失譯人名今附東晉錄

昔有五王,國界相近,共相往來,不相攻伐,唯作善友。

其最大者,字普安王,習菩薩行;餘四小王,常習邪行。大王憐愍,意欲度之,呼來上殿,共相娛樂,乃至七日,終日竟夜,作倡伎樂。七日已滿,四王共白大王言:「國事甚多,請還政治。」

大王語諸左右:「嚴駕車乘,群臣吏民都共送之。」

至其半道,大王憐愍,意欲度之,語四王言:「各說卿等所樂之事。」

一王言:「我願欲得陽春三月樹木榮華,遊戲原野,是我所樂。」

一王復言:「我願欲得常作國王,鞍馬服飾,樓閣殿堂,官屬人民圍繞左右,晃晃昱昱,椎鐘鳴鼓,出入行來,路人傾目,是我之樂。」

一王復言:「我所樂復異,愿得好婦、好兒,端正無雙,共相娛樂,極情快意,是我之樂。」

一王復言:「我所樂復異,愿我父母常在,多有兄弟、妻子,羅列好衣美食,以恣其口,素琴清衣,共相娛樂,是我之樂。」

各自說其所樂竟,四王俱回頭白其大王:「王所樂何事?」

大王答言:「我先說卿等所樂,然後說我之樂。卿一人言:

走到半路時,大王憐憫他們,想要度化他們,對四個國王說:『你們各自說說自己所喜歡的事情。』

一個國王說:『我希望在陽春三月,樹木繁榮茂盛,在原野上游戲玩樂,這是我所喜歡的。』

一個國王又說:『我希望能夠一直做國王,有華麗的鞍馬服飾,高大的樓閣殿堂,官吏人民圍繞在我的左右,光彩奪目,敲鐘擊鼓,出行往來時,路人都注目觀看,這是我的快樂。』

一個國王又說:『我所喜歡的又不一樣,希望有美麗的妻子、可愛的孩子,容貌端正無雙,一起互相娛樂,盡情享受快樂,這是我的快樂。』

一個國王又說:『我所喜歡的又不一樣,希望我的父母永遠健在,有很多兄弟、妻子,陳列著華麗的衣服和美味的食物,來滿足他們的口腹之慾,彈奏著素雅的琴,穿著清淡的衣服,一起互相娛樂,這是我的快樂。』

各自說完自己所喜歡的事情后,四個國王一起回頭問大王:『大王您所喜歡的是什麼事呢?』

大王回答說:『我先說說你們所喜歡的,然後再說我所喜歡的。你一個人說:

【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks the Sutra of the Five Kings

Name of the translator lost; now appended to the Eastern Jin Record.

In the past, there were five kings whose kingdoms bordered each other. They maintained friendly relations, refrained from attacking each other, and acted as benevolent friends.

The greatest among them, named King Pu'an (普安王, King of Universal Peace), practiced the Bodhisattva path. The other four lesser kings often engaged in unwholesome practices. The great king, filled with compassion, desired to liberate them. He summoned them to the palace hall and entertained them for seven days, from morning till night, with music and performances. After the seven days, the four kings together said to the great king, 'Affairs of state are numerous; please allow us to return and govern.'

The great king said to his attendants, 'Prepare the carriages and have the ministers and people escort them.'

Halfway along the road, the great king, with compassion and a desire to liberate them, said to the four kings, 'Each of you, speak of what you find pleasurable.'

One king said, 'I wish to have the flourishing trees and flowers of the third month of spring, and to play in the open fields; this is what I enjoy.'

Another king said, 'I wish to always be a king, with ornamented saddles and horses, magnificent buildings and halls, surrounded by officials and people, shining brightly, striking bells and drums, and with people gazing upon me as I come and go; this is my pleasure.'

Another king said, 'My pleasure is different. I wish to have a good wife and good children, of unparalleled beauty, with whom I can enjoy myself and fulfill my desires; this is my pleasure.'

