聞如是:
一時,佛在羅閱祇耆阇崛山中,時與五百沙門俱,皆阿羅漢,平旦皆被袈裟持缽入城丐食。
時城中有四姓豪貴家,國中第一,所居高燥,舍宅樓觀甚好,垣墻周匝七重門。四姓豪家字檀尼迦柰,有一子字制。年十六,父檀尼迦柰歿,故制獨與母居。
佛時到其家丐食,時制在內第三門住,遙見佛來,制即念言:「是人何壹端正絕好乃爾!好如明月珠,光明如日月,其色如黃金,如月十五日盛滿。」
時佛住于門外,制便走入語母言:「我見一人來,大端正絕妙天下無有輩,我生以來未曾見人如是,今在門住欲乞丐。」
制語母:「當丐之。」
其母大慳貪不肯丐與,制言:「母當哀用我故,丐與是人;與是人者,如病者得良醫。」制復言:「與是人者,名字達于天上天下,是人今續在外住。」
其母復不肯丐,制數數語母不止。母便恚,語制言:「汝嬈我不止者,汝令我煩亂。」母言:「是人不用是乞丐故來,但欲欺調汝耳。今汝小癡兒,當何等知?汝所索不止者,會得

【English Translation】 English version Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak) in Rāmagṛha (Rajgir), together with five hundred Śrāmaṇas (monastics), all of whom were Arhats (enlightened beings). Early in the morning, they all wore their kasayas (robes) and carried their alms bowls, entering the city to beg for food. At that time, there were four wealthy and noble families in the city, the wealthiest in the country. They lived in high and dry places, with very beautiful houses and pavilions, surrounded by seven layers of walls and gates. These four wealthy families were named Dhanikaṇātha, and they had a son named Śīla. When Śīla was sixteen years old, his father Dhanikaṇātha passed away, so Śīla lived alone with his mother. When the Buddha arrived at their house to beg for food, Śīla was standing at the third gate inside. Seeing the Buddha from afar, Śīla immediately thought: 'How can this person be so upright and exquisite! He is like a bright moon pearl, his light like the sun and moon, his color like gold, as full as the moon on the fifteenth day.' At that time, the Buddha was standing outside the gate. Śīla then ran inside and told his mother: 'I saw a person coming, extremely upright and exquisite, unparalleled in the world. I have never seen anyone like this since I was born. He is now standing at the gate, wanting to beg for food.' Śīla said to his mother: 'We should give alms to him.' His mother was very stingy and unwilling to give. Śīla said: 'Mother, please have pity on me, and give alms to this person for my sake; giving alms to this person is like a sick person getting a good doctor.' Śīla further said: 'Giving alms to this person, his name will be known throughout heaven and earth. This person is still standing outside.' His mother was still unwilling to give alms. Śīla repeatedly spoke to his mother without stopping. His mother then became angry and said to Śīla: 'If you keep disturbing me, you will make me upset.' His mother said: 'This person did not come to beg for food, but only wants to deceive and tease you. You are just a little child, what can you know? If you keep asking for it, you will eventually get'
我捶杖乃止耳。」
佛預知其母慳貪,佛便放威神徹照七重門內。制見佛光明心大歡喜,制即復到母所,啟語言:「愚人不知佈施,譬如盲人墮火中,其人但坐無目故。世間人但坐慳貪,不信佈施,后當得其禍。人心念惡、口言惡、身行惡,愚癡不信佛、不信經、不信比丘僧,死後皆墮地獄中餓鬼畜生中。人不慳貪,信佈施,后得其福,身行善、口言善、心念善,自得其福其人家常當與,智者相隨令人有智。」
