聞如是:
一時佛在羅閱祇耆阇崛山中,與尊弟子千二百五十人俱,及諸菩薩、清信士女,一切普會,圍繞說法。
佛告大眾:「彼有長者,名曰音悅,財富無數。年老無子,以為愁戚。雖其然者,宿福所追,其報有四:一者、夫人產男,端正無比;二者、五百白馬同時生駒;三者、國王遣使者拜授金印;四者、五百寶船同時俱至。」
阿難白佛:「何等寶船而俱至乎?」
佛告阿難:「長者音悅群族殊多,先此之時遣五百人乘船入海,既獲眾寶,安隱還家,是故如來說此四福同時普集。長者歡喜,心自念言:『天降福祚,集我之庭。當作甘饌,室族相慶。』即如所言,興作大廚。娛樂盡歡,鼓樂、絃歌聲聞于天。是時四大天王、釋梵天王、諸龍、鬼王、阿須倫王、一切神王,各與眷屬側塞虛空,看此長者,福德無量。
「如來神達,知此長者歡喜踴躍。因其歡悅,欲往稱歎,若其開解,可殖福栽。如來應時歌頌吉祥八種之音,往于門外而說頌曰:
「『長者今日, 吉祥集至, 一切福應, 室族吉利。 昔所殖福,

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of Elder Yinyue Spoken by the Buddha
Translated by Upasaka Zhi Qian of Yuezhi during the Wu Dynasty
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was in Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak) in Rāmagṛha (Rajgir), together with 1,250 venerable disciples, as well as various Bodhisattvas, faithful laymen and laywomen, all gathered together, surrounding the Buddha and listening to the Dharma.
The Buddha told the assembly: 'There is an elder there named Yinyue, who possesses countless riches. He is old but has no son, and is worried about this. Even so, due to the blessings he accumulated in the past, he receives four rewards: first, his wife gives birth to a son, who is incomparably handsome; second, five hundred white horses simultaneously give birth to foals; third, the king sends a messenger to bestow upon him a golden seal; fourth, five hundred treasure ships arrive at the same time.'
Ananda asked the Buddha: 'What kind of treasure ships arrive at the same time?'
The Buddha told Ananda: 'Elder Yinyue's clan is very large. Previously, he sent five hundred people by ship into the sea. They obtained many treasures and returned home safely. Therefore, the Tathagata says that these four blessings gather at the same time. The elder is very happy and thinks to himself: 'This is a blessing bestowed by heaven, gathered in my home. I should prepare a sumptuous feast and celebrate with my family.' So, as he thought, he began to prepare a grand banquet. Everyone enjoyed themselves to the fullest, and the sounds of drums, music, and songs reached the heavens. At this time, the Four Heavenly Kings (Caturmahārājakayikas), Śakra-Brahmā (King of Devas and Brahma), the Dragon Kings, the Ghost Kings, the Asura Kings, and all the Divine Kings, each with their retinues, filled the sky, watching this elder, whose merit and virtue are immeasurable.
