【English Translation】 English version The Kandaraka King Sutra
Translated by An Shih-kao, a Tripitaka Master from Parthia during the Later Han Dynasty
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti, with twelve hundred and fifty Bhikshus.
At that time, there was a king named Kandaraka, who served Brahmins. The Brahmins lived in the mountains and grew many fruit trees.
Once, a woodcutter damaged their fruit trees. When the Brahmins saw this, they brought him to the king and said, 'This person is unruly and has ruined my fruit trees. The king should punish him by death.' The king respected the Brahmins and dared not disobey them, so he killed the one who damaged the trees.
Not long after, an ox ate someone's rice. The owner chased and beat the ox, breaking one of its horns, causing blood to flow down its face, and the pain was unbearable. The ox went directly to the king and reported, 'I was indeed wrong to eat a little of this person's rice, but now I have been beaten and had my horn broken.' The owner of the rice also followed to the king's place. The king understood the language of birds and beasts and told the ox, 'I shall punish him by death for you.' The ox immediately replied, 'Even if you kill this person now, it will not stop my pain. Just warn him not to treat people like he treated me in the future.'
The king then felt remorse and said, 'I serve the Brahmins, and just because of a few fruit trees, I have killed a person; I am not as good as this ox.' He then called the Brahmins and asked, 'What blessings can be obtained by serving this path?'
The Brahmins replied, 'One can avert disasters and bring about happiness, wealth, and longevity.'
The king then asked, 'Can one be freed from birth and death?'
They replied, 'One cannot be freed from birth and death.'
The king thought to himself, 'I should not take this path as my practice.' He then ordered his ministers to prepare the carriage and went to the Buddha's place, prostrated himself on the ground, paid homage to the Buddha, and said, 'I have heard that the Buddha's path is the most supreme, and the teachings are magnificent, revered by all under heaven...'

【English Translation】 English version: Having crossed over countless beings, he is willing to receive the Buddha's teachings to change his behavior.' The Buddha then imparted to the king the Five Precepts and the Ten Virtuous Actions, and explained to him that all things in heaven and earth, including people, are neither born nor die. The king prostrated himself before the Buddha with his head and face touching the ground, and said to the Buddha, 'Now that I observe the precepts you have taught, what blessings shall I receive?' The Buddha said, 'Giving and upholding the precepts bring blessings in this life; patience, diligence, one-mindedness, and wisdom bring immeasurable merit. After death, one can ascend to the heavens, become a Chakravarti-raja (wheel-turning king), or attain the path of non-action to liberate the world.' The Buddha then manifested his majestic and radiant form for the king. The king was immediately filled with joy and understanding, and attained the path of Srotapanna (stream-enterer). Ananda (one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha) adjusted his robes, prostrated himself before the Buddha with his head and face touching the ground, and said to the Buddha, 'What is the karmic connection between this king and the ox? The king understands the ox's words, and (the ox) abandoned Brahmanism (Brahman) and embraced the Buddha's path. (The king) saw the Buddha, heard the Dharma, and immediately attained the path.' The Buddha said, 'In the past, during the time of Konagamana Buddha (one of the past seven Buddhas), the king and the ox were brothers, and together they became Upasakas (lay male devotees), observing the fast for one day and one night. The king diligently upheld the precepts without懈怠, and after his life ended, he ascended to the heavens. After his life in the heavens ended, he was reborn as a king. The ox broke the fast by eating at night, and later suffered the consequences. After the consequences ended, he was reborn as an ox. After hundreds of lifetimes, he still retained memories of his past life, so he came to enlighten the king's mind. The ox, seven days later, after his life ended, also ascended to the heavens.' The Buddha said, 'Fourfold disciples (Bhikshus, Bhikshunis, Upasakas, Upasikas)! The precepts of fasting must not be violated.' The Bhikshus (ordained monks), Bhikshunis (ordained nuns), Upasakas (lay male devotees), Upasikas (lay female devotees), Devas (gods), Nagas (a type of mythical creature), and spirits, hearing the sutra, rejoiced and bowed to the Buddha before departing.
