一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。
佛告諸比丘言:「昔者有賈客,名阿鳩留,居處甚富,金銀珍寶,奴婢眾多。阿鳩留不信有後世生,作善不得善,作惡不得惡。阿鳩留言:『人死後身地外地、身水外水、身火外火、身風外風,身皆共和合,人死後終不復生也。人所作善惡,心所念、口所言、身所行,皆當棄捐,后不復生。』
「時,阿鳩留持財貨數千萬,與賈客五百人俱行。阿鳩留最尊豪相隨行賈客,當經劇道無水草處,所持糧食、水草皆已盡,行一日、二日不見水草,行三日、四日不見水草。賈客皆恐怖言:『今我皆悉當於此荒澤中餓死耶!』各自啼哭,呼父母妻子。

一時,佛陀在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。
佛陀告訴眾比丘:『過去有一位商人,名叫阿鳩留(Ajukulla),家境非常富有,擁有大量的金銀珍寶和奴婢。阿鳩留不相信有來世,認為行善不會得到善報,作惡也不會得到惡報。阿鳩留說:「人死後,身體的地歸還於外面的地,身體的水歸還於外面的水,身體的火歸還於外面的火,身體的風歸還於外面的風,身體的各個部分都回歸到原來的元素,人死後終究不會再復生。人所做的善惡,心中所想的、口中所說的、身上所行的,都會被拋棄,死後不會再有來生。」』
『當時,阿鳩留帶著價值數千萬的財物,與五百位商人一同出行。阿鳩留是最尊貴富有的人,隨行的商人們經過一段極其艱難的道路,那裡沒有水草,他們所攜帶的糧食和水草都已耗盡。走了一天、兩天都沒有見到水草,走了三天、四天還是沒有見到水草。商人們都感到非常恐懼,說:「我們現在都要在這荒涼的沙漠中餓死了嗎!」各自啼哭,呼喊父母妻兒。』

The Buddha Speaks the Ajukulla Sutra
The Sengyou Record states that this is a classical translation by An Shigao, now included in the Han Record.
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti (Savatthi).
The Buddha told the assembled Bhikkhus (monks): 'In the past, there was a merchant named Ajukulla (Ajukulla), who was very wealthy, possessing much gold, silver, jewels, and many servants. Ajukulla did not believe in a future life, believing that doing good does not result in good, and doing evil does not result in evil. Ajukulla said: 'After a person dies, the earth of the body returns to the earth outside, the water of the body returns to the water outside, the fire of the body returns to the fire outside, the wind of the body returns to the wind outside. All the elements of the body combine and return to their original sources. After a person dies, they will never be reborn. The good and evil that a person does, what they think in their heart, what they say with their mouth, and what they do with their body, will all be discarded, and there will be no future life.'
'At that time, Ajukulla, carrying goods worth tens of millions, traveled with five hundred merchants. Ajukulla was the most honored and wealthy among them. The traveling merchants passed through an extremely difficult path where there was no water or grass. The food and water they carried were exhausted. They traveled for one day, two days, and saw no water or grass. They traveled for three days, four days, and still saw no water or grass. The merchants were all terrified, saying: 'Are we all going to starve to death in this desolate desert!' They wept and cried out for their parents, wives, and children.'
'Ajukulla sent riders in all directions to search for water and grass. Ajukulla himself saw a tree in the distance, with green leaves and abundant fruit. He thought that there should be water under this tree, so he went towards the tree. He saw a man, incomparably handsome, who saw Ajukulla riding towards him from afar and welcomed him, saying: 'Welcome, what are you seeking?' Ajukulla was very happy to see the man under the tree answer him, as if he had been reborn. The man under the tree asked: 'Where do you come from? Where do you want to go?' Ajukulla said: 'I want to save my life and the lives of five hundred followers.' The man under the tree asked: 'What do you seek?' Ajukulla said: 'I'
欲得水。』樹下人便舉右手,水從五指端出,如流泉,甚香味,語阿鳩留言:『自極飲。』飲已復從索飯,樹下人便舉右手,美食從指端出。
「阿鳩留得飽食已,便舉聲大啼哭。樹下人因問:『仁者啼哭為?』阿鳩留言:『我等伴五百人及畜生,從三四日以來,皆不得飲食,飢餓甚極,命在須臾,是故我啼哭耳。』樹下人語阿鳩留:『若行將五百人及畜生來,我悉為若飽之。』
「阿鳩留即馳行,呼伴人語之言:『勿復憂也,已得飲食處,隨我去來。』伴人大喜,便隨去到樹下,皆叉手,為樹下人作禮。樹下人問言:『欲何得?』人皆言:『大飢渴。』樹下人即復舉右手五指端,即復大水出,水如流泉,人馬畜生皆飲;復從索飯,樹下人復舉右手五指端,出名美飲食與之,五百人及畜生皆飽滿。
「樹下人因問:『五百人等,卿皆欲至到,何等求索?』賈人言:『我皆欲到大海,求索珍寶。』樹下人因問:『卿皆欲索珍寶者,便可從我手中出。』樹下人便舉右手,從五指端出金銀、水精、琉璃、珊瑚、虎魄、白珠,人便斂取,取各自重如去。

