The Bhikshu Ting Shi Sutra (Bhikshu Listening and Giving Sutra)

Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Tan Wu Lan of the Eastern Jin Dynasty from India

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in Śrāvastī (舍衛國), at the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍika-ārāma (祇樹給孤獨園).

At that time, there was a bhikshu who came to the lecture hall and said to the bhikshus: 'Venerable ones! I am now unable to comprehend the Dharma, I am very sleepy, I do not enjoy practicing the Way, and I doubt the scriptures.'

A bhikshu in the assembly immediately went to inform the Buddha: 'There is a bhikshu named Ting Shi (聽施), who came to the lecture hall and said to the bhikshus: 'I am now unable to comprehend the Dharma, I am very sleepy, I do not enjoy practicing the Way, and I doubt the scriptures.'

The Buddha then said: 'That bhikshu is foolish, he does not guard the gates of his senses (諸根門), he does not eat in moderation (少食), he does not diligently practice during the late hours of the night (不上夜后夜警順行), and he does not contemplate virtuous dharmas. How can he possibly comprehend the Dharma in this way? If he wishes to be free from sleep, enjoy practicing the Way, and not doubt the scriptures, Ting Shi will not achieve this through such means.'

The Buddha said to the bhikshus: 'Because he does not guard the gates of his senses, does not eat in moderation, does not diligently practice during the late hours of the night, and does not contemplate virtuous dharmas, how can he possibly comprehend the Dharma? If he wishes to be free from sleep, enjoy practicing the Way, and not doubt the scriptures, he will ultimately not achieve this through such means. If a bhikshu can guard the gates of his senses, eat in moderation, diligently practice during the late hours of the night, and contemplate virtuous dharmas, then he can comprehend the Dharma; if he wishes to be free from sleep, enjoy practicing the Way, and not doubt the scriptures, he can achieve this through these means.'

The Buddha told the bhikshus: 'Go and call Ting Shi here.'

That bhikshu then arose, prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet, and went to call Ting Shi. Ting Shi then came to the Buddha's place, prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet, and sat down. The Buddha then said: 'Ting Shi! Whatever you wish to say, speak it.'

Ting Shi said: 'I am now unable to comprehend the Dharma, I am very sleepy, I do not enjoy practicing the Way, and I doubt the scriptures.'

The Buddha said to Ting Shi: 'I wish to ask you about something...'

【English Translation】 English version: 『Hold onto the intention in your mind.』

The listener replied: 『As you command.』

The Buddha said: 『Once there were two people, traveling together on a road. One of them knew the way, and the other did not. The one who did not know the way then asked the one who knew the way, saying: 『I wish to go to a certain village, town, county, or country. I hope you can tell me which way to go.』 The one who knew the way then said: 『You follow this road, go straight to the right, and there will be two roads. Abandon the left road and take the right road. Go straight to the right for a while, and you will see a stream valley; at the stream valley, there should also be two roads. Abandon the left road and take the right road. Go straight to the right for a while, and you will see a cluster of trees; at the cluster of trees, there should also be two roads. Abandon the left road and take the right road. Go straight to the right for a while, and gradually you will reach the village, town, county, or country you wish to go to.』』

The Buddha said: 『You should understand that the parable I just gave encompasses all that is said, and you should carefully observe what is said. The one who does not know the way in the parable refers to the evil paths of the world, and also to the words spoken by those who accept evil teachings. The one who knows the way in the parable refers to the Tathagata (Buddha's title) unattached to perfect enlightenment, and also to those who accept perfect enlightenment.』

『The left road refers to the three evil thoughts of evil people: first, lustful thoughts; second, distracted thoughts; third, harmful thoughts; it also refers to wrong views, wrong thoughts, wrong speech, wrong intentions, wrong actions, wrong means, wrong aspirations, and wrong concentration.』

『The right road refers to the three good thoughts: first, the thought of renunciation; second, the thought of non-distraction; third, the thought of non-harming; it also refers to right view, right thought, right speech, right intention, right action, right means, right aspiration, and right concentration.』

『The two roads refer to people's doubts; the stream valley refers to anger; the cluster of trees refers to the five pleasures: first, the eyes delight in beautiful sights, and lustful desires can lead to attachment to beautiful things; second, the ears delight in sounds; third, the nose delights in fragrances; fourth, the tongue delights in flavors; fifth, the body delights in soft and delicate sensations, and lustful desires can lead to attachment to beautiful things.』

【English Translation】 English version: 『What is spoken of as gatherings, villages, counties, and countries refers to not considering active deeds as virtue.』

The Buddha told Ting Shi (Listening Giver): 『These are the deeds of all Buddhas. I speak of them because of my compassionate heart, wishing to deliver them. I have already pitied and grieved for them. Now, if they are doing these things, they should practice them wholeheartedly under a quiet tree, in a secluded place. If they are in the mountains, marshes, or among tombs, they should take fruits and melons as food. Bhikkhus (monks) should not be greedy for desires, for living in the world will bring regret later. These are the practices of all Buddhas, and also the teachings of all Buddhas.』

Now the Buddha has spoken these words, and the worthy Ting Shi (Listening Giver) rejoiced and contemplated what the Buddha had said.
