聞如是:
一時,佛在舍衛國度于君民,與除饉眾、菩薩大士、天、龍、鬼神、世間人民無央數,眾會聽經。
是時,摩訶迦葉獨行教化到王舍城,常行大哀福于眾生,舍諸豪富而從貧乞。摩訶迦葉時欲分衛:「若其未行先三昧正受,何所貧人吾當福之?」即入王舍大城之中,見一孤母,最甚貧困,在於街巷大糞聚中,傍鑿糞聚以為巖窟,羸劣疾病常臥其中,孤單零丁無有衣食,便於巖窟施小籬以障五形。迦葉三昧知此人宿不植福是以今貧,知母壽命終日在近:「若吾不度,永失福堂。」
母時飢困,長者青衣而棄米汁,臭惡難言,母從乞之,即以破瓦盛著左右。摩訶迦葉到其所,咒愿言:「且多少施我,可得大福。」
爾時老母,即說偈言:
「舉身得疾病, 孤窮安可言, 一國之最貧, 衣食不蓋形。 世有不慈人, 尚見矜愍憐, 云何名慈哀, 而不知此厄? 普世之寒苦, 無過我之身, 愿見哀矜恕, 實不為仁惜。」
摩訶迦葉即答偈言:
「佛為三界尊, 吾備在

一時,佛陀在舍衛國教化君王和百姓,與無數的除饉眾、菩薩大士、天、龍、鬼神、世間人民在一起,大眾集會聽聞佛法。
這時,摩訶迦葉(Mahākāśyapa,佛陀十大弟子之一,以頭陀行著稱)獨自教化來到王舍城,常常以大慈悲心為眾生求福,捨棄那些豪門富戶,而向貧窮的人乞食。摩訶迦葉將要乞食時心想:『如果我不先入三昧正受,我應當為哪個貧窮的人求福呢?』於是進入王舍大城之中,看見一位孤苦的老母,極其貧困,住在街巷裡的一大堆糞便之中,在糞堆旁邊挖出一個洞穴作為棲身之所,身體虛弱多病,常常躺在裡面,孤單無依,沒有衣食,就在洞穴前用小籬笆遮擋身體。摩訶迦葉通過三昧得知這個人前世沒有種福,所以今生貧困,知道老母的壽命將盡:『如果我不度化她,她將永遠失去進入福堂的機會。』
老母當時飢餓困苦,一個富家子弟的僕人倒掉了散發著惡臭難以言喻的米汁,老母向他乞討,就用破瓦片盛著放在身邊。摩訶迦葉來到她那裡,祝願說:『請施捨我一點,可以得到大福。』
當時老母,就說了這樣的偈語:
『渾身都是疾病,孤苦貧窮難以訴說, 我是全國最貧窮的人,衣不蔽體食不果腹。 世上還有不慈悲的人,尚且知道憐憫我, 怎麼能稱作慈悲,卻不知道我的困境? 普天之下最寒冷困苦的,沒有超過我的, 希望您能哀憐寬恕我,實在不是吝惜不捨得。』
摩訶迦葉就用偈語回答說:

The Buddha Speaks of Mahākāśyapa Saving the Poor Mother Sutra
Translated by Tripiṭaka Guṇabhadra of the Kingdom of Khotan during the Song Dynasty
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was in the Kingdom of Shravasti, teaching the rulers and the people, together with countless members of the Saṃgha, Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, devas, nāgas, yakshas, and people of the world, who gathered to listen to the Dharma.
At that time, Mahākāśyapa (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, known for his ascetic practices) was traveling alone to teach and transform beings in the city of Rajagriha, constantly seeking blessings for all beings with great compassion, abandoning the wealthy and powerful and begging from the poor. When Mahākāśyapa was about to beg for food, he thought: 'If I do not first enter samadhi and attain right concentration, for which poor person should I seek blessings?' Then he entered the great city of Rajagriha and saw a solitary old woman, extremely poor, living in a large pile of dung in the street, digging a cave next to the dung heap as her dwelling, weak and ill, constantly lying within it, alone and helpless, without clothing or food, using a small fence to shield her body from view. Mahākāśyapa, through samadhi, knew that this person had not planted good seeds in the past, and therefore was poor in this life, and knew that the old woman's life was coming to an end: 'If I do not liberate her, she will forever lose the opportunity to enter the realm of blessings.'
