爾時善財童子從天宮下。向迦毗羅城。至善知眾藝童子所。頭頂禮敬於一面立。白言聖者。我已發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心。而未知菩薩云何學菩薩行。云何修菩薩道。我聞聖者善能教誨。愿為我說。時彼童子告善財言。善男子我得菩薩解脫。名善知眾藝。我恒稱持入此解脫根本之字。
a 阿(上)字時名由菩薩威德入無差別境界般若波羅蜜門。悟一切法本不生故。
ra 啰字時。入無邊際差別般若波羅蜜門。悟一切法離塵垢故。
pa 跛字時。入法界際般若波羅蜜門。悟一切法勝義諦不可得故。
ca 左(輕呼)字時入普輪斷差別般若波羅蜜門。悟一切法無諸行故。
na 曩(舌頭呼)字時。入無阿賴耶際般若波羅蜜門。悟一切法性相不可得故。
la 攞字時。入無垢般若波羅蜜門。悟一切法出世間故。愛支因緣永不現故。

爾時,善財童子從天宮下來,前往迦毗羅城(Kapilavastu,古印度城市),到達善知眾藝童子處,以頭頂禮敬,在一旁站立,稟告說:『聖者,我已發起阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心(anuttara-samyak-sambodhi-citta,無上正等正覺之心),但還不知道菩薩如何學習菩薩行,如何修菩薩道。我聽說聖者善於教誨,希望您能為我解說。』 當時,那位童子告訴善財說:『善男子,我得到一種菩薩解脫法門,名為善知眾藝。我經常稱念並持誦進入此解脫法門的根本之字。』
『a 阿(ā)字時,名由菩薩威德進入無差別境界般若波羅蜜門(prajna-paramita,智慧到彼岸之門),領悟一切法原本不生。』
『ra 啰(rā)字時,進入無邊際差別般若波羅蜜門,領悟一切法遠離塵垢。』

【English Translation】 English version The Chapter on Entering the Dharma Realm from the Great Expansive Buddha Flower Garland Sutra: The Forty-Two Syllable Contemplation Gate
Translated by the Tripitaka Master Amoghavajra of Daxingshan Temple, bestowed the title of Great Guangzhi, the Grand Mentor of the Nation, with the posthumous title of Dajian, formerly holding the positions of Grand Master of the Three Departments, Special Advanced Official of the Honglu Temple, and Duke of Su of the State, entitled to a fief of three thousand households, and granted the Purple Robe, posthumously awarded the title of Minister of Works, under Imperial Decree.
At that time, Sudhana (Śreṣṭhidāraka) descended from the heavenly palace and went to the city of Kapilavastu (Kapilavastu). He arrived at the place of the Youth Well-Versed in All Arts (Sumati), bowed his head in reverence, and stood to one side. He said, 'O Sage, I have already generated the mind of Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (anuttara-samyak-sambodhi-citta), but I do not yet know how a Bodhisattva should learn the conduct of a Bodhisattva, or how to cultivate the path of a Bodhisattva. I have heard that you, O Sage, are skilled in teaching, and I hope that you will explain it to me.' At that time, that youth said to Sudhana, 'Good man, I have attained a Bodhisattva liberation called Well-Versed in All Arts. I constantly recite and uphold the root syllables for entering this liberation.'
'a (ā) When contemplating the syllable 'a', it is called entering the Prajna-paramita (prajna-paramita) gate of the realm of non-differentiation through the majestic power of the Bodhisattva, realizing that all dharmas are fundamentally unborn.'
'ra (rā) When contemplating the syllable 'ra', it is entering the Prajna-paramita gate of boundless differentiation, realizing that all dharmas are free from defilement.'
'pa (pa) When contemplating the syllable 'pa', it is entering the Prajna-paramita gate of the limit of the Dharma Realm, realizing that the ultimate truth (paramartha-satya) of all dharmas is unattainable.'
'ca (ca) (pronounced lightly) When contemplating the syllable 'ca', it is entering the Prajna-paramita gate of universally severing differentiations, realizing that all dharmas are without actions.'
'na (na) (pronounced with the tongue) When contemplating the syllable 'na', it is entering the Prajna-paramita gate of the limit of no Alaya (ālayavijñāna), realizing that the nature and characteristics of all dharmas are unattainable.'
'la (la) When contemplating the syllable 'la', it is entering the Prajna-paramita gate of stainlessness, realizing that all dharmas are transcendent, and the causal condition of attachment will never appear.'
'da (da) When contemplating the syllable 'da', it is entering the Prajna-paramita gate of irreversible progress,'

