【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks the Ānanda's Questions on Auspicious and Inauspicious Matters in Serving the Buddha Sutra

Translated by An Shih-kao, a Tripiṭaka master from Parthia during the Later Han Dynasty

Ānanda said, 'Thus have I heard.'

Ānanda said to the Buddha, 'Some people who serve the Buddha attain wealth, honor, and harmonious relationships, while others decline and fail to achieve harmony. Why is this not equal? I wish that the Buddha, the supreme among humans, would universally explain this for us.'

The Buddha told Ānanda, 'Some people who venerate the Buddha receive precepts from a wise teacher, do not lose diligence, and diligently practice what they have received. They bow in the morning and evening, respectfully light lamps, observe fasting without weariness, and their hearts are always filled with joy. Good spirits protect them, and whatever they do is harmonious, and everything increases twofold. They are respected by nāgas (dragons, guardians of the Dharma), gods, ghosts, spirits, and all people. In the future, they will surely attain enlightenment. These good men and good women are true disciples of the Buddha.

'Some people who serve the Buddha do not encounter good teachers, do not understand the teachings of the scriptures, and their faith is not firm. Even if they have the name of precepts, they violate the correct rules. They have no images, nor do they burn incense or light lamps to make obeisance. They constantly harbor anger, utter malicious curses, do not observe the six fast days, and take pleasure in killing. They do not respect the Buddhist scriptures, placing them among miscellaneous objects in worn-out boxes, or on the beds of their wives in unclean places, or hanging them on the wall without a proper shelf or seat, treating them no differently from secular books. If they become ill, they do not think of the Buddha, but instead call upon shamans to divine and offer sacrifices, begging for help from evil spirits. The heavenly gods stay far away and cannot provide good protection. Demonic influences advance daily, and evil ghosts block the door, causing them to decline and fail in everything they do. Such people are sinners in this life and not disciples of the Buddha. After death, they will fall into hell, suffering various tortures, and their souls will experience unbearable pain. Foolish people are confused and cannot reflect on themselves. Having no merit from previous actions, they blame heaven and earth, accusing the sages and faulting the heavens. Their delusion is so extreme, and they are so foolish that they will ultimately be bound by the three evil paths (hell, hungry ghosts, and animals).

'People who attain enlightenment all begin with doing good. They use the scriptures and precepts to control their mind, body, and speech. Goodness is the best armor, not fearing swords and weapons. Goodness is the best boat, able to cross the river and abyss.'

【English Translation】 English version: One who can uphold trustworthiness will have inner peace and tranquility. In this life, joyous blessings will naturally follow, and the rewards of good deeds are not bestowed by deities. If one does not believe and does not uphold the scriptures and precepts, their next life will be even more difficult. Good and evil follow each person like a shadow, so do not harbor doubts and fall into evil paths, from which it is very difficult to escape. Truly believe and do not violate the precepts, and you will always be safe wherever you are; the Buddha's words are true and sincere, and will never deceive people. It is rare to encounter a Buddha in the world, and it is difficult to obtain a human body. You now serve the Buddha, which is a great blessing accumulated from past lives. You should think of repaying the Buddha's kindness, propagating the Dharma teachings, cultivating fields of merit, and practicing to attain liberation, so that you will have no worries wherever you go.

Ananda (one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha, known for his exceptional memory) then asked the Buddha: 'If one does not kill with their own hands, but instructs others to kill, what is their sin? Is there no sin?'

The Buddha said: 'Ananda! The sin of instructing others to kill is heavier than killing oneself. Why? Because some may be slaves or people of low status who have no intention to kill; others may be forced by kings or officials, acting against their will and being used by others. But those who instruct others to kill do so knowingly, plotting secretly to harm others and shifting the blame onto them, deceiving the Triple Gem (Triratna) and violating the laws of nature. Their sin is greater than any other; resentment is repaid with resentment, and they will suffer calamities generation after generation, without end. They will have no peace in this life, and after death, they will fall into hell, suffering intense pain. After emerging from hell, they will be reborn as animals, slaughtered, skinned, and boned, using their flesh to repay others. All of this is due to the violence and cruelty of past lives, harming sentient beings, harboring malicious intentions, and lacking compassion. Seeing others kill and rejoicing in it, using it to satisfy their own desires, such a sin is as deep as killing oneself.'

Ananda then asked the Buddha: 'If people in the world, including Buddhist disciples, despise their teachers, treat their teachers and virtuous people with malice, what is their sin?'

The Buddha said: 'Ananda! As a person, one should love the virtues of others and rejoice in their good deeds, and should not be jealous. Treating teachers and virtuous people with malice is no different from treating the Buddha with malice. Would it not be painful to shoot oneself with a ten-thousand-stone crossbow?'

Ananda said: 'Very painful, very painful! World-Honored One (Bhagavan, a respectful title for the Buddha)!'

