如是我聞:

一時佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。爾時世尊于初夜分舉身放光,其光金色,繞祇陀園周遍七匝,照須達舍亦作金色,有金色光猶如段云,遍舍衛國處處皆雨金色蓮花;其光明中,有無量百千諸大化佛,皆唱是言:「今於此中有千菩薩,最初成佛名拘留孫,最後成佛名曰樓至。」說是語已,尊者阿若憍陳如即從禪起,與其眷屬二百五十人俱;尊者摩訶迦葉,與其眷屬二百五十人俱;尊者大目犍連,與其眷屬二百五十人俱;尊者舍利弗,與其眷屬二百五十人俱;摩訶波阇波提比丘尼,與其眷屬千比丘尼俱;須達長者與三千優婆塞俱,毗舍佉母與二千優婆夷俱;復有菩薩摩訶薩,名跋陀婆羅,與其眷屬十六菩薩俱;文殊師利法王子,與其眷屬五百菩薩俱;天、龍、夜叉、乾闥婆等一切大眾,睹佛光明皆悉雲集。

爾時,世尊出廣長舌相放千光明,一一光明各有千色,一一色中有無量化佛,是諸化佛異口同音,皆說清凈諸大菩薩甚深不可思議諸陀羅尼法,所謂阿難陀目佉陀羅尼、空慧陀羅尼、無礙性陀羅尼、大解脫無相陀羅尼。

【English Translation】 English version: Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Garden in Sravasti. At that time, the World Honored One, in the first watch of the night, emitted light from his entire body. The light was golden, and it circled the Jeta Grove seven times, illuminating Sudatta's residence, which also turned golden. The golden light was like layers of clouds, spreading throughout Sravasti, and golden lotus flowers rained down everywhere. Within the light, there were countless hundreds of thousands of great transformation Buddhas, all chanting, 'Here now are a thousand Bodhisattvas. The first to become a Buddha is named Kakusandha, and the last to become a Buddha is named Krakucchanda.' After these words were spoken, the Venerable Ajnatakaundinya immediately arose from meditation, along with his retinue of two hundred and fifty people; the Venerable Mahakasyapa, along with his retinue of two hundred and fifty people; the Venerable Maudgalyayana, along with his retinue of two hundred and fifty people; the Venerable Sariputra, along with his retinue of two hundred and fifty people; Mahaprajapati Bhikshuni, along with her retinue of one thousand Bhikshunis; the Elder Sudatta, along with three thousand Upasakas; Mother Visakha, along with two thousand Upasikas; there was also a Bodhisattva-mahasattva named Bhadrapara, along with his retinue of sixteen Bodhisattvas; Manjusri, the Dharma Prince, along with his retinue of five hundred Bodhisattvas; and all the great assemblies of Devas, Nagas, Yakshas, Gandharvas, and others, seeing the Buddha's light, all gathered together. At that time, the World Honored One extended his broad and long tongue, emitting a thousand rays of light. Each ray of light had a thousand colors, and within each color were countless transformation Buddhas. These transformation Buddhas, with one voice, all proclaimed the profound and inconceivable Dharani teachings of the pure great Bodhisattvas, namely the Ananda-mukha-dharani, the Sunyata-jnana-dharani, the Apratihata-svabhava-dharani, and the Mahavimoksa-animitta-dharani.


爾時世尊以一音聲,說百億陀羅尼門。說此陀羅尼已,爾時會中有一菩薩名曰彌勒,聞佛所說,應時即得百萬億陀羅尼門,即從座起整衣服,叉手合掌住立佛前。

爾時優波離亦從座起,頭面作禮而白佛言:「世尊!世尊往昔于毗尼中及諸經藏說阿逸多次當作佛,此阿逸多具凡夫身,未斷諸漏,此人命終當生何處?其人今者雖復出家,不修禪定不斷煩惱,佛記此人成佛無疑,此人命終生何國土?」

佛告優波離:「諦聽諦聽,善思念之。如來、應、正遍知,今於此眾說彌勒菩薩摩訶薩阿耨多羅三藐三菩提記。此人從今十二年後命終,必得往生兜率陀天上。爾時兜率陀天上,有五百萬億天子,一一天子皆修甚深檀波羅蜜,為供養一生補處菩薩故,以天福力造作宮殿,各各脫身栴檀摩尼寶冠,長跪合掌發是愿言:『我今持此無價寶珠及以天冠,為供養大心眾生故,此人來世不久當成阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,我于彼佛莊嚴國界得受記者,令我寶冠化成供具。』如是諸天子等各各長跪,發弘誓願亦復如是。

