The Buddha Speaks of the Ajatasattu Sutra
Translated by Layman Zhi Qian of the Yuezhi Kingdom of Wu
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was in Mount Gijjhakuta in the city of Rajagriha. Gods, dragons (Naga, deities in Buddhism), ghosts, spirits, emperors, kings, ministers, and common people all went to the Buddha's abode, performing obeisance, receiving the teachings, and making offerings, without failing in any aspect of etiquette. Devadatta (Buddha's cousin who later became his rival), seeing this, felt immeasurable jealousy and turned to Prince Ajatasattu (son of King Bimbisara) and said, 'Your father is using the country's many treasures to offer to the Buddha and all the Sramanas (ascetics), and the national treasury is about to be emptied. You should plan this matter early and ascend the throne as king. I will raise an army to attack the Buddha. You become the king, and I will become the Buddha. Both of us will get what we want, isn't that good! You must succeed.'
After Ajatasattu formed this conspiracy with Devadatta, he ordered the powerful ministers to mobilize the troops: 'When the king returns, seize his seal and put him in prison.' When the king returned, the ministers followed the order and imprisoned the king.
The king's mind was peaceful and serene, considering it as the retribution for past karma, and he felt no fear in his heart, firmly believing in the Buddha's words. The king said, 'What fault have I committed that I am being punished like this?'
The queen, nobles, and all the officials, high and low, throughout the country were filled with sorrow. The king turned to those who were weeping and said, 'The Buddha said that heaven and earth, the sun and moon, Mount Sumeru (the sacred mountain in Buddhist cosmology), and the oceans have a beginning and an end. The prosperous will decline, the united will separate, and the born will surely die. Because of these sorrows and grief, one will endlessly transmigrate in the cycle of rebirth, leading to profound suffering. Tracing its origin and examining its beginning, when conditions come together, there is arising, which is called birth; when conditions disperse, there is cessation, which is called emptiness. This body is merely composed of the four great elements (earth, water, fire, and wind), and the souls of beings reside within it. After death, it returns to its original source, and the soul departs empty, which is called non-self. Even the body cannot be preserved, so how can a country be eternally guarded! When the Buddha first came to our country, I did not yet have a son. The Buddha asked me, 'Do you know if you will have a king in the future?' I replied, 'I do not know.' The World-Honored One (a title for Shakyamuni Buddha) solemnly said, 'Everything is impermanent. You must contemplate this carefully.' The Buddha's warning to me was precisely for today. Each of you must strive hard!'
【English Translation】 English version: 『Jianzhi, keep the Buddha's precepts in mind.』
The king said to the prince: 『Every time you are sick, I am worried and anxious, wishing to risk my life to save you from danger. The benevolence and kindness of parents are surpassed only by Heaven. What is in your heart that you can bear to commit such a rebellious and evil act? Those who kill their parents will fall into Tai Mountain (Mount Tai) hell after death, without end or rest; you will bear this consequence. I am your father, you should respect me. Even valuing filial piety, I fear that my name does not match my actions, how much more so killing your father! I intend to give the kingdom to you, and then go to the Buddha to become a Shramana (Buddhist monk). I view lust as if it were a fire burning my body. The beauty of women is like empty space, and those without wisdom are invariably deluded by it! Only by reading the Buddhist scriptures can one see the falseness and evil of women, and understand the harm that glory and profit bring to the body.』
The prince said: 『Do not say more. I have obtained my long-cherished wish, how can there be any pardon!』
He ordered the prison warden: 『Cut off his food and drink, and starve him to death.』
As the prison warden was about to enter the prison, King Ping Sha (Pingsha King) faced the direction where the Buddha was, bowed deeply and said: 『My son has committed an evil that is intolerable to Heaven and Earth, but I have not a trace of resentment in my heart towards him. I only hope that the Buddha's teachings will continue to spread: there is no eternal happiness in the world, and suffering will be long-lasting.』 After saying this, he entered the prison, let down his hair, and cried out to the sky: 『Painful! Is this the way of Heaven!』
The consorts, nobles, and all the people of the kingdom, both great and small, were in mourning and grief. The queen said to the prince: 『The great king is wearing shackles, confined in prison, and needs others to take care of him when sitting or lying down; the pain is indescribable. Since you were born, the great king has been sincere to you, constantly concerned about you, never forgetting you while eating or sleeping. When his body is slightly unwell, he stays by your side, shedding tears for you, his heart burning with anxiety, his body withered, wishing to give his own life to die in your place. You should remember the nurturing grace of Heaven and your parents, and do not commit such a rebellious act. The Buddha said in the scriptures: 『The greatest of good is none greater than filial piety; the greatest of evil is probably harming one's parents!』 When the young respect the old, Heaven will bless them, how much more so filial piety towards parents! You follow your cruel and violent heart, committing such a grave evil, and will surely fall into Tai Mountain hell. Sixty billion years in the world is equivalent to one day and one night in Tai Mountain hell, and the various sufferings experienced there, each one lasts for countless years. You will have to endure all of these, is it not difficult! Those who seek momentary pleasure will all regret it.』
」
