如是我聞。一時佛住毗舍離菴羅樹園大林精舍重閣講堂。與千二百五十比丘。皆阿羅漢諸漏已盡。不受後有如煉真金。身心澄靜六通無礙。其名曰大智舍利弗摩訶目揵連。摩訶迦葉摩訶迦旃延。須菩提阿㝹樓馱。劫賓那橋梵波提。畢陵伽婆蹉薄拘羅。難陀阿難陀羅睺羅。如是等眾所知識。常為天龍八部所敬。復有菩薩摩訶薩二萬人俱。大智本行皆悉成就。調伏諸根滿足六度。具佛威儀心大如海。其名曰文殊師利童子寶月童子。月光童子寶積童子。曰藏童子。跋陀婆羅菩薩。與其同類十六人俱。彌勒菩薩如是等菩薩摩訶薩二萬人。爾時世尊與四眾天龍八部人非人等恭敬圍繞。時毗舍離國一切人民遇大惡病。一者眼赤如血。二者兩耳出膿。三者鼻中流血。四者舌噤無聲。五者所食之物化為粗澀。六識閉塞猶如醉人。有五夜叉名訖拏迦羅。面黑如墨而有五眼。狗牙上出吸人精氣。時毗舍離大城之中。有一長者名曰月蓋。與其同類五百長者。俱詣佛所到佛所已頭面作禮卻住一面。

【English Translation】 English version The Dharani Sutra for Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva to Subdue and Eliminate Poisons and Harm

Translated by the Upasaka Zhu Nanti (竺難提), a resident of India during the Eastern Jin Dynasty; translated into the language of Jin by Fa Xi (法喜).

Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the great forest monastery in the Amra tree garden (庵羅樹園) of Vaisali (毗舍離), in a multi-storied lecture hall. He was with twelve hundred and fifty bhikkhus (比丘), all of whom were arhats (阿羅漢), their outflows exhausted, no longer subject to future existence, as pure as refined gold, their bodies and minds clear and still, with unobstructed six supernormal powers (六通). Their names were: the greatly wise Sariputra (舍利弗), Maha Maudgalyayana (摩訶目揵連), Maha Kasyapa (摩訶迦葉), Maha Katyayana (摩訶迦旃延), Subhuti (須菩提), Aniruddha (阿㝹樓馱), Kapilavastu (劫賓那), Gavampati (橋梵波提), Pilindavatsa (畢陵伽婆蹉), Bakula (薄拘羅), Nanda (難陀), Ananda (阿難陀), Rahula (羅睺羅). These were all well-known to the assembly and constantly revered by the eight classes of gods and dragons (天龍八部). Furthermore, there were two myriads of Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas (菩薩摩訶薩) in attendance, all accomplished in great wisdom and fundamental practice, having subdued their faculties, fulfilled the six paramitas (六度), possessing the dignified deportment of the Buddha, their minds as vast as the sea. Their names were: the youth Manjusri (文殊師利), the youth Ratnacandra (寶月), the youth Candraprabha (月光), the youth Ratnakuta (寶積), the youth Adityagarbha (曰藏), the Bodhisattva Bhadrapala (跋陀婆羅), and sixteen others of his kind. There were also two myriads of Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas such as the Bodhisattva Maitreya (彌勒). At that time, the World-Honored One (世尊) was respectfully surrounded by the four kinds of disciples (四眾), the eight classes of gods and dragons, humans and non-humans, and others. At that time, all the people of the country of Vaisali were afflicted with a great and terrible disease: first, their eyes were as red as blood; second, pus flowed from both ears; third, blood flowed from their noses; fourth, their tongues were stiff and they could not speak; fifth, the food they ate turned coarse and unpalatable; their six consciousnesses (六識) were blocked, as if they were drunk. There were five yakshas (夜叉) named Krnakala (訖拏迦羅), their faces as black as ink, with five eyes, their dog teeth protruding upwards, sucking the essence of people's vital energy. At that time, in the great city of Vaisali, there was a householder (長者) named Candraprabha (月蓋), and five hundred householders of his kind, who together went to the place where the Buddha was. Having arrived, they prostrated themselves before the Buddha, touching their heads to the ground, and then stood to one side.