After speaking these Dharanis, at that assembly, there was a Bodhisattva named Maitreya (the future Buddha), who, upon hearing what the Buddha had said, immediately attained a hundred million billion Dharani gates. He then rose from his seat, adjusted his robes, and with his hands folded in reverence, stood before the Buddha. At that time, Upali (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, foremost in upholding the precepts) also rose from his seat, bowed his head to the ground in reverence, and said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One! In the past, in the Vinaya (monastic code) and various Sutras, you have said that Ajita (another name for Maitreya Bodhisattva) will become a Buddha in the future. This Ajita has the body of an ordinary being, and has not yet severed all defilements. Where will this person be reborn after death? Although this person has now left home, he does not practice meditation, nor does he eliminate afflictions. Yet, the Buddha has predicted that this person will undoubtedly become a Buddha. To which land will this person be reborn after death?' The Buddha said to Upali: 'Listen carefully, listen carefully, and contemplate well. The Tathagata (one of the Buddha's ten titles), Arhat (worthy of offerings), Samyaksambuddha (perfectly enlightened one), now in this assembly, will declare the prediction of Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (supreme perfect enlightenment) for the Bodhisattva Mahasattva (great Bodhisattva) Maitreya. This person, twelve years from now, upon death, will surely be reborn in the Tushita (the fourth heaven of the desire realm) Heaven. At that time, in the Tushita Heaven, there will be five million billion heavenly beings. Each heavenly being will cultivate the profound Dana Paramita (perfection of giving), and for the sake of making offerings to the Bodhisattva who is one birth away from Buddhahood, they will use their heavenly blessings to create palaces. Each will remove their sandalwood (a type of fragrant wood) mani (jewel) crown, kneel with hands folded, and make this vow: 『I now hold this priceless jewel and heavenly crown, for the sake of making offerings to this great-hearted being. This person will soon attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi in the future. When I receive the prediction in that Buddha's adorned land, may my crown transform into offerings.』 In this way, all the heavenly beings will kneel and make such great vows. 『At that time, after the heavenly beings made these vows, these crowns transformed into five million billion jeweled palaces. Each palace had seven layers of walls, each wall made of seven treasures. Each treasure emitted five hundred billion rays of light, and each ray of light contained five hundred billion lotuses. Each lotus transformed into five hundred billion rows of jeweled trees, and each leaf of the tree had five hundred billion jeweled colors, and each jeweled color』


色有五百億閻浮檀金光,一一閻浮檀金光中出五百億諸天寶女,一一寶女住立樹下,執百億寶無數瓔珞,出妙音樂,時樂音中演說不退轉地法輪之行。其樹生果如頗梨色,一切眾色入頗梨色中,是諸光明右旋婉轉流出眾音,眾音演說大慈大悲法。一一垣墻高六十二由旬、厚十四由旬,五百億龍王圍繞此垣,一一龍王雨五百億七寶行樹,莊嚴垣上,自然有風吹動此樹,樹相掁觸,演說苦、空、無常、無我、諸波羅蜜。

「爾時此宮有一大神,名牢度跋提,即從座起遍禮十方佛,發弘誓願:『若我福德應為彌勒菩薩造善法堂,令我額上自然出珠。』既發願已,額上自然出五百億寶珠,琉璃頗梨一切眾色無不具足,如紫紺摩尼表裡映徹。此摩尼光迴旋空中,化為四十九重微妙寶宮,一一欄楯萬億梵摩尼寶所共合成。諸欄楯間自然化生九億天子五百億天女,一一天子手中化生無量億萬七寶蓮華,一一蓮華上有無量億光,其光明中具諸樂器,如是天樂不鼓自鳴,此聲出時,諸女自然執眾樂器,競起歌舞;所詠歌音演說十善、四弘誓願,諸天聞者皆發無上道心。

