大智舍利弗,能隨佛轉法輪,佛法之大將,憐愍眾生故,白佛言:「世尊!如前後經中說,彌勒當下作佛,愿欲廣聞彌勒功德、神力、國土莊嚴之事,眾生以何施、何戒、何慧得見彌勒?」

爾時,佛告舍利弗:「我今廣為汝說,當一心聽。舍利弗!四大海水,以漸減少,三千由旬;是時,閻浮提地,長十千由旬,廣八千由旬,平坦如鏡,名華軟草,遍覆其地;種種樹木,華果茂盛,其樹悉皆高三十里,城邑次比,雞飛相及。人壽八萬四千歲,智慧威德,色力具足,安隱快樂;唯有三病:一者、便利,二者、飲食,三者、衰老;女人年五百歲,爾乃行嫁。

「是時有一大城,名翅頭末,長十二由旬,廣七由旬,端嚴殊妙,莊嚴清凈,福德之人充滿其中,以福德人故,豐樂安隱。其城七寶,上有樓閣,戶牖軒窗,皆是眾寶,真珠羅網,彌覆其上;街巷道陌,廣十二里,掃灑清凈。有大力龍王,名曰多羅尸棄;其池近城,龍王宮殿在此池中;常于夜半,降微細雨,用淹塵土,其地潤澤,譬若油涂,行人來往,

【English Translation】 English version The great wise Shariputra (one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha, known for his wisdom), you are able to follow the Buddha in turning the Dharma wheel (the propagation of Buddhist teachings), you are a great general of the Dharma. Out of compassion for sentient beings, you say to the Buddha: 'World Honored One! As it is said in previous scriptures, Maitreya (the future Buddha) will become a Buddha. I wish to widely hear about Maitreya's merits, spiritual powers, and the adornments of his land. Through what kind of giving, precepts, and wisdom can sentient beings see Maitreya?' At that time, the Buddha told Shariputra: 'I will now explain it to you in detail, you should listen attentively. Shariputra! The four great seas will gradually decrease, decreasing by three thousand yojanas (an ancient Indian unit of length); at that time, the land of Jambudvipa (the world we live in) will be ten thousand yojanas long and eight thousand yojanas wide, flat like a mirror, covered with soft grass called 'Hua Ruan'; various trees, with abundant flowers and fruits, the trees will all be thirty li high, cities will be next to each other, and chickens can fly to reach them. People will live for eighty-four thousand years, with wisdom, power, appearance, and strength all complete, peaceful and happy; there will only be three diseases: one is urination and defecation, two is eating and drinking, and three is aging; women will marry at the age of five hundred.' 'At that time, there will be a great city called Ketumati (the future capital city of Maitreya Buddha), twelve yojanas long and seven yojanas wide, upright and solemn, extremely beautiful, pure and adorned, filled with people of merit, and because of the people of merit, it will be prosperous, peaceful, and happy. This city will be built with seven treasures, with pavilions above, and the doors and windows will all be made of various treasures, covered with pearl nets; the streets and alleys will be twelve li wide, and swept very clean. There will be a powerful dragon king named Tarashikhi (name of the dragon king); his pond will be near the city, and the dragon king's palace will be in this pond; often in the middle of the night, he will send down fine rain to moisten the dust, making the ground moist, like it has been oiled, and people will come and go,'


無有塵坌。時世人民,福德所致,巷陌處處,有明珠柱,皆高十里,其光明曜,晝夜無異,燈燭之明,不復為用;城邑舍宅,及諸里巷,乃至無有細微土塊,純以金沙覆地,處處皆有金銀之聚。有大夜叉神,名跋陀波羅賒塞迦(秦言善教),常護此城,掃除清凈;若有便利不凈,地裂受之,受已還合。人命將終,自然行詣冢間而死。時世安樂,無有怨賊劫竊之患;城邑聚落,無閉門者,亦無衰惱、水火刀兵,及諸饑饉、毒害之難。人常慈心,恭敬和順,調伏諸根,語言謙遜。