白言世尊。此國人民遇大惡病。良醫耆婆盡其道術所不能救。唯愿天尊慈愍一切。救濟病苦令得無患。爾時世尊告長者言。去此不遠正主西方。有佛世尊名無量壽。彼有菩薩名觀世音及大勢至。恒以大悲憐愍一切救濟苦厄。汝今應當五體投地向彼作禮。燒香散華繫念數息。令心不散經十念頃。為眾生故當請彼佛及二菩薩。說是語時于佛光中。得見西方無量壽佛並二菩薩。如來神力佛及菩薩俱到此國。往毗舍離住城門閫。佛二菩薩與諸大眾放大光明。照毗舍離皆作金色。爾時毗舍離人。即具楊枝凈水。授與觀世音菩薩。大悲觀世音。憐愍救護一切眾生故而說咒曰。普教一切眾生而作是言。汝等今者應當一心稱。南無佛南無法南無僧。南無觀世音菩薩摩訶薩。大悲大名稱救護苦厄者。如此三稱三寶。三稱觀世音菩薩名。燒眾名香五體投地。向于西方一心一意令氣息定。為免苦厄請觀世音。合十指掌而說偈言。

白佛言世尊。如是神咒必定吉祥。乃是過去現在未來十

【English Translation】 English version: The elder said to the World Honored One: 'The people of this country are suffering from a great and terrible disease, which even the skilled physician Jivaka (ancient famous doctor) cannot cure with all his medical skills. I beseech the World Honored One to have compassion and pity on all beings, to relieve their suffering from illness, and to grant them freedom from worry.' At that time, the World Honored One told the elder, 'Not far from here to the west, there is a Buddha World Honored One named Amitayus (Amitabha). There are two Bodhisattvas there named Avalokiteśvara and Mahāsthāmaprāpta. They constantly have great compassion and pity for all beings, relieving their suffering and difficulties. You should now prostrate yourself with the five limbs touching the ground, pay homage to them, burn incense, scatter flowers, focus your mind and regulate your breath, so that your mind is not scattered, for the duration of ten recitations. For the sake of all beings, you should invite that Buddha and the two Bodhisattvas.' As the World Honored One spoke these words, from the light of the Buddha, people saw Amitayus Buddha of the West and the two Bodhisattvas. By the divine power of the Tathagata, the Buddha and the Bodhisattvas came together to this country, went to Vaiśālī (ancient Indian city) and stayed at the city gate. The Buddha, the two Bodhisattvas, and the great assembly emitted great light, illuminating Vaiśālī, making everything golden. At that time, the people of Vaiśālī immediately prepared willow branches and pure water, and offered them to Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva. The Great Compassionate Avalokiteśvara, in order to have compassion and protect all beings, then spoke the mantra, universally teaching all beings, and said: 'You should now single-mindedly recite: Namo Buddhaya (Homage to the Buddha), Namo Dharmaya (Homage to the Dharma), Namo Saṃghaya (Homage to the Sangha), Namo Avalokiteśvarāya Bodhisattvāya Mahāsattvāya (Homage to Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahasattva), the one who protects those in distress with great compassion and a great name.' Like this, recite the Three Jewels three times, recite the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva three times, burn various famous incenses, prostrate with the five limbs touching the ground, face the West, and single-mindedly stabilize your breath. To be free from suffering, pray to Avalokiteśvara, join your ten fingers together, and say the following verse: 'May you save me from suffering, Covering everything with great compassion, Universally emitting pure light, Eliminating ignorance and darkness. To be free from the suffering of killing, Afflictions and various diseases, You will surely come to my place, Bestowing great peace and happiness upon me. I now bow my head in reverence, To the one who is known to save from difficulties, I now take refuge in myself, The compassionate father of the world. May you surely come, Free me from the suffering of the three poisons, Grant me happiness in this life, And great Nirvana.' 【English Translation】 English version: The Mudra-seal Dharani of All Buddhas' Great Compassion. Those who hear this mantra will have all suffering eternally exhausted, constantly attain peace and happiness, and stay far from the Eight Difficulties. They will attain the Samadhi of mindfulness of the Buddha and see the Buddha appear before them. I will now speak the divine mantra of all Buddhas of the ten directions who rescue and protect sentient beings.