【English Translation】 English version The gate of Paramita (perfection). To realize that all dharmas (teachings, phenomena) are subdued and tranquil because of the equality and non-discrimination of Suchness (Tathata, ultimate reality).
When contemplating the syllable 'ba', enter the Vajra (diamond) field Prajna Paramita (perfection of wisdom) gate, realizing that all dharmas are liberated from bondage and attain liberation.
When contemplating the syllable 'ḍa', enter the universally revolving wheel Prajna Paramita gate, realizing that all dharmas are free from heat and defilement, attaining coolness.
When contemplating the syllable 'ṣa', enter the ocean treasury Prajna Paramita gate, realizing that all dharmas are without obstruction.
When contemplating the syllable 'va', enter the universally arising and abiding Prajna Paramita gate, realizing that all dharmas are beyond the path of language.
When contemplating the syllable 'ta', enter the illuminating dust and defilement Prajna Paramita gate, realizing that all dharmas are the unmoving Suchness.

When uttering the syllable 'sva' 娑嚩(Sva) (two combined). Entering the Paramita (Boreboluomi) gate of recollecting all the Buddha's adornments. Realizing that the peaceful nature of all dharmas is unattainable.
When uttering the syllable 'dha' 馱. Entering the Paramita (Boreboluomi) gate of observing the Dharma Realm Mandala. Realizing that the holding nature of all dharmas is unattainable.
When uttering the syllable 'śa' 舍. Entering the Paramita (Boreboluomi) gate of according with all the Buddha's teachings. Realizing that the quiescent nature of all dharmas is unattainable.
When uttering the syllable 'kha' 佉(Kha) (rising tone). Entering the Paramita (Boreboluomi) gate of manifesting the treasury of wisdom in the causal ground. Realizing that the nature of all dharmas is like the void, unattainable.
When uttering the syllable 'kṣa' 訖灑(Ksha) (two combined). Entering the Paramita (Boreboluomi) gate of decisively ceasing the ocean of karmas. Realizing that the exhaustive nature of all dharmas is unattainable.
When uttering the syllable 'sta' 娑多(Sta) (two combined, rising tone). Entering the Paramita (Boreboluomi) gate of destroying all afflictions with pure light. Realizing that the nature of all dharmas, whether abiding in a proper place or not, remains unmoving and unchangeable, is unattainable.

