宋居士沮渠京聲譯

聞如是:

一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,與千二百五十比丘俱。

時有國王,號曰末羅,土地豐沃,士民壯勇。其國中有方石,周旋數十里,當於王道。群臣共議,啟王徙石。王便料選國內,凡得九億人,令掘徙石,乃歷年月,士民疲極,不能動石。

佛念人民愚癡,空自勤苦,而石不移,即呼阿難:「與汝俱往。」如彈指頃,便到其國。

佛時作沙門,被服住在石邊,謂人民言:「用何故掘徙此石?」初無應者,如是至三,人民恚言:「我掘此石,勤苦經年,卿何等人,反來問我?」各自委去。

佛即時笑,以足指挑石,手受之,擲置空中,復以手受,住之於地。佛便放光明、現相好,九億人見佛威神,莫不震聳,皆叩頭言:「吾等愚癡,不別真偽,將何神天?」

佛言:「我是佛也。」

人民問言:「佛用何等力能舉此石?」答言:「我有四力。何等為四?一為精進力、二為忍辱力、三為佈施力、四為父母力。

「何等為精進力?謂不殺盜淫欺,廣陳經法,開導人物,未曾懈怠,是為精進力。

我(阿難)是這樣聽說的:

一時,佛陀在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,與一千二百五十位比丘在一起。

當時有一位國王,名叫末羅(Mala),他的土地肥沃,士兵和百姓都非常強壯勇敢。他的國家中有一塊方形的巨石,周圍有幾十里,正擋在王道的路上。大臣們共同商議,請求國王遷移這塊石頭。國王便挑選了國內的百姓,總共有九億人,讓他們挖掘並遷移這塊石頭,經過了很長的時間,百姓們都疲憊不堪,卻無法移動這塊石頭。

佛陀想到人民愚癡,白白地勤勞辛苦,卻無法移動石頭,就呼喚阿難(Ananda)說:『和你一起去。』像彈指間一樣,便到了那個國家。

佛陀當時化作沙門(Shramana),穿著僧衣站在石頭旁邊,對人民說:『你們因為什麼緣故要挖掘並遷移這塊石頭?』起初沒有人回答,這樣問了三次,人民生氣地說:『我們挖掘這塊石頭,勤勞辛苦已經一年了,你是什麼人,反而來問我們?』各自離開了。

佛陀立刻笑了,用腳趾挑起石頭,用手接住它,拋到空中,又用手接住,放在地上。佛陀便放出光明,顯現美好的相貌,九億人看到佛陀的威神之力,沒有不震驚害怕的,都叩頭說:『我們愚癡,不辨別真假,還以為是什麼神仙?』

佛陀說:『我是佛。』

人民問道:『佛陀用什麼力量能夠舉起這塊石頭?』佛陀回答說:『我有四種力量。哪四種呢?一是精進力、二是忍辱力、三是佈施力、四是父母力。』

『什麼是精進力?就是不殺生、不偷盜、不邪淫、不欺騙,廣泛地宣講經法,開導人們,從不懈怠,這就是精進力。

『什麼是忍

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of King Mala Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by Layman Juqu Jingsheng of the Song Dynasty

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in Jeta Grove in Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti, together with twelve hundred and fifty Bhikshus.

At that time, there was a king named Mala (Mala, meaning 'garland' or 'impurity'), whose land was fertile, and whose soldiers and people were strong and brave. In his country, there was a square stone, several tens of li in circumference, which was blocking the royal road. The ministers discussed together and requested the king to move the stone. The king then selected the people of the country, a total of nine hundred million people, and ordered them to dig and move the stone. After many years, the people were exhausted and unable to move the stone.

The Buddha thought that the people were foolish, toiling in vain, and unable to move the stone. He then called Ananda (Ananda, the Buddha's attendant) and said, 'Go with me.' In the time it takes to snap one's fingers, they arrived in that country.

The Buddha then transformed into a Shramana (Shramana, a wandering ascetic), wearing monastic robes and standing by the stone. He said to the people, 'For what reason are you digging and moving this stone?' At first, no one answered. He asked this three times. The people angrily said, 'We have been digging this stone, toiling for a year. Who are you to come and ask us?' They each left.

The Buddha immediately smiled, picked up the stone with his toe, caught it with his hand, threw it into the air, caught it again with his hand, and placed it on the ground. The Buddha then emitted light and manifested auspicious marks. The nine hundred million people saw the Buddha's majestic power and were all shocked and frightened. They all kowtowed and said, 'We are foolish and cannot distinguish between truth and falsehood. What kind of deity are you?'

The Buddha said, 'I am the Buddha.'

The people asked, 'What power does the Buddha use to lift this stone?' The Buddha replied, 'I have four powers. What are the four? First is the power of diligence, second is the power of patience, third is the power of generosity, and fourth is the power of the parents.'

'What is the power of diligence? It is not killing, not stealing, not engaging in sexual misconduct, not lying, widely expounding the scriptures, guiding people, and never being lazy. This is the power of diligence.

'What is the power of patience?'


