如是我聞:
一時,佛在王舍城迦蘭陀竹林精舍,與苾芻眾俱。
時有尊者名曰隨勇,在王舍城側尸陀林間,蛇聚孤峰之上大僧坊中,而獨經行。忽為毒蛇之所噬蠚,蛇之身形瘦細精光、猛惡可畏,如安惹那舍羅迦。即時,隨勇尊者呼苾芻眾謂言:「諸尊者!我為毒蛇之所噬蠚,膚體潰壞,今宜置我于僧坊外,無令延毒而複流散。」
是時,尊者舍利子去隨勇尊者所止不遠,在一樹下坐,聞彼隨勇發如是言,聞已即時往詣其所,到已謂言:「尊者隨勇!我向觀汝面及諸根,本無異相,何故今時乃發是聲?」
隨勇答言:「尊者!我為毒蛇之所噬蠚,膚體潰壞,今宜置我于僧坊外,無令延毒而複流散。
「尊者舍利子!若我取著,眼是我眼是我所;耳鼻舌身意是我,意是我所;色是我,色是我所;聲香味觸法是我,法是我所;地界是我,地界是我所;水火風空識界是我,識界是我所;色蘊是我,色蘊是我所;受想行識蘊是我,識蘊是我所;我若取著如是等法,面及諸根可有異相。

當時,有一位尊者名叫隨勇(Suyong),在王舍城旁的尸陀林(śītavana,墓地)間的蛇聚孤峰上的大僧坊中獨自經行。忽然被毒蛇咬傷,那蛇身形瘦小,精光閃爍,兇猛可怕,像安惹那舍羅迦(Anjanasaraka,一種毒蛇)。當時,隨勇尊者呼喚比丘眾說:『諸位尊者!我被毒蛇咬傷,面板潰爛,現在應該把我安置在僧坊外面,不要讓毒性蔓延擴散。』
這時,尊者舍利子(Śāriputra)離隨勇尊者所在的地方不遠,在一棵樹下坐著,聽到隨勇發出這樣的聲音,聽后立即前往他那裡,到達后說:『尊者隨勇!我剛才觀察你的面容和各種感官,本來沒有什麼異樣,為什麼現在發出這樣的聲音?』

『尊者舍利子!如果我執著于,眼睛是我的,眼睛是我所有的;耳朵、鼻子、舌頭、身體、意識是我的,意識是我所有的;色(rūpa,形態)是我的,色是我所有的;聲、香、味、觸、法(dharma,事物)是我的,法是我所有的;地界(earth element)是我的,地界是我所有的;水、火、風、空、識界(consciousness element)是我的,識界是我所有的;色蘊(rūpa-skandha,色聚集)是我的,色蘊是我所有的;受、想、行、識蘊(vedanā-skandha, saṃjñā-skandha, saṃskāra-skandha, vijñāna-skandha,感受、想法、行為、意識聚集)是我的,識蘊是我所有的;我如果執著于這些法,面容和各種感官可能會有異樣。』
【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks of the Suyong Venerable Sutra
Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Shihu, a Shramana bestowed with the Purple Robe, holding the title of Grand Master for Spreading the Dharma, Acting Vice President of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices, and Attendant of the Imperial Secretariat, from the Western Regions, under Imperial Decree.
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was in the Kalandaka Venuvana (Kalandaka Bamboo Grove Monastery) in Rājagṛha (Royal City), together with a community of bhikṣus (monks).
At that time, there was a venerable named Suyong (Brave Follower), who was alone practicing walking meditation in a large monastery located on the Solitary Peak of Snake Gathering in the Śītavana (cremation ground) near Rājagṛha. Suddenly, he was bitten by a venomous snake. The snake's body was thin and radiant, fierce and terrifying, like an Anjanasaraka (a type of venomous snake). Immediately, the Venerable Suyong called out to the community of bhikṣus, saying: 'Venerable ones! I have been bitten by a venomous snake, and my skin is decaying. Now, you should place me outside the monastery, lest the poison spread and diffuse.'
At this time, the Venerable Śāriputra (Sariputta) was not far from where the Venerable Suyong was, sitting under a tree. He heard Suyong utter these words, and upon hearing them, he immediately went to him. Having arrived, he said: 'Venerable Suyong! I just observed your face and faculties, and they were not different from usual. Why do you now utter such words?'
Suyong replied: 'Venerable one! I have been bitten by a venomous snake, and my skin is decaying. Now, you should place me outside the monastery, lest the poison spread and diffuse.'
'Venerable Śāriputra! If I were attached to the notion that the eye is mine, that the eye is what I possess; that the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are mine, that the mind is what I possess; that rūpa (form) is mine, that rūpa is what I possess; that sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharma (phenomena) are mine, that dharma is what I possess; that the earth element is mine, that the earth element is what I possess; that the water, fire, wind, space, and consciousness elements are mine, that the consciousness element is what I possess; that the rūpa-skandha (aggregate of form) is mine, that the rūpa-skandha is what I possess; that the vedanā-skandha, saṃjñā-skandha, saṃskāra-skandha, vijñāna-skandha (aggregates of feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness) are mine, that the vijñāna-skandha is what I possess; if I were attached to such things, my face and faculties might appear different.'
尊者舍利子!我不如是取著諸法,謂眼是我,眼是我所;乃至識蘊是我,識蘊是我所;今此何故面及諸根有是異相?」
舍利子言:「尊者隨勇!若我、我所見及我慢等斷取著已,復能了知所斷根本永斷無餘,如破多羅樹心不復更生,證無生法者,彼復何有異相可得?」
時尊者舍利子,以尊者隨勇置僧坊外,僵仆于地。
爾時尊者舍利子,即說伽陀曰:
「智者善行於梵行, 復常善修正道因, 臨舍壽時喜心生, 如重病人得輕差。 智者善行於梵行, 復常善修正道因, 臨舍壽時喜心生, 猶如棄置惡毒器。 智者善行於梵行, 復常善修正道因, 能穎脫于舍報時, 如人出離於火宅。 智行梵行修正道, 悉觀世間如草木, 都無義利無所成, 畢竟一切無繫著。」
爾時,尊者舍利子為隨勇尊者安置事已,往詣佛所,到已頭面禮世尊足,具陳上事。
佛言:「舍利子!彼隨勇善男子,若於爾時得聞我說勝妙伽陀及大明章句,彼定不為毒蛇所蠚,潰壞其身。」
舍利子白佛言:「世尊!何等勝妙伽陀?何等大明章句?愿為我說。」
爾時,世尊即說伽陀曰:
「持國天王我行慈, 愛啰嚩尾龍亦然, 阿說多哩劍末

