如是我聞:

一時佛在王舍城鷲峰山中,時尊者大目乾連食時欲至,著衣持缽將詣王城,忽作是念:「我於今日,先往色究竟天,問少因緣,卻來乞食。」於是尊者大目乾連,入三摩地等引,譬如力士屈伸臂頃,到色究竟天。既至彼已,與天相見,以種種軟語互相問訊。時尊者大目乾連乃問天言:「經於何時有佛世尊出現於世,證無上菩提?」於是有百色究竟天主同聲答言:「滿百千劫,有佛出世,證無上菩提。」

爾時尊者大目乾連,聞已信受,即入三摩地,譬如力士屈伸臂頃,從色究竟天還到王城,即如常日,次第乞食。食畢澡漱收衣缽已,往詣佛所。即以頭面禮佛雙足,脩敬畢已,在一面坐,合掌瞻仰,而白佛言:「世尊,我於今日食時欲至,入三摩地往色究竟天,問彼天人:『經於何時有佛出世,證無上菩提?』彼百天主同聲告我:『滿百千劫,有佛出世,證無上菩提。』世尊!我雖信受,是事云何?唯愿世尊,為我開說。」

爾時世尊告大目乾連:「汝今諦聽,當爲汝說。大目乾連!彼色究竟天主,知見甚少,

【English Translation】 English version Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Vulture Peak Mountain (Gṛdhrakūṭa) in Rājagṛha. At that time, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, as the time for his meal approached, put on his robes and, holding his bowl, prepared to go to the royal city. Suddenly, he thought: 『Today, I should first go to the Akaniṣṭha heaven, ask about some causes and conditions, and then come back to beg for food.』 Thereupon, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana entered into samādhi, and as quickly as a strong man extends or retracts his arm, he arrived at the Akaniṣṭha heaven. Having arrived there, he met with the devas, and they greeted each other with various gentle words. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana asked the devas: 『After how long will a Buddha appear in the world, attaining anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi?』 Then, a hundred Akaniṣṭha devas answered in unison: 『After a hundred thousand kalpas, a Buddha will appear in the world, attaining anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi.』 At that time, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, having heard this, accepted it with faith. He immediately entered samādhi, and as quickly as a strong man extends or retracts his arm, he returned from the Akaniṣṭha heaven to the royal city. Then, as usual, he went about begging for food in order. After eating, washing, and putting away his robes and bowl, he went to where the Buddha was. He bowed his head to the Buddha』s feet, paid his respects, and sat down to one side, with his palms joined, gazing up at the Buddha. He said to the Buddha: 『World Honored One, today, as the time for my meal approached, I entered samādhi and went to the Akaniṣṭha heaven, asking the devas there: 『After how long will a Buddha appear in the world, attaining anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi?』 Those hundred devas told me in unison: 『After a hundred thousand kalpas, a Buddha will appear in the world, attaining anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi.』 World Honored One! Although I believe and accept this, what is the truth of this matter? I beseech the World Honored One to explain it to me.』 At that time, the World Honored One said to Mahāmaudgalyāyana: 『Now listen carefully, and I will explain it to you. Mahāmaudgalyāyana! Those Akaniṣṭha devas have very little knowledge and understanding,


乃謂汝言:『滿百千劫,有佛出世,證無上菩提。』此非正言,未可深信。大目乾連!我念往昔,最初值遇六十俱胝諸佛如來出現於世,而彼諸佛,住世利生或久或近,各各隨緣次第入滅;如是相繼,復有八十俱胝佛,出現於世,同名妙華。我于如是一一佛前,發大誓願,及持梵行。於此佛后,復有五百佛出現於世,同名正梵。於此佛后,復有八百佛出現於世,同名燃燈。於此佛后,復有一萬五千佛,同名昝么沒,出現於世。於此佛后,復有一千佛出現於世,名號族姓各各不同。我于如是佛前,復發誓願,修持梵行。於此佛后,復有六千佛出現於世,同名蘇缽啰多波。於此佛后,復有九萬佛出現於世,同名妙迦葉。於此佛后,復有一千佛出現於世,同名為日。於此佛后,復有一千佛出現於世,同名染沒𠆙野。於此佛后,復有八萬佛出現於世,同名曀羅嚩帝。於此佛后,復有七萬佛出現於世,同名帝釋。於此佛后,復有一佛,名德,出現於世,我於此佛,與諸聲聞弟子,同發誓愿,恭敬供養。經于多歲,於此佛后,復有八十俱胝那由他辟支佛出現於世。