The old woman was hungry and distressed at that time. A servant of a wealthy man discarded rice water that was foul-smelling and indescribable. The old woman begged for it and used broken tiles to hold it by her side. Mahākāśyapa came to her and offered a blessing, saying: 'Please give me a little, and you will receive great blessings.'
At that time, the old woman spoke the following verse:
'My body is afflicted with illness, my loneliness and poverty are beyond words, I am the poorest person in the entire country, my clothes cannot cover my body, and I lack food. Even those who are not compassionate in the world still show pity and sympathy, How can you be called compassionate, yet not know my plight? There is no one more cold and miserable in the world than I am, I hope you will have mercy and forgive me, it is not that I am unwilling to give.'
Mahākāśyapa then replied with a verse:
'The Buddha is the most honored in the three realms, I am prepared to receive'
其中, 欲除汝饑貧, 是故從貧乞。 若能減身口, 分銖以為施, 長夜得解脫, 後生得豪富。」
爾時,老母重說偈言:
「實如仁所言, 生世無功德, 今在糞窟中, 不凈涂其身。 飲食無分米, 羸形而不覆, 如今之極貧, 施意與愿違。」
摩訶迦葉重說偈言:
「母說處不悅, 饑窮無以施, 若其有施意, 此則不為貧。 若復知慚羞, 此則著法衣, 如母此二事, 衣食為備足。 世有顓愚人, 俗衣寶谷多, 無慚不念施, 計后此大貧。 惶荒設福德, 可謂為希有, 信哉罪福眾, 至誠不虛說。」
爾時,老母聞偈歡喜,心念前日有臭米汁,欲以施之則不可飲,遙啟迦葉:「哀我受不?」
摩訶迦葉答言:「大善!」
母即在窟匍匐取之,形體裸露不得持出,側身僂體,籬上授與。迦葉受之,尊口咒愿:「使蒙福安。」
迦葉心念:「若吾赍去著余處飲之者,母則不信,謂吾棄之。」即于母前,飲訖蕩缽,還著布囊中。
於是老母特復真信。迦葉自念:「當現神足,令此母人必獲大安。」即沒入地,更在虛空身出水火,半身以上現其水出,半身以下復現火出;又復

這時,老母聽了偈語,心生歡喜,想起前幾天還有一些發臭的米汁,想用來佈施卻不能喝,於是遙遙地對迦葉(Kāśyapa)說:『可憐我,您能接受嗎?』
摩訶迦葉(Mahākāśyapa)回答說:『太好了!』
老母立即在糞坑中匍匐著去取米汁,因為身體虛弱,無法拿出來,只好側著身子,彎著腰,在籬笆上遞給迦葉(Kāśyapa)。迦葉(Kāśyapa)接過米汁,用尊貴的口為她祝願:『愿您蒙受福報,得到安樂。』
迦葉(Kāśyapa)心想:『如果我拿著米汁到別的地方喝,老母就不會相信我,會認為我把它扔掉了。』於是就在老母面前,喝完米汁,洗乾淨缽,放回布袋中。
於是老母更加堅定了信心。迦葉(Kāśyapa)心想:『我應當顯現神足通,讓這位老母必定獲得大安樂。』隨即沒入地下,又在虛空中顯現出身出水火的神通,半身以上顯現出水,半身以下又顯現出火;又
【English Translation】 English version: 『To remove your hunger and poverty, that is why I beg from you in your poverty. If you can reduce a little from your body and mouth, Even a fraction to give as alms, You will gain liberation in the long night, and in the next life, you will be wealthy.』
At that time, the old mother repeated the verse, saying:
『Indeed, as you say, I was born without merit, Now I am in a dung pit, smearing my body with filth. I have not a grain of rice to eat, my frail body is uncovered, As extremely poor as I am now, my intention to give is contrary to my wishes.』
Mahākāśyapa (one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha, known for his ascetic practices) repeated the verse, saying:
『Mother says her situation is unpleasant, hungry and poor, unable to give, If there is an intention to give, then this is not poverty. If one still knows shame and embarrassment, then this is wearing the Dharma robe, Like mother, possessing these two qualities, clothing and food will be sufficiently provided. There are foolish people in the world, wearing fine clothes and possessing much grain, Without shame and without thought of giving, calculating for the future, this is great poverty. To think of cultivating merit in distress, this can be said to be rare, Believe in the consequences of sin and merit, sincere and truthful words are not false.』
At that time, the old mother heard the verse and rejoiced. She remembered that she had some rancid rice water from the previous days, which she wanted to give as alms but could not drink. So she remotely said to Kāśyapa (Mahākāśyapa): 『Have pity on me, can you accept it?』
Mahākāśyapa (Mahākāśyapa) replied: 『Excellent!』
The mother immediately crawled in the dung pit to retrieve it, but because her body was weak, she could not hold it out. She had to lean sideways, bending over, and hand it over the fence to Kāśyapa (Mahākāśyapa). Kāśyapa (Mahākāśyapa) received it and blessed her with his venerable mouth: 『May you receive blessings and attain peace.』
Kāśyapa (Mahākāśyapa) thought: 『If I take the rice water elsewhere to drink, the mother will not believe me and will think I threw it away.』 So in front of the mother, he drank the rice water, washed the bowl, and put it back in his cloth bag.