制言:「母不肯丐與者,自持我今日飯分來,我寧一日不食。哀我疾持來,我欲與是人,恐是人棄我去。是人棄我去,是人難值。」
其母復不肯與,制便自往取飯分,復取所著好衣,持去至佛所,前以頭面著佛足,卻住叉手,白佛言:「持我所有衣被、飯,愿上佛。」佛默然不應。
制復白言:「今佛是天上、天下人師,當哀度脫我曹,愿為我受之,當令我得福。」如是者三,佛便受之,制即大歡喜。
佛語制言:「今諸慳貪者汝皆伏之,今日汝施與佛衣被、飯食,使汝心中諸欲愿者,亦皆得之。」
制大歡喜,復白佛言:「我所可願者,亦不求作第二忉利天王釋,亦不求作第七天王梵,亦不求世世豪貴,愿使我智慧光明如佛。」
佛言:「大善!諸所愿者皆令

制說:『母親如果不肯施捨給他們,就自己拿著我今天的飯食來,我寧願一天不吃。可憐我,快點拿來,我想給這個人,恐怕這個人拋棄我走了。這個人拋棄我走了,這樣的人很難遇到。』
他的母親仍然不肯給,制便自己去取飯食,又取了自己穿的好衣服,拿著去到佛陀那裡,先用頭面觸碰佛足,然後退後站立,合掌,對佛陀說:『拿著我所有的衣服、被子、飯食,希望獻給佛陀。』佛陀沉默不語。
制又說道:『現在佛陀是天上、天下人的導師,應當慈悲救度我們,希望您能接受我的供養,讓我得到福報。』這樣說了三次,佛陀便接受了,制非常歡喜。
佛陀對制說:『現在所有慳吝貪婪的人你都降伏了,今天你施捨給佛陀衣服、被子、飯食,使你心中所有的願望,也都能實現。』
制非常歡喜,又對佛陀說:『我所希望的,也不求做第二忉利天王釋(帝釋天),也不求做第七天王梵(大梵天),也不求世世代代豪門顯貴,希望我的智慧光明能像佛陀一樣。』
佛陀說:『太好了!你所有的願望都會實現。』
【English Translation】 English version: 『I will stop only when I put down my staff.』
The Buddha, foreseeing his mother's stinginess and greed, emitted a majestic light that illuminated the sevenfold gates. Upon seeing the Buddha's light, Zhi (name) was overjoyed. He immediately returned to his mother and advised her, 『Foolish people do not know about giving, like a blind person falling into fire, who can only sit there because they have no eyes. Worldly people, due to their stinginess and greed, do not believe in giving, and will suffer the consequences later. If people's minds think evil, their mouths speak evil, and their bodies do evil, and if they foolishly do not believe in the Buddha, the Sutras, or the Bhikshu Sangha (monastic community), they will all fall into hell, the realm of hungry ghosts, or the animal realm after death. If people are not stingy and believe in giving, they will receive blessings later. If their bodies do good, their mouths speak good, and their minds think good, they will naturally receive blessings. Such families should always give, and associating with the wise will make one wise.』
Zhi (name) said, 『If mother is unwilling to give to them, then take my portion of food for today. I would rather go without food for a day. Pity me, bring it quickly, I want to give it to this person, lest this person abandon me and leave. If this person abandons me and leaves, such a person is hard to come by.』
His mother still refused to give. Zhi (name) then went to take his portion of food himself, and also took his best clothes, and went to the Buddha. He first touched the Buddha's feet with his head and face, then stepped back, stood with his palms together, and said to the Buddha, 『I offer all my clothes, bedding, and food, hoping to offer them to the Buddha.』 The Buddha remained silent.
Zhi (name) then said, 『Now the Buddha is the teacher of beings in heaven and on earth, and should compassionately deliver us. I hope you will accept my offering, so that I may receive blessings.』 He said this three times, and the Buddha accepted it. Zhi (name) was overjoyed.