Another king said, 'My pleasure is different. I wish for my parents to always be alive, to have many brothers and a wife, to have fine clothes and delicious food displayed to satisfy their appetites, to play a simple zither and wear clean clothes, and to enjoy each other's company; this is my pleasure.'

After each had spoken of their pleasures, the four kings turned to the great king and asked, 'What is your pleasure, O Great King?'

The great king replied, 'I will first speak of your pleasures, and then I will speak of my own. One of you said:


『陽春三月樹木榮華,遊戲原野。』秋則凋落,非是久樂。

「卿一人言:『愿我常作國王,鞍馬服飾,樓閣殿堂,官屬人民圍繞左右,晃晃昱昱,椎鐘鳴鼓,出入行來,路人傾目。』往古諸王,隱隱闐闐,快樂無極,福德轉盡,諸國相伐,忽然崩亡,非是久樂。

「卿一人言:『愿得好婦、好兒,端正無雙,共相娛樂,極情快意。』一朝疾病,憂苦無量,非是久樂。

「卿一人言:『愿我父母常在,多有兄弟、妻子,羅列好衣美食,以恣其口,素琴清衣,共相娛樂。』一朝有事,為官所執,系閉在獄,無有救護,此非久樂。」

四人俱問:「王樂何事?」

王言:「我樂不生不死,不苦不惱,不饑不渴,不寒不熱,存亡自在,此是我樂。」

四王俱言:「此樂何處?當有明師?」

大王答言:「吾師號為佛,近在祇桓精舍。」

諸王歡喜,各詣佛所,皆稽首作禮,退坐一面。大王胡跪,叉手白佛言:「我等今得為人,鈍闇無智,但深著世樂,不知罪福,愿佛為弟子等,說其苦諦。」

佛言:「卿等善聽!當爲汝說。人生在世,常有無量眾苦切身,今粗為汝等略說八苦。何謂八苦?生苦、老苦、病苦、死苦、恩愛別苦、所求不得苦、怨憎會苦、憂悲惱苦,是

【English Translation】 English version: In the flourishing third month of spring, trees are verdant and people play in the fields. But in autumn, they wither and fall, this is not lasting joy. One of you said: 'I wish to always be a king, with fine saddles and horses, clothing, towering pavilions and halls, officials and people surrounding me, shining brightly, with booming bells and drums, attracting attention wherever I go.' But the kings of the past, though grand and powerful, with boundless joy, exhausted their blessings, and their kingdoms were conquered, suddenly collapsing. This is not lasting joy. One of you said: 'I wish to have a good wife and good children, beautiful and unparalleled, to enjoy each other's company and indulge in pleasure.' But one day, illness strikes, bringing immeasurable sorrow and suffering. This is not lasting joy. One of you said: 'I wish my parents to always be alive, with many siblings and a wife and children, with an array of fine clothes and delicious food to satisfy their appetites, playing simple zithers and wearing plain clothes, enjoying each other's company.' But one day, trouble arises, and they are arrested by officials, imprisoned, with no one to rescue them. This is not lasting joy.' The four kings all asked: 'What then, does Your Majesty find joy in?' The great king replied: 'I find joy in not being subject to birth and death, not suffering pain and affliction, not experiencing hunger and thirst, not feeling cold and heat, being free to determine my own existence and demise. This is my joy.' The four kings all said: 'Where can this joy be found? Surely there must be a wise teacher?' The great king replied: 'My teacher is called Buddha (Buddha, the Awakened One), and he is currently at the Jetavana Monastery (Jetavana Monastery).' The kings were delighted and went to where the Buddha was, bowed their heads in reverence, and sat to one side. The great king knelt on one knee, clasped his hands, and said to the Buddha: 'We have now obtained human form, but we are dull and ignorant, only deeply attached to worldly pleasures, and do not know what is sin and what is merit. We beseech the Buddha to explain to us disciples the Truth of Suffering (Dukkha Satya, the Truth of Suffering).' The Buddha said: 'Listen carefully! I will explain it to you. In this life, people are constantly afflicted by countless sufferings. Now I will briefly explain the Eight Sufferings to you. What are the Eight Sufferings? They are: the suffering of birth, the suffering of old age, the suffering of sickness, the suffering of death, the suffering of separation from loved ones, the suffering of encountering those we hate, the suffering of not obtaining what we seek, and the suffering of sorrow and distress. These are the Eight Sufferings.'


