如是我聞:

一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,與大比丘僧千二百五十人俱;復有大乘眾菩薩摩訶薩十千人俱。

爾時世尊,與無量無數百千萬眾,前後圍繞,而為說法。

爾時,尊者舍利弗,于大眾中即從座起,偏袒右肩,右膝著地,向佛合掌,而白佛言:「世尊!我有疑心,今欲發問,惟愿如來憐愍眾生,為我解說。」

爾時,世尊告舍利弗言:「善男子!隨汝所問,若有疑心,吾當為汝分別解說。」

時,舍利弗蒙佛印可,許決疑網,歡喜踴躍,即白佛言:「世尊!頗有現在十方世界諸佛世尊,往昔願力常為眾生現在說法,彼諸如來所有名號,若善男子及善女人,欲得誦持此諸佛名,若讀、若聞及以書寫,緣是功德,便於阿耨多羅三藐三菩提得不退轉,無所缺減,至於無上正真之道,速得成於阿耨多羅三藐三菩提者不?」

爾時,世尊告舍利弗言:「善哉,善哉!善男子!汝所咨問真妙辯才,為于來世無量眾生廣作利益,慈悲哀愍一切天人,能問如來如斯奧義。是故,汝今諦聽諦受,善思念之,

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本 如是我聞: 一時,佛陀在舍衛國(Śrāvastī)的祇樹給孤獨園(Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma),與一千二百五十位大比丘僧人在一起;還有一萬位大乘菩薩摩訶薩(bodhisattva-mahāsattva)也在一起。 那時,世尊(Bhagavān)被無量無數的百千萬大眾前後圍繞,正在為他們說法。 這時,尊者舍利弗(Śāriputra)在大眾中從座位上站起來,袒露右肩,右膝跪地,向佛陀合掌,對佛陀說:『世尊!我心中有疑問,現在想請教,希望如來(Tathāgata)憐憫眾生,為我解說。』 那時,世尊告訴舍利弗說:『善男子!你儘管問,如果有疑問,我將為你分別解說。』 這時,舍利弗得到佛陀的允許,可以解除心中的疑惑,歡喜雀躍,就對佛陀說:『世尊!是否有現在十方世界諸佛世尊,他們過去發願,常常爲了眾生現在說法,這些如來所有的名號,如果善男子和善女人,想要誦持這些佛的名號,或者讀誦、或者聽聞以及書寫,憑藉這些功德,就能在阿耨多羅三藐三菩提(anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi,無上正等正覺)中得到不退轉,沒有任何缺失,最終達到無上正真之道,迅速成就阿耨多羅三藐三菩提嗎?』 那時,世尊告訴舍利弗說:『善哉,善哉!善男子!你所詢問的真是巧妙的辯才,爲了未來無量的眾生廣作利益,慈悲憐憫一切天人,能夠向如來詢問如此深奧的道理。因此,你現在仔細聽,仔細接受,好好思考。』

【English Translation】 English version Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Śrāvastī, together with a great assembly of twelve hundred and fifty monks; and also with ten thousand great Bodhisattvas. At that time, the World Honored One (Bhagavān), surrounded by countless hundreds of thousands of beings, was expounding the Dharma. Then, the Venerable Śāriputra, rising from his seat in the assembly, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and with palms joined, addressed the Buddha, saying: 'World Honored One! I have a doubt in my mind, and now I wish to ask. I beseech the Tathāgata to have compassion on all beings and explain it to me.' At that time, the World Honored One said to Śāriputra: 'Good man! Ask whatever you wish. If you have any doubts, I will explain them to you.' Then, Śāriputra, having received the Buddha's permission to resolve his doubts, rejoiced and said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One! Are there any Buddhas, World Honored Ones, in the ten directions of the present world, who in the past made vows to constantly teach the Dharma for the sake of beings? If good men and good women wish to recite the names of these Tathāgatas, or read, hear, or write them, will they, through these merits, attain non-retrogression in Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (supreme perfect enlightenment), without any deficiency, and quickly achieve Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, reaching the unsurpassed true path?' At that time, the World Honored One said to Śāriputra: 'Excellent, excellent! Good man! Your question is truly of wonderful eloquence, for the sake of benefiting countless beings in the future, with compassion for all gods and humans, you are able to ask the Tathāgata such profound truths. Therefore, now listen carefully, receive it carefully, and contemplate it well.'


