西天中印度摩伽陀國那爛陀寺三藏傳教大師賜紫沙門臣法天奉 詔譯

歸命一切佛,  及諸菩薩眾,  愿開正智慧,  憶念佛功德。  歸依三界尊,  身口意三業,  所作善不善,  為彼作分別。  彼人受果報,  無有主宰者,  三界天中尊,  愿起于悲智,  廣為世間說,  我今聞彼說。  如依于輪迴,  觀察業果報,  佛說惡道因,  貪瞋癡為本。  若人行殺害,  彼業隨纏縛,  決定墮等活,  五百歲方出。  彼彼等活者,  重重受生死,  是故說等活。  父母及親姻,  眷屬善知識,  欺慢若憎嫌,  墮落於黑繩。  熾焰粗澀繩,  纏縛有情體,  如鋸解樹木,  是故名黑繩。  若墮于炎熱,  猛火競來燒,  焰焰相接續,  令彼罪業人,  奔聚都一處,  燒燃苦惱深,  是故說炎熱。  修習非法行,  惱亂于大眾,  說彼無有盡,  墮彼極炎熱。  入此惡道已,  熾極火燒煮,  熱苦受長時,  是名極炎熱。  豬羊狼兔等,  及余諸物命,  如是行殺害,  而墮于眾合

【English Translation】 English version I take refuge in all Buddhas, and all Bodhisattvas, May I open true wisdom, and remember the merits of the Buddha. I take refuge in the尊(Zun, the Honored One) of the three realms, with body, speech, and mind, Making distinctions between the good and bad deeds I have done. Those people receive karmic retribution, without a ruler, The Honored One in the heavens of the three realms, may you arise with compassion and wisdom, Widely proclaiming to the world, I now hear these teachings. As one relies on輪迴(Lunhui, Samsara), observing the karmic retribution, The Buddha said the cause of evil paths is rooted in greed, hatred, and delusion. If someone commits killing, that karma will bind them, They will surely fall into the 等活(Deng Huo, Sañjīva) hell, and only escape after five hundred years. Those beings in the 等活(Deng Huo, Sañjīva) hell, repeatedly experience birth and death, Therefore it is called 等活(Deng Huo, Sañjīva) hell. Towards parents and relatives, Family members and good teachers, if one deceives, belittles, or hates, They will fall into the 黑繩(Hei Sheng, Kālasūtra) hell. Fierce and rough ropes, Bind the bodies of sentient beings, like sawing wood, Therefore it is called 黑繩(Hei Sheng, Kālasūtra) hell. If one falls into the 炎熱(Yan Re, Tapana) hell, Fierce flames compete to burn, flames connecting to flames, Causing those with heavy sins to run and gather in one place, The burning suffering is extremely deep, therefore it is called 炎熱(Yan Re, Tapana) hell. Practicing unlawful conduct, disturbing the masses, The Buddha said there is no end to such behavior, one will fall into the 極炎熱(Ji Yan Re, Pratāpana) hell. After entering this evil path, being boiled by fierce flames, Enduring prolonged suffering, this is called 極炎熱(Ji Yan Re, Pratāpana) hell. Like pigs, sheep, wolves, rabbits, etc., and other living beings, If one commits killing in this way, they will fall into the 眾合(Zhong He, Samghāta) hell.


。  墮彼惡趣已,  眾山合身碎,  痛苦不可當,  故得名眾合。  若起身口意,  而發諸煩惱,  欺誑于有情,  墮落於號叫。  入彼惡道已,  暴惡火燒身,  叫苦聲不絕,  是故名號叫。  聖賢凈行師,  所有財寶等,  若貪若偷盜,  而墮大號叫。  若諸偷盜業,  感大火燒身,  叫喚出大聲,  是名大號叫。  作大功德人,  及與父母等,  譭謗而返恩,  決定墮無間。  持罰骨髓碎,  受苦純無間,  身命報等爾,  是故名無間。  互相愛憎嫉,  並及相殺害,  感彼惡趣身,  手生鋒刃甲,  如是鐵爪甲,  甲長十六指,  暴惡熾焱身,  抓護相損害,  故名鋒刃甲。  愚癡邪淫者,  登彼鐵叉樹,  大身鐵牙鬼,  醜惡身炎熾,  逼惱恒無盡。  復有鐵烏鳥,  獯狐諸惡獸,  食啖彼有情。  復生劍葉林,  割截于罪人,  叫喚出惡聲,  痛苦不可忍。  諂誑妄言者,  吞食熱鐵丸,  而復飲洋銅,  重重無暫住。  輕慢若欺他,  鐵牙惡獸等,  來食身上肉,  受苦俱胝歲。  愛行非法行,  墮入洋銅河,  大熾洋銅汁,  燒煮或浮沉。  又復自愚迷,  勸