【English Translation】 English version: Someone might say to you, 『After a hundred thousand kalpas (an extremely long period of time), a Buddha will appear in the world, attaining Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (supreme enlightenment).』 This is not correct, and should not be deeply believed. Mahāmaudgalyāyana (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples)! I recall in the past, I first encountered sixty kotis (an ancient Indian unit of counting, one koti equals ten million) of Tathāgatas (Buddhas) appearing in the world. Those Buddhas lived in the world to benefit beings, some for a long time, some for a short time, each according to their conditions, entering Parinirvana (final liberation) in succession. Following this, there were another eighty kotis of Buddhas, appearing in the world, all named Wonderful Flower. Before each of these Buddhas, I made great vows and practiced pure conduct. After these Buddhas, there were five hundred Buddhas appearing in the world, all named Righteous Brahma. After these Buddhas, there were eight hundred Buddhas appearing in the world, all named Burning Lamp. After these Buddhas, there were fifteen thousand Buddhas, all named Zanmeimei (transliteration), appearing in the world. After these Buddhas, there were one thousand Buddhas appearing in the world, their names and family names each different. Before these Buddhas, I again made vows and practiced pure conduct. After these Buddhas, there were six thousand Buddhas appearing in the world, all named Supratapa (transliteration). After these Buddhas, there were ninety thousand Buddhas appearing in the world, all named Wonderful Kasyapa (transliteration). After these Buddhas, there were one thousand Buddhas appearing in the world, all named Sun. After these Buddhas, there were one thousand Buddhas appearing in the world, all named Ranmeiyeye (transliteration). After these Buddhas, there were eighty thousand Buddhas appearing in the world, all named Elavati (transliteration). After these Buddhas, there were seventy thousand Buddhas appearing in the world, all named Indra (name of a deity). After these Buddhas, there was one Buddha, named Virtue, appearing in the world. Before this Buddha, I, along with the Sravaka (hearer) disciples, made vows together, respectfully making offerings. After many years, after this Buddha, there were eighty kotis nayutas (an ancient Indian unit of counting, one nayuta equals one hundred million) of Pratyekabuddhas (also known as solitary Buddhas, those who attain enlightenment on their own without relying on a Buddha's teachings) appearing in the world. Mahāmaudgalyāyana! Those Pratyekabuddhas made great vows before me, and there was also a Chakravartin (ideal universal ruler) named Universal Illumination, who also before me, first encountered forty Buddhas all named Invincible. Mahāmaudgalyāyana! After the Parinirvana of the Buddha Virtue, I encountered a Buddha, also named Invincible.


。於此佛世,我為轉輪聖王名為百號,與無能勝佛聲聞弟子同發誓愿,恭敬供養。經歷多年,佛入滅后,我以七寶建塔,供養舍利。如是修行,經無量時。大目乾連!我於是時,得證菩提。」

「複次,大目乾連!彼色究竟天,少知少見。無能勝佛滅度之後,復有一佛出現於世,名曰持世。后復有佛出現於世,名曰持地。后復有佛,名大能仁,出現於世。后復有佛,名曰妙現,出興於世。后復有佛,名曰師子,出現於世。后復有佛,名最上希有,出現於世。后復有佛,名斷一切憂,出現於世。后復有佛,名一切義成就,出現於世。后復有佛,名曰得勝,出現於世。后復有佛,名曰寶光,出現於世。后復有佛,名曰意稱,出現於世。后復有佛,名烏波底室啰,出現於世。后復有佛,名底室嚕,出現於世。后復有佛,名曰圓光,出現於世。后復有佛,名為月光,出現於世。后復有佛,名曰天光,出現於世。后復有佛,名阿提部,出現於世。后復有佛,名阿提野輸,出現於世。后復有佛,名無滅通,出現於世。后復有佛,名曰最勝,出現於世。后復有佛,名底室嚕多嚕,出現於世。后復有佛,名曰上華,出現於世。后復有佛,名阿哩瑟吒,出現於世。后復有佛,名阿提部,出現於世。后復有佛,名曰燃燈,出現於世。

After many years, when the Buddha entered Parinirvana, I built a stupa with seven treasures to enshrine the relics. Practicing in this way, I passed through immeasurable time. Mahamudgalyayana (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples)! It was then that I attained Bodhi (enlightenment).' 'Furthermore, Mahamudgalyayana! The beings in the Akanistha heaven (highest heaven in the realm of form) have limited knowledge and vision. After the Parinirvana of the Buddha Anabhijna, another Buddha appeared in the world, named Dharani (Buddha's name). After that, another Buddha appeared in the world, named Dharadhara (Buddha's name). After that, another Buddha, named Mahavira (Buddha's name), appeared in the world. After that, another Buddha, named Subhadra (Buddha's name), appeared in the world. After that, another Buddha, named Simha (Buddha's name), appeared in the world. After that, another Buddha, named Uttamaadbhuta (Buddha's name), appeared in the world. 「大目乾連!彼一一佛,從初發心乃至成等正覺,皆是經歷無數之劫。我從發心至今成佛,劫數甚多,不可算計。彼色究竟天,少知少見;汝勿生疑。」

爾時,世尊說是經已。大目乾連疑心即除,歡喜踴躍,禮佛而退。

【English Translation】 English version: After that, there was another Buddha named Jiangyuan (meaning 'Subduing Injustice'), who appeared in the world. After that, there was another Buddha named Jinyao (meaning 'Golden Radiance'), who appeared in the world. After that, there was another Buddha named Jinguang (meaning 'Golden Light'), who appeared in the world. After that, there was another Buddha named Baoyan (meaning 'Precious Eye'), who appeared in the world. After that, there was another Buddha named Lianhuayan (meaning 'Lotus Eye'), who appeared in the world. After that, there was another Buddha named Zuishanglianhua (meaning 'Supreme Lotus'), who appeared in the world. After that, there was another Buddha named Dalianhua (meaning 'Great Lotus'), who appeared in the world. After that, there was another Buddha named Lianhua (meaning 'Lotus'), who appeared in the world. After that, there was another Buddha named Vipashyi (one of the past seven Buddhas), who appeared in the world. Each of those Buddhas, from the initial arising of their aspiration to the attainment of perfect enlightenment, all went through countless kalpas. From the arising of my aspiration to my attainment of Buddhahood, the number of kalpas is very many, uncountable. The Akanistha Heaven (the highest heaven in the Form Realm of the Buddhist cosmology) has limited knowledge and vision; do not have doubts.' At that time, after the World Honored One finished speaking this sutra. Mahamogallana's doubts were immediately dispelled, and he rejoiced and leaped with joy, bowed to the Buddha, and withdrew.