Then the old mother's faith was strengthened. Kāśyapa (Mahākāśyapa) thought: 『I should manifest supernatural powers to ensure that this old mother attains great peace.』 Immediately, he disappeared into the ground and then appeared in the sky, manifesting water and fire from his body. The upper half of his body showed water, and the lower half showed fire; and then
變化改易,飛騰虛空,從其東出沒于西方,南北亦爾。
時,母人見此踴躍,一心長跪遙視迦葉。迦葉告曰:「母今意中所愿何等,世間豪富、轉輪聖王,及四天王、釋梵諸天?若復欲得須陀洹、斯陀含、阿那含、阿羅漢、辟支佛?若復欲得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提、阿惟三佛者,悉可得果其愿。」
爾時,母人厭於世苦,聞天堂上審為快樂,即啟迦葉:「愿以微福得生天上。」於是,迦葉忽然不現。老母數日壽終,即生第二忉利天上,威德巍巍,震動天地,光明挺特,譬如七日一時俱出照曜天宮。
釋提桓因即自驚悸:「何所人者,福德感動,將無此間有勝吾者?」即以天眼觀此天女福德使然。釋提桓因即偈問言:
「此女從何來? 大光明照曜, 譬如七大日, 一時俱出現; 震動吾宮殿, 威德難可當, 本修何福德, 得來升此天?」
是時,天女答帝釋偈言:
「本在閻浮提, 糞窟不凈中, 羸老兼疾病, 衣食不充備。 三千大千土, 釋迦文佛尊, 次有大弟子, 名摩訶迦葉。 哀矜從母乞, 說法我心歡, 貢其臭米汁, 施少獲愿多。 一心供福地, 愿欲生天上, 棄身糞窟中, 來生忉利天。」
爾時,

At that time, the old woman, seeing this, rejoiced and knelt with one mind, gazing afar at Kasyapa (Mahakasyapa, one of the ten great disciples of Sakyamuni Buddha, known for his ascetic practices). Kasyapa (Mahakasyapa) said to her, 'Mother, what do you desire in your heart? Worldly wealth, a Cakravartin (Universal Monarch), or the positions of the Four Heavenly Kings, Śakra and Brahma (Śakra and Brahma, protective deities in Buddhism)? Or do you wish to attain the fruits of Srotapanna (Stream-enterer), Sakrdagamin (Once-returner), Anagamin (Non-returner), Arhat (Worthy One), or Pratyekabuddha (Solitary Buddha)? At that time, the old woman, weary of worldly suffering and hearing that there was indeed happiness in heaven, pleaded with Kasyapa (Mahakasyapa), 'May I, with my meager merit, be reborn in heaven.' Thereupon, Kasyapa (Mahakasyapa) suddenly disappeared. The old mother passed away a few days later and was reborn in the second heaven of Trayastrimsa (Trayastrimsa, one of the six heavens of desire), with majestic power, shaking heaven and earth, and with unique radiance, like seven suns appearing simultaneously, illuminating the heavenly palace. Śakra-devanam-Indra (Śakra-devanam-Indra, the lord of Trayastrimsa Heaven) was immediately alarmed, 'Who is this person whose merit is so moving? Could there be someone here who surpasses me?' He then used his divine eye to observe and learned that it was due to the merit of this heavenly woman. Śakra-devanam-Indra then asked in verse: 'From where does this heavenly woman come? Her great light shines so brightly, Like seven great suns, Appearing all at once; Shaking my palace, Her majestic power is hard to match, What merit did she cultivate, To ascend to this Trayastrimsa Heaven?' At that time, the heavenly woman answered Śakra-devanam-Indra in verse: 'Originally I was in Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, the world we live in), In an unclean place, a dung heap, Thin and old, and also sick, My clothing and food were insufficient. In the three thousand great thousand worlds, Sakyamuni Buddha (Sakyamuni Buddha) is the most venerable, Next, there is a great disciple, Named Mahakasyapa (Mahakasyapa). He compassionately begged from me, Hearing him preach, my heart rejoiced, I offered him smelly rice water, Though little the offering, great the reward. 天女即自念言:「此之福報,緣其前世供養迦葉所致,假令當以天上珍寶種種百千施上迦葉,猶尚未報須臾之恩。」即將侍女持天香華忽然來下,于虛空中散迦葉上,然後來下五體投地。禮畢卻住,叉手嘆曰:
「大千國土, 佛為特尊, 次有迦葉, 能閉罪門。 昔在閻浮, 糞窟之前, 為其貧母, 開說真言。 時母歡喜, 貢上米𤄜, 施如芥子, 獲報如山。 自致天女, 封受自然, 是故來下, 歸命福田。」