「時諸園中有八色琉璃渠,一一渠有五百億寶珠而用合成,一一渠中有八味水,八色具足。其水上涌游樑棟間,於四門外化生四花,水出華中如寶花流。一一

'At that time, in this palace, there was a great deity named Loka-pratibha (a Bodhisattva), who immediately rose from his seat, bowed to the Buddhas of the ten directions, and made a grand vow: 『If my merit should be used to build a good Dharma hall for Maitreya Bodhisattva, may a jewel naturally appear on my forehead.』 After making this vow, five hundred billion jewels naturally appeared on his forehead, with all colors such as lapis lazuli and crystal, as clear and transparent as a purple sapphire. The light of these mani jewels swirled in the air, transforming into forty-nine layers of exquisite jewel palaces, each railing composed of trillions of Brahma mani jewels (a type of jewel). Between the railings, nine hundred million celestial sons and five hundred billion celestial maidens naturally appeared. Each celestial son held countless billions of seven-jeweled lotuses, and each lotus had countless billions of lights. Within the lights were various musical instruments. Such celestial music played itself without being struck. When this sound was emitted, the maidens naturally picked up various musical instruments and began to sing and dance; the songs they sang expounded the ten virtues and the four great vows, and those who heard these songs all aroused the supreme Bodhi mind.'

'At that time, in each garden, there were eight-colored lapis lazuli canals, each canal composed of five hundred billion jewels. Each canal contained water with eight flavors and eight colors. The water surged upwards, flowing between the beams and pillars, and outside the four gates, it transformed into four types of flowers. The water flowed out from the flowers like flowing jewel flowers.'

華上有二十四天女,身色微妙如諸菩薩莊嚴身相,手中自然化五百億寶器,一一器中天諸甘露自然盈滿,左肩荷佩無量瓔珞,右肩復負無量樂器,如雲住空從水而出,讚歎菩薩六波羅蜜;若有往生兜率天上,自然得此天女侍御。亦有七寶大師子座,高四由旬,閻浮檀金、無量眾寶以為莊嚴,座四角頭生四蓮華,一一蓮華百寶所成,一一寶出百億光明,其光微妙化為五百億眾寶雜花莊嚴寶帳。

「時十方面百千梵王,各各持一梵天妙寶,以為寶鈴懸寶帳上。時小梵王持天眾寶,以為羅網彌覆帳上。爾時百千無數天子天女眷屬,各持寶華以布座上,是諸蓮花自然皆出五百億寶女,手執白拂侍立帳內。

「持宮四角有四寶柱,一一寶柱有百千樓閣,梵摩尼珠以為絞絡。時諸閣間有百千天女,色妙無比手執樂器,其樂音中演說苦、空、無常、無我、諸波羅蜜;如是天宮有百億萬無量寶色,一一諸女亦同寶色。

「爾時十方無量諸天命終,皆愿往生兜率天宮。

「時兜率天宮有五大神:

「第一大神名曰寶幢,身雨七寶散宮墻內,一一寶珠化成無量樂器,懸處空中不鼓自鳴,有無量音適眾生意。第二大神名曰花德,身雨眾花彌覆宮墻化成花蓋,一一花蓋百千幢幡以為導引。第三大神名曰香音,身

【English Translation】 English version In Tushita (a heavenly realm), there are twenty-four celestial maidens, whose forms and colors are exquisitely subtle, resembling the adorned appearances of Bodhisattvas. In their hands, five hundred billion precious vessels naturally manifest, each filled with heavenly nectar. They wear countless necklaces on their left shoulders and carry countless musical instruments on their right shoulders, rising from the water like clouds, praising the six Paramitas (perfections) of Bodhisattvas. If one is reborn in Tushita Heaven, they will naturally be attended by these celestial maidens. There is also a great lion throne made of seven treasures (gold, silver, lapis lazuli, conch shell, agate, pearl, and amber), four yojanas (an ancient Indian unit of distance, approximately 56 kilometers) high, adorned with Jambudvipa gold (a type of gold) and countless treasures. At each of the four corners of the throne, a lotus flower grows, each made of a hundred treasures, and each treasure emits a hundred billion rays of light. These subtle lights transform into five hundred billion varieties of precious mixed flowers, adorning the precious canopy. At that time, hundreds of thousands of Brahma Kings (rulers of the Form Realm) from the ten directions (east, south, west, north, southeast, southwest, northeast, northwest, above, and below), each holding a wonderful treasure of the Brahma Heaven (Form Realm), hang them as precious bells on the precious canopy. At that time, when countless beings in the heavens from the ten directions reach the end of their lives, they all aspire to be reborn in Tushita Heaven. In Tushita Heaven, there are five great deities: The first great deity is named Bao Chuang (Treasure Banner), who rains down seven treasures (gold, silver, lapis lazuli, conch shell, agate, pearl, and amber) within the palace walls. Each precious pearl transforms into countless musical instruments, hanging in the air, playing without being struck, emitting countless sounds that please all beings. The third great deity is named Xiang Yin (Fragrant Sound), who emits fragrance from his body, pervading the palace, and this fragrance brings joy to all who smell it.