『持國天王(Dhritarashtra)我行慈悲,愛啰嚩尾龍(Airavata)也是這樣,阿說多哩劍末(Asvatarikambal)
【English Translation】 English version: Venerable Sariputta! I do not thus take hold of phenomena, thinking 'The eye is me, the eye is mine'; even the consciousness aggregate is me, the consciousness aggregate is mine; now why is it that my face and faculties have such different appearances?'
Sariputta said: 'Venerable Suyungh! If views of 'I' and 'mine' and conceit, etc., have been abandoned and taken hold of, and one is further able to know that the root of what has been abandoned has been forever severed without remainder, like breaking the heartwood of a tala tree so that it does not grow again, one who has realized the unarisen dharma, what different appearance can be found in him?'
Then Venerable Sariputta, placed Venerable Suyungh outside the monastery, stiff and fallen to the ground.
At that time, Venerable Sariputta spoke this gatha:
'The wise practice well the holy life, and constantly cultivate the causes of the right path, When approaching the end of life, joy arises in their hearts, like a seriously ill person experiencing a slight recovery. The wise practice well the holy life, and constantly cultivate the causes of the right path, When approaching the end of life, joy arises in their hearts, like discarding a vessel filled with deadly poison. The wise practice well the holy life, and constantly cultivate the causes of the right path, When able to smoothly escape the time of abandoning the body, like a person escaping from a burning house. With wisdom, practice the holy life, cultivate the right path, Completely observe the world as grass and trees, Ultimately without meaning or benefit, without accomplishment, In the end, without any attachment.'
At that time, Venerable Sariputta, after arranging matters for Venerable Suyungh, went to the Buddha's place, and upon arriving, bowed his head to the World Honored One's feet, and fully recounted the above events.
The Buddha said: 'Sariputta! That good man Suyungh, if at that time he had heard me speak the supreme and wonderful gatha and the great luminous verses, he would certainly not have been bitten by a poisonous snake, causing his body to fester and decay.'
Sariputta said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One! What is the supreme and wonderful gatha? What are the great luminous verses? I wish you would explain them to me.'
At that time, the World Honored One spoke this gatha:
'Dhritarashtra (Dhritarashtra) the Heavenly King, I practice loving-kindness, Airavata (Airavata) the dragon also does so, Asvatarikambal (Asvatarikambal)
羅, 悉體埵子悉慈愛。 廣目天王我行慈, 黑瞿曇龍慈亦然, 難陀烏波難陀龍, 彼二行慈亦如是。 我于無足行慈愛, 二足四足亦復然, 及彼多足諸有情, 等行慈心悉無異。 一切龍等行慈愛, 彼龍棲止大海中, 于諸有情普慈心, 若情若器皆如是。 所有一切有情類, 乃至蜎飛及蠕動, 普愿銷除病惱因, 一切獲得安隱樂; 所有一切有情類, 乃至蜎飛及蠕動, 普以賢善平等觀, 一切蠲除諸罪惡。 蛇之為毒極猛熾, 其毒能壞人身命, 而彼蛇窟山峰中, 我常處之而游上。 我為無上世間師, 我常宣說真實語, 以我真實語業因, 我身蛇毒不能入。 所有貪瞋及癡法, 此三世間為大毒, 世尊大覺毒不侵, 佛真實力能破毒, 所有貪瞋及癡法, 此三世間為大毒, 世尊正法毒不侵, 法真實力能破毒; 所有貪瞋及癡法, 此三世間為大毒, 世尊凈眾毒不侵, 僧真實力能破毒, 世間所有諸毒中, 而彼貪毒最為上, 唯佛能破能攝持, 由斯諸毒皆息滅。」

