were greedy for money, unjustly imprisoning good people, causing them to resentfully cry out to the heavens, unable to be free. Therefore, they receive this sinful retribution.』 『Fifteenth, again, there are sentient beings who are either insane, or foolish, or idiotic, unable to distinguish between good and bad. What sin causes this?』 The Buddha said: 『This is because in past lives they enjoyed drinking alcohol, becoming reckless after being drunk, committing thirty-six kinds of faults, and later receiving an idiotic body, like a drunken person, not recognizing superiors and inferiors, unable to distinguish between good and bad. They must endure eighty thousand kalpas in the boiling excrement hell, being chopped and minced by the prison guards, unable to seek death, unable to seek life, experiencing five kinds of poverty and six kinds of extreme suffering, suffering through the long night, because of the fault of greed for alcohol. After finishing their punishment, they are able to be reborn as humans, but they are still disabled and lame, hated and despised by others; they often encounter unexpected misfortunes, and rarely have times of joy. Because of the fault of drinking alcohol, they receive this sinful retribution.』 『Sixteenth, again, there are sentient beings whose bodies are very small, but whose penises are very large; when they pull it, their bodies are exhausted, but they still have to force themselves to pull it; whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, they feel hindered by it. What sin causes this?』 The Buddha said: 『This is because in past lives they enjoyed doing business and trading, boasting about their own goods, disparaging others' property; cheating with measuring tools, stepping on the scales』
前後,欺誑於人。故獲斯罪。」
「第十七,復有眾生男根不具,為黃門身,不得妻娶。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐喜犍象、馬、牛、羊、豬、狗不可稱數,令此眾生苦痛難忍,死而復穌。故獲斯罪。」
「第十八,復有眾生,從生至老無有兒子,孤立獨存。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐為人暴惡,不信罪福;百鳥產乳之時,赍持瓶器,循大水渚,求拾鴻、鵠、鸚、鵡、鵝、雁諸鳥子卵,擔歸煮啖;諸鳥失子,悲鳴叫裂,眼中血出。故獲斯罪。」

The Buddha said, 'Because in past lives they delighted in tormenting countless elephants, horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, and dogs, causing these beings unbearable pain, dying and then reviving. Therefore, they received this retribution.' 'Eighteenth, some sentient beings have no children from birth to old age, living in solitude. What sin caused this?' The Buddha said, 'Because in past lives they were cruel and violent, disbelieving in sin and merit; when birds were laying eggs and nursing their young, they carried bottles and other containers along the great rivers, seeking and collecting the eggs of swans (hóng), wild swans (hú), parrots (yīng wǔ), geese (é), wild geese (yàn), and other birds, carrying them home to cook and eat; causing the birds to lose their young, crying out in sorrow, with blood flowing from their eyes. Therefore, they received this retribution.' 'Nineteenth, some sentient beings are orphaned and poor from a young age, without parents or siblings; working for others, struggling to make a living; after growing up, they unexpectedly encounter disasters; arrested by the government, imprisoned in jail; no one sends them food, suffering from hunger and poverty, with no one to turn to. The Buddha said, 'Because in past lives they delighted in capturing eagles (diāo), vultures (jiù), hawks (yīng), harriers (yào), bears (xióng), brown bears (pí), tigers (hǔ), leopards (bào), and other animals, confining them with shackles, making these beings lonely and miserable; their parents and siblings were constantly worried and concerned, crying out in sorrow, their grief touching people's hearts; unable to receive sustenance, they constantly suffered from hunger, becoming emaciated, wishing for death but unable to die. Therefore, they received this retribution.' 'Twentieth, some sentient beings are extremely ugly in appearance, their bodies as black as lacquer, their eyes blue, their heads and cheeks covered in flesh, their faces covered in sores, their noses flat, their eyes yellow and red, their teeth sparse and missing, their breath foul-smelling, their bodies short and covered in boils, with large bellies, wide waists and hips, crooked feet, hunched backs, protruding ribs, consuming much food and clothing, covered in festering sores, suffering from edema, emaciation, scabies, leprosy, carbuncles, and various other ailments all concentrated on their bodies; even if they are close to others, people do not care about them; if they work for others'
罪,橫羅其殃;永不見佛、永不聞法、永不識僧。何罪所致?」
佛言:「以前世時坐為子不孝父母,為臣不忠其君,為君不敬其下,朋友不以其信,鄉黨不以其齒,朝廷不以其爵;趣為趣作,心意顛倒,無有其度;不信三尊,殺君害師;伐國掠民,攻城破塢,偷寨過盜,惡業非一;美己惡人,侵陵孤老,誣謗賢聖,輕慢尊長,欺誑下賤。一切罪業悉具犯之。眾惡集報,故獲斯罪。」
爾時一切諸受罪眾生聞佛作如是說,悲㘁動地,淚下如雨,而白佛言:「唯愿世尊久住說法,令我等輩而得解脫!」
佛言:「若我久住,薄德之人不種善根,謂我常在,不念無常。善男子!譬如孩兒母常在側,不生難遭之想;若母去者,便生渴仰思戀之心;母方還來,乃生歡喜。善男子!我今亦復如是。知諸眾生善惡業緣、受報好醜,故般涅槃。」
爾時世尊即為此諸受罪眾生而說偈言:
「水流不常滿, 火盛不久然, 日出須臾沒, 月滿已復缺。 尊榮豪貴者, 無常復過是, 念當勤精進, 頂禮無上尊。」
爾時世尊說斯偈已,諸受罪眾生白佛言:「世尊!修何善行得離斯苦?」