【English Translation】 English version Because the nature of 'che' (切) dharma that can be recollected is unattainable.
When uttering the syllable 'hva' 訶嚩(two combined syllables), enter the Prajna Paramita gate of observing all sentient beings' ability to generate the ocean treasury. Realize that the nature of all dharmas that can be summoned is unattainable.
When uttering the syllable 'tsa' 哆娑(two combined syllables), enter the Prajna Paramita gate of all merits' ocean, approaching the source of practice. Realize that the valiant nature of all dharmas is unattainable.
When uttering the syllable 'gha' 伽(departing tone), enter the Prajna Paramita gate of holding all dharma clouds, the firm ocean treasury. Realize that the thick and equal nature of all dharmas is unattainable.
When uttering the syllable 'ṭha' 姹(rising tone), enter the Prajna Paramita gate of wishing to go to the ten directions and directly see all Buddhas. Realize that the accumulated nature of all dharmas is unattainable.
When uttering the syllable 'ṇa' 儜(rising tone), enter the Prajna Paramita gate of the wheel of syllables accumulating kotis of syllables. Realize that all dharmas are free from all quarrels and disputes, without going or coming, standing, walking, sitting, or lying down, which are unattainable.
When uttering the syllable 'pha' 頗, enter the Prajna Paramita gate of maturing all sentient beings and going to the Bodhi-mandala. Realize that the pervasive fruition of all dharmas is unattainable.
When uttering the syllable 'ska' 塞迦(two combined syllables, rising tone), enter the Prajna Paramita gate of the unobstructed and unattached liberation, Ksitigarbha's light wheel universally illuminating Prajna Paramita. Realize that the accumulated aggregate nature of all dharmas is unattainable.
When uttering the syllable 'ysa' 也娑(two combined syllables, rising tone), enter the Prajna Paramita gate of proclaiming the realm of all Buddha-dharmas. Realize that the aging aspect of all dharmas is unattainable.
When uttering the syllable 'śca' 室左(two combined syllables, rising tone), enter the Prajna Paramita gate of all space using dharma clouds, thunderous roars, and universal illumination of Prajna Paramita. Realize that the gathered footprints of all dharmas are unattainable.
When uttering the syllable 'ṭa' 吒(rising tone), enter the Prajna Paramita gate of benefiting sentient beings without self, reaching the ultimate boundary of Prajna Paramita. Realize that the mutually impelling nature of all dharmas is unattainable.
ḍha 荼(引去)字時。入法輪無差別藏般若波羅蜜門。悟一切法究竟處所不可得故。
善男子我稱如是入諸解脫根本字時。此四十二般若波羅蜜為首。入無量無數般若波羅蜜門。
又善男子如是字門。是能悟入法空邊際。除如是字。表諸法空。更不可得。何以故如是字義不可宣說。不可顯示。不可執取。不可書持。不可觀察。離諸相故。善男子譬如虛空是一切物所歸趣處。此諸字門亦復如是。諸法空義皆入此門。方得顯了。若菩薩摩訶薩于如是入諸字門。得善巧智。于諸言音所詮所表。皆無掛礙。於一切法平等空性。盡能證持。于眾言音鹹得善巧。若菩薩摩訶薩。能聽如是入諸字門。印阿(上)字印。聞已受持。讀誦通利為他解說。不貪名利。由此因緣得二十種殊勝功德。何等二十。謂得強憶念。得勝慚愧。得堅固力。得法旨趣。得增上覺。得殊勝慧。得無礙辯。得總持門。得無疑惑。得違順語不生恚愛。得無高下平等而住。得於有情言音善巧。得蘊善巧處善巧界善巧。得緣起善巧因善巧緣善巧法善巧。得根勝劣智善巧他心智善巧。得觀星曆善巧。得天耳智善巧宿住隨念智善巧神境智善巧死生智善巧。得漏盡智善巧。得說處非處智善巧。得往來等威儀路善巧。是為得二十種殊勝功德。善男