為八苦也。

「何謂生苦?人死之時,不知精神趣向何道,未得生處,並受中陰之形,至三七日父母和合,便來受胎。一七日如薄酪;二七日如稠酪;三七日如凝酥;四七日如肉臠;五皰成就,巧風入腹,吹其身體;六情開張,在母腹中,生藏之下,熟藏之上。母啖一杯熱食,灌其身體,如入鑊湯;母飲一杯冷水,亦如寒冰切體;母飽之時,迫迮身體,痛不可言;母饑之時,腹中了了,亦如倒懸,受苦無量。至其滿月,欲生之時,頭向產門,劇如兩石挾山;欲生之時,母危父怖,生墮草上,身體細軟,草觸其身,如履刀劍,忽然失聲大呼。此是苦不?」

諸人咸言:「此是大苦。」

「何謂老苦?父母養育,至年長大,自用強健,擔輕負重,不自裁量,寒時極寒,熱時極熱,饑時極饑,飽時極飽,無有節度;漸至年老,頭白齒落,目視𥆨𥆨,耳聽不聰,盛去衰至,皮緩面皺,百節痠疼,行步苦極,坐起呻吟,憂悲心惱,識神轉滅,便旋即忘,命日促盡,言之流涕,坐起須人。此是苦不?」

大王答曰:「實是大苦。」

「何謂病苦?人有四大和合而成其身。何謂四大?地大、水大、火大、風大。一大不調,百一病生,四大不調,四百四病,同時俱作。地大不調,舉身沉重;水大不調,

【English Translation】 These are the so-called eight sufferings.

'What is the suffering of birth? When a person dies, they do not know where their spirit will go. Before they are born, they experience the intermediate state (antarabhava), until the parents unite on the twenty-first day (three seven-day periods), and then they are conceived. In the first seven days, it is like thin yogurt; in the second seven days, it is like thick yogurt; in the third seven days, it is like solidified ghee; in the fourth seven days, it is like a lump of flesh; in the fifth seven days, the five organs are formed, and the skillful wind enters the abdomen, blowing the body; in the sixth seven days, the six senses begin to develop, in the mother's womb, below the raw stomach and above the cooked stomach. When the mother eats a cup of hot food, it pours over the body like entering a boiling pot; when the mother drinks a cup of cold water, it is like ice cutting the body; when the mother is full, it presses the body, causing unspeakable pain; when the mother is hungry, the abdomen is empty, like being hung upside down, enduring immeasurable suffering. When the month is full and the time of birth arrives, the head faces the birth canal, and the intense pain is like two stones squeezing a mountain; at the time of birth, the mother is in danger and the father is afraid. When the baby is born and falls on the grass, the body is tender and soft, and the touch of the grass is like stepping on swords, and suddenly the baby cries out loudly. Is this suffering?'

Everyone said, 'This is great suffering.'

'What is the suffering of old age? Parents raise their children, and when they grow old, they think they are strong, carrying light loads and bearing heavy ones, without measuring their strength. When it is cold, they are extremely cold; when it is hot, they are extremely hot; when they are hungry, they are extremely hungry; when they are full, they are extremely full, without moderation. Gradually, they reach old age, their hair turns white, their teeth fall out, their eyes become blurred, their hearing declines, the period of strength passes and the period of decline arrives, their skin loosens, their faces wrinkle, their joints ache all over, walking is difficult and extremely painful, sitting and standing require assistance, they are filled with sorrow and grief, their consciousness gradually fades, they forget things quickly, their lifespan decreases day by day, they weep when they speak of it, and they need help to sit and stand. Is this suffering?'

