【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks of King Mātṛ Sūtra

Translated by Layman Jūqú Jīngshēng of the Song Dynasty

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in the Bamboo Grove in Rāmagṛha (City of Royal Palaces), together with twelve hundred and fifty Bhikshus.

At that time, there was a king named King Mātṛ (Mother), who was about to lead an army to conquer. He selected millions of people from the country, all of whom were required to follow.

At that time, there was a Bhikshu who had already attained the state of Arhat. He went to the king's country to beg for food and was also registered to be brought to the gate of the royal palace. The king had a horse supervisor who ordered the Bhikshu to take care of the official horses, working diligently for seven days. The queen personally inspected the military formations. When the Bhikshu saw the king, he lightly flew up in front of him, staying in the air, displaying his divine power. The king was terrified and kowtowed in repentance, saying, 'I am truly foolish, unable to distinguish truth from falsehood. I will investigate within the country who made this divine person do these things, and I shall punish and kill them.'

The Bhikshu told the king, 'It is not the fault of the king or the people of the country, but it is due to my past karma. In my past life, when I was practicing the Way, I often made offerings to my teacher. Once, I prepared food for my teacher, and the teacher said to me, 'Wash your hands first before eating.' I was foolish at the time and thought, 'The teacher does not take care of official horses, why doesn't he wash his hands beforehand?' The teacher then said to me, 'You are only being so dismissive now, what will happen when it becomes serious?' When I heard these words, I became worried. The teacher knew my thoughts and thought, 'I am about to enter Nirvana, why cause trouble for others?' He then entered Nirvana at the third watch of the night. Since then, after a long time, we have each experienced the cycle of birth and death. Now, for this reason, I am receiving the retribution of my past karma, taking care of horses for seven days. Good and evil deeds will have corresponding blessings and disasters, just like a shadow follows the form.'

When the king heard the Bhikshu explain the principles of sin and merit, his mind was enlightened, and he was very happy. He requested to take refuge in this divine person. The Bhikshu told him, 'You should take refuge in the Buddha, the Buddha is the teacher of the Three Realms.'

The king and the people of the country all followed the Bhikshu to take refuge in the Buddha.

【English Translation】 English version: Qiu (a name) came to where the Buddha was, prostrated himself and paid homage to the Buddha, and received the five precepts to become an Upasaka (lay male devotee). The Buddha then manifested his majestic and divine power with auspicious marks for the king and the people, illuminating the heavens and the earth, and further explained the principles of impermanence, suffering, and emptiness to them. As a result, the king attained the state of Srotapanna (stream-enterer), and the people of the kingdom all accepted the five precepts and the ten virtues, took refuge in the Three Jewels, and observed monthly fasting as a constant practice.

Ananda (Buddha's disciple) adjusted his robes, paid homage to the Buddha, and reported, 'This king and the people of the kingdom are able to understand as soon as they see the Buddha and hear the scriptures. What is the reason for this?'

The Buddha said, 'In the time of the past Kasyapa Buddha (Kāśyapa Buddha), this Bhikkhu (ordained male monastic) was a Shramana (ascetic), and the king was an Upasaka (lay male devotee) who offered pure-hearted offerings to me for three days, so that wherever I was, I would always receive blessings. Now he has attained the path of liberation from the world, and today he has come to this gathering, and upon hearing the scriptures, he has attained the state of Srotapanna (stream-enterer).'

The fourfold assembly of disciples (Bhikkhus, Bhikkhunis, Upasakas, Upasikas), as well as the Devas, Nagas, and spirits, rejoiced upon hearing the scriptures, stepped forward to pay homage to the Buddha, and departed.
