【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks of the Śālla Country Sutra
(Translator unknown, now appended to the Eastern Jin record)
In the past, there was a great country named Śālla (Śālla, a place name), with vast lands and beautiful, clean surroundings. It was densely populated, prosperous, and joyful. The artisans were clever, the women were beautiful, and they loved elaborate decorations. It produced various treasures in five colors, including black and yellow. The city walls, pavilions, streets, and gates were adorned with gold and silver, square and round, clean and beautiful. Around the city were bathing ponds where lotuses grew, and various birds such as ducks, geese, mandarin ducks, Jiu Yi birds, Luo birds, peacocks, parrots, herons, and cormorants flew up and down, chasing each other in the ponds, resting day and night, and singing harmoniously. Men and women played and made merry, singing and dancing without ever tiring, their joy beyond description. They were self-righteous, arrogant, and did not understand the Buddha's teachings, each feeling happy and thinking that no one in the world could compare to them.
The Buddha was in the Jetavana-anāthapindika-ārāma (Jetavana-anāthapindika-ārāma) in Śrāvastī (Śrāvastī). The Buddha saw this country indulging in such pleasures, not considering the impermanence and suffering of life and death, and clinging to worldly desires without ceasing. The Buddha thought that the people of this country were constantly increasing their afflictions due to birth and death, and if skillful means and wisdom were not used, who could liberate them? So the Buddha devised a way to open their minds: 'All forms and appearances should be treated with the concept of emptiness, and all joys should be treated with the concept of suffering. Skillfully use methods, according to the wishes of sentient beings, to free them from delusion and discrimination.'
The Buddha then manifested supernatural powers, entered the cintāmaṇi-samādhi (cintāmaṇi-samādhi), and emitted great light, illuminating all places, moving the eight directions and humans, non-humans, gods, and dragons, who all followed behind the Buddha. Indra (Indra) and Brahmā (Brahmā) held precious seven-jeweled canopies and offered them to the Buddha. Maitreya Bodhisattva (Maitreya), Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva (Mañjuśrī), Maudgalyāyana (Maudgalyāyana), Rāhula (Rāhula), Ānanda (Ānanda), Revata (Revata), Śāriputra (Śāriputra), and other disciples and Bodhisattvas, countless thousands, all followed behind the Buddha, together going to that country. Various birds and animals sang harmoniously, and songs and music played naturally without being struck. Withered trees all grew anew, and aquatic creatures in the ditches, rivers, and seas, such as turtles, soft-shelled turtles, and fish, were all delighted. The three thousand lands all shook greatly, and lotuses as large as chariot wheels grew from the ground, with various jewels and lapis lazuli intertwined, their colors extremely beautiful and their light dazzling.
【English Translation】 English version: Where the light shines, all places in darkness and suffering are opened up without any hindrance. The king, ministers, elders, laymen, the crown prince, consorts, beauties, and the people, great and small, were all alarmed: 'What is the reason for this phenomenon today? We enjoy the pleasures of the five kinds of music in the palace, comforting ourselves with unparalleled joy, but what we see now is rare in the world.' At that time, Dharani (Earth-holding) deity emerged from the earth and appeared before the king's palace, praising the Buddha's merits: 'The light manifested by the World Honored One (a title for the Buddha) surpasses the sun and moon. The devas (gods) admire and revere him, and Sakra (Indra) and Brahma (the creator god) respect him. Worldly defilements have been removed, and one is liberated from the cycle of birth and death. Those who see the Buddha have their sins eliminated, and those who make offerings to the Buddha receive immeasurable blessings. Planting the roots of virtue will lead to rebirth in the heavens. A single thought of wisdom brings infinite benefits. You should go to see the Buddha and seek the Dharma (teachings) from him.' The queen was overjoyed and said: 'The Tathagata (another title for the Buddha) has descended into our kingdom, and sentient beings will be saved.' Not only herself, but all her attendants and the rest of the people went out of the city, rejoicing and leaping for joy. The Buddha's majestic power made the kingdom vast, bright, and boundless. The king and the people all went to see the Buddha, and how joyful it was that the roots of merit and good thoughts arose! They beheld the Buddha's noble countenance, radiant with golden light, majestic and adorned with auspicious signs, his features clear and serene, his mind tranquil and composed. The king and the people all prostrated themselves before the Buddha, touching their heads to the ground, circumambulated him three times, and then stood before him, explaining in detail: 'We have long been immersed in greed and defilement, deluded by sights and sounds, and have not seen the Tathagata (another title for the Buddha) to make offerings and ask about the Dharma (teachings).' The Buddha said: 'Excellent! Are the king, ministers, and the crown prince all well?' The king said: 'Thanks to the Buddha's grace, everything is well.' The Buddha said: 'The king is greedy and defiled, indulging his desires without satisfaction, levying taxes and treasures, indulging in delicacies, and engaging in endless games in gardens and bathing pools, without thinking of the impermanence that comes quickly. What good is it to have even ten thousand parts of wealth? People are bound by desires and do not think of the afterlife, which leads to the realms of hell and animals. Just because of insatiable desires, they suffer the pain of being burned and having their bodies mutilated, having no food when hungry and no water when thirsty, panicking, grieving, and harming each other, all because they do not consider the long term.'