The Great King replied, 'Indeed, it is great suffering.'

'What is the suffering of illness? A person's body is composed of the Four Great Elements (Mahabhuta). What are the Four Great Elements? Earth Element (Dadi-dhatu), Water Element (Apo-dhatu), Fire Element (Tejo-dhatu), and Wind Element (Vayo-dhatu). If one element is out of balance, one hundred and one diseases will arise. If all four elements are out of balance, four hundred and four diseases will arise simultaneously. If the Earth Element is out of balance, the whole body will feel heavy; if the Water Element is out of balance,


舉身膀腫;火大不調,舉身蒸熱;風大不調,舉身掘強,百節苦痛,猶被杖楚。四大進退,手足不任,氣力虛竭,坐起須人,口燥唇燋,筋斷鼻坼,目不見色,耳不聞聲,不凈流出,身臥其上,心懷苦惱,言輒悲哀,六親在側,晝夜看視初不休息,甘膳美食,入口皆苦。此是苦不?」

答言:「實是大苦。」

「何謂死苦?人死之時,四百四病,同時俱作,四大欲散,魂魄不安。欲死之時,刀風解形,無處不痛,白汗流出,兩手摸空,室家內外,在其左右,憂悲涕泣,痛徹骨髓,不能自勝。死者去之,風去氣絕,火滅身冷,風先火次。魂靈去矣,身體侹直,無所復知。旬日之間,肉壞血流,膀脹爛臭,甚不可道,棄之曠野,眾鳥啖食,肉盡骨幹,髑髏異處。此是苦不?」

答言:「實是大苦。」

「何謂恩愛別苦?室家內外,兄弟妻子,共相戀慕,一朝破亡,為人抄劫,各自分張,父東子西,母南女北,非唯一處,為人奴婢,各自悲呼,心內斷絕,窈窈冥冥,無有相見之期。此是苦不?」

答言:「實是大苦。」

「何謂所求不得苦?家有財錢,散用追求,大官吏民,望得富貴,勤苦求之,求之不止,會遇得之,而作邊境令長。未經幾時,貪取民物,為人告言,一朝有事,檻車

At the time of death, the four hundred and four diseases arise simultaneously, the four great elements are about to disperse, the soul is restless. At the time of death, the wind of the knife dismembers the body, there is no place without pain, cold sweat flows out, both hands grope in the air, family members are around, weeping with sorrow, the pain pierces the bones, one cannot control oneself. The dying person departs, the wind dissipates, breath ceases, the fire extinguishes, the body becomes cold, the wind goes first, then the fire. The soul departs, the body becomes stiff, and one knows nothing more. Within days, the flesh decays and blood flows, the body swells and rots, it is extremely unpleasant to describe, it is abandoned in the wilderness, eaten by birds, the flesh is gone, only bones remain, the skull is separated from the body. Is this suffering?』 The answer: 『Indeed, it is great suffering.』 『What is the suffering of separation from loved ones? Family members, brothers, wives, and children, cherish each other, but suddenly disaster strikes, they are robbed and scattered, father to the east, son to the west, mother to the south, daughter to the north, not just in one place, reduced to slaves, each cries out in sorrow, the heart is broken, the future is bleak, there is no hope of reunion. Is this suffering?』 The answer: 『Indeed, it is great suffering.』 『What is the suffering of not obtaining what one seeks? One spends money and effort to pursue official positions or to associate with powerful people in the hope of gaining wealth and status, working diligently to pursue it without end, but even if one obtains it, one only becomes a minor official in a remote area. Before long, one is accused of貪取民物 (greedily taking the people's property), and once something happens, one is put in a prison cart』


載去,欲殺之時,憂苦無量,不知死活何日。此是苦不?」

答曰:「實是大苦。」

「何謂怨憎會苦?世人薄俗,共居愛慾之中,共諍不急之事,更相殺害,遂成大怨,各自相避,隱藏無地,各磨刀錯箭挾弓持杖,恐畏相見,會遇迮道相逢,各自張弓㴻箭,兩刀相向,不知勝負是誰,當爾之時,怖畏無量。此是苦不?」