'The Tathagata, with his divine powers, knows that this elder is joyful and elated. Because of his joy, he wants to go and praise him. If he can awaken and understand because of this, he can plant fields of blessings. The Tathagata then sang auspicious sounds in eight ways, went to the gate, and spoke this verse:'
'Elder today, Auspicious gatherings arrive, All blessings respond, Family auspicious. Past planted blessings,'
其報有四, 大小歡悅, 世間無比。 諸天龍神, 咸為降伏, 快哉長者, 猥獲吉福。 如春種禾, 秋則成熟, 先作后受, 影報隨逐。』
「爾時長者聞佛德音,五情逸豫,歡喜而出。見佛恭肅,即便啟言:『瞿曇沙門實為神妙!知我室族吉祥無量。枉屈尊神,來相讚歎。』即以好白㲲直金千萬兩,奉上如來。佛即受之,而為達嚫。
「佛告長者:『財有五危。世人不知,慳吝、貪惜,不能減割,以周窮乏。壽終神逝,棄財世間。汝今能爾,必獲影報。所生之處,福自歸身。』
「長者白佛:『何等五危?』
「佛即報言:『一者大火,燒之不覺;二者大水,漂沒無常;三者縣官,奪取無道;四者惡子,用度無限;五者盜賊,所見劫奪。五事一至,不可抑制。譬如有人違犯王法,閉在牢獄,應當誅戮。財物沒入其官,豈復能卻之乎?又復譬如阿難邠坻,財寶無數。國王奪取,主不能制,亦非神龍所能止之。所以者何?以其前世佈施七悔,是以今世七富七貧。』長者聞說,益增踴躍。於是如來忽然還到耆阇崛山。」
爾時國內有尼揵異道人,名曰不蘭迦葉,聽聞如來詣長者家,歌頌一偈,猥得長者千萬兩金,心懷悁嫉,心即念言:「瞿曇沙

佛陀回答說:『一是大火,焚燒起來無法察覺;二是洪水,漂沒無常;三是官府,強行奪取沒有道理;四是惡子,花費沒有限度;五是盜賊,看見就搶奪。這五件事一旦發生,就無法抑制。譬如有人觸犯王法,被關在牢獄,應當被處死。財物被沒收充公,哪裡還能拿回來呢?又譬如阿難邠坻(Anāthapiṇḍika,給孤獨長者),財寶無數。國王奪取,主人無法阻止,也不是神龍所能阻止的。這是什麼原因呢?因為他前世佈施時有七種後悔,所以今世有七次富裕,也有七次貧窮。』長者聽了,更加歡喜踴躍。於是如來忽然回到了耆阇崛山(Gṛdhrakūṭa,靈鷲山)。』
當時,國內有尼揵(Nigaṇṭha,耆那教)異道人,名叫不蘭迦葉(Pūraṇa Kāśyapa,六師外道之一),聽說如來到長者家,歌頌了一首偈子,就得到了長者一千萬兩黃金,心中嫉妒,心想:『瞿曇(Gautama)沙
【English Translation】 English version Its rewards are fourfold: Great joy, unparalleled in the world. All the devas (gods), nāgas (dragons), are subdued by it. How joyful, O householder, that you have obtained such auspicious blessings. It is like sowing rice in the spring, which will ripen in the autumn. First you give, then you receive; the reward follows like a shadow.』
At that time, the householder, hearing the Buddha's virtuous voice, felt his five senses refreshed and joyful, and he came out. Seeing the Buddha reverent and solemn, he immediately said: 『The Śrāmaṇa (ascetic) Gautama (Buddha's family name) is truly wondrous! He knows that my family is blessed immeasurably. It is a condescension for such a venerable being to come and praise my home.』 Immediately, he offered the Tathāgata (Buddha) a fine white silk cloth worth ten million gold pieces. The Buddha accepted it and spoke words of appreciation (Dakṣiṇā).
