如是我聞:

一時,佛住王舍城耆阇崛山中,與大比丘眾俱。爾時,世尊光明韑韑,喻若日出照明世間。

時,舍夷國王名曰凈飯——治以正法,禮德仁義,常行慈心——時被重病,身中四大,同時俱作,殘害其體,支節慾解,喘息不定,如駃水流。輔相宣令國中明醫,皆悉集會,瞻王所疾,隨病授藥,種種療治,無能愈者,瑞應已至,將死不久。

時王煩躁,轉側不停,如少水魚,夫人、婇女見其如是,益更愁惱。

時白飯王、斛飯王、大稱王等,及諸群臣同發聲言:「今王設崩,永失覆護,國將虛弱。」王身戰動,唇口乾燥,語聲數絕,眩目淚下。時諸王等,皆以敬意,長跪叉手,同共白言:「大王素性,不好作惡,經彈指頃,積德無厭,護養人民,莫不得安,名聞十方。大王今日,何故愁惱?」

時凈飯王,語聲輒出,告諸王曰:「我命雖逝,不以為苦,但恨不見我子悉達、又恨不見次子難陀,以除貪淫世間諸欲;復恨不見斛飯王子阿難陀者,持佛法藏,一言不失;又恨不見孫子羅云,年雖幼稚,神足純備,戒行無缺。吾

【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks the Sutra of King Śuddhodana's Parinirvana

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was dwelling on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak) in Rājagṛha (Royal City), together with a large assembly of bhikṣus (monks). At that time, the World-Honored One's light was radiant and brilliant, like the sun rising and illuminating the world.

At that time, the king of the Śākya (Shakya) kingdom, named Śuddhodana (Pure Rice) – who governed with righteous Dharma, valued propriety, virtue, benevolence, and righteousness, and always practiced loving-kindness – was afflicted with a severe illness. The four great elements in his body were simultaneously acting up, harming his body. His limbs and joints were about to come apart, and his breathing was unsteady, like a rushing stream. The assisting ministers proclaimed throughout the kingdom for skilled physicians, who all came to examine the king's illness, administering medicine according to his condition, and treating him with various methods, but none could cure him. Auspicious signs had already appeared, indicating that he would soon pass away.

At that time, the king was restless, tossing and turning, like a fish in shallow water. The queen and concubines, seeing him like this, became even more sorrowful and distressed.

At that time, King Śuklodana (White Rice), King Dronodana (Rice Measure), King Mahānāma (Great Name), and other ministers all spoke in unison, saying, 'If the king were to pass away now, we would forever lose our protection, and the kingdom would become weak.' The king's body trembled, his lips were dry, his voice was intermittent, his eyes were blurred, and tears fell. At that time, all the kings, with reverence, knelt with palms together and said in unison, 'Your Majesty's nature has always been averse to evil. Even for a finger-snap's time, you accumulate merit without weariness, protecting and nurturing the people, so that none are without peace. Your name is known throughout the ten directions. Why are you so sorrowful and distressed today?'

At that time, King Śuddhodana, speaking intermittently, told the kings, 'Even if my life were to pass away, I would not feel bitter, but I regret not seeing my son Siddhartha (He who achieves his goal), and I also regret not seeing my second son Nanda (Joy), who can eliminate greed, lust, and worldly desires; I also regret not seeing Dronodana's son Ānanda (Bliss), who can uphold the treasury of the Buddha's Dharma without losing a single word; I also regret not seeing my grandson Rāhula (Fetter), who, although young in age, is fully endowed with spiritual powers and whose conduct in precepts is without flaw. I...'


設得見是諸子等,我病雖篤,未離生死,不以為苦。」諸在王邊,聞如是語,莫不啼泣,淚下如雨。

時白飯王,答凈飯王言:「我聞世尊在王舍城耆阇崛山中,去此懸遠,五十由旬。王今轉羸,設遣使者,道路懸邈,懼恐遲晚,無所加益。唯愿大王,莫大愁悒懸念諸子。」

時,凈飯王聞是語已,垂淚而言,答白飯王:「我子等輩,雖復遼遠,意望不斷。所以者何?我子成佛,以大慈悲,恒以神通,天眼徹視,天耳洞聽,救接眾生應可度者,如有百千萬億眾生,為水所溺,以慈愍心,為作船筏,而度脫之,終不勞疲。譬如有人為賊所圍,或值怨敵惶怖失計,不望自濟;唯求救護,依有勢者,欲從恐難而得解脫。譬如有人時得重病,欲得良醫以療其疾;如我今日,望見世尊,亦復如是。所以然者?世尊晝夜,常以三時,恒以天眼,觀于眾生應受化者,以慈愍心,如母念子。」