【English Translation】 English version Having fallen into that evil realm, their bodies are crushed by mountains, the suffering is unbearable, hence it is called Samghata (Crushing). If, through body, speech, and mind, various afflictions arise, deceiving and misleading sentient beings, one will fall into Raurava (Howling Hell). Having entered that evil path, the body is burned by fierce flames, the cries of suffering are incessant, hence it is called Howling Hell. Regarding the possessions of saints and pure practitioners, if one is greedy or steals them, one will fall into Maharaurava (Great Howling Hell). If, due to the act of stealing, one experiences the retribution of being burned by great fire, crying out loudly in pain, this is called Great Howling Hell. Those who have performed great meritorious deeds, as well as parents and others, if they slander them and repay kindness with malice, they will certainly fall into Avici (Uninterrupted Hell). There, the marrow of the bones is crushed by punishment, the suffering is purely uninterrupted, life and retribution are equal, hence it is called Uninterrupted Hell. If there is mutual love, hatred, jealousy, and even killing, one will be reborn in an evil realm, with sharp claws growing on their hands. Such iron claws, each finger sixteen digits long, with fierce flames surrounding the body, scratching and harming each other, hence it is called Khura-dhara (Razor-edged Hell). Those who are foolish and engage in perverse sexual conduct will climb the iron stake tree, with huge iron-toothed demons, their ugly bodies burning with flames, constantly tormenting them without end. There are also iron crows, jackals, and various evil beasts, devouring these suffering sentient beings. There also arises a forest of sword leaves, cutting the bodies of sinners, causing them to cry out in agony, the suffering unbearable. Those who are flattering and deceitful liars, are forced to swallow red-hot iron balls, and then drink molten copper, suffering repeatedly without a moment's rest. If one is disrespectful or deceives others, iron-toothed demons and beasts come to devour the flesh of their bodies, enduring countless years of suffering. If one is attached to and engages in unlawful conduct, they will fall into the river of molten copper, boiled by the blazing copper liquid, either being cooked or floating in it. 作非法行,  往彼鐵輪獄,  而被鐵火輪,  碾拶身無數,  或以鐵磨磨,  或上刀山等。  若人說邪道,  破正法為非,  滿道排鋒刃,  令彼往來行,  業力令身大,  驅逐聚一處,  四面山石合,  如指甲拶虱。  若壞修習行,  遠離正等因,  僻執心意邪,  定入由增獄。  暴惡蛆蟲類,  恒居糞穢中,  罪者游履時,  食啖于雙足。  種植壓油等,  蠕動多傷殺,  重重臥鐵槽,  熱鐵棒捶打。  若起極瞋怒,  造彼諸惡罪,  死墮焰魔剎,  具受一切苦。  破結善種子,  身口意俱罪,  智者勿作罪,  地獄相如是。

地獄品頌竟。

牛驢猿猴等,  鳩鴿鵝鴨身,  行恚與貪淫,  獲報斯如是。  豺狼猛虎犳,  蝮蝎及毒蛇,  瞋忿我慢深,  獲報斯如是。  烏鵲雕鷲等,  蜈蚣路多蟲,  羆熊貓牛馬,  龍魚㜸路荼,  如是傍生等,  增益惡三業,  墜墮焰魔界,  獲報斯如是。