吾當為汝分別解說。」

舍利弗言:「唯然世尊!愿樂欲聞。」

爾時,世尊告舍利弗言:「善男子!東方去此過一恒河沙世界,有一佛剎名難降伏,于彼國土有佛世尊,號善說稱功德如來、至真、等正覺,於今現在為諸大眾說微妙法。

「複次,舍利弗!從此東方過二恒河沙世界,有一佛剎名無障礙,于彼國土有佛世尊,號因陀羅相幢星王如來、至真、等正覺,於今現在亦為大眾說微妙法。

「複次,舍利弗!從此東方過三恒河沙世界,有一佛剎名曰愛樂,于彼國土有佛世尊,號普光明功德莊嚴如來、至真、等正覺,於今現在亦為大眾說微妙法。

「複次,舍利弗!從此東方過四恒河沙世界,有一佛剎名曰普入,于彼國土有佛世尊,號善鬥戰難降伏超越如來、至真、等正覺,於今現在亦為大眾說微妙法。

「複次,舍利弗!從此東方過五恒河沙世界,有一佛剎名曰凈聚,于彼國土有佛世尊,號普功德明莊嚴如來、至真、等正覺,於今現在亦為大眾說微妙法。

We are eager to hear.' At that time, the World Honored One said to Śāriputra, 'Good man! To the east from here, passing one Ganges river sand (gaṅgā-nadī-vālukā, meaning an extremely large number) world, there is a Buddha-field (buddhakṣetra, a land where a Buddha teaches) named Difficult to Subdue. In that land, there is a World Honored Buddha, named Well-Spoken Renown Merit Tathāgata (Suvākhyāta-nāma-guṇa-tathāgata), the Truthful One (Tathāgata), the Perfectly Enlightened One (Samyak-saṃbuddha), who is now present, expounding the subtle Dharma to the great assembly. 'Furthermore, Śāriputra! To the east from here, passing two Ganges river sand worlds, there is a Buddha-field named Unobstructed. In that land, there is a World Honored Buddha, named Indra Banner Star King Tathāgata (Indra-ketu-dhvaja-tārā-rāja-tathāgata), the Truthful One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is also now present, expounding the subtle Dharma to the great assembly. 'Furthermore, Śāriputra! To the east from here, passing three Ganges river sand worlds, there is a Buddha-field named Delightful. In that land, there is a World Honored Buddha, named Universal Light Merit Adornment Tathāgata (Samanta-prabhāsa-guṇa-vyūha-tathāgata), the Truthful One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is also now present, expounding the subtle Dharma to the great assembly. 'Furthermore, Śāriputra! To the east from here, passing four Ganges river sand worlds, there is a Buddha-field named Universal Entry. In that land, there is a World Honored Buddha, named Well-Fought Difficult to Subdue Transcendent Tathāgata (Sudurjaya-vikrānta-duratikrama-tathāgata), the Truthful One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is also now present, expounding the subtle Dharma to the great assembly. 'Furthermore, Śāriputra! To the east from here, passing five Ganges river sand worlds, there is a Buddha-field named Pure Gathering. In that land, there is a World Honored Buddha, named Universal Merit Light Adornment Tathāgata (Samanta-guṇa-prabhāsa-vyūha-tathāgata), the Truthful One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is also now present, expounding the subtle Dharma to the great assembly. 'Furthermore, Śāriputra! To the east from here, passing six Ganges river sand worlds, there is a Buddha-field named Non-Poison Lord. In that land, there is a World Honored Buddha, named Unobstructed Medicine Tree Merit Renown Tathāgata (Apratihata-bhaiṣajya-vṛkṣa-guṇa-nāma-tathāgata), the Truthful One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is also now present, expounding the subtle Dharma to the great assembly. 'Furthermore, Śāriputra! To the east from here, passing seven Ganges river sand worlds, there is