樹下的人便問:『你們五百人,都想要去哪裡,想要尋求什麼?』商人們說:『我們都想要去大海,尋求珍寶。』樹下的人便問:『你們都想要尋求珍寶,那就可以從我的手中得到。』樹下的人便舉起右手,從五個指尖流出黃金、白銀、水晶(water crystal)、琉璃(lapiz lazuli)、珊瑚(coral)、琥珀(amber)、白珠(white pearl),人們便收取這些珍寶,拿取各自認為足夠的份量后離去。
樹下的人對阿鳩留說:『拿著這些金銀回到家鄉,用來佈施給貧窮的人,想要吃飯的就給他們飯吃,想要金銀、錢財、衣服被子的就儘量給他們。讓道人們都為我祈福,讓我得到他們的祝福,讓我的手中……』
【English Translation】 English version: 'You want water.' The person under the tree then raised his right hand, and water flowed from the tips of his five fingers, like a flowing spring, very fragrant and sweet, and said to Ajouliu (name of a person): 'Drink to your heart's content.' After drinking, he asked for food again, and the person under the tree raised his right hand, and delicious food flowed from the tips of his fingers.
After Ajouliu (name of a person) had eaten and drunk his fill, he began to cry loudly. The person under the tree then asked: 'Why are you crying, benevolent one?' Ajouliu (name of a person) said: 'My five hundred companions and livestock have not had food or drink for three or four days, and are extremely hungry, their lives hanging by a thread, that is why I am crying.' The person under the tree said to Ajouliu (name of a person): 'If you can bring all five hundred people and livestock here, I can feed them all.'
Ajouliu (name of a person) immediately ran and told his companions: 'Do not worry anymore, I have found a place with food and drink, follow me.' The companions were overjoyed and followed him to the tree, where they all put their palms together and bowed to the person under the tree. The person under the tree asked: 'What do you want?' The people all said: 'We are very hungry and thirsty.' The person under the tree then raised his right hand again, and a large amount of water flowed from the tips of his five fingers, like a flowing spring, and the people and livestock all drank their fill; then they asked for food, and the person under the tree raised his right hand again, and various delicious foods flowed from the tips of his five fingers and gave it to them, and all five hundred people and livestock were full.
The person under the tree then asked: 'Where do you five hundred people want to go, and what do you seek?' The merchants said: 'We all want to go to the sea to seek treasures.' The person under the tree then asked: 'If you all want to seek treasures, then you can get them from my hand.' The person under the tree then raised his right hand, and gold, silver, water crystal (water crystal), lapiz lazuli (lapiz lazuli), coral (coral), amber (amber), and white pearl (white pearl) flowed from the tips of his five fingers, and the people took these treasures, taking as much as they thought was enough, and left.
The person under the tree said to Ajouliu (name of a person): 'Take this gold and silver back to your hometown, and use it to give to the poor, give food to those who want food, and give gold, silver, money, clothes, and bedding to those who want them as much as possible. Let the Taoists all pray for me, so that I may receive their blessings, so that my hand...'
出琦物,又多使我早脫此荒澤中。』
「阿鳩留聞此語大驚怖,便以頭面著地,問:『仁者為何等人乎?是天耶?龍耶?鬼神耶?是人耶?』
「樹下人言:『我亦非天、亦非龍、亦非鬼、亦非人,我是豪薜荔也。我前世時,於國中大貧窮,常在城門下坐,雖貧窮心凈潔,愛樂沙門道人,我貧窮不能施人,見他人佈施,代其喜。時迦葉佛般泥洹去,諸比丘來從我乞丐食,我應比丘言:「我無所有。」但遙指示城中,某家善可得飯,某家不善不可得飯。比丘乞來出,我見有所得,即歡喜。又迦葉佛般泥洹去,其國王名為基立,為迦葉佛起七寶塔,我輒持手著其上言:「令我得其福。」王上好物于佛塔,我輒持手著之言:「使我得其福。」但用貧故未曾齋,飯食無時又飲酒,是故死後,以作豪薜荔耳。但用我前世見人作善,代其歡喜,手著其物上,是故令我五指端在所出;但用生時未曾齋,故使我作是間薜荔。』
「阿鳩留自念言:『我前不信有後世生、作善不得善,作惡不得惡。今我眼見,是為審有後世,復生審有作善得善、作惡得惡。從今日以去,歸鄉里,快當作善,佈施與人,恣所求索,人有欲得金銀、珍寶、飲食、衣被者,皆與之,不逆人也。』

