【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of the Names of the Thousand Buddhas of the Present Auspicious Kalpa (also known as 'The Mountain of Great Merits of All Buddhas')

The translator's name is missing; now attached to the Liang Record.

At that time, Bodhisattva King Joy said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One! In this assembly, are there any Bodhisattva Mahasattvas (great Bodhisattvas) who have attained this samadhi (meditative absorption), and who can also enter the eighty-four thousand paramita (perfections) doors, as well as the various samadhi doors and dharani (mantra) doors?'

The Buddha told King Joy: 'In this assembly, there are Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who have attained this samadhi, and who can also enter the eighty-four thousand paramitas, as well as the various samadhi and dharani doors. These Bodhisattvas, in this Auspicious Kalpa, will all attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (unexcelled perfect enlightenment), except for the four Tathagatas who have already attained Buddhahood in this kalpa.'

Bodhisattva King Joy again said to the Buddha: 'May you have compassion and proclaim the names of these Bodhisattvas, to greatly benefit beings, to bring peace to the world, to benefit gods and humans, to protect the Dharma, to make it abide long, to protect future Bodhisattvas, to reveal the light of the Dharma, and to make their minds seeking the unsurpassed path not weary.'

The Buddha told King Joy: 'Now listen carefully, contemplate well, and I will proclaim it for you.'

'Yes, World Honored One, I am very eager to hear.'

At that time, the World Honored One then spoke the names of the Buddhas in verses, with Krakucchanda Buddha (one of the past seven Buddhas) as the leader of the thousand Buddhas:

Homage to Krakucchanda Buddha, Homage to Kanakamuni Buddha (one of the past seven Buddhas), Homage to Kasyapa Buddha (one of the past seven Buddhas), Homage to Sakyamuni Buddha, Homage to Maitreya Buddha (the future Buddha), Homage to Lion Buddha, Homage to Bright Flame Buddha, Homage to Muni Buddha, Homage to Wonderful Flower Buddha, Homage to Flower Clan Buddha, Homage to Good Dwelling Buddha, Homage to Guide Buddha, Homage to Great Arm Buddha, Homage to Great Strength Buddha, Homage to Star King Buddha, Homage to Medicine Cultivation Buddha, Homage to Name and Form Buddha, Homage to Great Light Buddha, Homage to Flame Shoulder Buddha,

【English Translation】 English version Without virtue, I pay homage to the Buddha. From the aforementioned one hundred Buddhas, I take refuge and repent. I take refuge and repent to all Buddhas of the past, present, and future, in the ten directions and three times, throughout the entire space: 『With utmost sincerity, I repent! Disciples, from countless kalpas until today, during this time, we have created various karmas. Karma adorns the realms of existence, in every place, therefore we contemplate, seeking liberation from the world. Thus, the karmic retributions of the six realms are all different, with varying forms and kinds, and it should be known that all of this is caused by the power of karma. Therefore, among the ten powers of the Buddha, the power of karma is the most profound. Ordinary people often have doubts about this: 『Why is it so?』 Now we see in the world that those who do good encounter hardships everywhere; those who do evil have things go smoothly, and they say: 『There is no distinction between good and evil in the world.』 Those who think this way are unable to deeply understand the principle of karma. Why is this so? The sutras say: 『There are three kinds of karma. What are the three? First, present retribution; second, future retribution; third, subsequent retribution. Present retribution karma is when one does good or evil in the present, and receives retribution in the present life; future retribution karma is when one does good or evil in this life, and receives retribution in the next life; subsequent retribution karma is when one does good or evil in countless past lives, and receives retribution either in this life or in a future life.』 Those who did evil before, now seeing them doing well, this is because the good karma of their past lives and subsequent lives has matured, so they now have this happy result; how could it be that they are getting good retribution from doing evil now? Those who do good, now seeing them suffering, this is because the evil karma of their past lives and subsequent lives has matured, and their present roots of goodness are weak and unable to dispel it, so they receive this suffering retribution; how could it be that they are getting evil retribution from doing good now? How do we know this is so? Now we see in the world that those who do good are praised and respected by people, so we know that in the future they will surely receive happy retribution. Since there was such evil karma in the past, therefore the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas teach us to be close to good friends and practice together.