Tadyatha, uhu ni (named good throat ghost), mohu ni (named ignorant ghost), jia po ni (named afraid of people ghost), dan po ni (named rebellious ghost), an cha li (named not white ghost), ban cha li (named white ghost), shou pi di (named green ghost), ban ban cha cha la la (named ghost mother before ghost mother), po si ni duo zhi tuo (thus), yi li mei li (named going ghost), ti li shou li (named rebellious ghost), jia bo li (named wearing skull ghost and bound to both cheeks), qu di duan qi (named eating children ghost), zhan tuo li (named approaching people ghost), mo deng qi (named lion head ghost, demon king ghost, lion head), laksha laksha (protect all sentient beings), sarva sattva sarva bhaya pi (meaning all possible ghosts), qian he (meaning go away), duo cha tuo qie di qie di ni qie di (meaning already gone), xiu liu pi xiu liu pi (go, don't come, don't come), laksha laksha (meaning protect), sarva bhaya pi qian he (meaning go away).

The Buddha was addressed, 'World Honored One, this divine mantra is proclaimed by the countless Buddhas of the ten directions and three periods of time. Those who recite and uphold this mantra will always be protected by all Buddhas and great Bodhisattvas, and will be freed from fear, weapons, poisons, and illnesses, so that they will be without affliction.' As these words were spoken, the people of Vaishali (a city in ancient India) were restored to their original state.

At that time, the World Honored One, out of compassion for sentient beings and to protect all, again requested Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva) to speak the Dharani mantra for subduing and eliminating poisons and harms. At that time, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva), with great compassion filling his heart, relying on the Buddha's divine power, spoke the Dharani mantra for breaking evil karmic obstacles and subduing and eliminating poisons and harms.

Namo Buddhaya (Homage to the Buddha), Namo Dharmaya (Homage to the Dharma), Namo Sanghaya (Homage to the Sangha), Namo Avalokiteśvaraya Bodhisattva Mahasattvaya (Homage to Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, the Great Being), with great kindness and great compassion, I only wish that you have pity on me, rescue me from suffering and protect me.

一切的恐懼,一切的毒害,一切的惡鬼、虎狼、獅子,聽到此咒時,口立即閉塞,不能造成傷害。如果有人破壞梵行,造作十惡業,聽到此咒時,盪滌清除糞穢,重新獲得清凈。如果有人有業障、濁惡不善,稱念觀世音菩薩的名號,誦持此咒,就能破除業障,當下見到佛。佛告訴阿難,如果有四部弟子,受持觀世音菩薩的名號,誦唸消伏毒害的陀羅尼,修行此咒的人,身體常常沒有疾病,內心也沒有病痛。即使大火從四面八方而來焚燒自身,誦持此咒的緣故,龍王就會降雨,立即得到解脫。如果火焚燒身體,關節疼痛,一心稱念觀世音菩薩的名號,三遍誦持此咒,就能得到痊癒。如果遇到穀物昂貴、饑荒、王難,惡獸、盜賊,迷失道路,被關在牢獄中,被杻械枷鎖束縛,被五種刑具捆綁,進入大海,遭遇黑風和迴旋的波浪。

【English Translation】 English version May all beings filled with fear obtain great protection.

All fears, all poisons, all evil ghosts, tigers, wolves, and lions, when they hear this mantra, their mouths immediately close, and they cannot cause harm. If someone breaks the pure conduct, commits the ten evil deeds, when they hear this mantra, the filth is washed away, and they regain purity. If someone has karmic obstacles, turbidity, evil, and unwholesomeness, reciting the name of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva and holding this mantra, they can break through karmic obstacles and see the Buddha immediately. The Buddha told Ananda, if there are disciples of the four assemblies who uphold the name of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, recite the Dharani that subdues poisons and harms, those who practice this mantra will always be free from illness in body and mind. Even if great fires come from all directions and burn their bodies, by virtue of reciting this mantra, the Dragon King will send down rain, and they will immediately be liberated. If the fire burns the body and the joints ache, sincerely reciting the name of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva and reciting this mantra three times, they will be healed. If one encounters expensive grains, famine, royal disasters, evil beasts, thieves, gets lost on the road, is imprisoned, bound by shackles and fetters, tied with five kinds of restraints, enters the great sea, encounters black winds and swirling waves.

