比丘避女惡名欲自殺經

西晉沙門法炬譯

如是我聞:

一時佛住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,時有異比丘,在拘薩羅人間住一林中。時彼比丘與長者婦女嬉戲,起惡名聲。時彼比丘作是念:「我今不應共他婦女起惡名聲,我今欲於此林中自殺!」

時彼林中,止住天神作是念:「惡、不善不類,此比丘不壞無過,而於林中欲自殺身,我今當往,方便開悟!」

時彼天神化作長者女身,語比丘言:「于諸巷路四衢道中,世間諸人,為我及汝起惡名聲言:『我與汝共相習近,作不正事。』已有惡名,今可還俗,共相娛樂。」

比丘答言:「以彼里巷四衢道中,為我與汝,起惡名聲,共相習近,為不正事。我今且自殺身。」

時彼天神還復天身,而說偈言:

「雖聞多惡名,  苦行者忍之,  不應苦自害,  亦不應起惱。  聞聲恐怖者,  是則林中獸,  是輕躁眾生,  不成出家法。  仁者當堪耐,  下中上惡聲,  執心堅住者,  是則出家法。  不由他人語,  令汝成劫賊,  亦不由他人,  令汝得羅漢;  如汝自知已,  諸天亦復知。

一時,佛陀住在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園(Jetavana Anathapindika-arama),當時有一位比丘(bhikkhu),住在拘薩羅(Kosala)人間的一片林中。那時,這位比丘與一位長者(householder)的婦女嬉戲,產生了不好的名聲。當時,這位比丘這樣想:『我不應該與他人的婦女嬉戲而產生不好的名聲,我現在想要在這片林中自殺!』

當時,在這片林中居住的天神(deva)這樣想:『這真是惡劣、不善的行為!這位比丘並沒有犯錯,卻想要在這片林中自殺,我現在應當前去,用方便法門開導他!』

當時,那位天神變化成一位長者的女兒,對比丘說:『在各個街巷和十字路口,世間的人們都在議論我和你,說:』我和你互相親近,做了不正當的事情。『既然已經有了不好的名聲,現在可以還俗,一起享樂。』

比丘回答說:『因為在那些街巷和十字路口,人們議論我和你,說我們互相親近,做了不正當的事情。我現在寧願自殺。』

『即使聽到很多惡名,苦行者(ascetic)也應當忍受,不應該痛苦地自我傷害,也不應該因此而惱怒。 聽到聲音就感到恐怖的人,就像是林中的野獸,是輕浮急躁的眾生,不能成就出家修行。 仁者應當能夠忍受,下等、中等、上等的各種惡名,內心堅定不動搖的人,才能成就出家修行。 不是因為他人之語,就能讓你成為劫賊,也不是因為他人之語,就能讓你證得阿羅漢(arahant); 正如你自己知道自己一樣,諸天(devas)也同樣知道。』

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of the Bhikkhu Who, Avoiding Evil Reputation with a Woman, Desired to Commit Suicide

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was residing in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti (Sravasti, Jetavana Anathapindika-arama). At that time, there was a certain bhikkhu (bhikkhu) dwelling in a forest in the land of Kosala (Kosala). Then, that bhikkhu was frolicking with the wife of a householder (householder), giving rise to an evil reputation. Then, that bhikkhu thought to himself: 'I should not have engaged in frolicking with another's wife, giving rise to an evil reputation. Now I desire to commit suicide in this forest!'

At that time, a deva (deva) dwelling in that forest thought to himself: 'This is evil, unwholesome, and inappropriate. This bhikkhu is without fault, yet he desires to commit suicide in this forest. Now I shall go forth and skillfully enlighten him!'

Then, that deva transformed himself into the form of a householder's daughter and said to the bhikkhu: 'In the streets and at the crossroads, the people of the world are spreading an evil reputation about me and you, saying: 'I and you are intimately acquainted, engaging in improper conduct.' Now that there is already an evil reputation, you may as well return to lay life and enjoy each other's company.'

The bhikkhu replied: 'Because in those streets and at the crossroads, people are spreading an evil reputation about me and you, saying that we are intimately acquainted, engaging in improper conduct, I would rather kill myself.'

Then, that deva reverted to his deva form and spoke in verse:

'Though hearing much evil reputation, the ascetic (ascetic) should endure it; one should not harm oneself in suffering, nor should one become agitated. One who is terrified by sound is like a beast in the forest; such a fickle being cannot accomplish the Dharma of renunciation. The virtuous one should be able to endure evil reputations of low, middle, and high degree; one who holds firm to their mind is practicing the Dharma of renunciation. It is not by the words of others that you become a robber, nor is it by the words of others that you attain Arhatship (arahant); Just as you know yourself, so too do the devas (devas) know.'


爾時比丘為彼天神所開悟已,專精思惟,斷除煩惱,得阿羅漢。