又,善男子,這樣的字門(這些字所代表的法門),是能夠領悟進入法空邊際的。除了這些字,用來表達諸法空性的,再也無法得到。為什麼呢?因為這些字的意義不可宣說,不可顯示,不可執取,不可書寫持誦,不可觀察,因為它們遠離一切相。善男子,譬如虛空是一切事物所歸向的地方,這些字門也像這樣,諸法空性的意義都進入這些字門,才能得以顯現。如果菩薩摩訶薩對於這樣進入諸字的法門,得到善巧的智慧,對於各種言語聲音所詮釋所表達的,都沒有障礙。對於一切法平等空性的道理,完全能夠證悟和受持。對於各種言語聲音都能得到善巧。如果菩薩摩訶薩能夠聽聞這樣進入諸字的法門,以及阿(上)字印(種子字阿),聽聞后受持,讀誦通利,為他人解說,不貪圖名利,由此因緣能夠得到二十種殊勝的功德。哪二十種呢?
一是得到強大的憶念力,二是得到殊勝的慚愧心,三是得到堅固的力量,四是得到佛法的旨趣,五是得到增上的覺悟,六是得到殊勝的智慧,七是得到無礙的辯才,八是得到總持法門(陀羅尼),九是得到沒有疑惑,十是對於違逆和順從的言語不生起嗔恨和愛戀,十一是得到沒有高下之分,平等安住,十二是對於有情眾生的言語聲音善巧,十三是得到蘊善巧(瞭解五蘊的智慧),處善巧(瞭解十二處的智慧),界善巧(瞭解十八界的智慧),十四是得到緣起善巧,因善巧,緣善巧,法善巧,十五是得到根勝劣智善巧(瞭解眾生根器優劣的智慧),他心智善巧(瞭解他人內心的智慧),十六是得到觀察星曆善巧,十七是得到天耳智善巧,宿住隨念智善巧(回憶前世的智慧),神境智善巧(神通變化的智慧),死生智善巧(瞭解眾生死生情況的智慧),十八是得到漏盡智善巧(斷除煩惱的智慧),十九是得到說處非處智善巧(瞭解何處該說,何處不該說的智慧),二十是得到往來等威儀路善巧(行走坐臥等威儀的智慧)。這就是得到的二十種殊勝功德。善男子
【English Translation】 English version ḍha: When uttering the syllable ḍha (pronounced '荼' with a departing tone). Entering the Dharma-wheel non-discriminating treasury Prajna Paramita gate (entering the Prajna Paramita Dharma gate, which is like a Dharma wheel, without discrimination, containing wisdom). Realizing that the ultimate place of all dharmas is unattainable because the nature of all dharmas is emptiness.
Good man, I say that when entering the root syllables of all liberations in this way (Good man, when I recite and enter the syllables that are the root of all liberations in this way). Taking these forty-two Prajna Paramitas as the head, entering immeasurable and countless Prajna Paramita gates (taking the Prajna Paramitas represented by these forty-two syllables as the beginning, entering immeasurable and countless Prajna Paramita Dharma gates).
Furthermore, good man, such syllable gates (the Dharma gates represented by these syllables) are capable of realizing and entering the boundary of the emptiness of dharmas. Apart from these syllables, to express the emptiness of all dharmas, nothing more can be obtained. Why? Because the meaning of these syllables cannot be spoken, cannot be shown, cannot be grasped, cannot be written and recited, cannot be observed, because they are apart from all characteristics. Good man, just as space is the place where all things return, these syllable gates are also like this; the meaning of the emptiness of all dharmas enters these gates, and then it can be revealed. If a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva obtains skillful wisdom in entering the Dharma gates of these syllables, there will be no obstacles to what is explained and expressed by various languages and sounds. He will be able to fully realize and uphold the principle of the equality and emptiness of all dharmas. He will be skillful in all languages and sounds. If a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva can hear such Dharma gates of entering the syllables, and the A (upper) syllable mudra (seed syllable A), after hearing it, receive, uphold, read, recite, and explain it to others, without being greedy for fame and profit, he can obtain twenty kinds of excellent merits because of this cause. What are the twenty?
First, obtaining strong memory; second, obtaining superior shame and remorse; third, obtaining firm strength; fourth, obtaining the purpose of the Dharma; fifth, obtaining increasing enlightenment; sixth, obtaining excellent wisdom; seventh, obtaining unobstructed eloquence; eighth, obtaining the Dharani gate (total retention); ninth, obtaining no doubts; tenth, not generating hatred or love for adverse or favorable words; eleventh, obtaining no high or low, dwelling in equality; twelfth, being skillful in the languages and sounds of sentient beings; thirteenth, obtaining skill in the aggregates (wisdom to understand the five aggregates), skill in the sense bases (wisdom to understand the twelve sense bases), skill in the realms (wisdom to understand the eighteen realms); fourteenth, obtaining skill in dependent origination, skill in causes, skill in conditions, skill in dharmas; fifteenth, obtaining skill in the knowledge of the superiority or inferiority of faculties (wisdom to understand the superior or inferior faculties of sentient beings), skill in the knowledge of others' minds (wisdom to understand the minds of others); sixteenth, obtaining skill in observing astrology; seventeenth, obtaining skill in divine hearing, skill in the recollection of past lives (wisdom to recall past lives), skill in divine powers (wisdom of supernatural transformations), skill in the knowledge of death and birth (wisdom to understand the death and birth of sentient beings); eighteenth, obtaining skill in the knowledge of the exhaustion of outflows (wisdom to eliminate afflictions); nineteenth, obtaining skill in the knowledge of what should be said and what should not be said (wisdom to understand where to speak and where not to speak); twentieth, obtaining skill in the dignified conduct of coming and going (wisdom in the dignified conduct of walking, sitting, etc.). These are the twenty kinds of excellent merits obtained. Good man
子我唯知此入諸解脫根本字智。如諸菩薩摩訶薩。能於一切世間善巧之法。以智通達。到于彼岸。而我云何能知能說彼功德行。時善財童子。頭面敬禮眾藝之足。繞無數匝戀仰而去。

【English Translation】 English version: I only know this entrance into the wisdom of letters, which is the root of all liberations. How can I know and speak of the merits and practices of those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas (great Bodhisattvas) who, with wisdom, skillfully understand all worldly dharmas and reach the other shore? At that time, Sudhana (善財童子) respectfully bowed his head to the feet of Sarvajna (眾藝), circumambulated him countless times with longing and adoration, and then departed.