I take refuge in and repent to all Buddhas of the past, present, and future, in the ten directions and three periods of time, throughout the entire space of the universe: With utmost sincerity, I repent! Disciples, from beginningless time until today, the accumulated evil deeds are like the sands of the Ganges River, the sins committed fill the heavens and the earth. We have abandoned this body and received another, without awareness or knowledge. We have committed the five heinous offenses, deeply entangled in defilements, leading to the uninterrupted hell; or we have become icchantikas (those who have severed their roots of goodness), severing the roots of goodness; we have belittled the Buddha's words, slandered the Vaipulya sutras; we have destroyed the Three Jewels, ruined the true Dharma; we have not believed in karmic retribution, committing the ten evil deeds; we have been deluded by falsehood, turning away from the truth, in ignorance and confusion; we have been unfilial to our parents, rebellious; we have disrespected teachers and elders, lacking in reverence; we have been untrustworthy and unjust to friends; or we have committed the four, six, or eight heavy offenses that obstruct the path to enlightenment; we have broken the five precepts, violated the eight precepts; we have committed many transgressions of the five categories and seven groups of offenses; we have committed light and heavy defilements of the Upasaka precepts; or we have not been able to keep the Bodhisattva precepts purely, not practicing as taught, in both preliminary and subsequent practices, defiling the pure Brahma conduct; we have not observed the six fast days each month, being negligent; we have not regularly practiced the three long fasts each year, being unvigilant; we have not followed the three thousand rules of conduct, being improper; we have not followed the eighty thousand rules of discipline, being subtle

【English Translation】 English version: Committing minor offenses; not cultivating self-discipline and precepts, leading to the decline of mind and wisdom; engaging in sixteen kinds of evil actions, violating the precepts; not helping others out of difficulties, not providing aid and protection; harboring jealousy in the heart, lacking the desire to liberate beings; treating those who are hated and loved unequally; indulging in the five desires, without a sense of detachment; or because of clothing, food, gardens, ponds, etc., giving rise to unrestrained behavior; or because of youth and vigor, indulging in lust, creating various offenses; or even if it is a good deed, because of attachment to the cycle of the three realms, it hinders the practice of transcending the world. Such offenses, immeasurable and boundless, I now reveal them all, and repent to all the Buddhas of the ten directions, the venerable Dharma, and the Sangha of sages. May the disciples, by virtue of the merits and virtues arising from this repentance of uninterrupted offenses, in life after life, extinguish the five heinous crimes, eliminate the delusion of the Icchantikas (those who have severed their roots of goodness), and such light and heavy offenses, from now on, until Buddhahood, vow not to commit them again. Constantly practice the pure good Dharma that transcends the world; diligently uphold the precepts, guard the demeanor, like a person crossing the sea, cherishing their life raft, placing the Six Perfections (generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, wisdom) and the Four Immeasurables (loving-kindness, compassion, joy, equanimity) at the forefront, so that the practice of precepts, concentration, and wisdom gradually increases, and quickly achieve the Tathagata's thirty-two marks, eighty minor marks, ten powers, four fearlessnesses, great compassion, three mindfulnesses, constant joy and wonderful wisdom, and attain the eight freedoms. Having completed the repentance and vows, I take refuge and bow to the Three Jewels. Homage to the Moon-Faced Buddha (Buddha whose face is as pure and majestic as the full moon), Homage to the Jewel Lamp Buddha (Buddha who illuminates beings with the light of Dharma wisdom), Homage to the Jewel Appearance Buddha (Buddha who possesses majestic and wonderful appearances), Homage to the Supreme Name Buddha (Buddha whose name is supreme), Homage to the Name-Making Buddha (Buddha who can accomplish the name), Homage to the Immeasurable Sound Buddha (Buddha whose voice is immeasurable and boundless), Homage to the Sapphire Buddha (Buddha whose body is the color of sapphire), Homage to the Lion-Bodied Buddha (Buddha whose body is as majestic as a lion), Homage to the Clear Mind Buddha (Buddha of clear wisdom), Homage to the Victorious Buddha (Buddha who can conquer all afflictions), Homage to the Meritorious Qualities Buddha (Buddha who possesses all merits), Homage to the Moon-Aspect Buddha (Buddha who is as pure as the moon), Homage to the Powerful Buddha (Buddha who possesses great power), Homage to the Boundless Practice Buddha (Buddha whose practice is boundless), Homage to the Flower-Opening Buddha (Buddha whose wisdom blossoms like a flower), Homage to the Pure Stain Buddha (Buddha who purifies all stains), Homage to the Buddha Who Sees All Meanings (Buddha who can see all truths), Homage to the Courageous Power Buddha (Buddha who possesses courageous power), Homage to the Abundant Buddha (Buddha who possesses all wealth), Homage to the Virtuous Buddha (Buddha who possesses all virtues), Homage to the Timely Buddha (Buddha who can benefit beings at any time), Homage to the Meritorious Reverence Buddha (Buddha who is revered for all merits), Homage to the Vast Mind Buddha (Buddha whose mind is vast and boundless), Homage to the Good Extinction Buddha (Buddha who has attained the extinction of Nirvana), Homage to the Wealthy Heaven Buddha (Buddha who can give wealth to beings like a god of wealth), Homage to the Pure Doubt-Cutting Buddha (Buddha who can purify and cut off all doubts), Homage to the Immeasurable Holding Buddha (Buddha who can hold immeasurable merits), Homage to the Wonderful Joy Buddha (Buddha who can give wonderful joy to beings), Homage to the Unfailing Buddha (Buddha who does not fail the expectations of beings), Homage to the Non-Abiding Buddha (Buddha who does not abide in any place), Homage to the Detachable Buddha (Buddha's name, specific meaning is unknown).