Because of these causes and conditions, one endures all suffering and is filled with great fear. At this time, one should single-mindedly recite the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and recite this mantra from one to seven times, which can eliminate poison, evil karma, evil deeds, and the accumulation of unwholesome evil. These evil karmas are like firewood burned by fire, forever burned out, leaving no residue. Because of this cause and condition, this divine mantra spoken by Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva is called the sweet dew medicine that bestows upon all sentient beings, enabling sentient beings to obtain fearlessness from disease, fearlessness from untimely death, fearlessness from being bound, and fearlessness from the three poisons of greed, anger, and ignorance. Therefore, this Saha world calls Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva the giver of fearlessness. This Dharani (a type of mantra) empowerment chapter is the supreme Brahma-caryā (pure conduct), which will surely bring auspiciousness and is a vast ocean of merit. Sentient beings who hear this mantra will obtain great joy and should recite it silently. If one wishes to recite this mantra, one should observe a fast, not drink alcohol, not eat meat, smear the body with ash, bathe to purify the body, not eat asafoetida (a strong-smelling plant) and the five pungent spices (five spicy vegetables), and not eat anything that can emit a strong odor. That ghost transformed into the form of a man day and night to harass this woman. The ghost's essence entered her body, and she gave birth to five hundred ghost children. Do you remember this event? At that time, I taught this woman to recite the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, and her good thoughts continued, entering a good realm. Ananda, you should know that the power of this Bodhisattva's majestic spirit can subdue evil spirits, allowing her to see my incomparable form. At that time, every pore of my body manifested a precious lotus flower, and countless manifested Buddhas praised the great compassionate giver of fearlessness with one voice, allowing this woman to receive, recite, and master this mantra. The merit of this mantra can eliminate the three obstacles (klesha-avarana, karma-avarana, vipaka-avarana) forever, freeing one from the hellfire of the three realms (desire realm, form realm, formless realm), not suffering various pains, and the four hundred and four diseases will not arise at once. If there are sentient beings who enter the battlefield and face the danger of being killed, reciting this mantra and reciting the name of the great compassionate Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, like a falcon flying swiftly, they will immediately be liberated.

They should recite my name three times and chant the Great Auspicious Six-Syllable Verse, the Saving-from-Suffering Divine Mantra. And recite the mantra as follows:

If they are hungry and thirsty, he will transform into springs, fruits, and food, so that they can be satisfied. Suppose someone encounters great misfortune, losing their country, wife, property, and meeting with hateful enemies, if they recite the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, chanting this mantra, focusing their minds on the recitation with each breath, without distraction, for forty-nine days, then the Great Compassionate One will transform into a celestial being, or transform into a powerful ghost-spirit king, taking them back to their homeland, so that they can be safe and secure. If someone enters the sea to gather treasures, or in empty mountains and wilderness encounters tigers, wolves, lions, poisonous insects, vipers, scorpions, Yakshas (Yaksa), Rakshasas (Rakshasa), Kumbhandas (Kumbhanda), and various evil ghosts that devour essence and energy, if they recite the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva three times and chant this mantra, they will be liberated. If a woman has a difficult childbirth and is near death, if she recites the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva three times and upholds and recites this mantra, she will be liberated, even if she encounters great thieves stealing her wealth.'

The majestic power of this mantra is immeasurable, enabling beings to escape the suffering of hell, the suffering of hungry ghosts, the suffering of animals, the suffering of asuras (a type of warring deity), and the eight difficulties. It is like water extinguishing fire, completely and without remainder. Ānanda, you should know that if one receives and upholds the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and also holds this mantra, one will obtain great benefits, subduing poisons and harms. In this life and future lives, all inauspicious events will be completely and without remainder eliminated. Maintaining precepts, being diligent and advancing, mindfulness, concentration, and total retention will all be fully attained. Ānanda, you should know that if one hears this six-syllable verse, the supreme divine mantra that is the King of Healing who saves from suffering, and calls upon the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva with great compassion, one's sinful defilements will be eliminated. Immediately in this very life, one will see eighty billion Buddhas who will all come and extend their hands, speaking of the merit, virtuous power, and six-syllable verse of the one who bestows fearlessness with great compassion. Because of seeing the Buddhas, one will immediately obtain the Unforgettable Revolving Dharani (dhāraṇī, a mnemonic device, a summary of teachings). At that time, the World Honored One spoke the following verse:

