【English Translation】 English version At that time, Shakyamuni Buddha told the assembly, 'In the past, countless kalpas ago, during the Dharma-ending age of the Buddha Myo-ko (Buddha of the past), I left home to practice the Way. I heard the names of these fifty-three Buddhas. Upon hearing them, I joined my palms and felt joy in my heart. I then taught others, enabling them to hear and uphold these names. Those who heard them taught others in turn, until there were three thousand people. These three thousand people, with one voice, recited the names of the Buddhas and respectfully paid homage with one mind. Because of the merit and power of paying homage to the Buddhas in this way, they were able to transcend the sins of countless kalpas of birth and death. The first thousand people, led by Buddha Hua-guang (Buddha of the past), down to Buddha Vipashyin (Buddha of the past), attained Buddhahood in the Adornment Kalpa (a past great kalpa); these are the past thousand Buddhas. The middle thousand people, led by Buddha Krakucchanda (Buddha of the past), down to Buddha Kanakamuni (Buddha of the past), will successively attain Buddhahood in the Worthy Kalpa (the present great kalpa). The last thousand people, led by Buddha Sunlight (Buddha of the future), down to Buddha Sumeru-appearance (Buddha of the future), will attain Buddhahood in the Constellation Kalpa (a future great kalpa).' The Buddha told Baoji (a Bodhisattva), 'The Buddhas of the present in the ten directions, such as the Tathagata Good Virtue, also attained Buddhahood in their respective directions because they had heard the names of these fifty-three Buddhas. If there are sentient beings who wish to eradicate the four grave offenses (killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, and lying), who wish to repent of the five rebellious acts and ten evils, who wish to eradicate the extremely grave sin of groundless slander of the Dharma, they should diligently pay homage to the names of the fifty-three Buddhas:' 'Namo Buddha Universal Light, Namo Buddha Universal Brightness, Namo Buddha Universal Purity, Namo Buddha Tamalapatra Sandalwood Fragrance, Namo Buddha Sandalwood Light, Namo Buddha Mani Banner, Namo Buddha Joyful Treasury Mani Jewel Accumulation, Namo Buddha All Worldly Beings Delight to See Supreme Great Diligence, Namo Buddha Mani Banner Lamp Light, Namo Buddha Wisdom Torch Illumination, Namo Buddha Ocean Virtue Brightness, Namo Buddha Vajra Firm Universal Scattering Golden Light, Namo Buddha Great Strong Diligence Courageous.'

Disciples, because of the darkness of ordinary knowledge, are unaware and unknowing, today they reveal and repent of all of it. Furthermore, disciples, from beginningless time until today, either with whips and staffs, shackles and chains, wooden yokes and instruments of torture, pressing and pulling, torturing and plundering, beating and throwing, kicking with hands and feet, binding and caging, cutting off water and food, such various evil means, causing suffering and distress to sentient beings, today with utmost sincerity, towards the Buddhas of the ten directions, the Venerable Dharma, and the Holy Assembly, all repent. May the disciples, by the merit arising from this repentance of the sins of killing and harming, in life after life, obtain a vajra body (indestructible body), with limitless lifespan, forever free from resentment and hatred, without thoughts of killing. Towards all sentient beings, may they attain the heart of treating them as their only child, if they see those in danger, in urgent distress, not sparing their own lives, using expedient means to rescue and liberate them, and then expound the subtle and correct Dharma for them, so that all sentient beings, seeing their form and shadow, may all attain peace and happiness, hearing their name and voice, all fear may be eliminated, and each may bow once in reverence. Disciples, from beginningless time until today, either stealing others' treasures, using weapons to forcibly plunder, or relying on their own power to coerce and take, or relying on the authority of the government, or borrowing power, using high and large instruments of torture to unjustly imprison good people, swallowing fraudulent goods, judging the upright as crooked, because of these causes, their bodies are caught in the net of the law. Or appointing evil officials, encroaching on others' property, harming the public for private gain, harming the private for public gain, harming others to enrich oneself, agreeing in words but being stingy in heart. Or stealing and concealing rent and assessments, smuggling through customs, hiding public taxes, concealing those who should be serving. Such sins, now all are repented. Or taking the property of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha without permission, or the property of scriptures and images, or the property for repairing pagodas and temples, or the property for supporting the resident Sangha, or the property intended for the Sangha, or stealing and misusing, relying on power and not returning, or borrowing oneself or lending to others, or forgetting about loans and exchanges, or mixing and using the property of the Three Jewels indiscriminately, or using the public property of grains, firewood, salt, and fermented beans, etc.