一佛剎名側塞香滿,于彼國土有佛世尊,號步寶蓮華如來、至真、等正覺,於今現在亦為大眾說微妙法。

「複次,舍利弗!從此東方過八恒河沙世界,有一佛剎名妙音明,于彼國土有佛世尊,號寶蓮花善住娑羅樹王如來、至真、等正覺,於今現在亦為大眾說微妙法。

「舍利弗!是等諸佛如來、至真、等正覺,如是佛剎清凈無穢,無有五濁,復無五欲,其中眾生無有諂曲虛偽之心,亦無慾行及以女人。

「複次,舍利弗!若善男子及善女人,得聞彼等諸佛世尊如是名號,既得聞已能自受持讀誦修行,復為他人宣揚顯說,彼善男子及善女人,若墮三惡道者無有是處;惟除五逆、誹謗正法及謗聖人。

「複次,舍利弗!若善男子、善女人,得聞彼等諸佛世尊如是名號,既得聞已能自受持讀誦修行,復為他人宣揚顯說,如是之人乃至菩提,于其中間生生之處常具五通,兼復逮得諸陀羅尼,六根完具無諸殘缺,常得歡喜身毛右旋。

「複次,舍利弗!若善男子及善女人,得聞彼等諸佛世尊如是名號,既得聞已能自受持讀誦修行,復為他人宣揚顯說,彼等眾生所在之處,縣官、惡賊不能得便,火不能焚、水不能漂,惡龍惡蛇不能毒害;若行若住,師子、虎狼、熊羆、豺豹,夜叉、羅剎、諸惡鬼

【English Translation】 English version: A Buddha-land is named Side-Sai-Xiang-Man. In that land, there is a World-Honored Buddha, named Bu-Bao-Lian-Hua Tathagata (Tathagata, Thus Come One), Arhat (Worthy One), Samyaksambuddha (Perfectly Enlightened One), who is now currently expounding the wonderful Dharma for the masses. 'Furthermore, Sariputra (Sariputra, one of the Buddha's ten great disciples)! Passing through eight Ganges River sands of worlds to the east from here, there is a Buddha-land named Miao-Yin-Ming. In that land, there is a World-Honored Buddha, named Bao-Lian-Hua-Shan-Zhu-Suo-Luo-Shu-Wang Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, who is now currently expounding the wonderful Dharma for the masses.' 'Sariputra! These Buddhas, Tathagatas, Arhats, Samyaksambuddhas, their Buddha-lands are pure and undefiled, without the five turbidities (referring to the turbidity of the kalpa, views, afflictions, beings, and life), and without the five desires (referring to form, sound, smell, taste, and touch). The beings within them have no flattering or deceitful hearts, nor do they have lustful conduct or women.' 'Furthermore, Sariputra! If good men and good women hear the names of these World-Honored Buddhas, and after hearing them, can uphold, recite, and practice them, and also proclaim and explain them to others, then these good men and good women will not fall into the three evil paths (referring to hell, hungry ghosts, and animals); except for those who commit the five rebellious acts (referring to killing one's father, killing one's mother, killing an Arhat, shedding the blood of a Buddha, and disrupting the harmony of the Sangha), slander the true Dharma, and slander the sages.' 'Furthermore, Sariputra! If good men and good women hear the names of these World-Honored Buddhas, and after hearing them, can uphold, recite, and practice them, and also proclaim and explain them to others, such people, until they attain Bodhi (Bodhi, enlightenment), will always possess the five supernatural powers (referring to the divine eye, divine ear, knowledge of others' minds, knowledge of past lives, and the power of spiritual travel) in each of their lives, and will also obtain various Dharanis (Dharani, mantras), their six senses (referring to eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind) will be complete and without defects, they will always feel joy, and the hair on their bodies will turn to the right.' 'Furthermore, Sariputra! If good men and good women hear the names of these World-Honored Buddhas, and after hearing them, can uphold, recite, and practice them, and also proclaim and explain them to others, then in the places where these beings are, officials and evil thieves cannot harm them, fire cannot burn them, water cannot drown them, and evil dragons and snakes cannot poison them; whether walking or dwelling, lions, tigers, bears, wolves, jackals, Yakshas (Yaksa, a type of spirit), Rakshasas (Rakshasa, a type of demon), and all kinds of evil ghosts