The Buddha said to Zhi (name), 『Now you have subdued all the stingy and greedy. Today you have given clothes, bedding, and food to the Buddha, so that all the desires in your heart will also be fulfilled.』
Zhi (name) was overjoyed and said to the Buddha, 『What I wish for is not to become the second Shakra (ruler of the Trayastrimsha Heaven), nor to become Brahma (ruler of the seventh heaven), nor to be wealthy and noble in every lifetime, but I wish that my wisdom and light may be like the Buddha's.』
The Buddha said, 『Excellent! All your wishes will be fulfilled.』
得之。」
第二天王釋聞制語,即在佛后叉手住,天王釋便於佛前,語謂制言:「汝今日持小飯食、衣被與佛,便欲求作佛者不能得也,十劫、百劫、千劫、萬劫、億劫,汝尚未能得作佛。」
制報天王釋言:「我亦不用一飯食故欲得作佛,我常當持善心精進不懈,求佛不止,會當作佛。」
天王釋報制言:「汝持四寶須彌山,汝慈心念天下人民,千萬劫億萬劫,汝尚未能得佛也。」
制復報天王釋言:「譬如匠師持斧入山索樹木,會當擇取好直者,會當可意乃取耳。我不用一飯食、衣被故求作佛也。」
天王釋復語制言:「汝欲求佛者劇苦,汝不如求作第七梵,若第二忉利天王釋,汝欲求作佛,難得也。」
制復報天王釋言:「汝寧見閻浮利內不?」
天王釋言:「見之。」
制言:「滿其中大火上至天,持身投其中,我會當求作佛終不止。」
天王釋言:「汝滿閻浮利地內其中火,是中有人民畜生及蠕動之類,汝不當殺之,汝口言惡、心念惡,死當入地獄中,汝當那得作佛?」
制報天王釋:「世間人民及蠕動,我持慈心皆付彌勒佛,彌勒佛自當度脫之,我求佛道會不止。」
制復報天王釋言:「第七梵眾、第二天王釋,所居止處會當衰敗

天王釋(Śakra,帝釋天)說:『你讓閻浮利(Jambudvipa,我們所居住的這個世界)的土地裡充滿火焰,其中有人民、畜生以及蠕動的生物,你不應該殺害他們,你口出惡言、心懷惡念,死後會墮入地獄,你又怎麼能成佛呢?』
制(name of a person,人名)回答天王釋(Śakra,帝釋天)說:『世間人民以及蠕動的生物,我用慈悲心都託付給彌勒佛(Maitreya,未來佛),彌勒佛(Maitreya,未來佛)自然會度脫他們,我求佛道永不停止。』
制(name of a person,人名)又回答天王釋(Śakra,帝釋天)說:『第七梵眾天(Brahma,色界天之一)、第二天王釋(Śakra,帝釋天,欲界天之一),他們所居住的地方終究會衰敗。

The next day, King Śakra (Śakra, the lord of the devas) heard what Zhi (name of a person) said, and stood behind the Buddha with his hands clasped. King Śakra (Śakra, the lord of the devas) then spoke to Zhi (name of a person) in front of the Buddha, saying: 'Today you offer a small amount of food and clothing to the Buddha, and you wish to become a Buddha. This is impossible. For ten kalpas, a hundred kalpas, a thousand kalpas, ten thousand kalpas, a hundred million kalpas, you will still not be able to become a Buddha.'
Zhi (name of a person) replied to King Śakra (Śakra, the lord of the devas): 'I do not wish to become a Buddha because of a single meal. I will always maintain a good heart, be diligent and unremitting, and seek Buddhahood without ceasing. Eventually, I will become a Buddha.'
King Śakra (Śakra, the lord of the devas) said to Zhi (name of a person): 'Even if you were to offer a Mount Sumeru (Mount Sumeru, the sacred mountain in Buddhist cosmology) made of the four treasures, and you compassionately think of all the people in the world, for millions and billions of kalpas, you still would not be able to become a Buddha.'
Zhi (name of a person) again replied to King Śakra (Śakra, the lord of the devas): 'It is like a craftsman taking an axe into the mountains to find wood. He will always choose the good and straight ones, and he will always choose the ones that please him. I do not seek to become a Buddha because of a single meal or clothing.'
King Śakra (Śakra, the lord of the devas) again said to Zhi (name of a person): 'It is extremely difficult for you to seek Buddhahood. You might as well seek to become the Seventh Brahma (Brahma, one of the heavens in the Form Realm), or the Second King Śakra of the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven (Śakra, the lord of the devas, one of the heavens in the Desire Realm). It is difficult for you to seek Buddhahood.'
Zhi (name of a person) again replied to King Śakra (Śakra, the lord of the devas): 'Have you seen inside Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, the world we live in)?'
King Śakra (Śakra, the lord of the devas) said: 'I have seen it.'
Zhi (name of a person) said: 'If Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, the world we live in) were filled with a great fire reaching up to the sky, and I threw myself into it, I would still seek Buddhahood and never stop.'
King Śakra (Śakra, the lord of the devas) said: 'If you fill the land of Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, the world we live in) with fire, there will be people, animals, and crawling creatures in it. You should not kill them. If you speak evil words and have evil thoughts, you will fall into hell after death. How can you become a Buddha?'