爾時,世尊在靈鷲山,天耳遙聞,迦維羅衛大城之中,父王悒遲及諸王言,即以天眼,遙見父王,病臥著床羸困憔悴命欲向終,知父渴仰欲見諸子。

爾時,世尊告難陀曰:「父王凈飯,勝世間王,是我曹父,今得重病,宜當往見,余命少在,時嚴速發,我曹應往,及命存在,得與相見,令王愿滿。」

難陀受教

當時,世尊告訴難陀(Nanda)說:『父王凈飯(Śuddhodana),是超越世間諸王的國王,是我們的父親,現在得了重病,應該前去探望,剩餘的生命不多了,要迅速出發,我們應該前去,趁著生命還在,能夠與他相見,讓父王的心願圓滿。』

難陀接受了教誨。

【English Translation】 English version: 『If I could see these sons, even though my illness is severe and I have not yet escaped birth and death, I would not feel it as suffering.』 Those who were by the king's side, hearing these words, could not help but weep, tears falling like rain.

At that time, Bālabhojana (White Rice King) replied to Śuddhodana (Pure Rice King), saying, 『I have heard that the World-Honored One (Bhagavan) is at Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak) in Rājagṛha (Royal City), which is very far from here, fifty yojanas (leagues). The king is now weak, and even if messengers were sent, the road is long and distant, I fear it would be too late and of no help. I only hope that the Great King does not grieve excessively and worry about the princes.』

At that time, Śuddhodana, hearing these words, wept and said in reply to Bālabhojana, 『My sons, even though they are far away, my thoughts of them will not cease. Why is that? My son has become a Buddha, with great compassion, constantly using his supernatural powers, using his heavenly eye to see through everything, using his heavenly ear to hear everything, to rescue those beings who should be saved. If there are hundreds of millions of billions of beings drowning in water, he will, with a compassionate heart, make rafts for them and deliver them, never tiring. It is like someone surrounded by thieves, or encountering enemies, panicking and losing their senses, not expecting to save themselves; they only seek rescue, relying on those with power, hoping to be freed from fear and difficulty. It is like someone who has a serious illness, wanting to find a good doctor to cure their disease; as I am today, hoping to see the World-Honored One, it is also like that. Why is that? The World-Honored One, day and night, constantly at three times, constantly uses his heavenly eye to observe those beings who should be transformed, with a compassionate heart, like a mother thinking of her son.』

At that time, the World-Honored One was on Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain, and with his heavenly ear, he heard from afar, in the great city of Kapilavastu, the words of his father, the king, hesitating and worrying, and the words of the ministers. Immediately, with his heavenly eye, he saw from afar his father, the king, lying sick in bed, weak and emaciated, his life nearing its end, knowing that his father longed to see his sons.

At that time, the World-Honored One said to Nanda, 『King Śuddhodana, who surpasses the kings of the world, is our father, and now he is seriously ill. We should go to see him. There is little life remaining. We should depart quickly, we should go, while life remains, to be able to see him, so that the king's wish may be fulfilled.』

Nanda received the teaching.


,長跪作禮:「唯然,世尊!凈飯王者,是我曹父,所作奇特,能生聖子,利益世間,今宜往詣,報育養恩。」

阿難合掌前白佛言:「我隨世尊貪共相見,凈飯王者是我伯父,聽我出家為佛弟子,得佛為師,是故欲往。」

羅云復前,而白佛言:「世尊雖是我父,棄國求道,我蒙祖王育養成就,而得出家,是故欲往奉覲祖王。」

佛言:「善哉!善哉!宜知是時,令王愿滿。」

於是,世尊即以神足,猶如雁王,踴身虛空,忽然而現在迦維羅衛,放大光明。國中人民,遙見佛來,皆共舉聲,涕淚而言:「設大王崩,舍夷國名必絕滅矣。」城中人民向佛啼哭,白世尊言:「爾時,太子逾出宮城,詣藍毗樹下,而坐思惟,父王見之,稽首敬禮。大王如是,命斷不久,唯愿如來,宜可時往及共相見。」