Great compassion, great renown, Auspicious and happy person,  Constantly speaking auspicious phrases, Saving those in extreme suffering.  If beings hear the name, They will be liberated from suffering,  Even playing in hell, Great compassionately bearing suffering on their behalf.  Or dwelling among animals, Transforming into the form of animals,  Teaching with great wisdom, Causing them to generate unsurpassed minds.  Or dwelling among asuras, Softly speaking to subdue their minds,  Causing them to eliminate habits of arrogance and pride, Quickly reaching the shore of non-action.  Manifesting as hungry ghosts, Hands producing fragrant, colored milk,  For those oppressed by hunger and thirst, Bestowing it so they may be satisfied.  With great kindness and great compassion, Playing in the five paths,  Constantly gathering wisdom with goodness, Universally teaching all beings.  With unsurpassed, excellent expedient means, Causing them to leave the suffering of birth and death,  Constantly attaining peaceful and happy places, Reaching the shore of great Nirvana.

At that time, the World Honored One, having spoken these words, said to Ānanda, 'This six-syllable verse.'

In this life and future lives, all inauspicious events will be completely and without remainder eliminated. Maintaining precepts, being diligent and advancing, mindfulness, concentration, and total retention will all be fully attained. Ānanda, you should know that if one hears this six-syllable verse, the supreme divine mantra that is the King of Healing who saves from suffering, and calls upon the name of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva with great compassion, one's sinful defilements will be eliminated. Immediately in this very life, one will see eighty billion Buddhas who will all come and extend their hands, speaking of the merit, virtuous power, and six-syllable verse of the one who bestows fearlessness with great compassion. Because of seeing the Buddhas, one will immediately obtain the Unforgettable Revolving Dharani (dhāraṇī, a mnemonic device, a summary of teachings). At that time, the World Honored One spoke the following verse:

Great compassion, great renown, Auspicious and happy person,  Constantly speaking auspicious phrases, Saving those in extreme suffering.  If beings hear the name, They will be liberated from suffering,  Even playing in hell, Great compassionately bearing suffering on their behalf.  Or dwelling among animals, Transforming into the form of animals,  Teaching with great wisdom, Causing them to generate unsurpassed minds.  Or dwelling among asuras, Softly speaking to subdue their minds,  Causing them to eliminate habits of arrogance and pride, Quickly reaching the shore of non-action.  Manifesting as hungry ghosts, Hands producing fragrant, colored milk,  For those oppressed by hunger and thirst, Bestowing it so they may be satisfied.  With great kindness and great compassion, Playing in the five paths,  Constantly gathering wisdom with goodness, Universally teaching all beings.  With unsurpassed, excellent expedient means, Causing them to leave the suffering of birth and death,  Constantly attaining peaceful and happy places, Reaching the shore of great Nirvana.

At that time, the World Honored One, having spoken these words, said to Ānanda, 'This six-syllable verse.'

【English Translation】 English version: After these words were spoken, in the great city of Rājagṛha (ancient Indian city), there was a Bhikṣu (monk) named Upasena (name of a Bhikṣu), who was diligent and brave, diligently practicing difficult and ascetic practices, as if trying to save his own head. He was in the burial ground surrounded by countless people, personally recounting the various evil deeds he had committed in the past, killing countless beings. Later, he heard the six-syllable mantra of Avalokiteśvara (name of a Bodhisattva), contemplating with right mindfulness, observing the heart and heart channels, focusing his mind in one place, and saw Avalokiteśvara, immediately attaining liberation and becoming an Arhat (Buddhist attainment).

How can one see Avalokiteśvara and the Buddhas of the ten directions? If you wish to see them, you should straighten your body and mind, keep your mind still, and let your breath continue. Place your left hand on your right hand, raise your tongue to the palate, and regulate your breath evenly, so that it is neither coarse nor fine, but peaceful. Slowly count from one to ten, achieving mindfulness of breath, without scattering your mind, keeping your breath neither coarse nor outward-directed, neither stagnant nor slippery, inhaling like a baby sucking milk. The color of the breath should be neither blue nor white, but harmoniously balanced. From the tip of the heart downwards, select a central channel from the forty channels, allowing the breath to securely reach the fourteen channels. The breath arises from the large channel, reaching under the tongue, and then from the tongue channel to the tip of the tongue. The color of the breath should be neither blue nor white, nor yellow nor black, like a crystal vessel, extending straight for eight inches, reaching the tip of the nose, and then returning to the root of the heart, making the heart clear and pure.