The Buddha said, 'It is because in past lives, as a son, one was not filial to parents; as a minister, one was not loyal to the ruler; as a ruler, one did not respect subordinates; among friends, one did not keep faith; in the village, one did not respect seniority; in the court, one did not respect rank; one only pursued pleasure, with a mind that was inverted and without measure; one did not believe in the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), killed rulers and harmed teachers; invaded countries, plundered the people, attacked cities, destroyed fortresses, committed theft and robbery, and committed countless evil deeds; one praised oneself and denigrated others, bullied the orphaned and elderly, falsely accused and slandered the virtuous and holy, disrespected elders, and deceived the common people. All kinds of sins were committed. All evil deeds accumulated, therefore, one receives such retribution.' At that time, all the beings suffering from retribution, upon hearing the Buddha's words, wept with sorrow, shaking the earth, with tears falling like rain, and said to the Buddha, 'We only wish that the World-Honored One would dwell long in the world and teach the Dharma, so that we, who are suffering, may be liberated!' The Buddha said, 'If I were to dwell long in the world, those with little merit would not plant good roots, thinking that I am always here, and not mindful of impermanence. Good man! It is like a child who, when the mother is always by their side, does not cherish the thought of encountering her; but if the mother leaves, they will feel longing and yearning; and when the mother returns, they will rejoice. Good man! I am also like this. Knowing the good and evil karmic conditions of all beings, and the good and bad retributions they receive, therefore, I choose to enter Parinirvana (complete Nirvana).' At that time, the World-Honored One spoke the following verse for these beings suffering from retribution: 'The flow of water is not always full, the burning fire does not last long, the sun rises and quickly sets, the moon is full and then wanes. Those who are honored and noble, impermanence is even faster than these changes, one should diligently strive forward, and prostrate to the supreme and unsurpassed one.' At that time, after the World-Honored One spoke this verse, the beings suffering from retribution asked the Buddha, 'World-Honored One! What good deeds should we cultivate to escape this suffering?' The Buddha said, 'You should diligently be filial to your parents, respect and serve your teachers, take refuge in and offer to the Three Jewels; diligently practice giving (Dāna), upholding precepts (Śīla), patience (Kṣānti), diligence (Vīrya), meditation (Dhyāna)...'

說是經已,菩薩摩訶薩即得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,聲聞、緣覺即得六通、三明、具八解脫,有得法眼凈。若有眾生得聞是經不墮三塗、八難之處。地獄休息,苦痛安寧。
爾時信相菩薩白佛言:「當何名此經?云何奉持?」
佛告信相菩薩善男子:「此經名為『罪業報應教化地獄經』,當奉持之,廣令流佈,功德無量!」
諸天大眾聞經歡喜,五體投地,作禮奉行。

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本 智慧,慈悲喜捨(四種無量心),怨親平等,視他人與自己沒有差別;不欺負孤寡老人,不輕視弱小,保護他們如同保護自己。你們如果能夠這樣修行,就是已經報答了佛的恩德,永遠脫離各種痛苦。
說完這部經后,菩薩摩訶薩(偉大的菩薩)立即證得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提(無上正等正覺),聲聞(聽聞佛法而悟道者)、緣覺(通過觀察因緣而覺悟者)立即獲得六通(六種神通)、三明(三種智慧光明)、具足八解脫(八種從束縛中解脫的方法),有人獲得法眼凈(清凈的佛法眼)。如果有眾生聽聞這部經,就不會墮入三塗(地獄、餓鬼、畜生三惡道)、八難(八種難以修行佛法的處境)之處。地獄中的眾生可以得到休息,痛苦得以平息安寧。
這時,信相菩薩(具有堅定信仰的菩薩)問佛說:『這部經應當叫什麼名字?我們應該如何奉行?』
佛告訴信相菩薩善男子:『這部經名為《罪業報應教化地獄經》,應當奉行它,廣泛地傳播流通,功德無量!』
諸天大眾聽聞此經,歡喜踴躍,五體投地,行禮並遵照奉行。

【English Translation】 English version Wisdom, compassion, joy, and equanimity (the four immeasurable minds), treating enemies and loved ones equally, seeing others as no different from oneself; not欺負 the孤寡老人 (vulnerable elders), not looking down on the weak, protecting them as oneself. If you can cultivate in this way, you will have repaid the Buddha's kindness and will be forever free from all suffering.
After this sutra was spoken, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva (great Bodhisattva) immediately attained Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (unsurpassed perfect enlightenment), the Shravakas (those who attain enlightenment by hearing the Buddha's teachings) and Pratyekabuddhas (those who attain enlightenment through observing dependent origination) immediately attained the six supernormal powers, the three kinds of knowledge, and possessed the eight liberations, and some attained the pure Dharma eye. If any sentient beings hear this sutra, they will not fall into the three evil realms (hell, hungry ghosts, and animals) or the eight difficulties (eight conditions that make it difficult to practice the Dharma). Beings in hell can rest, and their suffering can be calmed and pacified.
At that time, the Bodhisattva Sìnxiàng (Bodhisattva of Faith and Appearance) asked the Buddha, 'What should this sutra be called? How should we uphold it?'
The Buddha told the virtuous man, Bodhisattva Sìnxiàng, 'This sutra is called the 'Sutra on the Retribution of Sins and the Teaching and Transformation of Hell.' You should uphold it and widely propagate it, for its merits are immeasurable!'
The assembly of gods and humans, hearing this sutra, rejoiced, prostrated themselves with their five limbs on the ground, paid homage, and vowed to practice accordingly.