Zhi (name of a person) replied to King Śakra (Śakra, the lord of the devas): 'I entrust all the people and crawling creatures in the world to Maitreya Buddha (Maitreya, the future Buddha) with a compassionate heart. Maitreya Buddha (Maitreya, the future Buddha) will naturally liberate them. I will never stop seeking the path to Buddhahood.'
Zhi (name of a person) again replied to King Śakra (Śakra, the lord of the devas): 'The places where the Seventh Brahma Heaven (Brahma, one of the heavens in the Form Realm) and the Second King Śakra (Śakra, the lord of the devas, one of the heavens in the Desire Realm) reside will eventually decline.'
,皆當歸死,無有脫不死者。」
天王釋便叉手報制言:「卿持心堅乃如是,念欲求佛不止者,卿會得作佛。」
制復報天王釋言:「汝莫持汝天上意,自貢高也,復有勝汝者,我持善心精進不懈,求佛不止,會當得作佛。」天王釋便默然無所復語。
佛便語制:「汝前後所承事凡六萬佛,汝常當愿求作佛,汝常持心精進承事諸佛,卻後二百億萬劫,汝不復更地獄餓鬼畜生中,卻後二百億萬劫竟,汝當作遮迦越王,當有十億小國皆屬汝,汝當領四天下當飛行。汝所行當正,壽盡當上生第七梵天、第四兜術天,天上壽盡,當復下生作遮迦越王,壽盡當覆上生第七梵天。如是上下百億萬劫竟,汝當作佛字須彌迦羅,當度脫天上、天下人民,汝生下地當照萬二千億天地,上至二十八天上,天地皆為大動,夜明如日出,人民皆壽七千億歲。汝身當長二百丈,當有萬一千城,城皆四百八十里,城皆板著之,皆刻鏤金銀、琉璃、水精、珊瑚、車𤦲、馬瑙七寶。
「汝作佛時,當再會說經,一會時有六千億沙門皆得阿羅漢;第二會說經時,有四千億沙門皆得阿羅漢。當爾時,人民無有偷盜者,男子、女人皆同一心無有惡者,亦無山林溪谷,地皆平正,人民無有疾病憂苦,皆安樂,所居皆自守。天日三雨裁淹

佛陀於是對制說:『你前後供養了六萬尊佛,你常發願求成佛,你常以精進之心供養諸佛,在經歷二百億萬劫之後,你將不再墮入地獄、餓鬼、畜生道中。二百億萬劫之後,你將成為轉輪聖王(Chakkavatti-raja,擁有統治四天下的輪寶的理想統治者),將有十億小國歸屬於你,你將統治四天下,能夠飛行。你的行為應當端正,壽命終結后將往生到第七梵天、第四兜率天(Tushita Heaven,彌勒菩薩居住的凈土),在天上壽命終結后,將再次下生為轉輪聖王,壽命終結后將再次往生到第七梵天。如此上下經歷百億萬劫之後,你將成佛,佛號為須彌迦羅(Sumerukara Buddha),將度脫天上、天下的人民。你降生到地上時,光明將照耀萬二千億天地,上至二十八天,天地都將為之震動,夜晚明亮如白晝,人民的壽命都將有七千億歲。你的身軀將高二百丈,將有一萬一千座城池,每座城池都有四百八十里,城池都用木板建造,並雕刻著金銀、琉璃、水精、珊瑚、車𤦲(一種寶石)、瑪瑙等七寶。
『你成佛時,將有兩次法會說法,第一次法會時有六千億沙門(Sramana,佛教出家修行者)證得阿羅漢(Arhat,斷盡煩惱,證得解脫的聖者);第二次法會說法時,有四千億沙門證得阿羅漢。那時,人民沒有偷盜的行為,男子、女人都同心同德,沒有邪惡之心,也沒有山林溪谷,大地都平坦正直,人民沒有疾病憂愁,都安樂自在,所居住的地方都能自己守護。天日三次降雨,雨水剛好淹沒』
【English Translation】 English version: 'All beings are subject to death; none can escape it.'
Then, King Shakra (Śakra, ruler of the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven) clasped his hands and said to Zhi: 'Your resolve is so firm, and your mind is set on attaining Buddhahood. You will surely become a Buddha.'