Their light shines brightly, day and night without difference. The light of lamps and candles is no longer needed. The cities, towns, residences, and all the lanes and alleys, do not even have tiny clods of earth; they are purely covered with golden sand. Everywhere there are gatherings of gold and silver. There is a great Yaksha (a type of spirit) god named Bhadra-pala-sha-seka (meaning 'Good Teaching' in Chinese), who constantly protects this city, sweeping and cleaning it. If there is any excrement or impurity, the ground cracks open to receive it, and after receiving it, it closes up again. When people are about to die, they naturally go to the graveyard and die there. At that time, the world is peaceful and happy, without the calamities of enemies, thieves, or robbers. The cities and villages have no doors that need to be closed. There is no decline, distress, water, fire, swords, or weapons, nor any famines, poisons, or disasters. People always have compassionate hearts, are respectful and harmonious, subdue their senses, and speak with humility.

'Sariputra (one of the principal disciples of the Buddha)! Now I will briefly tell you about the wealth and happiness of the cities and towns in that land. In those gardens and ponds, there is naturally water with eight qualities of merit, and blue, red, crimson, white, and mixed-color lotuses cover them all over. On the four sides of the ponds, there are stairways made of four kinds of jewels. Various birds gather together: geese, ducks, mandarin ducks, peacocks, kingfishers, parrots, Sarika birds, Jivajivaka birds, and other birds with wonderful sounds are always there. There are also other kinds of birds with wonderful sounds, too numerous to count. Fruit trees and fragrant trees fill the country. At that time, in Jambudvipa (the continent where humans live), there is always a pleasant fragrance, like that of Fragrant Mountain. The flowing water is beautiful, and its taste is sweet and can cure diseases. The rain falls in due season, and the grains and crops grow luxuriantly, without weeds or impurities. One sowing yields seven harvests, with very little effort and a great yield. The food is fragrant and delicious, and it provides abundant energy.'

'At that time, that country has a Chakravartin (wheel-turning king) named Sankha (conch), who has four kinds of troops, but does not rule the four continents with force or might. That king has a thousand sons, who are brave, strong, and powerful, and able to defeat enemies. 「其城中有大婆羅門主,名曰妙梵;婆羅門女,名曰梵摩波提;彌勒託生,以為父母,身紫金色,三十二相,眾生視之,無有厭足,身力無量,不可思議,光明照曜,無所障礙,日月火珠,都不復現;身長千尺,胸廣三十丈,面長十二丈四尺,身體具足,端正無比,成就相好,如鑄金像,肉眼清凈,見十由旬,常光四照,面百由旬,日月火珠,光不復現,但有佛光,微妙第一。

「爾時彌勒佛,見諸大眾,作是念言:『今諸人等,不以生天樂故,亦復不為今世樂故,來至我所,但為涅槃常樂因緣。是諸人等,皆于佛法中,種諸善根,釋迦牟尼佛遣來付我,是故今者,皆至我所,我今受之。是諸人等,或以讀誦,分別決定,修妒路、毗尼、阿毗曇藏,修諸功德,來至我所。或以衣、食施人,持戒智慧,修此功德,來至我所。或以幡蓋、華香,供養于佛,修此功德,來至我所。或以佈施、持齋,修習慈心,行此功德,來至我所。或為苦惱眾生,令其得樂,修此功德,來至我所。或以持戒、忍辱,修清凈慈,以此功德,來至我所。或以施僧常食,齋講設會供養飯食,修此功德,來至我所。或以持戒、多聞,修行禪定,無漏智慧,以此功德,來至我所。或以起塔、供養舍利,以此功德,來至我所。善哉釋迦牟尼佛!能善教化如是等百千萬億眾生,令至我所。』

「彌勒佛如是三稱讚釋迦牟尼佛,然後說法,而作是言:『汝等眾生,能為難事,于彼惡世,貪慾、瞋恚、愚癡、迷惑、短命人中,能修持戒,作諸功德,甚為希有。爾時眾生,不識父母;沙門、婆羅門,不知道法,互相惱害,近刀兵劫,深著五欲,嫉妒諂曲,佞濁邪