The Buddha (the Awakened One) told the Bhikṣus: 'This great diligent and brave banner of the six-syllable mantra can eliminate poisons and has the merit of great compassion. Avalokiteśvara uses this method of counting breaths, and because of the power of mental concentration, like a rapid stream of water, he quickly sees Avalokiteśvara and the Buddhas of the ten directions.'

The Buddha told the Bhikṣus: 'Listen carefully. If you wish to taste the nectar of the unsurpassed Dharma, if you Bhikṣus have already left home, you should restrain yourselves, not violate the rules of conduct, sit upright and receive, without outward-directed thoughts, observing suffering, emptiness, impermanence, decay, and that it will soon perish. Practice the five gates of meditation, and you should observe your own body, from head to toe, each joint, keeping your mind focused there without scattering. Carefully observe the joints, like a banana tree, empty both inside and out. You should know that form, feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness are also like this.'

When the Buddha spoke these words, the Venerable Śāriputra (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples) was in the burial ground, returning to sit under the tree, already liberated.

【English Translation】 English version The Buddha sat upright in meditative concentration, entering into Samadhi (a state of profound meditation) with his body radiating true golden light, causing countless people who saw him to rejoice and generate Bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment). At that time, Upasena (a personal name) immediately arose from his seat and went to the Venerable Sariputra (one of the Buddha's ten principal disciples, known for his wisdom), prostrating himself with his head touching the ground and paying homage at his feet. He said, 'Venerable One, the Tathagata (one of the Buddha's titles) previously praised mindfulness of breathing (Anapanasati, mindfulness of breath) saying that through this cause and condition, great benefits can be obtained. How does one practice mindfulness of breathing? How does one restrain the eye, eye-consciousness, and their corresponding object of sight (Rupa, visual object)? How does one restrain the ear, ear-consciousness, and their corresponding object of sound (Sabda, auditory object)? How does one restrain the nose, nose-consciousness, and their corresponding object of smell (Gandha, olfactory object)? How does one restrain the tongue, tongue-consciousness, and their corresponding object of taste (Rasa, gustatory object)? How does one restrain the mind, mind-consciousness, and their corresponding object of thought (Dharma, mental object)? How does one restrain the various inverted perceptions (Viparyasa, distorted perceptions) and their corresponding inversions? How does one restrain the objects of sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch, along with their subtle smoothness? This thief of consciousness, like a monkey, jumps around, playing in the six sense organs (eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind), and wandering through all dharmas (phenomena); how can it be restrained?' Then Sariputra said to Upasena, 'You should now contemplate the earth element (Prthivi-dhatu, one of the elements constituting the material world, representing solidity): the earth element has no inherent solidity. The water element (Apo-dhatu, one of the elements constituting the material world, representing fluidity): the nature of the water element does not abide. The wind element (Vayu-dhatu, one of the elements constituting the material world, representing movement): the nature of the wind element is unimpeded. From inverted thoughts arises the fire element (Tejo-dhatu, one of the elements constituting the material world, representing heat): the nature of the fire element is unreal. Form (Rupa, matter), feeling (Vedana, sensation), perception (Samjna, cognition), mental formations (Samskara, volition), and consciousness (Vijnana, awareness)—these five aggregates (Skandha, the five aggregates that constitute individual existence) arise from dependent origination; their nature is the same as water, fire, and wind, and all should enter into the state of suchness (Yathabhutam, the true state of things as they are).' At that time, upon hearing these words, Upasena's body was like water and fire merging, and he attained the four Dhyanas (Catur-dhyana, the four meditative absorptions), comprehending that the five aggregates are empty and without substance. He destroyed all the bonds of affliction, and his mind was suddenly liberated. He attained the state of Arhat (Arhat, a liberated being who has extinguished all defilements), and fire emanated from his body. He then shattered his body and entered Parinirvana (Parinirvana, complete Nirvana, cessation of rebirth). Then Sariputra collected his relics (Sarira, bodily remains) and built a stupa (a mound-like or hemispherical structure containing relics) over them. Afterwards, he paid homage to the Buddha and reported to him, 'World Honored One, the Buddha's teachings on Samadhi are the first nectar, the unsurpassed flavor of the Dharma. If one partakes of it, the body will become as clear as crystal, and one will even be able to see the Buddha through one's pores. Contemplating ignorance (Avidya, lack of knowledge of the true nature of reality), volitional formations (Samskara, karmic formations), and even old age and death (Jara-marana, aging and death), their nature is all unreal, like an echo in an empty valley, like a banana tree without substance, like a mirage in the hot season, like the running of wild horses, like a Gandharva city (Gandharva-nagara, a mirage), like a bubble on water, like a dream, like an illusion, like dew, like lightning. By carefully contemplating the twelve links of dependent origination (Dvadasanga-pratityasamutpada, the twelve links that constitute the cycle of rebirth), one can attain the path of a Pratyekabuddha (Pratyekabuddha, a solitary enlightened being who attains enlightenment without the aid of a teacher). Or one can enter into silent meditation, the crystal Samadhi, see countless Buddhas, generate the unsurpassed Bodhicitta, cultivate pure conduct, and abide in the state of non-retrogression.' The Buddha said to Sariputra, 'Just as Upasena heard me speak this great compassion'