【English Translation】 English version: 'Reversing the mind and committing evil. Although rich and in a high position in the world, residing in deep palaces, all this is impermanent, like awakening from a dream. Imagine life coming alone, with nothing to take along.'
The king knelt before the Buddha and said, 'Bhagavan (term of respect for the Buddha)! By what means can I be freed from this sin? The Buddha is the Dharmaraja (ruler of the Dharma), to whom all beings turn. The Buddha is the true supreme, the refuge of all beings. I hope you can save me and free me from this suffering.'
The Buddha said, 'Excellent! If the king establishes the root of faith and practices these four things, he can be freed from sin: First, give away all possessions without being stingy; second, reduce desires and anger, and restrain greedy eating; third, listen to the Buddha's teachings and precepts, believe and practice them without violating them; fourth, respect and be cautious of Dharma masters and good advisors. These are the four things by which one can attain purity.'
The king had the thought of wanting to make a great offering, so he stepped forward, bowed respectfully, and said to the Buddha with his palms together, 'I hope you will condescend to grace my palace with a small meal.' The Buddha remained silent, indicating that he had accepted the invitation.
The king returned to the palace and instructed his ministers and officials, 'The Buddha is difficult to encounter, like the Udumbara flower (a legendary rare flower). Now that we have encountered him, we should make offerings well. Bring out all kinds of flowers, incense, banners, and music, decorate the palace, sweep and clean it, and hang banners and canopies in the streets and alleys of the city.'
The queen and the people of the country all received the king's instructions, arranged the beds and seats, and then ordered the cooks to prepare all kinds of delicious food, blending fragrant and sweet flavors, and then went to welcome the Buddha: 'The offerings are ready, I hope you can move your divine presence.'
When it was time for the Buddha to eat, he arose from his seat and emitted a majestic light that moved all those present. The fourfold assembly (bhikshus, bhikshunis, upasakas, upasikas) and hundreds of thousands of devas, as well as the dragon gods, Gandharvas (heavenly musicians), and other retinue surrounded and followed the Buddha. The Four Heavenly Kings (Caturmaharajakayikas, guardians of Buddhism) led the way, and Śakra (ruler of the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven) and Brahma (lord of the Form Realm) supported the Buddha. Bodhisattvas attended the Buddha as he entered the city.
When the Buddha stepped over the threshold, the realm shook, and the blind, deaf, mute, those poisoned, sick, and emaciated were all restored to health. The konghou instruments played music without being struck. The Buddha emitted light that illuminated all the palaces, and the city walls and houses all turned into lapis lazuli, transparent inside and out, so that everyone could see the Buddha.
The Buddha went to the front of the hall and ascended the lion throne. The king, the prince, the ministers, and the people of the country then set out the food and personally served it. After the meal was finished, they began...

【English Translation】 English version: After the bathing was complete, all the people were seated. The king took a small stool and sat before the Buddha to listen to the teachings. The Buddha began to turn the Dharma wheel, expounding the Dharma of non-retrogression. The king, hearing this, was overjoyed and offered his own clothing to the Buddha, clothing worth millions, rare in the world. The scattered clothing hung in the void, transforming above the Buddha into a jeweled canopy, interwoven with the seven treasures, all hung with pearls. From these hanging pearls emanated light, illuminating countless Buddha lands in the ten directions. The king, along with his ministers, palace princes, consorts, beautiful women, and others, totaling over ten thousand people, seeing this transformation, were all overjoyed and generated the unsurpassed, true, and right mind of enlightenment. Eight hundred devas (deities) attained the patience of non-arising dharmas, five thousand bodhisattvas (enlightenment beings) established themselves in non-retrogression, and countless thousands planted roots of virtue, all to be reborn in the heavens after the end of their lives.
The Buddha said to Ananda (one of the principal disciples of the Buddha): 'This king has made offerings to over five hundred Buddhas, bestowing wealth and treasures, equally practicing compassion, and respecting the Dharma without weariness. He will become a Buddha in a future kalpa (aeon), with the name Huiguang Tathagata (Tathagata of Wisdom Light), the Supremely True, the Perfectly Enlightened One; the people of this country and the consorts will all receive his blessings and all will be able to become Buddhas.'
The king, hearing the Buddha's prediction, joyfully leaped into the air, his body rising one hundred and forty zhang (an ancient Chinese unit of measurement) above the ground. Descending from the air, he praised the Buddha's merits: 'The Buddha is so venerable, the root of all beings, his virtue is like the sky, covering all without exception.'
Eight thousand people in the country, hearing the Buddha's prediction for the king, generated pure minds and vowed to become bodhisattvas.
After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, all those present, including humans and non-humans, were filled with joy. Such is the skillful means of the World Honored One, and such is what he teaches.