佛告優波離:「若有比丘及一切大眾,不厭生死樂生天者、愛敬無上菩提心者、欲為彌勒作弟子者,當作是觀。作是觀者,應持五戒八齋具足戒,身心精進不求斷結,修十善法,一一思惟兜率陀天上上妙快樂,作是觀者名為正觀,若他觀者名為邪觀。」

爾時優波離即從座起,整衣服頭面作禮,白佛言:「世尊!兜率陀天上乃有如是極妙樂事,今此大士何時于閻浮提沒生於彼天?」

佛告優波離:「彌勒先於波羅捺國劫波利村波婆利大婆羅門家生,卻後十二年二月十五日,還本生處,結加趺坐如入滅定,身紫金色光明艷赫如百千日,上至兜率陀天,其身舍利如鑄金像不動不搖,身圓光中有首楞嚴三昧般

The fleshy protuberance on the top of his head is the color of dark blue lapis lazuli, and his heavenly crown is adorned with Sakya-Vaidurya-mani and hundreds of thousands of billions of Jen-shu-ka jewels. 【English Translation】 English version: The heavenly musicians play music, holding heavenly Mandala flowers (Mandala flower) and Mahamandala flowers (Mahamandala flower), scattering them upon those beings and praising: 'Excellent! Excellent! Good man! Because you have extensively cultivated meritorious deeds in Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, the world we live in), you are born here. This place is called Tushita Heaven (Tushita Heaven), and the lord of this heaven is named Maitreya (Maitreya). You should take refuge in him.' That person immediately prostrates in response. After prostrating, upon closely observing the white hair mark light between Maitreya's eyebrows, he immediately transcends the sins of ninety billion kalpas of birth and death. In future lives, they will meet all the Buddhas of the Bhadrakalpa (Bhadrakalpa), and in the Nakshatra-kalpa (Nakshatra-kalpa), they will also meet all the Buddhas, the World Honored Ones, and receive predictions of Bodhi before the Buddhas.'

The Buddha told Upali (Upali, one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha, foremost in upholding the precepts): 'After the Buddha's Parinirvana, if Bhikkhus (Bhikkhu, ordained monks), Bhikkhunis (Bhikkhuni, ordained nuns), Upasakas (Upasaka, laymen), Upasikas (Upasika, laywomen), as well as Devas (Deva), Nagas (Naga), Yakshas (Yaksa), Gandharvas (Gandharva), Asuras (Asura), Garudas (Garuda), Kinnaras (Kinnara), Mahoragas (Mahoraga), and other such assemblies, if anyone hears the name of Maitreya Bodhisattva Mahasattva (Maitreya Bodhisattva Mahasattva), and upon hearing it, rejoices, respectfully pays homage, this person, upon the end of their life, as quickly as a snap of the fingers, will be reborn in Tushita Heaven, just as described earlier; merely hearing the name of Maitreya, upon the end of their life, they will not fall into dark places, border regions, wrong views, or evil precepts, but will always be born with right views, have complete families, and will not slander the Three Jewels.'

The Buddha told Upali: 'If good men and good women, who have violated various precepts and committed various evil deeds, hear the name of this Bodhisattva of great compassion, prostrate themselves with their five limbs on the ground, and sincerely repent, these evil deeds will quickly be purified. In future lives, if beings hear the name of this Bodhisattva of great compassion, create images of the Bodhisattva, and offer incense, flowers, clothing, silken canopies, banners, and pay homage, and keep Maitreya Bodhisattva in mind, when this person is about to die, Maitreya Bodhisattva will emit the light of the white hair mark of a great man from between his eyebrows, and together with the heavenly beings, will rain down Mandala flowers to welcome this person. This person will instantly be reborn in Tushita Heaven, meet Maitreya, and bow their head to the feet of Maitreya.'