章句數息定法。破無數億洞然之惡。成阿羅漢具戒定智解脫知見。身出水火碎身滅度。令無數人發大善心。舍利弗當知若善男子善女人。得聞觀世音菩薩大悲名號。及消伏毒害六字章句。數息繫念凈行之法。除無數劫所造惡業破惡業障。現身得見無量無邊諸佛。聞說妙法隨意無礙。發三種清凈三菩提心。若有宿世罪業因緣。及現所造極重惡行。夢中得見觀世音菩薩。如大猛風吹于重云皆悉四散。得離重罪惡業生諸佛前。佛說是語已告舍利弗。我今為此受持觀世音菩薩名號。消伏毒害無上章句。說偈讚歎。

【English Translation】 English version: The Sutra on the Fixed Method of Counting Breaths and Phrases. It destroys countless billions of profound evils, and accomplishes the state of an Arhat (one who has extinguished all afflictions and attained liberation), complete with precepts, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the knowledge and vision of liberation. By practicing this method, one's body can emit water and fire, and even shatter into pieces and enter Nirvana, enabling countless people to generate great virtuous minds. Sariputra (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, known for his wisdom), you should know that if a good man or good woman can hear the great compassionate name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (the Bodhisattva known for compassion), as well as the six-syllable phrases that eliminate and subdue poisons, and practice the pure conduct of counting breaths and focusing the mind, they can eliminate the evil karma created over countless kalpas, break through the obstacles of evil karma, and in this very life, see countless and boundless Buddhas, hear them expound the wonderful Dharma, freely and without hindrance, and generate the three pure Bodhicitta (the mind of seeking enlightenment). If someone has karmic connections of past sins, as well as extremely grave evil deeds committed in this life, and can see Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in a dream, just as a great fierce wind blows away heavy clouds, all their sins will dissipate, allowing them to escape grave sins and evil karma, and be reborn before the Buddhas. After the Buddha finished speaking these words, he told Sariputra, 'Now, for the sake of upholding the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and the supreme phrases that eliminate and subdue poisons, I will speak a verse of praise.'

