【English Translation】 English version Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Nayana Tree Garden in Vaisali, together with a large assembly of great Bhikshus, twelve hundred and fifty Bhikshus, and countless Bodhisattvas. At that time, there was a son of an elder named Sudatta, who came out from the city, went to the Nayana Garden, and arrived at the place where the World Honored One was. He bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, and then stood aside, placing his palms together, and said to the Buddha: 'I have some questions I wish to ask. May the Great Sage allow me to speak, and then I will dare to present them.' The Buddha said to Sudatta: 'Ask whatever you wish. The Tathagata will explain and analyze them in detail for you.' Sudatta, seeing that the Buddha had granted permission, then said to the Buddha: 'O, Honored One among the heavens, are there Buddhas who, through their original vows of practice, have attained perfect enlightenment and are now in the world teaching the Dharma? Great Sage, I wish you would proclaim the names of these Buddhas, so that we may hear them, hold them in our minds, wear them on our heads, receive their teachings, bow our heads in reverence, proclaim their merits, and no longer encounter various calamities, nor fall into the three evil paths. By hearing the names of these Buddhas, neither humans nor non-humans can harm us. If we are in the presence of officials, by reciting the names of these Buddhas, no one can falsely accuse us or take away what is ours. Moreover, our nature will be strong, we will not be timid, we will be secure and victorious. Furthermore, if we enter battle, swords will not harm our bodies, arrows will not penetrate us, Yakshas and other ghosts, as well as the gods and dragons, will not dare to disturb us. Lions, tigers, wolves, wild beasts, and poisonous insects will not be able to harm us.' The Buddha said to Sudatta: 'Listen carefully! Think well! I will speak for you, protecting you from calamities, so that you will have no fear and will obtain peace.' Then Sudatta received the teaching and listened attentively. The Buddha said: 'To the east from here, there is a Buddha named Bhon-satya Tathagata (奉至誠如來), Satya (至真), Samyak-sambuddha (等正覺), who is now teaching the Dharma. His world is called Shravana-gati (聞跡).'

【English Translation】 English version 'Furthermore, in the east, there is a Buddha named Gudù dù sī jí yì Tathagata (meaning the Tathagata of steadfast progress and auspicious thought), the Truly Enlightened One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is now expounding the Dharma, and his world is called Mò néng dāng (meaning Unsurpassable).' 'Furthermore, in the east, beyond this Buddha-land, there is a Buddha named Guān míng gōng xūn Tathagata (meaning the Tathagata of observing light and meritorious achievements), the Truly Enlightened One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is now expounding the Dharma, and his world is called Jí ān (meaning Auspicious Peace).' 'Furthermore, in the east, beyond this Buddha-land, there is a Buddha named Cí yīng jì shǒu Tathagata (meaning the Tathagata of compassionate hero and peaceful leader), the Truly Enlightened One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is now expounding the Dharma, and his world is called Wú huì hèn (meaning Without Hatred).' 'Furthermore, in the east, beyond this Buddha-land, there is a Buddha named Zhēn xìng shàng shǒu Tathagata (meaning the Tathagata of true nature and supreme leader), the Truly Enlightened One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is now expounding the Dharma, and his world is called Qù zhàng (meaning Removing the Staff).' 'Furthermore, in the east, beyond this Buddha-land, there is a Buddha named Niàn zhòng shēng chēng shàng shǒu Tathagata (meaning the Tathagata of remembering beings and praising the supreme), the Truly Enlightened One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is now expounding the Dharma, and his world is called Chì shèng shǒu (meaning Fiery and Prosperous Leader).' 'Furthermore, in the east, there is a Buddha named Yǒng shǒu gāo chāo xū mí Tathagata (meaning the Tathagata of leaping leader and surpassing Mount Sumeru), the Truly Enlightened One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is now expounding the Dharma, and his world is called Yào hè rè shǒu (meaning Radiant and Fiery Leader).' 'Furthermore, in the east, beyond this Buddha-land, there is a Buddha named Shèng chǐ chēng shàng shǒu Tathagata (meaning the Tathagata of overcoming shame and praising the supreme), the Truly Enlightened One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is now expounding the Dharma, and his world is called Ài lè (meaning Love and Joy).' 'If there are people who hear from afar the names of these Tathagatas in the east, accept these names of the World Honored Ones, sincerely uphold them, contemplate them well, and keep them in their hearts, reciting and chanting them, even though the precepts, virtues, wisdom, and the essence of the path of all Buddhas are equal; and the adornments and purity of all Buddha-lands, their extraordinary and unique merits, are unparalleled, without dust or defilement, without the troubles of women's impurity, without the suffering of the five turbidities, the calamities of the three evil paths, and without sand, stones, thorns, or ditches.' The Buddha said, 'Excellent! If there are those who can uphold the names of these World Honored Ones, proclaim them far and wide, awaken and arise to walk in the early part of the night, praising and chanting these Buddha's names, and in the latter part of the night, arise and dwell with a focused mind, abandoning what is useless, and remembering what is to be cultivated, such practitioners will have immeasurable merit.'