【English Translation】 English version: 'Appearing with wondrous things, and repeatedly helping me to escape from this desolate swamp early.' Āqiliu (name) hearing these words was greatly frightened, and prostrated with his head to the ground, asking: 'Benevolent one, what kind of being are you? Are you a deva (god)? A nāga (dragon)? A ghost or spirit? Are you a human?' The person under the tree said: 'I am neither a deva, nor a nāga, nor a ghost, nor a human; I am a Haobili (a tree spirit). In my previous life, I was very poor in the kingdom, and often sat under the city gate. Although poor, my heart was pure, and I loved śramaṇas (ascetics) and Daoists (Taoist practitioners). Because I was poor, I could not give alms to others, but when I saw others giving alms, I rejoiced on their behalf. At that time, Kāśyapa Buddha (one of the past seven Buddhas) entered Parinirvana (final passing away), and the bhikshus (ordained monks) came to me begging for food. I replied to the bhikshus, 「I have nothing.」 I only pointed remotely to the city, saying that a certain family was good at giving alms and could provide food, while another family was not good at giving alms and could not provide food. When the bhikshus returned with food, I rejoiced when I saw that they had received something. Also, when Kāśyapa Buddha entered Parinirvana, the king at that time, named Jili (name), built a seven-jeweled pagoda for Kāśyapa Buddha. I always touched it with my hand, saying, 「May I obtain the blessings from it.」 When the king placed good things on the pagoda, I always touched them with my hand, saying, 「May I obtain the blessings from it.」 But because of my poverty, I never fasted, and my meals were irregular, and I also drank alcohol. Therefore, after death, I became a Haobili. Only because in my previous life I saw others doing good deeds and rejoiced on their behalf, and touched those objects with my hand, my fingertips can produce treasures wherever they are; only because I never fasted during my lifetime, I became a Bili (a type of spirit) in this desolate place.' Āqiliu thought to himself: 'I used to not believe in the existence of future lives, nor that doing good would bring good results, and doing evil would bring evil results. Now I have seen it with my own eyes, there truly is a future life, and it is true that doing good brings good results and doing evil brings evil results. From today onwards, I will return to my hometown and do much good, giving alms to others, allowing them to ask for whatever they want. If anyone wants gold, silver, treasures, food, or clothing, I will give it to them, and I will not go against anyone.' Āqiliu returned to his hometown and told the people of the country: 'Who'

「后佛母忽故,生忉利天。時佛天上為母說經。說經已,佛母及諸天無央數,皆得須陀洹道。佛因見阿鳩留佈施與人,遠在天帝釋邊,四百八十里坐;復見乞丐女人,持米粥與沙門摩訶迦葉,在天帝釋邊第三座,又勝餘天五事。佛見悉皆識知,即遙呼阿鳩留言:『佈施善人來相見。』阿鳩留即來前,持頭面著地,為佛作禮,白佛言:『我佈施大眾多,但得凡人耳,不得須陀洹、斯陀含、阿那含、阿羅漢、辟支佛,佛道也。今見乞丐女人,持米粥與沙門摩訶迦葉,今世在帝釋邊第三坐,又勝餘天五事。』人持小物與摩訶迦葉,得福乃爾,是故身自致豪貴如此。」
天便為佛,作禮而去。

天人便向佛作禮,然後離去。

【English Translation】 English version 『If anyone desires gold, silver, jewels, clothing, or food and drink, let them ask for whatever they want and come and take it.』 He gave in this way countless times, feeding eighty-four thousand ascetics every day, so much so that the water from the kitchen flowed out like a tide, and people could travel by boat. Ajukulla, with utmost sincerity, performed good deeds, and after death, he ascended to the second heaven of Tāvatiṃsa (Thirty-three Heavens) and became a deva (god), four hundred and eighty miles away from the seat of Śakra (Lord Indra).
『In his country, there was a beggar woman named 㜗, who, with a kind heart, offered a handful of rice porridge to the śramaṇa (ascetic) Mahākāśyapa. After her death, this woman was also born in the Tāvatiṃsa heaven as a deva, sitting in the third seat next to Śakra, surpassing the other devas in five aspects. What are the five aspects? First, longevity; second, beauty; third, happiness; fourth, wisdom; fifth, majestic power, surpassing the other devas.
『Later, Buddha's mother suddenly passed away and was born in the Tāvatiṃsa heaven. At that time, the Buddha preached the Dharma to his mother in heaven. After the preaching, Buddha's mother and countless devas attained the path of Srota-āpanna (Stream-enterer). The Buddha then saw Ajukulla, who had given alms to people, sitting far away next to Śakra, four hundred and eighty miles away; and he also saw the beggar woman, who had offered rice porridge to the śramaṇa Mahākāśyapa, sitting in the third seat next to Śakra, surpassing the other devas in five aspects. The Buddha, seeing all this, fully understood and called out to Ajukulla from afar, saying, 『Benevolent one who gives alms, come and see me.』 Ajukulla immediately came before the Buddha, prostrated himself with his head touching the ground, and said to the Buddha, 『I have given alms to many people, but I have only attained the fruit of an ordinary person, not Srota-āpanna (Stream-enterer), Sakṛdāgāmin (Once-returner), Anāgāmin (Non-returner), Arhat (Worthy One), Pratyekabuddha (Solitary Buddha), or the path of Buddhahood. Now I see the beggar woman, who offered rice porridge to the śramaṇa Mahākāśyapa, in this life sitting in the third seat next to Śakra, surpassing the other devas in five aspects.』 People offering small things to Mahākāśyapa receive such great blessings, and therefore, one can attain such wealth and nobility.』
The deva then paid homage to the Buddha and departed.