國中人民,宛轉自撲,哽咽啼哭,中有自絕瓔珞者、中有自裂壞衣服者、中有自㨑拔其發者、中有取灰土而自坌者,痛徹骨髓,猶癲狂人。

佛見是已,諫國中人:「無常別離,古今有是,汝等諸人!當思念之,生死為苦,唯道是真。」佛以法雨,灌眾生心,以種種法,而開解之。

於是世尊,即以十力、四無所畏、十八不共諸佛之法,放大光明;更復重以三十二相、八十種好

【English Translation】 English version: They knelt down and paid homage, saying, 'Yes, World Honored One! King Śuddhodana is our father. The extraordinary thing he did was to give birth to you, the Holy Son, benefiting the world. Now we should go and visit him to repay his nurturing grace.' Ānanda, with his palms together, stepped forward and said to the Buddha, 'I have been following the World Honored One, always hoping to see him. King Śuddhodana is my uncle. He allowed me to leave home and become a disciple of the Buddha, and to have the Buddha as my teacher. Therefore, I wish to go and visit him.' Rāhula also stepped forward and said to the Buddha, 'Although the World Honored One is my father, he abandoned the kingdom to seek the Way. I was raised and nurtured by my grandfather, the King, and was able to leave home. Therefore, I wish to go and pay my respects to my grandfather.' The Buddha said, 'Excellent! Excellent! You should know the right time to fulfill the King's wishes.' Thereupon, the World Honored One immediately used his supernatural powers, like a wild goose king, soaring into the sky, and suddenly appeared in Kapilavastu, emitting great light. The people in the country, seeing the Buddha coming from afar, all cried out in unison, weeping and saying, 'If the Great King passes away, the name of the Śākya kingdom will surely be extinguished!' The people in the city cried to the Buddha, saying, 'At that time, the Prince crossed the palace walls and went to the Lumbini tree to sit and contemplate. When the King saw him, he bowed and paid homage. The Great King is now in such a state, his life will not last long. We only hope that the Tathāgata can go and see him in time.' The people in the country fell to the ground, sobbing and crying. Some tore off their necklaces, some tore their clothes, some pulled out their hair, and some took ashes and threw them on themselves, the pain piercing their bones, like madmen. Seeing this, the Buddha admonished the people in the country, 'Impermanence and separation have always been the case since ancient times. All of you! You should contemplate these truths. Birth and death are suffering, only the true path is real.' The Buddha used the rain of Dharma to irrigate the minds of sentient beings, and used various Dharma teachings to enlighten them. Then the World Honored One, with the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddhas, emitted great light; and further with the thirty-two marks and eighty minor characteristics


,放大光明;以從無量阿僧祇劫,所作功德,放大光明。其光照曜,內外通達,周遍國界,光照王身,患苦得安,王遂怪言:「是何光耶?為日月光、諸天光乎!光觸我身,如天栴檀,令我身中患苦得息,我遂疑怪。儻是我子悉達來也,先現光明,是其瑞耳。」

時,大稱王從外入宮,白大王言:「世尊已來,將諸弟子阿難、難陀、羅云之等,乘空來至,王宜歡喜,舍愁毒心。」

王聞佛來,敬意踴躍,不覺起坐,須臾之頃,佛便入宮。王見佛到,遙舉兩手,接足而言:「唯愿如來,手觸我身,令我得安,為病所困,如壓麻油,痛不可忍,我命將逝,寧可還反,我今最後,得見世尊,痛恨即除。」

佛知父王病重羸瘦,色變難識,睹見形體,憔悴叵看,佛告難陀:「觀王本時,形體巍巍,顏色端正,名聲遠聞,今得重病,乃不可識;端正形容、勇健之名,今何所在?」

爾時,凈飯王一心合掌,嘆世尊言:

「汝愿已成就,  亦滿眾生愿,  我今得重病,  愿佛度我厄。  嚴飾瞿曇種,  汝為甚奇特,  末世說正法,  無護而作護。  法王以法味,  灌澤諸眾生,  如是後世人,  我子極慈孝。  人中之上寶,  名達大千界,  上至凈居天,  獨步無等雙