神、鳩槃荼等及人非人,能作驚惶無有是處,惟除宿殃。

「複次,舍利弗!若有女人,能厭其身,繫念專心,受持讀誦如是世尊諸佛名號,復為他人分別顯說,壽終之後,更復受于女人身者,無有是處。

「複次,舍利弗!若有善男子、善女人,于靜夜中能誦如是諸佛名號,是等眾生,于現世間所作功業皆速成就,日日增長,無諸障礙。」

爾時,世尊欲重明此義,而說偈言:

「若有諸眾生,  能持是佛名,  悉舍諸惡道,  速生於善處。  常在諸佛前,  恒聞說妙法,  既睹無上尊,  隨心而供養。  誦持佛名故,  超億千萬劫,  一切諸煩惱,  疾成得菩提。  若人滿七日,  能誦是佛名,  即得清凈眼,  便能見諸佛。  若有聞佛名,  即能誦持者,  隨其所生處,  常為他所敬。  相好形端正,  常生福樂家,  喜心行大舍,  聰明不放逸。  若有諸女人,  聞此佛名故,  自誦為他說,  其福不可量,  於此壽終已,  必舍女人報,  得受丈夫身,  生生常利根。  誦持佛名故,  多百億劫中,  口氣常芬馥,  恒如栴檀香。  彼等諸大仙,  如是諸名字,  若能誦持者,  細心不放逸。  

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本 神、鳩槃荼(一種惡鬼)等以及人和非人,能夠製造驚恐不安的情況是不存在的,除非是過去的業報所致。 『再者,舍利弗!如果有女人,能夠厭惡自己的女身,專心繫念,受持讀誦這些世尊諸佛的名號,並且為他人分別解說,那麼她壽命終結之後,再次投生為女人的情況是不存在的。 『再者,舍利弗!如果有善男子、善女人,在寂靜的夜晚能夠誦唸這些諸佛的名號,這些眾生在現世所做的事業都會迅速成就,日益增長,沒有任何障礙。』 當時,世尊爲了再次闡明這個道理,而說了偈語: 『如果有眾生,能夠受持這些佛的名號,都能捨棄各種惡道,迅速往生到善處。 常常在諸佛面前,恒常聽聞宣說微妙的佛法,既能見到無上的佛,也能隨心意供養。 因為誦持佛的名號,能夠超越億千萬劫,一切的煩惱,都能快速成就而證得菩提。 如果有人能滿七日,誦唸這些佛的名號,就能得到清凈的眼睛,便能見到諸佛。 如果有人聽到佛的名號,就能誦持,那麼無論他出生在何處,都會常常受到他人的尊敬。 相貌美好端正,常常出生在幸福快樂的家庭,喜歡行大布施,聰明而不放逸。 如果有女人,因為聽到這些佛的名號,自己誦唸併爲他人解說,她的福報是不可估量的。 在此世壽命終結后,必定捨棄女人的果報,得到丈夫的身體,生生世世都具有銳利的根性。 因為誦持佛的名號,在多百億劫中,口中常常散發芬芳,恒常如同栴檀的香味。 那些大仙,這些名字,如果能夠誦持,細心而不放逸。』

