聞如是:
一時,佛在羅閱祇國耆阇崛山中。
時阿阇世王請佛,飯食已訖,佛還祇洹。王與祇婆議曰:「今日請佛,佛飯已竟,更復所宜?」祇婆言:「惟多然燈也。」於是王乃敕具百斛麻油膏,從宮門至祇洹精舍。
時有貧窮老母,常有至心欲供養佛而無資財,見王作此功德乃更感激,行乞得兩錢,以至麻油家買膏。膏主曰:「母人大貧窮,乞得兩錢,何不買食以自連繼,用此膏為?」
母曰:「我聞佛生難值,百劫一遇。我幸逢佛世而無供養,今日見王作大功德,巍巍無量激起我意,雖實貧窮故欲然一燈,為後世根本者也。」
於是膏主知其至意,與兩錢膏應得二合,特益三合凡得五合。母則往,當佛前然之。心計此膏不足半夕,乃自誓言:「若我後世得道如佛,膏當通夕光明不消。」作禮而去。
王所然燈或滅、或盡,雖有人侍恒不周匝;老母所然一燈,光明特朗,殊勝諸燈通夕不滅,膏又不盡。至明朝旦,母復來前頭面作禮,叉手卻住。

於是油膏店主知道她心意真誠,用兩文錢的價錢給了她應得的兩合油膏,又額外加了三合,總共給了五合。老婦人就拿著油膏到佛陀面前點燃。她心裡想著這些油膏恐怕不到半夜就會燒完,於是自己發誓說:『如果我後世能夠得道成佛,這盞燈應當徹夜光明不滅。』說完,她行禮后離開了。
阿阇世王所點的燈,有的熄滅了,有的燒盡了,即使有人侍候著,也不能周全;而老婦人所點的一盞燈,光明特別明亮,勝過所有的燈,徹夜不滅,油膏也沒有燒盡。到第二天早晨,老婦人又來到佛陀面前,頂禮佛陀,合掌站立在一旁。

【English Translation】 English version The Ājātaśatru's Prophecy Sutra
Translated by the Śrāmaṇa Dharmarakṣa of the Western Jin Dynasty
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was in Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak) in the city of Rāmagṛha (Rajgir).
At that time, King Ajātaśatru (King of Magadha) invited the Buddha for a meal. After the meal, the Buddha returned to Jetavana (Jeta Grove). King Ajātaśatru consulted with Jīvaka (the royal physician), saying, 'Today I invited the Buddha for a meal. What else should be done?' Jīvaka said, 'It would be best to light many lamps.' Thereupon, the king ordered the preparation of one hundred hu (a unit of volume) of sesame oil, to be lit from the palace gate to the Jetavana Monastery.
At that time, there was a poor old woman who always sincerely desired to make offerings to the Buddha but had no wealth. Seeing the king performing such great merit, she was even more moved. She begged and obtained two coins, and went to the sesame oil shop to buy oil. The oil shop owner said, 'Old woman, you are so poor, having begged to get two coins. Why not buy some food to sustain yourself? What are you doing buying oil with these coins?'
The old woman said, 'I have heard that it is difficult to encounter the birth of a Buddha, occurring once in a hundred kalpas (aeons). I am fortunate to have encountered the Buddha in this world but have no means to make offerings. Today, seeing the king performing such great merit, I am deeply moved. Although I am truly poor, I wish to light a lamp as a root of goodness for future lives.'
Thereupon, the oil shop owner, knowing her sincere intention, gave her two he (a unit of volume) of oil for the price of two coins, and added an extra three he, giving her a total of five he. The old woman then went and lit the lamp before the Buddha. Thinking that this oil would probably not last half the night, she made a vow, saying, 'If I attain enlightenment like the Buddha in a future life, may this lamp shine brightly throughout the night without being extinguished.' After speaking, she paid her respects and left.
The lamps lit by King Ajātaśatru either went out or were exhausted, and even with attendants, they could not be fully maintained. The single lamp lit by the old woman shone with extraordinary brightness, surpassing all the other lamps, lasting throughout the night without being extinguished, and the oil was not exhausted. The next morning, the old woman came before the Buddha again, bowed her head to the ground in reverence, and stood aside with her palms together.