傍生品頌竟。

障他佈施福,  偷盜于飲食,  墮在布怛那,  饑虛為餓鬼。  愚癡慳鄙人,  我慢乏禮樂,  求食又無慚,  死為大癭鬼。  自不行檀度,  勸他作慳貪,

【English Translation】 English version Those who commit unlawful deeds will fall into Tie Lun Yu (鐵輪獄, Iron Wheel Hell), Where their bodies are crushed countless times by iron fire wheels, Or ground by iron mills, or made to climb knife mountains, and so on. If someone promotes heretical paths, denouncing the true Dharma as false, Spreading sharp blades along the roads, forcing people to walk back and forth, The power of karma will enlarge their bodies, driving them to gather in one place, The surrounding mountains and rocks will close in, squeezing them like lice between fingernails. If they destroy the practice of cultivation, turning away from the causes of enlightenment, Clinging stubbornly to evil intentions, they will surely fall into You Zeng Yu (由增獄). Vile and wicked maggots and worms always dwell in filth, When sinners walk there, they devour their feet. Those who engage in planting, oil pressing, and other industries, causing much harm and killing due to wriggling creatures, Will lie heavily in iron troughs, beaten by hot iron rods. If they arise with extreme anger, creating all kinds of evil deeds, After death, they will fall into Yan Mo Cha (焰魔剎), enduring all suffering. Destroying the seeds of good karma, committing sins with body, speech, and mind, The wise should not commit evil; such is the appearance of hell.

The chapter on Hell is complete.

Cows, donkeys, monkeys, and so on, as well as doves, pigeons, geese, ducks, and so on, Due to past anger and lust, they receive such retribution. Jackals, wolves, fierce tigers, leopards, vipers, scorpions, and poisonous snakes, Due to past deep anger, resentment, and arrogance, they receive such retribution. Crows, magpies, eagles, vultures, and so on, as well as centipedes, Lu Duo Chong (路多蟲, a type of insect), Bears, pandas, cows, horses, dragons, fish, and Jialu Tu (㜸路荼, Garuda), These animals and other beings, due to increasing evil deeds of body, speech, and mind, Falling into Yan Mo Jie (焰魔界), they receive such retribution.

The chapter on Animals is complete.

Obstructing others' blessings of generosity, stealing food and drink, They will fall into Bu Da Na (布怛那), suffering hunger as hungry ghosts. Foolish, stingy, and mean people, arrogant and lacking in etiquette, Begging for food without shame, after death, they will become Da Ying Gui (大癭鬼, Big Goiter Ghosts). Not practicing generosity themselves, but instead encouraging others to be stingy,


而墮餓鬼中,  腹大咽如針。  慳貪深厚者,  護財如眼睛,  貧病與佛僧,  不能施少分,  亦復不自用,  父母莫能得,  死墮餓鬼身,  漿飲永不遇。  若盜他財物,  施已心生悔,  亦墮餓鬼身,  常食于膿唾。  口出惡言語,  謗毀於賢善,  墮彼餓鬼中,  口生於火炬。  慳貪與諍訟,  惡意窺他財,  墮彼餓鬼中,  微獲祭祀食,  或入聚落處,  見彼遺棄食,  嘔吐涎唾等,  而恒為美饌。  自行慳障礙,  離間他行施,  為鬼恭槃荼,  惡形生膿血。  傷殺群生類,  自食與他食,  墮鬼羅剎娑,  愛食鬘香粖。  雖然施飲食,  少分懷瞋恚,  墮鬼健闥婆,  作樂諸天愛。  若愛于兩舌,  斗亂行瞋恚,  墮鬼畢舍佐,  頭面而醜惡。  雖愛行檀施,  而恒苦惱人,  墮彼惡趣中,  為彼母馱鬼。  自行猛利殺,  教他猛利殺,  墮彼藥叉身,  亦復惡猛利。  父母師長等,  所欲多違背,  墮彼藥叉宮,  勇健行暴惡。  慳貪瞋果報,  餓鬼藥叉等,  苦樂隨自因,  諸惡不須作。