The Buddha said: 'The pain of a person treating virtuous people and their teachers with malice is more intense than being shot with a crossbow!'

【English Translation】 English version: As a disciple, one must not belittle or be disrespectful to one's teacher, nor treat moral individuals with malice; moral individuals should be regarded as Buddhas, and should not be envied or slandered. A person with precepts and virtue can move the heavens, dragons, and spirits; none will fail to respect them. Rather throw oneself into fire, or cut off one's own flesh with a sharp knife, than to cautiously avoid envying and slandering good people, for such a sin is not small. Be cautious! Be cautious!

Ananda (one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha) again asked the Buddha, 'Teacher, is it permissible to scold disciples, exaggerating small offenses into great sins, without incurring guilt?'

The Buddha said, 'It is not permissible! It is not permissible! The righteousness between teacher and disciple arises naturally from a sense of duty; they should trust and treat each other with kindness, regarding the other as oneself; what one does not wish for oneself, do not impose on others, promote and uphold etiquette and laws, instruct them with the Way, and be harmonious, obedient, loyal, and virtuous, without resentment or litigation. The two aspects of disciple and teacher should be sincere; the teacher should act like a teacher, and the disciple should act like a disciple, without slandering each other, cautiously avoiding harboring poison, for small grievances can lead to great disasters, ultimately burning oneself. Observe the evil people and Mara Bhikshus (Bhikshus controlled by Mara) of the world, where teachers are not like teachers, and disciples are not like disciples, but only engage in evil together, without thinking of practicing the Way. They obstruct and destroy good people, coveting worldly possessions, without considering impermanence, accumulating wealth only to lose their lives, and after death, falling into evil realms, becoming hungry ghosts and animals, never before have they looked at each other like cattle, what do they seek in the world, and how can they think of repaying the Buddha's kindness? They should uphold the sutras and precepts, and lead each other on the path. The Way must be learned, the sutras must be read, and good deeds must be done, practicing good deeds, giving alms, and bestowing grace, saving spirits from suffering, transcending birth and death, do not be arrogant when seeing the virtuous, do not slander when seeing good, do not use small faults to condemn great sins, violating the law and losing reason, such a sin is the greatest, for sin and blessings have evidence. Fearful! Fearful!'

Ananda (one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha) again asked the Buddha, 'Disciples in the Dharma-ending Age, living in this realm of Mara, have many conditions, with the pursuit of household life, and the burdens of body, speech, and mind, how should they practice?'

The Buddha said, 'As a disciple of the Buddha, even with various conditions, one must uphold the precepts and not violate them, be honest, fearful, and cautious, respectfully take refuge in the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), be filial and serve one's parents, be cautious and kind both internally and externally, do not have deceitful or false thoughts, let one's heart and words be consistent, be skillful and expedient, know the timing of advance and retreat, in this way, one can do worldly affairs, but must not be controlled by worldly desires.'

【English Translation】 English version: Ananda said to the Buddha: 'What are worldly affairs? What are worldly intentions?' (Ananda: one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha; Buddha: the enlightened one)

The Buddha said: 'As a disciple of the Buddha, one may engage in buying and selling, using fair measures and scales to conduct business reasonably, but one must not use deceitful means to encroach upon the interests of others. Funerals, relocations, marriages, and weddings, these are called worldly affairs. As for worldly intentions, as a disciple of the Buddha, one must not engage in divination, seeking talismans, using spells or witchcraft, making sacrifices, praying for the removal of disasters, or fearing inauspicious things. Those who observe the Five Precepts (Five Precepts: not killing, not stealing, not committing sexual misconduct, not lying, not taking intoxicants) of the Buddha are people of merit and virtue, and there is nothing to fear. When undertaking any action, one should invoke the Three Jewels (Three Jewels: Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), and wherever one goes, it will be auspicious. Those who uphold the precepts and possess virtue are protected by the Dharma, and their strength is great. All gods, dragons, ghosts, and spirits will respect and submit to them; the precepts are noble, so wherever one goes, there is always peace. Those who do not understand this principle are creating obstacles for themselves. Good and evil arise from the mind, and fortune and misfortune are caused by one's actions, just as a shadow follows the body and an echo accompanies the sound. Heaven covers everything, and earth bears everything; the merit and virtue arising from observing the precepts are natural, and the gods will protect and move the ten directions. One's virtue is comparable to that of heaven, and one's merits are great. All the sages praise it, and it is difficult to measure. Wise people understand destiny and do not deviate from the right path until death. Those who understand Buddhism well can obtain the means to cross over the suffering of the world.'