Zhi replied to King Shakra: 'Do not be arrogant because you are a celestial being. There are those who are superior to you. I am diligently and unremittingly seeking Buddhahood with a virtuous mind, and I will surely become a Buddha.' King Shakra then remained silent and said nothing more.
The Buddha then said to Zhi: 'You have served a total of sixty thousand Buddhas in the past. You have always vowed to attain Buddhahood. You have always served the Buddhas with a diligent mind. After two hundred billion kalpas (aeons), you will no longer be reborn in hell, as a hungry ghost, or as an animal. After two hundred billion kalpas, you will become a Chakravarti-raja (Chakkavatti-raja, a universal monarch who possesses the wheel-turning jewel and rules the four continents), and you will have ten billion small kingdoms under your rule. You will rule the four continents and be able to fly. Your conduct should be upright. When your lifespan ends, you will be reborn in the Seventh Brahma Heaven and the Fourth Tushita Heaven (Tushita Heaven, the pure land where Maitreya Bodhisattva resides). When your lifespan in heaven ends, you will be reborn as a Chakravarti-raja again. When your lifespan ends, you will be reborn in the Seventh Brahma Heaven again. After a hundred billion kalpas in this cycle, you will become a Buddha named Sumerukara Buddha, and you will liberate the beings in heaven and on earth. When you are born on earth, your light will illuminate twelve thousand billion worlds, reaching up to the twenty-eighth heaven. The heavens and the earth will shake greatly, and the night will be as bright as day. The people will live for seven hundred billion years. Your body will be two hundred zhang (ancient Chinese unit of measurement) tall, and there will be eleven thousand cities, each four hundred and eighty li (ancient Chinese unit of measurement) in circumference. The cities will all be built with wooden planks, carved with gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, coral, tridacna (a type of gemstone), and agate, the seven treasures.
'When you become a Buddha, there will be two assemblies for preaching the Dharma. In the first assembly, six thousand billion Sramanas (Śrāmaṇa, Buddhist renunciates) will attain Arhatship (Arhat, a liberated being who has extinguished all defilements). In the second assembly, four thousand billion Sramanas will attain Arhatship. At that time, there will be no thieves among the people. Men and women will be of one mind and without evil. There will be no mountains, forests, streams, or valleys. The earth will be flat and upright. The people will be free from disease, sorrow, and suffering, and they will live in peace and protect their own dwellings. The sun and the sky will rain three times, and the water will just cover'
塵土,人慾議語皆大聚會,夏月則不暑,冬月則不寒皆得中適。
「汝教授精舍名為難提陀,若有男子、女人,持戒佈施與佛辟支佛阿羅漢,求作佛者皆可得佛。道不可不求,八方上下無有能窮極者,佛智慧如是,天下人不知生所從來,亦不知死趣何道。」
佛說經已,制及諸比丘僧,皆前以頭面著佛足,作禮而去。

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本: 在沒有塵土,人們的願望和言語都能匯聚的地方,夏天不會感到炎熱,冬天也不會感到寒冷,一切都恰到好處。
『你教授的精舍名為難提陀(Nandita),如果男女持戒佈施,供養佛、辟支佛(Pratyekabuddha)、阿羅漢(Arhat),並求證佛果,都能如願。道是不可不求的,無論八方上下,都沒有人能窮盡其奧妙。佛的智慧就是這樣,天下人不知道從何處來,也不知道死後會去向何方。』
佛說完這部經后,制(Zhi)以及各位比丘僧眾,都上前以頭面觸碰佛的腳,行禮后離去。
佛說《長者子制經》
【English Translation】 English version: Where there is no dust, and people's desires and words can all gather, there is no heat in summer, and no cold in winter; everything is just right.
『The monastery you teach in is named Nandita. If men and women uphold the precepts, practice generosity, and make offerings to the Buddha, Pratyekabuddha, and Arhats, and seek to attain Buddhahood, they can all achieve their wish. The path is something that must be sought; in all directions, above and below, no one can exhaust its mysteries. The wisdom of the Buddha is like this: people in the world do not know where they come from, nor do they know where they go after death.』
After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, Zhi and all the Bhikshu (monks) approached, touched the Buddha's feet with their heads, paid their respects, and departed.