Those who are deeply stingy and greedy, guarding their wealth as if it were their own eyes, Are unable to give even a small portion to the poor, the sick, or the Buddhas and Sangha, Nor do they use it for themselves; even their parents cannot obtain anything from them. After death, they fall into the body of a hungry ghost, never encountering even a drop of liquid. If they steal the property of others, and then feel regret after giving it away, They will also fall into the body of a hungry ghost, constantly feeding on pus and saliva. If they utter evil words, slandering and defaming the virtuous and good, They will fall into the realm of hungry ghosts, with torches of fire emerging from their mouths. Due to stinginess, greed, and contention, maliciously spying on the wealth of others, They fall into the realm of hungry ghosts, barely obtaining food from sacrifices, Or entering villages and seeing abandoned food, Such as vomit, phlegm, and saliva, which they constantly regard as delicious meals. They themselves are stingy, obstructing generosity, and alienating others from practicing charity, They become Kumbhandas (a type of demon), with ugly forms covered in pus and blood. If they harm and kill living beings, whether for their own consumption or for others, They fall into the realm of Rakshasas (a type of demon), who love to eat garlands, incense, and powders. Even if they give food and drink, but harbor a small amount of anger, They fall into the realm of Gandharvas (a type of celestial being), becoming musicians loved by the gods. If they love to engage in divisive speech, causing strife and harboring anger, They fall into the realm of Pisachas (a type of demon), with ugly heads and faces. Although they love to practice generosity, they constantly cause suffering and distress to others, They fall into the evil realms, becoming Mutada ghosts (a type of demon). They themselves engage in fierce killing, or incite others to engage in fierce killing, They fall into the body of Yakshas (a type of guardian spirit), who are also fierce and violent. They often disobey the wishes of their parents, teachers, and elders, They fall into the Yaksha palaces, brave and strong, acting violently and wickedly. The karmic consequences of stinginess and anger are falling into the realms of hungry ghosts and Yakshas, etc. Suffering and happiness are determined by one's own actions, so all kinds of evil deeds should not be done. The verses of the 'Hungry Ghost' chapter are completed. Gods, Asuras (a type of deity), and humans have different levels of blessings and lifespans, Those who desire to be reborn in the heavens,


堅持八齋戒,  快樂壽命長,  遠離疾病苦。  于禁若破犯,  少分樂生天,  而墮于修羅,  部多為眷屬。  雖不盜他財,  纖毫不行施,  吝惜廣慳貪,  而為守財鬼。  不盜亦不施,  不慳亦不貪,  決定得人身,  衣食多辛苦。  不盜不貪瞋,  守分而安住,  美味施聖賢,  彼得生人世,  壽命具色力,  吉祥而無病。  恒時行施食,  凈信具慚愧,  得富貴端嚴,  廣饒資畜等。  若施田宅等,  及造僧伽藍,  令彼心歡喜,  于自彼身中,  一切隨所欲,  若施於鞋履,  供養佛僧等,  遊行得安樂,  常獲車騎乘。  若於曠野中,  施水作泉井,  而復作陰涼,  令彼無疲渴,  當獲于妙花,  吉祥廣嚴飾,  柔軟身圓滿。  若於傳法人,  舍施童子等,  后復得為人,  聰明多智慧。  若施於藥餌,  當離一切病,  若施於燈明,  眼目長清凈,  若施於音樂,  口生美妙音,  若施臥具等,  當感身安樂,  若施傍類食,  長壽多色力,  若放女出家,  眷屬獲增長,  若以田地施,  得花果流泉。  若怖于輪迴,  親覲于賢聖,  所須隨供養,  精進常恭