【English Translation】 English version: Repentance: 『With utmost sincerity, I repent! Disciples, we have now generally repented for all our karmic deeds. Now, we shall proceed to individually repent for each specific transgression, whether general or specific, gross or subtle, light or heavy, spoken or unspoken, all categories of actions, may they all be extinguished. In specific repentance, we first repent for the three bodily misdeeds, then the four verbal misdeeds, and then all other hindrances, bowing our heads in sequence. The three bodily misdeeds are: first, killing. As the scriptures explain, one can use oneself as an analogy: do not kill, do not use weapons. Although there is a difference between birds and beasts and humans, all cherish life and fear death; in this respect, they are the same. If we trace these beings back, from beginningless time, they may have been our parents, siblings, or close relatives, who, due to karmic causes, have been cycling through the six realms of existence, being born and dying, changing forms and retributions, no longer recognizable. Yet now, we harm them and eat their flesh, which is extremely uncompassionate. Therefore, the Buddha said: 『Even if you obtain leftover food, you should regard it as eating the flesh of your own child during a famine, how much more so when eating fish and meat?』 It is also said: 『Killing beings for profit, and using money to buy meat, both are evil deeds, and after death, one will fall into the hell of wailing.』 Thus, it is known that killing and eating meat are sins as deep as rivers and seas, and faults as heavy as mountains. However, disciples, from beginningless time, we have not encountered good teachers, and all this is due to these karmic deeds. Therefore, the scriptures say: 『The sin of killing can cause beings to fall into hell and the realm of hungry ghosts to suffer. If reborn as animals, they will take the forms of tigers, leopards, jackals, hawks, etc., or the forms of poisonous snakes and scorpions, always harboring evil intentions; or they will take the forms of deer, bears, etc., always harboring fear. If reborn as humans, they will receive two kinds of retribution: one is frequent illness, and the other is a short life.』 Killing and eating meat have such immeasurable and various evil consequences. Therefore, disciples, today with utmost sincerity, we take refuge in all the Buddhas.』 『We take refuge in Buddha of Majestic Virtue and Tranquil Extinction (Buddha with majestic virtue, who has extinguished afflictions), we take refuge in Buddha of Loving Appearance (Buddha with a loving and auspicious appearance), we take refuge in Buddha of Many Heavens (Buddha who is revered by many heavenly beings), we take refuge in Buddha of Radiant Flame (Buddha with a flame-like radiance), we take refuge in Buddha Beloved by the Heavens (Buddha who is loved by heavenly beings), we take refuge in Buddha of Precious Multitudes (Buddha with many treasures), we take refuge in Buddha of Precious Steps (Buddha whose steps create lotuses), we take refuge in Buddha of Lion's Strength (Buddha with the courage of a lion), we take refuge in Buddha of Supreme Conduct (Buddha who has attained the highest level of practice), we take refuge in Buddha King of Humans (Buddha who is the king among humans).』

