西天譯經三藏朝散大夫試光祿卿明教大師臣法賢奉 詔譯

如是我聞。一時佛在廣嚴城。與大比丘眾舍利子等五百人俱。復有慈氏等大菩薩眾。恭敬圍繞敷座而坐。爾時會中有一菩薩名曰普賢。從座而起詣世尊前。偏袒右肩右膝著地。合掌向佛白言世尊。有觀自在菩薩母陀羅尼大明章句。乃是過去現在未來諸佛世尊隨喜宣說。我佛世尊為菩薩時。為求正等正覺利益眾生故。亦曾宣說此陀羅尼。又復此陀羅尼。與求菩薩善男子善女人為父為母。亦如孤獨而得依怙。無主宰者當得主宰。彼陀羅尼若人讀誦得已受持者。一切罪業悉得消滅。一切行愿皆得圓滿。乃至修諸大明亦獲成就。

佛告普賢菩薩言。誠如汝說。我念往昔。為菩薩時。為求正等正覺。度如誐鵝沙數無量無邊世界。彼有佛土名蘇珂嚩帝。彼土有佛號無量壽如來應供正等正覺。是無量壽佛於今現在。常說妙法利益眾生。我于彼會為婆羅門名自在光。我時已得證發光地。于彼會中已曾宣說此觀自在菩薩母陀羅尼。當與百千那由他無量無邊眾生作大利益。時在會中一切大眾。聞是陀羅尼已。有罪業者皆悉消

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本 如是我聞。一時,佛在廣嚴城,與包括舍利子在內的五百位大比丘眾在一起。還有慈氏(Maitreya,即彌勒菩薩)等大菩薩眾,恭敬地圍繞著佛,在鋪設好的座位上坐下。當時,法會中有一位菩薩,名叫普賢(Samantabhadra)。他從座位上站起來,走到世尊(佛)面前,袒露右肩,右膝著地,合掌向佛稟告說:『世尊,有一個觀自在菩薩(Avalokiteśvara)母陀羅尼大明章句,是過去、現在、未來諸佛世尊都隨喜宣說的。我佛世尊在做菩薩的時候,爲了求得正等正覺,利益眾生,也曾宣說過這個陀羅尼。而且,這個陀羅尼,對於尋求菩薩道的善男子、善女人來說,如同父母一般,又如同孤獨的人得到了依靠,沒有主宰的人得到了主宰。如果有人讀誦、接受並持守這個陀羅尼,一切罪業都能夠消滅,一切行愿都能夠圓滿,乃至修習各種大明(即真言),也能獲得成就。』 佛告訴普賢菩薩說:『確實像你所說的那樣。我記得過去,當我還是菩薩的時候,爲了求得正等正覺,度過了如誐鵝沙數(Gaga sandhya,數量單位,指恒河沙數)那樣無量無邊的世界。在那些世界中,有一個佛土,名叫蘇珂嚩帝(Sukhavati,即極樂世界)。那個佛土有一尊佛,名為無量壽如來應供正等正覺(Amitabha Tathagata Arhat Samyak-sambuddha,即阿彌陀佛)。這位無量壽佛現在仍然存在,經常宣說妙法,利益眾生。我在那個法會上,是一位婆羅門,名叫自在光。那時,我已經證得了發光地(Prabhasvara-bhumi,菩薩十地之一)。在那個法會中,我已經宣說過這個觀自在菩薩母陀羅尼,應當給成百上千那由他(Nayuta,數量單位)無量無邊的眾生帶來巨大的利益。』當時在法會中的一切大眾,聽聞了這個陀羅尼之後,有罪業的人都消除了罪業。

【English Translation】 English version Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was in the city of Vaisali, together with a great assembly of five hundred Bhikshus, including Shariputra. There were also great Bodhisattvas such as Maitreya, respectfully surrounding and seated around the Buddha. At that time, in the assembly, there was a Bodhisattva named Samantabhadra. He rose from his seat, approached the World-Honored One, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and, with palms joined, said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One, there is a great luminous chapter of the Avalokiteśvara Mother Dharani, which has been joyfully proclaimed by the Buddhas, World-Honored Ones, of the past, present, and future. When our Buddha, World-Honored One, was a Bodhisattva, for the sake of seeking perfect enlightenment and benefiting sentient beings, He also proclaimed this Dharani. Moreover, this Dharani is like a father and mother to good men and good women who seek the Bodhisattva path. It is like a refuge for the lonely, and a master for those without a master. If someone reads, receives, and upholds this Dharani, all sins will be extinguished, all vows will be fulfilled, and even the practice of various great luminous mantras will be accomplished.' The Buddha said to the Bodhisattva Samantabhadra: 'Truly, as you say. I remember in the past, when I was a Bodhisattva, for the sake of seeking perfect enlightenment, I crossed countless worlds, as numerous as the sands of the Gaga sandhya. In those worlds, there was a Buddha-land named Sukhavati. In that land, there was a Buddha named Amitabha Tathagata Arhat Samyak-sambuddha. That Amitabha Buddha is still present, constantly expounding the wonderful Dharma to benefit sentient beings. In that assembly, I was a Brahmin named Free Light. At that time, I had already attained the Prabhasvara-bhumi. In that assembly, I had already proclaimed this Avalokiteśvara Mother Dharani, which should bring great benefit to hundreds of thousands of Nayutas of countless sentient beings.' At that time, all the assembly, upon hearing this Dharani, had their sins extinguished.