Though one does not steal the wealth of others,  Not even a hair's breadth of generosity is practiced,  Miserliness and greed abound,  And one becomes a guarding ghost of wealth.  Neither stealing nor giving,  Neither miserly nor greedy,  One is destined to be born as a human,  With much hardship in clothing and food.  Neither stealing, greed, nor anger,  Abiding in contentment,  Offering delicious food to the virtuous and wise,  They will be reborn in the human world,  With longevity, beauty, and strength,  Auspicious and without illness.  Constantly practicing giving and offering food,  With pure faith and a sense of shame,  One obtains wealth, nobility, and dignified appearance,  Abundant resources, livestock, and more. If one gives medicine,  One will be free from all illnesses,  If one gives light,  The eyes will be clear and pure for a long time,  If one gives music,  A beautiful and wonderful voice will be born,  If one gives bedding, etc.,  One will feel physical comfort,  If one gives food to animals,  One will have longevity, beauty, and strength,  If one allows a woman to leave home (become a nun),  The family will grow,  If one gives fields and land,  One will obtain flowers, fruits, and flowing springs. With a compassionate heart, pitying others, not being stingy, giving up one's own needs to give to others, One will surely reap the fruit of wealth and abundance, with clothing and food naturally plentiful. Just like in the four seasons, practicing giving at any time, Respectfully valuing and possessing the proper rituals, one will obtain all blessings. Stealing the property of others to satisfy one's own needs, This is contrary to the principle of emptiness, and afflictions will not depart. Not with a mind attached to appearances, but following the principle of suchness to practice giving, The fruit of such giving is the great peace and happiness obtained through non-action. Just as a person who is detached from lust will not have boys born again, Leaving home to other places, the mind has no thoughts or attachments. If a person is attached to lust, the mind has no return or cessation, Being frantic and indulging in it, one will forever fall into the three evil realms (three paths). Disliking women, cultivating precepts, reducing infatuation and love, Until the end of life, it is like breaking poisonous gas. If practicing the cause of right equality, not abandoning pure conduct (Brahma-conduct), Diligent practice will obtain auspiciousness, and gods and humans will constantly make offerings. Being firm and not confused, not drinking alcohol, not speaking false words, Speaking words that are always true, one will obtain fame, peace, and happiness. Using all kinds of fine food and drink to make offerings to the harmonious Sangha, One will be rewarded with kind family members, and together be reborn in the Buddha-land of Akshobhya (Immovable). Serving each other, with joyful hearts and no opposition, Observing the true meaning, knowing the emptiness of all dharmas, not deceiving, not being inverted, Suffering will be forever extinguished, and one will attain peace and liberation. If one likes frivolous talk, indulging in singing and dancing, clinging to ignorance, Being arrogant and relying on one's beautiful appearance, deceiving the poor and lowly, One will receive the retribution of a hunched back, becoming mute and ugly, Afflicted by diseases, speaking vulgar and disrespectful words, The suffering of sins will become deeper and deeper, with no cause to obtain peace and happiness. With a quiet and peaceful mind, all good things arise, The retribution of cause and effect is true and not false, quickly accomplishing the path of liberation from suffering.


人趣品頌竟。

諂誑行毀禁,  毒害斗諍深,  廣縱于無明,  必墮修羅趣。

修羅品頌竟。

棄名利歡樂,  遠離於親眷,  持禁中下品,  生彼四王天。  父母親族等,  種種作供養,  遠諍奉律儀,  獲生忉利天。  慈喜無傷殺,  和顏離愛憎,  純善守尸羅,  得生夜摩界。  多聞持法教,  修慧求解脫,  積德具威儀,  獲生於睹史。  若人自出家,  佈施堅持戒,  令彼大安樂,  得生變化天。  上根有情類,  持戒亦最上,  功德超越前,  生他化自在。  持戒生天上,  禪定亦如是,  智慧若薰脩,  牽引復生慧,  善惡業果報,  我說無虛謬。  由善得安樂,  作惡獲苦惱,  老病死輪轉,  果報自如是。  審觀此三種,  勿愛須棄捨,  求福遠離罪,  了絕於色聲,  通達真實義,  必至大解脫。

If one offers various kinds of offerings To parents, relatives, and so on, Keeps away from strife and upholds the Vinaya (rules of discipline), One will obtain birth in the Trāyastriṃśa (Heaven of Thirty-three). If one has compassion and joy, does not harm or kill, Has a kind face, is free from love and hatred, Is purely virtuous, and guards Śīla (precepts), One will be born in the Yāmadevaloka (Heaven of Yama). If one is learned, upholds the Dharma teachings, Cultivates wisdom, and seeks liberation, Accumulates merit, and possesses dignity, One will obtain birth in the Tuṣita (Heaven). If one renounces the household life oneself, Practices generosity, and firmly upholds the precepts, Brings great joy to others, One will be born in the Nirmāṇarati (Heaven of Enjoying Transformations). If one is a sentient being with superior faculties, And also upholds the highest precepts, And one's merits surpass the former, One will be born in the Parinirmita-vaśavartin (Heaven of Controlling Others' Creations). Upholding precepts leads to birth in the heavens, Samādhi (meditative absorption) also does the same, If wisdom is cultivated, The force of attraction will again produce wisdom, The karmic results of good and evil deeds, My words are without falsehood or error. Through good deeds, one obtains happiness, By doing evil, one obtains suffering, In the cycle of old age, sickness, and death, The karmic results are naturally like this. Carefully observe these three phenomena, Do not be attached, one must abandon them, Seek blessings, keep away from sins, Cut off attachment to form and sound, Penetrate the true meaning, One will surely attain great liberation.