答曰:「實是大苦。」

「何謂憂悲惱苦?人生在世,長命者乃至百歲,短命者胞胎傷墮。長命之者,與其百歲,夜消其半,余有五十年;在醉酒疾病,不知作人,以減五歲;小時愚癡;十五年中,未知禮儀;年過八十,老鈍無智,耳聾目冥,無有法則,復減二十年;已九十年,過余有十歲之中,多諸憂愁,天下欲亂時亦愁,天下旱時亦愁,天下大水亦愁,天下大霜亦愁,天下不熟亦愁,室家內外多諸病痛亦愁,持家財物治生恐失亦愁,官家百調未輸亦愁,家人遭縣官事閉繫牢獄未知出期亦愁,兄弟、妻子遠行未歸亦愁,居家窮寒無有衣食亦愁,比舍村落有事亦愁,社稷不辦亦愁,室家死亡無有財物、殯葬亦愁,至春時種作無有犛牛亦愁,如是種種憂悲,常無樂時,至其節日,共相集聚,應當歡樂,方共悲涕相向。此是苦不?」

答曰:「實是大苦。」

Is this suffering?』 The answer was: 『Indeed, it is great suffering.』 『What is meant by the suffering of unwanted encounters (怨憎會苦)? People in the world are shallow and vulgar, living together in the midst of love and desire, arguing over trivial matters, even killing each other, thus forming great grudges, each avoiding the other, with no place to hide. Each sharpens knives and arrows, carrying bows and staffs, fearing to meet. Meeting on a narrow road, they draw their bows and aim their arrows, two knives facing each other, not knowing who will win or lose. At that time, the fear is immeasurable. Is this suffering?』 The answer was: 『Indeed, it is great suffering.』 『What is meant by the suffering of sorrow and frustration (憂悲惱苦)? A person living in the world, the long-lived may live to be a hundred years old, the short-lived may die in the womb. Being drunk and sick, not knowing how to be a person, reduces it by five years. Being foolish in childhood, for fifteen years, not knowing etiquette. After eighty years old, being old and dull with no wisdom, deaf and blind, with no rules to follow, reduces it by another twenty years. ,五王及諸群臣,會中數千萬人,聞說諸苦諦,心開意悟,即得須陀洹道,皆大歡喜,作禮而去。

四王俱白普安王言:「大王真是大權菩薩,化道我等,令得道跡,大王之恩。我本觀諸宮殿,心情愛著,不能遠離,今睹宮殿,如視穢廁,無可愛者。」即舍王位付弟,出家為道,修諸功德,日日不惓。

四位國王一起對普安王(Puan Wang)說:『大王真是具有大權力的菩薩(bodhisattva),教化引導我們,使我們證得道跡(marga,道路,此處指修行之路),大王的恩德。我們原本觀看各種宮殿,內心充滿愛戀執著,不能遠離,現在再看這些宮殿,就像看骯髒的廁所一樣,沒有什麼值得喜愛的。』於是他們捨棄王位交給弟弟,出家修行,修習各種功德,日日不懈怠。

【English Translation】 English version: The five kings and all the ministers, along with several million people in the assembly, upon hearing the exposition of the various duhkha-satya (truths of suffering), experienced enlightenment in their hearts and immediately attained the srota-apanna (stream-enterer) path. They were all greatly delighted, paid their respects, and departed.

The four kings together said to King Puan (Puan Wang): 'Great King, you are truly a bodhisattva (bodhisattva) of great power, transforming and guiding us, enabling us to attain the marga (path, here referring to the path of practice). Such is the Great King's grace. Originally, when we beheld the various palaces, our hearts were filled with love and attachment, unable to part from them. Now, when we look at these palaces, it is as if we are looking at filthy latrines, with nothing to be loved.' Thereupon, they relinquished their royal positions to their younger brothers, renounced their homes to pursue the path, cultivated various merits, and were diligent day after day.