滅。未得宿命智者獲宿命智。

爾時世尊復告普賢菩薩言。汝為利益當來末法五濁惡世。百千俱胝無量無邊。造無間業罪惡眾生得罪消滅。令孤獨者有依怙故。欲隨喜宣說觀自在菩薩母陀羅尼。善哉善哉汝可宣說。普賢菩薩蒙佛許已。即說觀自在菩薩母陀羅尼曰。

這時,世尊又告訴普賢菩薩說:『你爲了利益未來末法五濁惡世中,百千俱胝無量無邊的造作無間地獄罪業的罪惡眾生,使他們的罪業得以消滅,讓孤獨無助的人有所依靠,想要隨喜宣說觀自在菩薩母陀羅尼(Avalokiteśvara-mātṛ-dhāraṇī,觀世音菩薩的根本咒)。很好,很好,你可以宣說。』普賢菩薩得到佛的允許后,隨即宣說了觀自在菩薩母陀羅尼,內容如下:

【English Translation】 English version: Extinction. Those who have not attained knowledge of previous lives will attain knowledge of previous lives.

At that time, the World Honored One again told Bodhisattva Samantabhadra: 'For the benefit of sentient beings in the future Dharma-ending Age of the Five Turbidities, hundreds of thousands of kotis, immeasurable and boundless, who have committed evil deeds that lead to uninterrupted hell, so that their sins may be extinguished, and that the lonely may have refuge, you wish to joyfully proclaim the Avalokiteśvara-mātṛ-dhāraṇī (the fundamental mantra of Avalokiteśvara). Excellent, excellent, you may proclaim it.' Having received the Buddha's permission, Bodhisattva Samantabhadra then spoke the Avalokiteśvara-mātṛ-dhāraṇī, saying:

爾時普賢菩薩說是陀羅尼已。白佛言世尊。若復有人至心受持。所有罪業悉皆消滅。於一切怖畏時常得擁護。若有行人慾求見我及諸成就者。當加精進心不間斷。一日三時專注持誦。至滿七日我愍是人為現本身。又復行人如是專注。心不間斷默唸一月。當得觀自在菩薩出現本身施所求愿。乃至得見無量壽佛。多聞增長證宿命智。所生之處不離佛法具大富貴。乃至獲得不退轉地。

佛說是經已。普賢菩薩摩訶薩及諸菩薩聲聞等。一切會眾聞佛所說。皆大歡喜信受奉行。

佛說觀自在菩薩母陀羅尼經

這時,普賢菩薩說完這個陀羅尼后,對佛說:『世尊,如果有人至誠懇切地受持這個陀羅尼,那麼他所有的罪業都將完全消滅,在一切恐怖畏懼的時候,常常能夠得到(佛菩薩的)擁護。如果修行人想要見到我和各位成就者,應當更加精進,心不間斷,一天三次專注地持誦。到滿七天的時候,我憐憫這個人,會顯現我的真身。而且修行人如果這樣專注,心不間斷地默唸一個月,就能夠得到觀自在菩薩(Avalokiteśvara)出現真身,並施予他所祈求的願望,乃至能夠見到無量壽佛(Amitābha)。(修行人)會增長見聞,證得宿命智,所出生的地方不會離開佛法,具備大富大貴,乃至獲得不退轉地。』

佛說完這部經后,普賢菩薩摩訶薩(Samantabhadra Bodhisattva-mahāsattva)以及各位菩薩、聲聞等一切在場的聽眾,聽了佛所說的話,都非常歡喜,相信並接受奉行。

佛說觀自在菩薩母陀羅尼經

【English Translation】 English version Oṃ (26) Jili (27) Oṃ Jili (28) Guhya (29) Sāmyo-nirdeshani (30) Nirghatamānani (31) Ārya-lakṣaṇa-pūjā (32) Sarva-vidyānām praveshayami (33) Sarva-vidyāni me suru svāhā (34).

At that time, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, having spoken this dharani, said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, if there is anyone who sincerely receives and upholds this dharani, all their karmic offenses will be completely eradicated, and they will always be protected from all fears. If a practitioner wishes to see me and all those who have attained accomplishment, they should be even more diligent, with uninterrupted mind, and recite attentively three times a day. Upon completing seven days, I will, out of compassion for this person, manifest my true form. Moreover, if a practitioner is so focused, silently reciting without interruption for one month, they will be able to receive Avalokiteśvara's manifestation of their true form and grant their requested wishes, and even be able to see Amitābha. (The practitioner) will increase their knowledge, attain the wisdom of past lives, and be born in places where they will not be separated from the Buddha's teachings, possessing great wealth and nobility, and even attain the stage of non-retrogression.'

After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva-mahāsattva, along with all the Bodhisattvas, Śrāvakas, and all the assembled listeners, hearing what the Buddha had said, were all greatly delighted, believed, accepted, and practiced it.