【English Translation】 English version The prince said, 'I have had the ambition to kill my father and become king since I was young. Today my wish is fulfilled, what is there to advise!' The queen said, 'Not listening to advice is the foundation of a country's downfall! I want to see the Great King, may I?' The prince said, 'You may.' The queen purified herself with bathing, smeared her body with honey and roasted flour, and went to see the Great King. His face was thin and emaciated, unrecognizable. She raised a lament, and those who heard it could not help but shed tears. The queen said, 'The Buddha said that glory and joy are impermanent, but sin and suffering are constant.' The king said, 'The prison guards have cut off my food, and I have been hungry and thirsty for a long time. My body has eighty thousand pores, and each pore has hundreds of kinds of insects, disturbing my abdomen. My flesh and blood are almost exhausted, and my life is coming to an end!' He said, choking with sobs, his breath 끊어졌다 and then resumed. The queen said, 'I have learned of your difficulties in detail. I have smeared my body with roasted flour and honey, you can eat it. You must remember the Buddha's teachings and not neglect them.' After the king finished eating, he faced the direction where the Buddha was, choked with sobs, and prostrated himself, saying, 'The Buddha said that glory and blessings are difficult to maintain, like illusions and dreams, truly as you have taught.' He said to the queen, 'When I was king, the country was vast, and I had plenty of food and clothing. But now I am in prison, about to starve to death. Where did your son learn such rebellious ways, violating the Buddha's teachings of benevolence. I am not afraid of death, but I only regret not being able to personally listen to the Buddha's pure teachings, and discuss the profound mysteries of the Dharma with Sariputra (Sariputra, one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, known for his wisdom), Maudgalyayana (Maudgalyayana, one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, known for his supernatural powers), and Mahakasyapa (Mahakasyapa, one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, known for his ascetic practices).' The king said to the queen again, 'The Buddha said that love and affection are like birds gathering on a tree, each scattering in the morning, according to their karma. Maudgalyayana (Maudgalyayana) has already removed all defilements, eliminated all evils, and obtained the six supernormal powers and the four kinds of unobstructed eloquence, yet he was still beaten by greedy and jealous Brahmins, let alone me! Evil follows people like a shadow follows the body, and an echo responds to a sound. It is difficult to encounter the Buddha, difficult to hear the divine teachings, the virtuous Sangha's conduct is noble, and their demeanor is immeasurable, which cannot be practiced by worldly Confucians. Cherishing the Buddha's scriptures, using benevolence to transform the people; obtaining the blessings of offerings, receiving the Buddha's pure teachings, is truly difficult to encounter! I am dying now! My spirit is about to depart. If you want to establish aspirations, there is nothing better than Buddhism. You must carefully guard it, and prevent'
世尊(The World-Honored One)再次說道:『我現在是如來(Tathagata)、無所著(free from attachments)、正真道(the path of truth)、最正覺(perfect enlightenment)、道法御(controller of the Dharma)、天人師(teacher of gods and humans),三千大千世界的日月天神、鬼龍沒有不叩頭的。
【English Translation】 English version: 'Calamity has come!' Later, upon hearing the king's admonition, he grieved and wept even more bitterly.
The prince questioned the prison warden, saying, 'It has been many days since the king's food was cut off, why hasn't he died?' The warden replied, 'The queen enters the prison and provides offerings of parched flour and honey to prolong the king's life.' The prince said, 'From now on, do not allow the queen to see the king.'
The king was hungry, and with effort, he turned towards the direction where the Buddha (Buddha) was and bowed his head. Immediately, he no longer felt hungry, and the night became bright. Upon hearing this, the prince ordered the windows to be blocked and the soles of his feet to be cut off, so that he could not rise and see the light of the Buddha. The officials then cut off the soles of his feet. The pain was immeasurable, but he did not forget to remember the Buddha in his heart.
The Buddha (Buddha) spoke the following sutra from afar: 'Good and evil deeds, misfortune and blessings, ultimately return to oneself. How can one not be cautious!'
King Bimbisara (King Bimbisara) replied, 'Even if my body were to be dismembered, cut into pieces inch by inch, I would ultimately not generate evil thoughts.'
The World-Honored One (The World-Honored One) said again, 'I am now the Tathagata (Tathagata), free from attachments, the path of truth, perfect enlightenment, the controller of the Dharma, the teacher of gods and humans. The sun, moon, gods, demons, and dragons of the three thousand great thousand worlds all bow their heads. The remaining karmic consequences of past deeds cannot be avoided even now, let alone for ordinary people!'
King Bimbisara (King Bimbisara) received the grace of the highest among the gods (the highest among the gods), fully saw his past sins, dared not resent, and was not afraid of the punishment of being burned and boiled in the mountains. His heart was only on the Buddha (Buddha) and all the disciples. Whether sitting or lying down, he dared not be negligent. He immediately put his palms together and bowed his head: 'Today my life ends, forever freed from divine transformations.' Sobbing and choking, he soon breathed his last. All the ministers and people of the country stamped their feet and beat their chests, crying out to the heavens. King Bimbisara (King Bimbisara) immediately attained the path, was reborn in the heavens, the doors of the three evil realms were closed, and all suffering was extinguished!
The Buddha (Buddha) speaks the Sutra of Unborn Hatred.