【English Translation】 English version: Such an immeasurable number of beings, seeing the suffering of the world, will all leave home in the Dharma of Maitreya Buddha. At that time, Maitreya Buddha, seeing the great assembly, thought to himself: 『These people have come to me not for the sake of heavenly bliss, nor for the sake of worldly pleasures, but for the sake of the eternal bliss of Nirvana. These people have all planted good roots in the Buddha's Dharma. Shakyamuni Buddha sent them to be entrusted to me, and therefore they have all come to me now, and I accept them. Some of these people have come to me through reading, distinguishing, and determining the Sutras (修妒路), the Vinaya (毗尼), and the Abhidhamma (阿毗曇藏), cultivating various merits. Some have come to me through giving clothes and food to others, upholding precepts, and cultivating wisdom, thus cultivating these merits. Some have come to me through offering banners, canopies, flowers, and incense to the Buddha, thus cultivating these merits. Some have come to me through giving alms, observing fasts, and cultivating loving-kindness, thus practicing these merits. Some have come to me through bringing joy to suffering beings, thus cultivating these merits. Some have come to me through upholding precepts, practicing patience, and cultivating pure loving-kindness, thus using these merits. Some have come to me through giving regular meals to the Sangha, holding fasts and Dharma talks, and setting up assemblies to offer food, thus cultivating these merits. Some have come to me through upholding precepts, learning widely, practicing meditation, and attaining undefiled wisdom, thus using these merits. Some have come to me through building pagodas and making offerings to relics, thus using these merits. How excellent is Shakyamuni Buddha! He is able to skillfully teach such hundreds of millions of beings, causing them to come to me.』 Maitreya Buddha praised Shakyamuni Buddha three times in this way, and then began to preach the Dharma, saying: 『You beings are able to do difficult things. In that evil world full of greed, hatred, ignorance, delusion, and short lives, you are able to uphold precepts and perform various merits, which is truly rare. At that time, beings do not recognize their parents; Sramanas (沙門) and Brahmanas (婆羅門) do not know the right path, they harm each other, they are close to the time of war and destruction, they are deeply attached to the five desires, and they are jealous, flattering, deceitful, and wicked.』

Sakyamuni Buddha, for your sake, gives his head in charity, cutting off ears, nose, hands, feet, limbs, enduring all kinds of suffering, to benefit you.' 'Maitreya Buddha (the future Buddha) thus enlightened and comforted immeasurable beings, causing them to rejoice, and then preached the Dharma to them; virtuous people filled the assembly, respectfully believing and accepting, yearning for the master, each thinking: 'The five desires are impure, the root of all suffering, and can also eliminate sorrow and vexation, knowing that the laws of suffering and joy are impermanent.' 「爾時天人羅剎等,見大力魔,佛降伏之,千萬億無量眾生,皆大歡喜,合掌唱言:『甚為希有!甚為希有!如來神力,功德具足,不可思議。』是時,天人以種種雜色蓮花,及曼陀羅花,散佛前地,積至於膝,諸天空中,作百千伎樂,歌嘆佛德。爾時,魔王于初夜、后夜,覺諸人民,作如是言:『汝等既得人身,值遇好時,不應竟夜,眠睡覆心;汝等若立、若坐,常勤精進正念,諦觀五陰,無常、苦、空、無我。汝等勿為放逸,不行佛教,若起惡業,后必致悔。』時街巷男女,皆效此語言:『汝等勿為放逸,不行佛教,若起惡業,后必有悔;當勤方便,精進求道,莫失法利,而徒生徒死也;如是大師,拔苦惱者,甚為難遇,堅固精進,當得常樂涅槃。』