Having heard what the Buddha said, Ananda arranged his robe and prostrated himself with his head touching the ground: 'Yes, World Honored One! We are fortunate to be able to be near the Tathagata (Tathagata: 'Thus Gone One', an epithet of the Buddha) and taste the Dharma with our ears. The Buddha's grace is vast and universal, and his compassion is great, pitying all beings and creating fields of merit for us so that we can escape suffering. The Buddha's words are true and trustworthy, but few believe them. This world is full of evil, and beings curse each other, mostly believing in ghosts and spirits, turning away from the right path and towards evil. Heaven is empty, but hell is full, which is truly lamentable! If there are any who believe, perhaps only one or two, why is the world decaying and reaching such a state? After the Buddha's Parinirvana (Parinirvana: the complete extinction of suffering, death and rebirth), the Dharma will exist alone, and few will practice it; the people will become false, gradually declining and perishing. Alas! How lamentable! What can we rely on? We only hope that the World Honored One will leave behind divine manifestations for later learners and not enter Nirvana (Nirvana: the ultimate state of enlightenment and liberation from suffering).'

Then Ananda offered a verse, saying:

'The Buddha is the protector of the three realms, His grace is vast, and his compassion is great, I hope for the sake of later learners, That he will not enter Nirvana. Alas, those who do not understand,'

【English Translation】 English version Muddled and unable to distinguish truth, The Dharma drum vibrates through the three thousand worlds, why can't you hear it? Because you are in a turbid world, surrounded by evil people, you yourself fall into a state of delusion and inversion, Not believing that there are Buddhas in the world, you create the root of all sins yourself. When life ends, you fall into hell, where swords dismember your body, You like to kill living beings during sacrifices, and boiling cauldrons await you there; Those who indulge in lust embrace copper pillars, and great fires burn on them, Those who slander pure and noble people have their tongues pulled out with iron hooks; Those who get drunk and behave without etiquette have molten copper poured into their mouths, If they are reborn as humans, they will be foolish, ignorant, and without righteousness. Those who do not kill will have longevity, without illness, and with strong health; Those who do not steal will be very wealthy in the future, and their money will always be abundant; Those who do not commit adultery will have pure minds and bodies, and their bodies will emit fragrance; Those who are sincere and do not deceive will be trusted and respected by people; Those who do not get drunk will be intelligent and wise, and respected by all. These five blessings transcend worldly laws, and are of the same kind as gods and humans, The blessings obtained increase billions of times, this is the true and clear principle. Foolish people cannot distinguish the right path, obscure the sages, and slander the Sammasambuddha (Perfectly Enlightened One), After death, they fall into Avici Hell (the most painful of the eight great hells), wearing iron wheels on their heads. They cannot die even if they seek death, and their bodies change in an instant, They are pierced and stabbed by spears and halberds, and their bodies are mutilated. Ignorant and unaware, not understanding things, evil people are tied and bound together, They transmigrate through various paths, becoming the shapes of birds, beasts, and livestock, They are slaughtered by people, using their flesh to repay past sins, Without following the right path, they fall into evil realms, and it is very difficult to escape. It is already difficult to obtain a human body, and it is even more difficult to hear the Buddha's teachings, The Buddha (Buddha) is the protector of all beings, the most honored place of dwelling. He preaches the Dharma like nectar, hoping that later learners will universally practice it, Pity me for now manifesting profound wisdom, it is to have compassion for all beings. Opening up enlightenment, pointing out the path of liberation, those who practice thus attain liberation, Blessed people walk towards the light, realize the truth, and no longer have afflictions. Take refuge in the peaceful sages, cultivate fields of merit.

【English Translation】 English version: The path to immortality, Buddha's (Enlightened One) grace is unsurpassed, miraculously manifesting majestic light. May it enable all beings to partake of the nectar of Dharma, Sailing the ship of wisdom to the other shore, the Dharma chime resonates throughout the three thousand worlds. Attaining the state of no self and no other, may the blessings of the multitude turn the Dharma wheel, We are fortunate to receive the Buddha's (Enlightened One) gracious blessings, enabling us to relinquish the bonds of the twelve links of dependent origination, Joyfully bowing in reverence, we consciously take refuge in the most supreme Buddha (Enlightened One).

After Ananda (Buddha's attendant) completed his eulogy with bowed head, all those present at the assembly attained irreversible faith, their minds were opened, they aroused the great armor of resolve (sannaha) for the unsurpassed path, the nectar-like sound of the Dharma, its fragrance permeated the ten directions. The place of enlightenment manifested by the Buddha (Enlightened One) became a bridge for beings to reach liberation. Kings, ministers, gods, dragons, and spirits, hearing the Dharma spoken by the Buddha (Enlightened One), and the eulogy composed by Ananda (Buddha's attendant), were filled with sorrow and gratitude, admiration and joy, bowing their heads to the Buddha's (Enlightened One) feet, and paying respects to Ananda (Buddha's attendant), receiving the teachings and departing.