【English Translation】 English version: 'Practicing diligently day by day, there will ultimately be no loss.'
The Buddha said to Shan Zuo (善作, Good Action): 'You should rejoice in this Sutra of the Eight Buddhas' Names. The Buddha teaches the sons of good families with this Dharma, keeping it in their hearts, not forgetting or abandoning it. If they diligently cultivate it in time, they will then be able to see eight thousand Buddhas.'
Upon hearing the holy teachings, Shan Zuo then offered precious flowers worth eight thousand taels of gold to the World Honored One, bowed at the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, and then retreated to sit down.
At that time, Indra (天帝釋, the ruler of the gods) was also present in the assembly. He stepped forward and said to the Buddha: 'O Great Sage! I have already received these names of the Eight Buddhas, and I will recite and keep them in my heart. O Lord of Gods, I will diligently practice and uphold the honored names of the Buddhas in these eight sacred places, contemplating and focusing on them without ceasing, regarding them with utmost respect as the supreme treasure.'
The Buddha said to Indra: 'Therefore, when the gods and Asuras (阿須倫, demigods) are fighting, if there is fear, Kujyi (拘翼, a name) should recite this sutra, and there will be no fear. Why is this so? If someone praises and extols the names of the Tathagatas (如來, Thus Come Ones) and the eight parts of the scriptures, it is proclaiming the work of fearlessness; proclaiming the names of the Tathagatas' scriptures, one will not encounter the difficulties of vexation and various diseases; if one can manifest and propagate the names of the Tathagatas and the essence of the scriptures, it is proclaiming an era of peace and abundance; if one can propagate the names of the Buddhas' scriptures, it is proclaiming peace and the removal of great calamities; if one can propagate the names of the Buddhas' scriptures, it is proclaiming the quietude of peaceful meditation; if one propagates the names of the Buddhas' scriptures, one can be free from all countless fears; if one can propagate this Sutra of the Buddhas' Names, one will have peaceful dreams and joyful awakenings, not fearing officials, fire, water, thieves, or enemies and creditors, who will naturally avoid them. Ghosts, Rakshasas (羅剎, demons), goblins, Wangliang (魍魎, mountain spirits), Bili (薜荔, a type of creeping plant, here referring to spirits), and Yan Gui (厭鬼, haunting ghosts) will not dare to approach; if one enters mountains, valleys, or desolate roads, robbers and plunderers will naturally not appear, and lions, tigers, wolves, bears, snakes, and vipers will all hide themselves. Why is this so? The virtues of the supreme Buddhas surpass Mount Sumeru (須彌, a sacred mountain in Buddhism), their wisdom surpasses the rivers and seas, their insight surpasses the void, they walk alone in the three realms, and none can compare to them, and all beings in the ten directions are saved by them.'
Having spoken thus, the Buddha, the elder Shan Zuo