'At that time, devas, rakshasas, and others, seeing the mighty Mara subdued by the Buddha, countless millions of beings were overjoyed, and with palms joined, they exclaimed: 'Extremely rare! Extremely rare! The Tathagata's (Tathagata) divine power is complete with merit and virtue, inconceivable.' At that time, the devas scattered various colored lotuses and Mandarava flowers on the ground before the Buddha, piling them up to their knees. The devas in the sky played hundreds of thousands of musical instruments, singing praises of the Buddha's virtues. At that time, the Mara King, in the early and late watches of the night, awakened the people, saying: 'Since you have obtained a human body and encountered a good time, you should not sleep all night, letting drowsiness cover your minds; whether you are standing or sitting, you should always be diligent and strive forward with right mindfulness, carefully observing the five skandhas (five aggregates), which are impermanent, suffering, empty, and without self. You should not be negligent and fail to practice the Buddha's teachings, for if you create evil karma, you will surely regret it later.' At that time, the men and women in the streets and alleys all imitated this language: 'You should not be negligent and fail to practice the Buddha's teachings, for if you create evil karma, you will surely regret it later; you should diligently seek skillful means and strive to seek the path, do not lose the benefits of the Dharma, and vainly live and die; such a great master, who removes the suffering of beings, is very difficult to encounter, be firm and diligent, and you will attain the constant joy of Nirvana.'

'At that time, the disciples of Maitreya Buddha (Maitreya Buddha) were all upright in appearance, complete with dignified conduct,厭惡生老病死, learned and widely studied, guarding the Dharma treasury, practicing dhyana (meditation), and attaining freedom from all desires, like a bird emerging from its nest. At that time, Maitreya Buddha (Maitreya Buddha), desiring to go to the elder Mahakasyapa (Mahakasyapa)'s dwelling, went with the fourfold assembly to Grdhrakuta Mountain (Grdhrakuta), and on the summit of the mountain, saw Mahakasyapa (Mahakasyapa). 昧,是人雖有大神力,而無高心,能令眾生,得大歡喜,常愍下賤、貧惱眾生,救拔苦惱,令得安隱。』彌勒佛贊大迦葉骨身言:『善哉大神德,釋師子大弟子大迦葉,于彼惡世,能修其心。』爾時人眾,見大迦葉為彌勒佛所贊,百千億人,因是事已,厭世得道;是諸人等,念釋迦牟尼佛,于惡世中,教化無量眾生,令得具六神通,成阿羅漢。爾時,說法之處,廣八十由旬,長百由旬;其中人眾,若坐若立,若近若遠,各各自見佛在其前,獨為說法。

「彌勒佛住世六萬歲,憐愍眾生,令得法眼;滅度之後,法住於世,亦六萬歲。汝等宜應精進,發清凈心,起諸善業,得見世間燈明彌勒佛身,必無疑也。」

佛說是經已,舍利弗等歡喜受持。

佛說彌勒下產生佛經

【English Translation】 English version 'Ignorant ones, even if a person has great divine power but no lofty mind, they can bring great joy to sentient beings, constantly having compassion for orphans and widows (**), impoverished and afflicted beings, rescuing them from suffering, and enabling them to attain peace.' Maitreya Buddha praised Mahakasyapa's skeletal remains, saying, 'Excellent, great in divine virtue, Sakya Lion's (an honorific title for Sakyamuni Buddha) great disciple Mahakasyapa, in that evil age, was able to cultivate his mind.' At that time, the crowd, seeing Mahakasyapa praised by Maitreya Buddha, hundreds of billions of people, because of this event, became weary of the world and attained the path; these people, remembering Sakyamuni Buddha, in the evil world, taught countless sentient beings, enabling them to obtain the six supernormal powers and become Arhats. At that time, the place where the Dharma was taught was eighty yojanas (Yojana, an ancient Indian unit of length) wide and one hundred yojanas long; the crowd within, whether sitting or standing, whether near or far, each saw the Buddha in front of them, teaching the Dharma solely for them.

'Maitreya Buddha will dwell in the world for sixty thousand years, having compassion for sentient beings, enabling them to obtain the Dharma eye; after his Parinirvana, the Dharma will remain in the world for sixty thousand years as well. You should be diligent, generate a pure mind, and engage in various virtuous deeds, so that you may see the body of the Lamp of the World, Maitreya Buddha, without any doubt.'

After the Buddha finished speaking this Sutra, Sariputra and others joyfully accepted and upheld it.

The Sutra of Maitreya's Descent into Buddhahood Spoken by the Buddha