佛告目連:「止!止!此當來佛之光明功德,非汝威神所毀滅。此母宿命供養百八十億佛已,從前佛受決,務以經法教授開化人民,未暇修檀,故今貧窮無有財寶。卻後三十劫,功德成滿當得作佛,號曰須彌燈光如來、至真,世界無有日月,人民身中皆有大光,宮室眾寶光明相照如忉利天上。」
老母聞決歡喜,即時輕舉身升虛空,去地百八十丈,來下頭面作禮而去。
王聞之,問祇婆曰:「我作功德巍巍如此,而佛不與我決;此母然一燈便受決。何以爾也?」
祇婆曰:「王所作雖多,心不專一,不如此母注心于佛也。」乃更往請佛。宿敕諸園監,各令晨採好華,早送入宮至中。
佛便晨出祇洹,徐徐緩行,隨道為人民說法,投日中至宮。有一園監持華適出園巷,正與佛會於大道之衢,聞佛說經一心歡喜,即以所持華悉散佛上,花皆住于空中當佛頭上。佛即授決曰:「汝已供養九十億佛,卻後百四十劫,汝當爲佛,號曰覺華如來。」其人歡喜,即時輕舉身升虛空,來下作禮畢,即更自念:「我王為人性大嚴急,故宿敕我齋戒

【English Translation】 English version Then they extinguished all the lamps, and the lamps were all extinguished, except for this old woman's one lamp, which did not go out even after being blown out three times. So, she raised her kasaya (monk's robe) to fan it, and the light of the lamp became even brighter. Then, using his supernatural power, he guided the winds to blow out the lamps one by one, but the old woman's lamp became even more vigorous, shining upwards to the Brahma Heaven (highest heaven in Buddhist cosmology), and sideways illuminating the three thousand worlds, so that all could see its light. The Buddha told Maudgalyayana (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, known for his supernatural powers): 'Stop! Stop! This is the light of the future Buddha's merit and virtue, which cannot be destroyed by your supernatural power. This old woman has already made offerings to one hundred and eighty billion Buddhas in her past lives, and has received predictions from past Buddhas. She is dedicated to teaching and enlightening the people with the scriptures, and has not had time to practice charity, so she is now poor and has no wealth. After thirty kalpas (an immense period of time), her merits will be fulfilled, and she will become a Buddha, named Sumeru Light Tathagata (one of the titles of a Buddha), the Perfectly Enlightened One. In that world, there will be no sun or moon, and the people will all have great light within their bodies. The palaces and treasures will shine with light, like the Trayastrimsa Heaven (one of the six heavens of desire in Buddhism).' The old woman heard the prediction and rejoiced. Immediately, she lightly lifted her body and ascended into the sky, one hundred and eighty fathoms above the ground, came down, prostrated herself, and departed. The king heard of this and asked Jivaka (a famous physician in ancient India): 'I have performed such great meritorious deeds, and yet the Buddha does not give me a prediction; this old woman lights one lamp and receives a prediction. Why is this so?' Jivaka said: 'Although the king has done many meritorious deeds, his mind is not focused, unlike this old woman who is focused on the Buddha.' So, he went again to invite the Buddha. The king had previously ordered the garden supervisors to pick good flowers every morning and send them to the palace early. The Buddha then went out of Jetavana (also known as the Jetavana Monastery, one of the main residences of the Buddha during his lifetime) in the morning, walking slowly, preaching the Dharma to the people along the way, and arrived at the palace near noon. A garden supervisor, carrying flowers, was just coming out of the garden lane, and met the Buddha at the crossroads of the road. Hearing the Buddha preach the Dharma, he was overjoyed, and scattered all the flowers he was carrying on the Buddha. The flowers all stayed in the air, above the Buddha's head. The Buddha then gave him a prediction, saying: 'You have already made offerings to ninety billion Buddhas, and after one hundred and forty kalpas, you shall become a Buddha, named Awakened Flower Tathagata.' That person rejoiced, immediately lightly lifted his body and ascended into the sky, came down, finished prostrating, and then thought to himself: 'My king is very strict and impatient, so he ordered me in advance to fast
將華,當以供佛,而我悉自以上佛,空手而往,必當殺我。」便徑歸家,置空華箱于戶外,入告婦言:「我朝來未食,王今當殺我,急為具食。」
婦聞大惶,懅曰:「王何故相殺?」便為婦本末說之。婦即出,至灶下具食,天帝釋便以天華滿空箱中。婦持食還,見戶外箱中華滿如故,光色非凡,即以告夫。夫出戶視,知是天花,心大歡喜,止不復食便持華入。
王適出迎佛,道與王相逢。王見華大好,世間希有,即問監曰:「我園中大有此好華乃爾,而汝前後不送上,汝罪應死,寧知之不?」
監曰:「大王!園中無有此華。臣朝早將園華道路逢佛,不勝歡喜,盡以上佛,即授與我決。知當殺故,過家索食,比其頃出視空箱中,復見此華;必是天華,非園所有。今我生既卑賤,為王守園,拘制縣官不得行道;一已授決,正爾而死,必生天上,十方佛前無所拘制,可得恣意行道。王若相殺,我無所在也。」
王聞授決,便生慚怖,肅然毛豎,即起作禮,長跪懺悔。佛至宮,飯食已訖,咒愿而去。
王復問祇婆曰:「我前請佛,而老母受決;今日設福,而園監受決;我獨何故初無所獲?心甚於悒,當復宜作何等功德耶?」
祇婆曰:「王雖頻日設福,但用國藏之財,使人民之力,

