【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks the Sutra of Firm Intention

Translated by An Shih-kao, a Tripiṭaka master from Parthia during the Later Han Dynasty

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in Śrāvastī (舍衛國), at the Jetavana-anāthapindika-ārāma (祇樹給孤獨園).

The Buddha said to Ānanda (阿難): 'I am now in meditative concentration, feeling compassion for the people of the world who do not know the true profundity of the Buddha's path. They use shallow and false words, wanting to slander and destroy the roots of the path with jealous hearts, fabricating difficulties and making things difficult for my disciples. You should understand these sinners with a righteous heart. They are either evil demons or wicked teachers, or cunning people who do not understand worldly affairs. If the Bodhisattvas (菩薩), bhikṣu-saṃgha (比丘僧), bhikṣuṇī (比丘尼), upāsaka (優婆塞), and upāsikā (優婆夷), who are well-versed in the scriptures and of noble character, can enlighten the ignorant and explain the karmic consequences of birth, death, sin, and blessings, and if they understand and believe in the truth of the path, then these are people whose sins are extinguished and blessings are increased. If they merely point and explain, like building a bridge, but their hearts are filled with confusion and they are unwilling to hear the Dharma, even if they force themselves to listen, their minds are often drowsy or they destroy the Dharma, belittle and slander the śrāmaṇa (沙門) and upāsaka, and speak evil and false words, it should be clear that such people are led by sin. The virtuous śrāmaṇa should prioritize forbearance, and be like clear water, which can purify anything. Corpses, dead dogs, dead snakes, excrement, and urine can all be washed away, yet the clarity of the water is not destroyed. One should also maintain a mind like a broom sweeping the ground, sweeping away both clean and unclean things, corpses, dead dogs, dead snakes, and excrement, yet the broom is not destroyed. One should also be like the power and light of wind and fire, which can blow away or burn corpses, dead dogs, dead snakes, and excrement, yet the power and light of wind and fire are not destroyed. If someone wants to kill me, I will not be angry; if someone wants to slander me, I will not be angry; if someone wants to defame me, I will not be angry; if someone wants to laugh at me, I will not be angry; if someone wants to destroy me, preventing me from serving the Buddha's Dharma, I will not be angry. As long as one has a compassionate heart and righteous intention, sins will be extinguished and blessings will increase, evil cannot enter the righteous path, and all evils will dissipate.'

The Buddha said to Ānanda: 'Those who have good hearts and kind intentions'

【English Translation】 English version: If a person hears the Buddha expounding the Dharma and listens with a focused mind, it is good if they can listen for a whole day; if not for a whole day, half a day is good; if not for half a day, an hour is good; if not for an hour, half an hour is good; if not for half an hour, even a short moment is good; the merit of this is immeasurable and incalculable.

『You should widely explain this sutra to all bhiksu-samghas (monk community), bhiksunis (nun community), upasakas (male lay devotees), upasikas (female lay devotees), and ordinary people, and you should also widely explain the practice of giving, planting the seeds for liberation from birth and death. On days of fasting, prepare offerings of food and invite virtuous and wise individuals, sramanas (ascetics), and Daoists who are well-versed in the scriptures from the four groups (bhiksus, bhiksunis, upasakas, and upasikas), set up high seats, lecture on the Buddhist scriptures, burn incense, and light lamps, so that the light reaches the heavens. The devas (gods) will rejoice and smile, descending from the sky, listening attentively, and all will be delighted. If someone overcomes stinginess and practices giving for blessings, the good devas (good spirits) will descend, protect the household, dispel calamities, eliminate strange occurrences, and bring benefits and auspiciousness, ultimately without resentment or evil consequences. It is like planting grains, which grow according to the type planted; planting good deeds brings blessings, planting evil deeds brings misfortune; there is no such thing as harvesting fruit without planting. You should rectify your mind, and blessings will naturally come to you; be careful not to engage in divination or be led astray by evil influences; if you harbor doubt, good devas will stay away, and your actions will lead to sinful places, and what you do will not succeed. Some do not understand the consequences of breaking precepts and instead blame the Buddha and the gods, which is of no benefit and ultimately prevents them from rectifying their minds. Men and women, whoever hears this sutra, and upholds, recites, and studies it, will surely receive blessings.』

After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, Ananda (one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha) rejoiced and stood up to pay homage to the Buddha.