【English Translation】 English version: He emitted great light; with the merit accumulated from countless asaṃkhya-kalpas (innumerable eons), he emitted great light. The light illuminated, penetrating both inside and outside, pervading the kingdom, shining upon the king's body, bringing peace to his suffering. The king then wondered, saying, 'What is this light? Is it the light of the sun and moon, or the light of the devas (gods)? The light touches my body like heavenly candana (sandalwood), relieving the suffering in my body. I am therefore puzzled and amazed. Could it be that my son Siddhartha has come, first manifesting light as an auspicious sign?' At that time, Mahānāma entered the palace from outside and reported to the great king, 'The Bhagavan (Blessed One, a title for the Buddha) has arrived, bringing his disciples Ānanda, Nanda, Rāhula, and others, coming through the air. Your Majesty should rejoice and relinquish your sorrowful and painful heart.' Upon hearing that the Buddha had come, the king's reverence surged, and he involuntarily rose and sat up. Shortly thereafter, the Buddha entered the palace. Seeing the Buddha arrive, the king raised both hands from afar, prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet, and said, 'May the Tathāgata (Thus Come One, another title for the Buddha) touch my body with his hand, so that I may find peace. I am afflicted by illness, like being pressed for sesame oil, the pain is unbearable. My life is about to pass away, can it still return? This is the last time in my life that I have the opportunity to see the World-Honored One, and my pain and regret are immediately dispelled.' The Buddha knew that his father, the king, was seriously ill, extremely weak and emaciated, and his complexion had changed beyond recognition. Seeing his form, so haggard that it was unbearable to look at, the Buddha said to Nanda, 'Observe the king's original appearance, how tall and majestic his form was, how upright his countenance, how far his reputation spread. Now, having contracted a serious illness, he has become unrecognizable. Where are his upright appearance and his reputation for courage and strength now?' At that time, King Śuddhodana, with a focused mind, joined his palms together and praised the World-Honored One, saying: 'Your vows have been fulfilled, and you have also fulfilled the vows of all beings. I am now seriously ill; may the Buddha deliver me from my distress. You have adorned the Gautama lineage; you are exceedingly unique. In the degenerate age, you proclaim the true Dharma, and without protection, you act as a protector. The Dharma King (Dharmaraja, another title for the Buddha) uses the flavor of the Dharma to irrigate and nourish all beings. Thus, future generations will say that my son is extremely compassionate and filial. You are the supreme treasure among humans, your name reaches the great thousand world system, up to the Śuddhāvāsa heavens, unparalleled and without equal.'

佛言:「唯愿父王,莫復愁悒。所以然者?道德純備,無有缺減。」佛從袈裟里出金色臂,掌如蓮華,即以手著父王額上:「王是清凈、戒行之人,心垢已離,今應歡悅,不宜煩惱。當諦思念,諸經法義,于不牢固,得堅固志,已種善根。是故,大王!宜當歡喜,命雖欲終,自可寬意。」

時大稱王以恭敬心,白凈飯王言:「佛是王子,神力具足,無與等者;次子難陀,亦是王子,已度生死諸欲之海,四道無礙;斛飯王子阿難陀者,已服法味,佛所說法,猶若淵海,一句不忘,悉總持之;王孫羅云,道德純備,逮諸禪定,成四道果。是四子等,已壞魔網。」

You should rejoice, even though your life is about to end, you can set your mind at ease.' The Tathāgata is supremely true, greatly beneficial, those who are able to see the Tathāgata, and hear what he says, these people are blessed, people of great merit. Today the World-Honored One is my son, I am grateful for your excessive care, and that you have not abandoned me.' The king, lying on his bed, with palms joined, respectfully bowed at the feet of the World-Honored One, at this time the Buddha's palm was still on the king's heart, impermanence arrived, his life ended, his breath ceased, and he suddenly passed away. 爾時世尊,威光益顯,如萬日並。如來躬身,手執香爐,在喪前行,出詣葬所,靈鷲山上。有千阿羅漢,以神足力,乘虛來至,稽首佛足,復白佛言:「唯愿世尊,敕使何事!」

時,佛便告諸阿羅漢:「汝等疾往大海渚上,取牛頭栴檀種種香木。」即受教敕,如彈指頃,各到大海,共取香薪,屈伸臂頃,便已來到。

佛與大眾,共積香薪,舉棺置上,放火焚之。一切大眾,見火盛然,皆向佛前,宛轉自撲,益更悲哭。有得道者,皆自慶幸;未獲道者,心戰惶怖,衣毛為豎。

爾時世尊,告眾會曰:「世皆無常,苦空非身,無有堅固,如幻如化,如熱時炎,如水中月,命不久居。汝等諸人!勿見此火,便以為熱,諸欲之火,極復過此。是故汝等,當自勸勉,永離生死,乃得大安。」時火焚燒大王身已。

At that time, all the assembly simultaneously raised their voices and said to the Buddha: 'Great King Śuddhodana (Śuddhodana, father of Siddhartha Gautama) has now passed away. Where has his spirit been reborn? We hope that the Bhagavan (Bhagavan, the Blessed One) will explain it in detail.'

At that time, the Bhagavan told the assembly: 'King Śuddhodana (Śuddhodana), my father, is a pure person and has been reborn in the Śuddhāvāsa (Śuddhāvāsa, Pure Abodes) heaven.' Upon hearing these words, the assembly relinquished their sorrow.