禮敬,未舉頭頃便得聞法,即于無上道得不退轉,于未來世得值恒河沙等諸佛如來。」

佛告優波離:「汝今諦聽,是彌勒菩薩于未來世,當爲眾生作大歸依處。若有歸依彌勒菩薩者,當知是人于無上道得不退轉。彌勒菩薩成多陀阿伽度、阿羅訶、三藐三佛陀時,如此行人見佛光明即得授記。」

佛告優波離:「佛滅度后,四部弟子、天、龍、鬼神,若有欲生兜率陀天者,當作是觀繫念思惟,念兜率陀天,持佛禁戒,一日至七日,思念十善行十善道,以此功德迴向愿生彌勒前者,當作是觀。作是觀者,若見一天人、見一蓮花,若一念頃稱彌勒名,此人除卻千二百劫生死之罪;但聞彌勒名合掌恭敬,此人除卻五十劫生死之罪;若有敬禮彌勒者,除卻百億劫生死之罪;設不生天,未來世中龍花菩提樹下亦得值遇,發無上心。」

說是語時,無量大眾即從坐起,頂禮佛足,禮彌勒足,繞佛及彌勒菩薩百千匝。未得道者各發誓願:「我等天人八部,今于佛前發誠實誓願,于未來世值遇彌勒,舍此身已皆得上生兜率陀天。」

【English Translation】 English version: 'Paying homage, one can hear the Dharma even before raising one's head, and thus attain non-retrogression on the unsurpassed path, and in future lives, encounter Buddhas and Tathagatas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River.' The Buddha told Upali (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, foremost in upholding the precepts): 'Listen carefully now, this Bodhisattva Maitreya, in future lives, will become the great refuge for all beings. If there are those who take refuge in Bodhisattva Maitreya, know that these people will attain non-retrogression on the unsurpassed path. When Bodhisattva Maitreya achieves Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (Perfect Enlightenment), such practitioners, upon seeing the Buddha's light, will receive a prophecy (of future Buddhahood).' The Buddha told Upali: 'After the Buddha's Parinirvana, the fourfold assembly (bhikshus, bhikshunis, upasakas, upasikas), gods, dragons, and spirits, if there are those who wish to be reborn in Tushita Heaven (one of the six heavens of the desire realm, the abode of Bodhisattva Maitreya), they should contemplate in this way, focusing their minds and thoughts, contemplating Tushita Heaven, upholding the Buddha's precepts, from one to seven days, contemplating the ten wholesome actions (not killing, not stealing, not engaging in sexual misconduct, not lying, not speaking divisively, not speaking harshly, not engaging in idle chatter, not being greedy, not being angry, not being deluded) and the ten wholesome paths, using these merits to dedicate and wish to be reborn before Maitreya, they should contemplate in this way. Those who contemplate in this way, if they see a deva, see a lotus flower, if they recite the name of Maitreya Bodhisattva for a single moment, this person will eliminate the sins of twelve hundred kalpas of birth and death; merely hearing the name of Maitreya and joining their palms in reverence, this person will eliminate the sins of fifty kalpas of birth and death; if there are those who respectfully bow to Maitreya, they will eliminate the sins of a hundred billion kalpas of birth and death; even if they are not reborn in heaven, in future lives, under the Dragon Flower Bodhi Tree, they will also encounter Maitreya, and generate the unsurpassed Bodhi mind.' While these words were being spoken, countless multitudes immediately rose from their seats, bowed at the Buddha's feet, bowed at Maitreya's feet, and circumambulated the Buddha and Bodhisattva Maitreya hundreds and thousands of times. Those who had not attained the path each made vows: 'We, the eight classes of devas and humans (devas, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas), now make a sincere vow before the Buddha, that in future lives, we will encounter Maitreya, and after abandoning this body, we will all be reborn in Tushita Heaven.' 佛告阿難:「汝持佛語慎勿忘失,為未來世開生天路示菩提相,莫斷佛種。此經名『彌勒菩薩般涅槃』,亦名『觀彌勒菩薩生兜率陀天勸發菩提心』,如是受持。」佛說是語時,他方來會十萬菩薩,得首楞嚴三昧;八萬億諸天發菩提心,皆愿隨從彌勒下生。

We beseech you, World Honored One! How should we uphold the essence of this Dharma? What should this sutra be named?' The Buddha told Ananda (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples): 'You must remember my words and not forget them. For the sake of future generations, open the path to the heavens, reveal the appearance of Bodhi (enlightenment), and do not cut off the Buddha's seed. This sutra is named 'Maitreya Bodhisattva's Parinirvana', and also named 'Contemplating Maitreya Bodhisattva's Birth in Tushita Heaven and Encouraging the Bodhi Mind'. Uphold it in this way.'