'I command Dhritarashtra (one of the Four Heavenly Kings, the Guardian of the Nation) and others, to protect with compassion those who uphold this Sutra, so that those who hear the name of great compassion are protected like princes by legal ministers. I command the dragon Elapatra (name of a dragon king), to protect with compassion those who uphold this Sutra, as if protecting one's own eyes, cherishing one's own child, never leaving them day and night, six times a day. I command Yama Rakshasa (name of a Yaksha), and countless poisonous dragons and dragon daughters, to protect with compassion those who uphold this Sutra, as if cherishing the crown of their heads, daring not to touch it. I command Virudhaka (one of the Four Heavenly Kings, the King of Growth), to protect with compassion those who uphold this Sutra, as a mother loves her child, never tiring, protecting their every movement, whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down. I command Nanda (name of a dragon king), Upananda (name of a dragon king), Sagara (name of a dragon king), Upata (name of a dragon king), to protect with compassion those who uphold this Sutra, respectfully making offerings, and bowing at their feet, just as the gods serve Indra (the Lord of the Gods), and as filial children respect their parents, like a poor person guarding their treasures, like a blind person needing eyes and correct guidance. 【English Translation】 English version With a compassionate heart, protect, uphold, recite, and receive the empowerment mantra. The hells will be purified like lotuses, and the realm of hungry ghosts will be shattered, free from the eight difficulties. After rebirth, one will enter Samadhi (meditative absorption) before the Buddha, and will certainly attain the state of non-retrogression. Universally bestow great bliss upon all beings, and teach them to cultivate the ten grounds (Dasabhumika, the ten stages of a Bodhisattva's practice). From countless Buddhas in the past, I have heard this mantra for subduing and eliminating poisons. It can eliminate the three obstacles (greed, hatred, and delusion), remove all evils, perfect the five eyes (physical eye, divine eye, wisdom eye, Dharma eye, and Buddha eye), and ultimately attain Bodhi (enlightenment). Forever acting as parents to beings in the three realms (desire realm, form realm, and formless realm), bestowing upon them peace and happiness, allowing them to find cessation. If anyone hears my name, and also hears the name of Great Compassionate Avalokiteshvara (the Bodhisattva of Compassion), reciting this mantra will keep them away from all evils, and they will not fall into the hells or the animal realm. They will be born from a lotus, with the lotus as their parents, their hearts pure and soft, without defilement. They will surely hear the supreme great wisdom light, their minds as stable and immovable as the earth. All Buddhas appear in the world, their light shining like the sun and moon. Their bodies emit the light of great wisdom, like a burning mountain of purple gold. From the thirty-two marks (Mahapurusa Laksana, the 32 auspicious marks of a Buddha), flow forth the eighty minor marks (Anuvyanjana, the 80 minor perfections of a Buddha). Like Mount Sumeru (Sumeru, the sacred mountain in Buddhist cosmology), reflecting and appearing above the great ocean. Beings who hear the Buddha's name will forever be liberated from the three evil paths (hell, hungry ghost, and animal realms). The Buddha told Shariputra, 'Such a consecration Dharani verse is certainly auspicious. If anyone hears, receives, upholds, and recites it, they will break through the obstacles of evil karma and will never die an untimely death.' Shariputra said to the Buddha, 'World Honored One, such a divine mantra, a great auspicious verse, universally bestows upon all beings, making them fearless. From which Buddha in the past did the World Honored One hear this verse? May the World Honored One explain it in detail, so that beings in the future may universally hear and know it, obtain great peace and joy, and be free from untimely death, and not be harmed by knives, staves, poison, medicine, water, fire, thieves, or robbers.' The Buddha told Shariputra, 'From countless Buddhas in the past, I heard this verse, received, upheld, and recited it, and immediately transcended the sins of eighty million kalpas of birth and death. Moreover, I recall that eighty hundred thousand kalpas ago, there was a Buddha World Honored One named 'Victorious Over All Worlds' (a Buddha who surpasses all worlds), complete with the Ten Titles. That Buddha World Honored One expounded the above verse for me, and I immediately counted my breaths, keeping my mind from scattering. Suddenly, the sound dissolved and subdued the afflictions, and I obtained the forbearance of non-birth, dwelling in the Shurangama Samadhi. If good men or good women hear this sutra, receive, uphold, recite, write, and explain it, they will immediately transcend countless, numberless asamkhya kalpas of the sins of birth and death, subdue poisons and harms, and not encounter misfortune.' When the Buddha spoke these words, five hundred sons of elders obtained the forbearance of non-birth, and countless humans and devas aroused the mind of Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi. Shariputra, Ananda, and others said to the Buddha, 'World Honored One, this is the Samadhi Sea of Contemplating the Buddha, please, the Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva's Dharani mantra for subduing poisons and harms, wherever it goes, everything is auspicious, as it is loved and respected by the Brahma King and his assembly.' The Buddha told Ananda, 'So it is, so it is, as you say. If good men or good women hear the title of this sutra, they will always see the Buddha and all the Bodhisattvas, possess complete good roots, and be born in pure Buddha lands.' When this chapter was spoken, eighty billion devas, deva maidens, dragons, and ghosts all rejoiced and aroused the Bodhi mind. Shariputra, Ananda, and others, having heard what the Buddha said, bowed to the Buddha and withdrew.