【English Translation】 English version: I repent! Again, I repent of the sin of robbery. The sutra says: 'If something belongs to another, and is protected by another, regarding this thing, even a single blade of grass or a single leaf, one should not take it without being given, let alone steal it.' However, sentient beings, only seeing the present benefit, take things by various improper means, causing them to suffer such calamities in the future. Therefore, the sutra says: 'The sin of robbery can cause sentient beings to fall into hell and the realm of hungry ghosts to suffer; if reborn as an animal, they will take the forms of cows, horses, donkeys, mules, camels, etc., using their physical strength and flesh to repay their past debts; if reborn as a human, they will become slaves to others, with clothes that do not cover their bodies, food that does not sustain their lives, poor and miserable, almost losing their dignity as human beings.' These eight hundred Buddhas mentioned above are all virtuous and holy.

I take refuge in and repent before all the Buddhas of the past, present, and future in the ten directions and three periods, filling the entire space: 'With utmost sincerity, I repent! We, your disciples, from beginningless time until today, have perhaps ** maidservants, seized other people's wives and daughters, violated chaste women, defiled Bhikkhunis, destroyed others' pure practice, forced others to do immoral things, looked with impure hearts and evil eyes, and mocked and teased with words; or shamed others' families, defiled the names of virtuous people; or committed impure acts against the five kinds of men. Such sins are immeasurable and boundless, and today we sincerely repent of them all. Furthermore, from beginningless time until today, our eyes have been deluded by colors, loving and clinging to black, yellow, red, green, vermilion, and purple, as well as various precious trinkets and ornaments; or seized men and women.'

【English Translation】 English version: Regarding forms and appearances such as long and short, black and white, one gives rise to improper thoughts. The ears crave pleasant sounds, such as court music, string and wind instruments, theatrical performances, and singing, or hearing the voices, speech, cries, and laughter of men and women, giving rise to improper thoughts; or the nose covets fragrant scents, such as musk, fragrant orchids, turmeric, and storax, giving rise to improper thoughts; or the tongue craves delicious flavors, such as fresh and delicious, sweet and fatty foods, the flesh and blood of living beings, which nourish the four elements but increase the root of suffering, giving rise to improper thoughts; the body craves luxurious silks and brocades, all fine and smooth precious garments, giving rise to improper thoughts; or the mind has many chaotic thoughts, coming into contact with things that are not in accordance with the Dharma. Having these six thoughts, one creates particularly grave offenses. Such offenses are immeasurable and boundless. Today, with utmost sincerity, I repent to all Buddhas of the ten directions, the venerable Dharma, and the holy assembly. May we disciples, by the merit arising from repenting of offenses such as lust, in life after life, be born naturally, not from a womb, pure and immaculate, with beautiful features, radiant with light, the six senses open and clear, intelligent and sharp, understanding that love and affection are like shackles, observing the six sense objects as illusions, resolutely renouncing the realm of the five desires, and not even giving rise to evil thoughts in dreams, so that internal and external conditions can never move us. May the merit of repenting of the eye faculty enable these eyes to see clearly the pure Dharma body of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the ten directions, without attachment to duality. May the merit of repenting of the ear faculty enable these ears to always hear the true Dharma spoken by all Buddhas and sages in the ten directions, and to practice it as taught. May the merit of repenting of the nose faculty enable this nose to always smell the fragrance of the fragrant rice (of the Buddha-lands), entering the fragrance of the Dharma position, abandoning birth and death, and no longer having impure odors. May the merit of repenting of the tongue faculty enable this tongue to always eat the food of Dharma joy and meditative bliss, and no longer crave the taste of the flesh and blood of living beings. May the merit of repenting of the body faculty enable this body to wear the robe of the Tathagata, put on the armor of patience, lie on the fearless bed, and sit on the seat of the four dhyanas. May the merit of repenting of the mind faculty enable this mind to achieve the ten contemplations, master the five sciences (sound, craftsmanship, medicine, logic, and inner knowledge), deeply contemplate the equal truth of emptiness of the two truths (conventional and ultimate), arise from skillful wisdom to practice the ten subtle conducts, enter the stream of the Dharma, and increase in clarity moment by moment, revealing the great and boundless