【English Translation】 English version Gods, Kumbhandas (a type of evil spirit), and other beings, both human and non-human, who can cause fear and panic, this is not possible, except due to past karmic retribution. 『Furthermore, Shariputra! If there is a woman who can detest her female body, focus her mind, receive, uphold, read, and recite the names of these Buddhas, the World Honored Ones, and also explain them to others, then after her life ends, there is no possibility that she will be reborn as a woman again.』 『Furthermore, Shariputra! If there are good men or good women who can recite the names of these Buddhas during quiet nights, these beings will quickly achieve all the merits they have made in this present world, and they will grow day by day without any obstacles.』 At that time, the World Honored One, wishing to further clarify this meaning, spoke these verses: 『If there are sentient beings who can uphold these names of the Buddhas, they will all abandon the evil paths and quickly be reborn in good places. They will always be in the presence of the Buddhas, constantly hearing the wonderful Dharma being preached, and having seen the Supreme One, they will be able to make offerings according to their hearts. Because of reciting and upholding the names of the Buddhas, they can transcend hundreds of millions of kalpas, and all afflictions can be quickly overcome to attain Bodhi. If a person can recite these names of the Buddhas for seven full days, they will obtain pure eyes and be able to see all the Buddhas. If someone hears the names of the Buddhas and can recite and uphold them, then wherever they are born, they will always be respected by others. Their appearance will be beautiful and upright, they will always be born into families of happiness and joy, they will enjoy giving great charity, and they will be intelligent and not negligent. If there are women who, because they have heard these names of the Buddhas, recite them themselves and explain them to others, their blessings will be immeasurable. After their lives end in this world, they will surely abandon the retribution of being a woman, obtain the body of a man, and in every life, they will have sharp faculties. Because of reciting and upholding the names of the Buddhas, for many hundreds of millions of kalpas, their breath will always be fragrant, constantly like the scent of sandalwood. Those great immortals, these names, if they can recite and uphold them, with careful attention and without negligence.』


誦持佛名故,  父母及兄弟,  並余諸眷屬,  終無異苦惱。  誦持佛名故,  一切魔波旬,  黑闇眾眷屬,  終不能障礙。  惡毒不能害,  刀杖及火等,  縣官惡賊盜,  一切不能傷。  誦持佛名故,  千億諸劫中,  常生寶蓮華,  威相神通具;  常在虛空中,  遍不思議剎,  觀諸異佛土,  剎中清凈者。  證無上道已,  普為諸雜類,  諸天及世人,  能作歸依處。」

佛說是經已,長老舍利弗及天、龍、夜叉、乾闥婆、阿修羅、迦樓羅、緊那羅、摩睺羅伽、人非人等,一切大眾,聞佛所說,歡喜奉行。

佛陀說完這部經后,長老舍利弗(佛陀十大弟子之一)以及天、龍、夜叉(守護神)、乾闥婆(天樂神)、阿修羅(非天神)、迦樓羅(金翅鳥神)、緊那羅(歌神)、摩睺羅伽(大蟒神)、人非人等,一切大眾,聽聞佛陀所說,都歡喜地接受並實行。

《八佛名號經》

【English Translation】 English version Because of reciting the Buddha's name, parents, siblings, and all other relatives will ultimately be free from various sufferings and afflictions. Because of reciting the Buddha's name, all Mara Papiyas (the demon king), and the dark retinue, will ultimately be unable to create obstacles. Poisonous harm cannot occur, nor can weapons, fire, government officials, evil thieves, or robbers; none of these can cause injury. Because of reciting the Buddha's name, for billions of kalpas, one will always be born in a precious lotus flower, possessing majestic appearances and supernatural powers. One will always be in the void, traveling throughout inconceivable Buddha lands, observing various different Buddha realms, and the pure scenes within those realms. Having attained the unsurpassed path, one will universally become a refuge for all kinds of beings, gods, and humans.

After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, the elder Shariputra (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples), as well as gods, dragons, yakshas (guardian deities), gandharvas (celestial musicians), asuras (demigods), garudas (mythical birds), kinnaras (celestial musicians), mahoragas (great serpent deities), humans, non-humans, and all the great assembly, having heard what the Buddha had said, joyfully accepted and practiced it.