【English Translation】 English version Buddha, Namo Miaojian Buddha (Homage to Miaojian Buddha). Nine hundred Buddhas (of the past). Having paid homage to the Three Jewels, I now repent again. 'Having repented for the retribution of hell, I shall now repent again for the retribution of the three evil paths. In the scriptures, the Buddha said: 『Those with many desires, because they seek profit, also have much suffering. Those who are content, even if they sleep on the ground, still find it joyful; those who are not content, even if they are in heaven, are still not satisfied.』 But people in the world, when suddenly faced with hardship, can give up their wealth without counting how much; yet they do not know that this body is on the brink of the deep pit of the three evil paths, and once breath ceases, they will fall. If a wise friend helps to build merit and virtue, enabling them to cultivate the resources for future good deeds, they cling to their stingy hearts and refuse to do it. Such people are extremely foolish and deluded. Why is this so? In the scriptures, the Buddha said: 『When born, one does not bring a single coin, and when dead, one does not take a single coin away. The wealth accumulated through hardship only brings worry and distress, is of no benefit to oneself, and is merely for others. Without good deeds to rely on, without virtue to protect, one will fall into various evil paths at the end of life.』 Therefore, disciples, today we bow our heads and sincerely take refuge in the Buddha.' 'Disciples, today we repent again for the retribution of ignorance in the animal realm. We repent for the retribution of carrying heavy loads and pulling plows in the animal realm, repaying past debts. We repent for the retribution of not being free in the animal realm, being chopped, stabbed, and slaughtered by others. We repent for the retribution of animals being without feet, with two feet, four feet, or many feet. We repent for the retribution of animals in the animal realm, whose bodies, fur, feathers, scales, and shells are eaten by various small insects. Like this, there are countless retributions in the animal realm, and today, with utmost sincerity, we repent for them all.' 'We repent again for the retribution of long-term hunger in the hungry ghost realm. We repent for the retribution of hungry ghosts, who for hundreds of millions of years, have never heard the name of water. We repent for the retribution of hungry ghosts eating pus, blood, and filthy excrement. We repent for the retribution of hungry ghosts, whose limbs are all ablaze when they move. We repent for the retribution of hungry ghosts, with large bellies and small throats.'

【English Translation】 English version: Retribution for sins. Thus, in the realm of hungry ghosts, there are immeasurable sufferings. Today, we bow our heads and repent for all of them. Furthermore, we repent for the retributions of deceit and flattery in the realms of all ghosts, gods, and asuras. We repent for the retributions of carrying sand and stones, filling rivers and seas in the realm of ghosts and gods. We repent for the retributions of Rakshasas (demons), Kumbhandas (a type of demon), and all evil ghosts and gods, who devour flesh and blood, suffering from ugly retributions. Thus, in the realm of ghosts and gods, there are immeasurable and boundless retributions. Today, we bow our heads, and towards the Buddhas of the ten directions and the Bodhisattvas of the great earth, we beg for mercy and repent, wishing all these retributions to be extinguished. May we, the disciples, through the merits generated from repenting for the retributions of animals, in every life, eliminate the defilement of ignorance, understand the causes and conditions of karma, have bright wisdom, and cut off the body of the evil paths. May we, through the merits generated from repenting for the retributions of hungry ghosts, in every life, forever be free from the suffering of stinginess, greed, and hunger, and always partake of the taste of nectar and liberation. May we, through the merits generated from repenting for the retributions of ghosts, gods, and asuras, in every life, be upright and without flattery, be free from the causes of wrong livelihood, eliminate the ugly consequences, and bring blessings to humans and gods. May we, the disciples, from now on, until we reach the Bodhi-mandala, be determined not to receive the retributions of the four evil paths, except for the sake of great compassion, for the sake of saving sentient beings, using the power of vows, to dwell in them without weariness.