【English Translation】 English version: 'If I use these flowers to offer to the Buddha, and I go to the king empty-handed, he will surely kill me.' So he went straight home, placed the empty flower box outside the door, and went inside to tell his wife, 'I haven't eaten this morning, and the king is about to kill me, quickly prepare food for me.' His wife was very alarmed and said fearfully, 'Why would the king kill you?' He then told his wife the whole story. The wife immediately went out to the stove to prepare food, and then Devanam Indra (天帝釋) filled the empty box with heavenly flowers. The wife returned with the food and saw that the flowers in the box outside the door were as full as before, with extraordinary radiance, and told her husband. The husband went out to look and knew they were heavenly flowers, and he was very happy. He stopped eating and took the flowers into the palace. The king happened to be going out to greet the Buddha and met him on the road. The king saw that the flowers were very beautiful and rare in the world, and asked the garden supervisor, 'My garden actually has such beautiful flowers, and you haven't sent them up before, you deserve to die, do you know that?' The garden supervisor said, 'Great King! There are no such flowers in the garden. I offered the flowers from the garden to the Buddha on the road early this morning, and I was very happy. I offered them all to the Buddha, and the Buddha gave me a prediction (vyākaraṇa 授記). I knew I was going to be killed, so I went home to get something to eat. When I came out to look at the empty box, I saw these flowers again; these must be heavenly flowers, not from the garden. Now that I am born lowly, guarding the garden for the king, and being restrained by the government, I cannot practice; once I receive the prediction, even if I die, I will surely be born in heaven, without restraint before the Buddhas of the ten directions, and I can practice at will. If the king wants to kill me, I don't care.' When the king heard about the prediction, he felt ashamed and fearful, and he stood up respectfully, his hair standing on end. He immediately got up, bowed, and knelt down to repent. The Buddha arrived at the palace, finished his meal, and left after offering blessings. The king then asked Jivaka (耆婆), 'When I invited the Buddha before, it was my old mother who received the prediction; today, when I set up offerings, it was the garden supervisor who received the prediction; why am I the only one who has not received anything? I am very depressed, what kind of merit should I do?' Jivaka said, 'Although the king often sets up offerings, he uses the wealth of the country and the labor of the people...'
心或貢高、意或瞋恚,故未得決。今宜割損身中自供之具,並脫瓔珞七寶珠環以作寶華,當與夫人、太子併力合掌,自就功勤一心上佛,佛照王至誠必得決也。」
於是王減徹廚膳晝夜齋戒,脫身上諸寶,合聚諸師曰前作華,王及夫人、太子皆自著手,至九十日所作悉成,敕外駕當往上佛。傍臣白言:「聞佛前到鳩夷那竭國,已般泥洹也。」
王聞心大悲號,涕淚哽咽曰:「我故至心手作此華,佛雖般泥洹,我故當赍詣耆阇崛山,以上佛坐處,展馳我意也。」
祇婆曰:「佛者,無身亦無泥洹,亦不常住無滅無在;惟至心者為得見佛,佛雖在世間,無至心者為不見佛,大王至誠乃爾,佛雖般泥洹,往必見佛。」
便至耆阇崛山中,見佛且悲且喜,垂淚而進,頭面作禮,以七寶華前散佛上,華皆住空中化成寶蓋正當佛上,佛便授與王決曰:「卻後八萬劫,劫名喜觀,王當爲佛,佛號凈其所部如來,剎土名華王,時人民壽四十小劫。」
阿阇世王太子,名旃陀和利,時年八歲,見父授決甚大歡喜,即脫身上眾寶以散佛上曰:「愿凈其所部作佛時,我作金輪聖王得供養佛,佛般泥洹后,我當承續為佛。」其所散寶,化為交露帳正覆佛上。
佛言:「必如汝愿,王為佛時必當作金輪聖王

