【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks of Being Subject to Dust

Translated by An Shih-kao, a Tripiṭaka master from Parthia during the Later Han Dynasty

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was wandering in the Jeta Grove (Jetavana) at Anathapindika's Park (Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma) in Shravasti (Śrāvastī).

The Buddha said, 'Oh, Bhikkhus (bhikkhu)!' The Bhikkhus replied, 'We receive your teachings.' and listened to the Buddha.

The Buddha said, 'Bhikkhus! Ordinary people, because of one dharma, are defiled by dust, deluded and sorrowful, sinking without end. I see that they cannot attain the unsurpassed path of auspiciousness. For example, a man desires to see the beauty of a woman. Therefore, a man who loves beauty is stained, intoxicated, greedy, defiled, deluded, attached, dwelling, and receptive. Because of the woman, he travels back and forth for a long time, enduring diligent suffering. The ear always wants to hear the woman's voice, the nose wants to smell her fragrance, the tongue wants to taste her flavor, and the body wants to experience her smoothness. Therefore, he travels back and forth for a long time, enduring suffering. Therefore, one should not be stained and deluded by the woman's beauty, voice, fragrance, taste, and smoothness; one should be aware of these things.'

'Furthermore, Bhikkhus! Ordinary people, because of one dharma, are defiled by dust, deluded and sorrowful, sinking without end. I see that they cannot attain the unsurpassed path of auspiciousness. For example, a woman desires to see the beauty of a man. Therefore, a woman who loves beauty is stained, intoxicated, greedy, defiled, deluded, attached, dwelling, and receptive. Because of the man, she travels back and forth for a long time, enduring suffering. Therefore, she travels back and forth for a long time, enduring suffering. Therefore, one should not be stained and deluded by the man's beauty, voice, fragrance, taste, and smoothness; one should be aware of these things.'

After the Buddha finished speaking, everyone joyfully accepted and practiced it.