天女說已,即與侍從俱還天上。然後帝釋心念:「此女于閻浮提臭惡之中,以其米汁供養迦葉乃致此福,迦葉大哀,但福劣家不及大姓,當作良策,于閻浮提詣迦葉所,興設福祐。」
釋提洹因即與天后,持百味食盛小瓶中,下詣王舍大城巷邊作小陋屋,變其形狀似於老人,身體痟瘦僂行而步,公妻二人而共織蓆,自現貧窮乞人之狀,不儲飲食谷帛之具。
摩訶迦葉後行分衛,見此貧人而往乞食,公言:「至貧無有,如何?」迦葉咒愿:「良久不去。」
公言:「我等夫妻甚老,織蓆不暇,向乞少飯,適欲食之。聞仁慈德,但從貧乞欲以福之。今雖窮困,意自割捐以施賢者,審如所云令吾得福。」天食之香非世所聞,若豫開瓶苾芬

【English Translation】 English version The heavenly maiden then thought to herself: 'My blessings are due to my past life's offerings to Kasyapa (Kasyapa, one of the ten major disciples of the Buddha, known for his ascetic practices). Even if I were to offer hundreds and thousands of heavenly treasures to Kasyapa now, it would still not repay his kindness for even a moment.' Immediately, she brought her attendants, holding heavenly fragrant flowers, and suddenly descended, scattering the flowers in the sky above Kasyapa, and then descended, prostrating herself with all five limbs touching the ground. After the prostration, she stood aside, and with folded hands, exclaimed: 'In the great chiliocosm, the Buddha is the most revered, followed by Kasyapa, who can close the gates of sin. Once in Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, referring to the world we live in), in front of a dung pit, for his poor mother, he opened and spoke the true words. At that time, his mother was very happy, offering rice water, a donation as small as a mustard seed, yet she obtained blessings as great as a mountain. Therefore, I was able to become a heavenly maiden, naturally enjoying blessings. That is why I have come down today, to take refuge in this field of merit.' After the heavenly maiden spoke, she returned to heaven with her attendants. Then Indra (Indra, a Buddhist protector deity) thought: 'This heavenly maiden, in the foul place of Jambudvipa, obtained such blessings because of offering rice water to Kasyapa. Kasyapa is truly compassionate, but the quality of the field of merit depends on the conditions of the giver, and poor families cannot compare to wealthy families. I should think of a good plan to personally visit Kasyapa in Jambudvipa and cultivate meritorious deeds.' Therefore, Sakro devanam indrah (Sakro devanam indrah, i.e., Indra) together with the heavenly queen, carrying small bottles filled with hundreds of flavors of delicious food, descended to the alleyways of the great city of Rajagrha (Rajagrha, an ancient Indian city), transforming into a humble hut, changing their appearance to resemble old people, their bodies thin and hunched over as they walked. The couple wove mats together, appearing as poor beggars, not storing food, grains, or cloth. Mahakasyapa (Mahakasyapa) later went out for alms, saw these poor old people, and went to beg for food. The old man said, 'We are very poor, we have nothing, what can we do?' Kasyapa chanted blessings for them, 'not leaving for a long time'. The old man said, 'My wife and I are very old, and we are too busy weaving mats. We just begged for some food and were about to eat it. We heard of your kindness and virtue, and we specifically beg from the poor, wanting to use this to cultivate merit. Although we are poor now, we are willing to give up a little to offer to the virtuous one, if it is truly as you say that it can bring us blessings.' The fragrance of the heavenly food is not found in the world. If the bottle were opened beforehand, the fragrance would be very strong.