辱力?敢有殘害毀辱,加惡於我,我心如地,無所不受,是為忍辱力。

「何等為佈施力?謂以國土珍寶妻子頭眼,悉以施人,意無恨悔,是為佈施力。

「何等為父母力?謂受父母身體哺乳育養之恩,或從地積珍寶,上至二十八天,悉以施人,不如供養父母,是為父母力。」

人民復問言:「盡復有何等力?」

佛言:「復有四力。何等為四?謂生、老、病、死是為四力。」

復問言:「佛當常住於世不?」

佛言:「我亦當般泥洹。」

人民言:「佛乃神聖,相好金色,當世希有,猶尚般泥洹,何況我曹?」王及臣民,九億人同時意解,乞受五戒十善,歸命三尊,結解垢除,即得須陀洹道。

阿難正衣服,為佛作禮白言:「是王及與九億人,皆有何功德,今聞經即得解疾?」

佛言:「乃昔俱留秦佛時,王及國中九億人,同時立志,或受五戒十善者、或持齋者、或然燈者、或燒香散華者、或諷誦經者或聽經者,今故來會,聞經即解。」

諸比丘歡喜,前為佛作禮。

佛說末羅王經

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本 『何謂忍辱力?』如果有人侮辱、傷害、譭謗我,用惡行加害於我,我的心如同大地,毫無怨言地接受一切,這就是忍辱力。

『何謂佈施力?』就是說,用國土、珍寶、妻子、頭、眼,全部施捨給他人,心中沒有後悔和吝惜,這就是佈施力。

『何謂父母力?』就是說,承受父母給予的身體,以及哺乳養育的恩情,即使從地上堆積珍寶,一直堆到二十八天(指色界天),全部用來佈施給別人,也不如供養父母的功德大,這就是父母力。』

人民又問:『還有什麼其他的力量嗎?』

佛說:『還有四種力量。哪四種呢?就是生、老、病、死,這就是四種力量。』

又問:『佛會永遠住世嗎?』

佛說:『我也會入般泥洹(涅槃)。』

人民說:『佛是如此神聖,相貌莊嚴,身色金黃,世間罕有,尚且要入般泥洹(涅槃),更何況我們呢?』國王和臣民,九億人同時領悟,請求受持五戒十善,歸依三寶,煩惱解脫,垢穢消除,立即證得須陀洹(入流果)道。

阿難(佛陀的弟子)整理好衣服,向佛作禮,稟告說:『這位國王和這九億人,都積有什麼功德,今天聽聞佛經就能如此迅速地開悟解脫?』

佛說:『在過去俱留秦佛(過去七佛之一)出世時,這位國王和國中的九億人,同時發願立志,有的受持五戒十善,有的持齋,有的燃燈,有的燒香散花,有的諷誦佛經,有的聽聞佛經,今天故此來聚會,聽聞佛經就能開悟解脫。』

眾比丘歡喜,上前向佛作禮。

佛說《末羅王經》

【English Translation】 English version 『What is the power of forbearance (忍辱力, renru li)?』 If someone insults, harms, slanders me, and inflicts evil upon me, my heart is like the earth, accepting everything without resentment. This is the power of forbearance.

『What is the power of giving (佈施力, bushi li)?』 It means giving away one's country, treasures, wife, head, and eyes entirely to others, without regret or stinginess in the heart. This is the power of giving.

『What is the power of parents (父母力, fumu li)?』 It means receiving the body from parents and the kindness of their breastfeeding and nurturing. Even if one were to accumulate treasures from the earth up to the twenty-eighth heaven (referring to the Form Realm heavens) and give them all away, it would not equal the merit of supporting one's parents. This is the power of parents.』

The people then asked: 『Are there any other powers?』

The Buddha said: 『There are four other powers. What are the four? They are birth, old age, sickness, and death. These are the four powers.』

They asked again: 『Will the Buddha always abide in the world?』

The Buddha said: 『I will also enter Parinirvana (般泥洹, ban ni huan).』

The people said: 『The Buddha is so divine, with such dignified features and golden complexion, rare in the world, and yet even he will enter Parinirvana (般泥洹, ban ni huan). What about us then?』 The king and his subjects, nine hundred million people, simultaneously understood, requested to receive the Five Precepts and the Ten Virtuous Deeds, took refuge in the Three Jewels, their afflictions were untied, their defilements removed, and they immediately attained the path of Srotapanna (須陀洹, xutuo huan) (stream-enterer).

Ananda (阿難, Anan) (the Buddha's disciple) arranged his robes, bowed to the Buddha, and reported: 『What merits have this king and these nine hundred million people accumulated that they can attain liberation so quickly upon hearing the sutra today?』

The Buddha said: 『In the past, when Krakucchanda Buddha (俱留秦佛, Juluqin fo) (one of the past seven Buddhas) appeared in the world, this king and the nine hundred million people in his kingdom simultaneously made vows, some taking the Five Precepts and the Ten Virtuous Deeds, some observing fasts, some lighting lamps, some burning incense and scattering flowers, some reciting sutras, and some listening to sutras. Therefore, they have come together today, and upon hearing the sutra, they can attain liberation.』

The Bhikkhus rejoiced and bowed to the Buddha.