【English Translation】 English version: The king thought, 'My heart is perhaps arrogant, and my mind is perhaps filled with anger, which is why I have not been able to reach a decision. Now, I should reduce my personal provisions and take off my necklaces and seven-jeweled ornaments to make precious flowers. I should join hands with the queen and the prince, and with utmost sincerity, offer these to the Buddha. The Buddha will surely see my sincerity and grant me a resolution.' Therefore, the king reduced his meals, fasted day and night, and removed all the jewels from his body. He gathered artisans to make precious flowers. The king, queen, and prince all participated in the making. After ninety days, the precious flowers were finally completed. The king ordered the carriages to be prepared to go and offer them to the Buddha. At this time, a minister reported, 'I heard that the Buddha has already gone to Kushinagar (Kushinagar, an ancient Indian city) and has already entered Parinirvana (Parinirvana, a Buddhist term referring to the death of a Buddha or Arhat).' Upon hearing this, the king felt immense sorrow in his heart and wept loudly, choked with sobs, saying, 'I have made these precious flowers with such sincerity and with my own hands. Even if the Buddha has entered Parinirvana, I will still take them to Grdhrakuta (Grdhakuta, also known as Vulture Peak, a place where Shakyamuni Buddha often taught), and offer them where the Buddha once sat, to express my intentions.' Jivaka (Jivaka, a famous physician) said, 'The Buddha has no fixed form, nor is there a true Parinirvana. The Buddha is neither permanently abiding nor completely annihilated, nor does the Buddha exist in a fixed place. Only those with utmost sincerity can see the Buddha. Although the Buddha is in the world, those without sincerity cannot see the Buddha. Your Majesty is so sincere that even if the Buddha has entered Parinirvana, you will surely see the Buddha if you go.' Thus, the king and his entourage arrived at Grdhrakuta Mountain. Upon seeing the Buddha, they were filled with both sorrow and joy, and with tears in their eyes, they walked forward, prostrated themselves with their heads touching the ground, and scattered the seven-jeweled flowers upon the Buddha. All the flowers remained in the air, transforming into a jeweled canopy directly above the Buddha. The Buddha then prophesied to the king, saying, 'After eighty thousand kalpas (kalpas, an immense period of time in Buddhist cosmology), the kalpa will be named Joyful Vision, and you will become a Buddha, with the Buddha name Pure Land Buddha (Buddha with a Pure Land). The Buddha-field will be named Flower King, and the lifespan of the people at that time will be forty small kalpas.' King Ajatasattu's (Ajatasattu, King of Magadha in ancient India) prince, named Candahori (Candahori), was only eight years old at the time. Seeing his father receive the prophecy, he was very happy and immediately took off the many jewels from his body and scattered them upon the Buddha, saying, 'May I, when I become a Buddha in the Pure Land, be a Chakravarti (Chakravarti, an ideal ruler who possesses the wheel of dominion over the world), and be able to offer to the Buddha. After the Buddha enters Parinirvana, I will inherit the Buddha's legacy.' The jewels he scattered transformed into a net-like canopy, covering the Buddha. The Buddha said, 'It will surely be as you wish. When you become a Buddha, he will surely be a Chakravarti.'
,壽終便上生兜率天上,壽盡便下作佛,在藥王剎土教授,佛號栴檀,人民壽命國土所有,皆如凈其所部。」
佛時授決適竟,王及旃陀和利前為佛作禮,便㸌然不見佛所在。

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本:壽命終結后便往生到兜率天(Tushita Heaven),在兜率天的壽命結束后便下生到人間成佛,在藥王剎土(Bhaisajyaraja Buddha-field)教化眾生,佛號為栴檀(Chandana),那裡的人民壽命和國土的一切,都如同清凈的佛土一樣。」
佛陀當時授記完畢,國王阿阇世(Ajatasattu)和旃陀和利(Chandahali)上前向佛陀頂禮,隨即霍然之間,佛陀便消失不見了。

【English Translation】 English version: 'Upon the end of his life, he will be reborn in Tushita Heaven (Tushita Heaven), and when his lifespan there is exhausted, he will descend to become a Buddha, teaching in the Bhaisajyaraja Buddha-field (Bhaisajyaraja Buddha-field), with the Buddha-name Chandana (Chandana). The lifespan of the people and all aspects of that land will be like those of a pure Buddha-field.'
When the Buddha had finished giving the prediction, King Ajatasattu (Ajatasattu) and Chandahali (Chandahali) stepped forward to bow to the Buddha, and then suddenly, the Buddha vanished from sight.