【English Translation】 English version Ro, may all beings, including the offspring of Siddhattha (Siddhartha, referring to the Buddha), be filled with loving-kindness. Virupaksha (the Guardian King of the West) practices loving-kindness, as do the black Gotama dragons, Nanda (a Naga king) and Upananda (another Naga king), these two also practice loving-kindness in the same way. I extend loving-kindness to the footless, and likewise to the two-footed and four-footed, and to those many-footed sentient beings, equally practicing loving-kindness without difference. All dragons practice loving-kindness, those dragons dwelling in the great ocean, towards all sentient beings, universally with a compassionate heart, whether sentient or inanimate. All kinds of sentient beings, even those that fly and those that crawl, May they all eliminate the causes of sickness and suffering, and may all attain peaceful happiness; All kinds of sentient beings, even those that fly and those that crawl, May they all be regarded with virtuous and equal vision, and may all be freed from all sins and evils. The venom of snakes is extremely fierce, its poison can destroy a person's life, Yet in those snake caves and mountain peaks, I often dwell and wander above. I am the unsurpassed teacher of the world, I always proclaim truthful words, By the cause of my truthful speech and action, the poison of snakes cannot enter my body. 佛言:「舍利子!彼隨勇善男子!若於爾時得聞我說如是伽陀及大明章句,彼定不為蛇毒所蠚潰壞其身。」
舍利子白佛言:「世尊!如佛今說勝妙伽陀及此大明章句,彼隨勇苾芻蛇所蠚時,離於佛所,如是妙法其云何得?」
爾時,尊者舍利子說是語已,頭面著地禮世尊足,出於佛會。

當時,尊者舍利子(Śāriputra)說完這些話后,頭面觸地,禮拜世尊的足,然後離開了佛陀的集會。

【English Translation】 English version 『Doṅg mī lǐ (引)(three), Doṅg mí (引)(four), Ba la (two combined) Doṅg mí (引)(five), Nà zhì (引)(six), Sū nà zhì (引)(seven), Jì (引) wa zhì (引)(eight), Mǔ nà yì (引)(nine), Sà sān mó yì (引)(ten), Nán dì (引)(eleven), Nán dǐ lǐ (引)(twelve), Ní (引) lǐ (引)(thirteen), Ní (引) luó jì (引) shī (引)(fourteen), Wá (引) lǐ (引)(fifteen), Wá (引) luó jì (引) shī (引)(sixteen), Wū lǐ (引)(seventeen), Ní yáng (two combined) yú (引) lǐ (引) suō (引) hè (引)(eighteen).』
The Buddha said: 『Śāriputra! If that Suíyǒng good man hears me speak such a gāthā (verse) and dhāraṇī (great bright verses) at that time, he will certainly not have his body ulcerated and destroyed by snake venom.』
Śāriputra said to the Buddha: 『World Honored One! As the Buddha now speaks of the excellent and wonderful gāthā (verse) and this great bright dhāraṇī (verses), if that Suíyǒng bhikṣu (monk) is bitten by a snake and is away from the Buddha's presence, how can he obtain such a wonderful Dharma?』
At that time, the venerable Śāriputra, after saying these words, touched the ground with his head and face, prostrated at the feet of the World Honored One, and departed from the Buddha's assembly.