We disciples, from countless kalpas until today, in this time, have followed our minds to create faults, and followed our desires to commit transgressions; these matters have deviated from the right path, and we have committed offenses wherever we have gone; we have walked on the path of the three obstacles of greed, hatred, and ignorance, and entered the forest of the eight wrong paths; we have ascended the platform of afflictions, and climbed into the hall of ignorance; thus, the pond of meditation has dried up, and we cannot draw forth the lotus of wisdom; the tree of precepts has been destroyed, and the flowers and leaves of samadhi do not grow; in our prime years, we have indulged ourselves, and created countless transgressions; ignorance has covered our hearts, and the sins we have committed are not just one; the ten evils and five rebellious acts are as numerous as dust and sand; the transgressions of our three karmas of body, speech, and mind, and the six senses of eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind, are difficult to describe. Because of these sinful obstacles, we will suffer in future lives, and the retribution will lead us to be born in hell. Therefore, the ox-headed...

【English Translation】 English version: Amidst roars, forcibly dragged to the Mountain of Knives, the prison guards frown, driving the sinners onto the Sword Tree; in a single day and night, experiencing ten thousand deaths and rebirths; flesh boiled in the cauldron of soup, bones shattered beside the copper pillars; birds with iron beaks, pecking at eyes; copper dogs with sharp teeth, tearing at bodies and heads; the pain of freezing ice and the scorching of charcoal, boiling, roasting, and branding; pounded by pestles, ground by millstones, plowed by plows, and sawn apart, such suffering is immeasurable and boundless, impossible to fully recount, impossible to fully describe. Disciples, now before the Buddhas, Dharma, and Sangha of the ten directions, we confess all our transgressions. We sincerely repent for the sins we have committed, and hope that they will be eliminated through repentance; for the sins we have not yet committed, from now on, we will reform and never dare to commit them again. Having completed repentance and vows, we take refuge and pay homage to the Three Jewels. In this Bhadrakalpa (Auspicious Aeon), the Buddhas appear in the world, their names are as follows. If one hears the names of these thousand Buddhas, without fear of error, one will surely attain Nirvana. All wise people who hear the names of the Buddhas should be single-minded, not be lax or indulgent, and diligently strive forward. If one loses this opportunity, one will fall back into the evil realms, suffering all kinds of pain. Abiding in keeping the precepts, following the path of learning, always delighting in seclusion, possessing deep patience, such a person will be able to encounter the thousand Buddhas. If one recites the names of these thousand Buddhas, one will eliminate the sins accumulated over countless asamkhya kalpas (incalculable eons), and will surely attain the samadhi (meditative absorption) and supernatural powers of the Buddhas, unobstructed wisdom, as well as various Dharma gates, various dharanis (mantras), all the wisdom of the scriptures, and the ability to preach according to the circumstances, all of which should be sought from this samadhi, and one should cultivate this samadhi. One should live a pure life, not engage in deception, stay away from fame and profit, not harbor jealousy, and practice the six harmonies. Those who practice in this way will quickly attain the Dharma of samadhi. The Sutra of the Names of the Thousand Buddhas of the Present Bhadrakalpa