之香。迦葉覺之,全不肯取。即言:「道人!弊食不多,缽來取之。」
迦葉缽取受咒愿:「施家其香普熏王舍大城及其國界。」迦葉即嫌其香無量,即便三昧思惟其本,方坐三昧,公及母還復釋身,逕疾飛去,空中彈指歡喜無量。迦葉思惟即知帝釋化作老公,而為此變,欲增福祚。「吾今已受,不宜復還。」迦葉贊言:「善哉!帝釋!種福無厭,忍此醜類,來下殖福,必獲影報。」帝釋及后倍復欣踴。是時,天上伎樂來迎,帝釋到宮倍益歡喜。
佛告阿難:「此貧母人,一切世間無能及者,惠雖微少,福報甚多,以其苦厄興至心故,致無量福,福應之報。釋提桓因天上自恣,而舍豪尊來下殖福,獲報難量,是以如來說檀第一。閻浮提人愚癡可矜,其如此比有少少耳,汝當廣宣如來真言。」
佛說是時,天、龍、鬼神、四輩弟子、比丘僧,興設大福而至達嚫,愿及眾生,隨其志願,皆得果報。
佛說經已,一切眾會莫不欣樂,稽首作禮。
佛說摩訶迦葉度貧母經

佛說此經時,天、龍、鬼神、四輩弟子、比丘僧,都發起廣大的福德,直至圓滿的佈施,愿所有眾生,都能隨其志願,得到相應的果報。

佛說摩訶迦葉度貧母經
【English Translation】 English version: fragrance. Mahakasyapa noticed the fragrance and refused to take it at all. He immediately said, 'Ascetic! I don't have much coarse food. Please use your bowl to take it.'
Mahakasyapa took the food with his bowl and offered a blessing: 'May the fragrance of the donor's house pervade the great city of Rajagrha and its borders.' Mahakasyapa immediately disliked the immeasurable fragrance and immediately entered Samadhi to contemplate its origin. As soon as he entered Samadhi, the old man and old woman reverted to their identities as Sakra and Sakra's consort, quickly flew away, snapped their fingers in the air, and were infinitely joyful. Mahakasyapa contemplated and knew that Sakra had transformed into an old man to create this change, wanting to increase his blessings. 'I have already received the offering, and it is not appropriate to return it.' Mahakasyapa praised, 'Excellent! Sakra! There is no end to planting blessings. Enduring this ugly form, coming down to plant blessings, you will surely receive the corresponding reward.' Sakra and his consort were even more joyful and elated. At this time, heavenly musicians came to greet them, and Sakra was even more joyful upon returning to his palace.
The Buddha told Ananda: 'This poor mother is unmatched by anyone in all the world. Although her offering is small, her blessings are very great, because she gave rise to a sincere heart in the midst of hardship and suffering, and therefore obtained immeasurable blessings, and the reward of blessings is swift. Sakra enjoys freedom in the heavens, but abandons his noble status to come down and plant blessings, and the reward he obtains is immeasurable. Therefore, the Tathagata says that giving is the foremost. The people of Jambudvipa are foolish and pitiable, and there are very few examples like this. You should widely proclaim the Tathagata's true words.'
When the Buddha spoke this sutra, the devas, nagas, yakshas, the four classes of disciples, and the Sangha of bhikshus all generated great merit and virtue, up to the complete offering, wishing that all sentient beings could, according to their wishes, receive the corresponding rewards.
After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, all those present were delighted and bowed in reverence.