The Buddha said to the householder: 『Wealth has five dangers. People in the world do not know this, and they are miserly and greedy, unable to reduce their spending to help the poor. When their lives end and their spirits depart, they leave their wealth behind in the world. If you can do as you have done, you will surely receive a reward. Wherever you are born, blessings will naturally return to you.』
The householder asked the Buddha: 『What are the five dangers?』
The Buddha replied: 『First, a great fire, which burns without warning; second, a great flood, which sweeps away everything impermanently; third, government officials, who seize property unjustly; fourth, wicked sons, whose spending is limitless; fifth, thieves, who rob whatever they see. Once these five things occur, they cannot be stopped. For example, if someone violates the law of the king and is imprisoned, they should be executed. Their property is confiscated by the government; how can they get it back? Furthermore, consider Anāthapiṇḍika (a wealthy merchant), who had countless treasures. The king seized them, and the owner could not stop him, nor could the nāgas (dragons) stop him. Why is this? Because in his past life, he had seven regrets after giving alms, so in this life, he has seven times been rich and seven times been poor.』 Hearing this, the householder became even more joyful. Then, the Tathāgata suddenly returned to Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak).』
At that time, there was a Nigaṇṭha (Jain) heretic in the country named Pūraṇa Kāśyapa (one of the six heretical teachers), who heard that the Tathāgata had gone to the householder's home, recited a verse, and received ten million gold pieces from the householder. He was filled with jealousy and thought: 『The Śrāmaṇa (ascetic) Gautama
門尚能得金,況我往乞,當不得乎?」
又自念言:「我當往求瞿曇沙門所可說偈,然後往乞,必得珍寶。嗟嘆之宜,當勝瞿曇。」
不蘭迦葉懷此愚癡、妒嫉之意而往稽首問訊如來,長跪白佛:「薄德無福,衣食不充。傳聞瞿曇詣長者家,歌頌一偈,大得珍寶。寧可哀矜,賜所說偈,令吾諷誦。當往咨嗟,冀望得寶。」
如來三達,知此長者卻後一時財寶當散。不蘭迦葉不知時宜,遭厄之家而說吉祥,必得長者無量杖痛。如來告言:「不惜此偈。所以者何?汝不知時。卿說此偈,必得楚痛。是故如來違卿所求。若更欲得應時之說、絕妙之句,吾當與汝。既使長者得聞真言,又可免於捶毒之痛。」
不蘭迦葉心自念言:「瞿曇沙門不欲令我往乞珍寶,是故吝惜,不肯與我。」即便重啟:「其于與我,焉知餘事?」
如來慈愍,諫之滿三,終不信解。佛亦豫知,不蘭迦葉前世因緣,應受此痛。如來又云:「罪不可債。」佛即為說吉祥之偈。尼干諷誦,一歲乃闇。
然後長者失火燒舍,珍奇了盡;五百馬駒同時燒死;所生妙子一旦終亡;王遣使者錄奪金印。后復乘船入海采寶,安隱來還,泊岸數日,五百寶船一旦漂沒。室族大小無不愁毒。譬如有人而被誅戮,未死之頃,愁怖難言。

【English Translation】 English version: 'The door was able to obtain gold, how much more so if I go begging, shouldn't I be able to obtain it?' He further thought to himself: 'I should go and ask Gotama (Gotama, an epithet of Shakyamuni Buddha, meaning 'ascetic') the Shramana (Shramana, meaning 'ascetic') for the verse he speaks, and then go begging, and I will surely obtain treasures. My eloquence in praise will surely surpass Gotama.' Purana Kassapa (Purana Kassapa, one of the Six Heretical Teachers) harboring this foolish and jealous intention, went to pay respects and inquire after the Tathagata (Tathagata, an epithet of the Buddha, meaning 'Thus Gone'), knelt and said to the Buddha: 'I am of little virtue and without blessings, my clothing and food are insufficient. Purana Kassapa did not understand the timing, speaking of auspiciousness in a family facing disaster, he would surely receive countless beatings from the elder. The Tathagata told him: 'I do not begrudge this verse. Why? Because you do not know the timing. If you recite this verse, you will surely suffer pain. Therefore, the Tathagata declines your request. If you wish to obtain timely words and exquisite phrases, I will give them to you. This way, the elder can hear the true words, and you can avoid the pain of being beaten.' Purana Kassapa thought to himself: 'Gotama the Shramana does not want me to go begging for treasures, therefore he is stingy and unwilling to give it to me.' He then requested again: 'Since he is willing to give it to me, how would he know about other matters?' The Tathagata, with compassion, advised him three times, but he still did not believe or understand. The Buddha also knew in advance that Purana Kassapa's past karma was such that he should suffer this pain. The Tathagata also said: 'Sin cannot be escaped.' The Buddha then spoke the auspicious verse for him. The Nigantha (Nigantha, Jain ascetics) recited this verse, and it took him a year to barely memorize it. Later, the elder's house caught fire, and the house was burned down, and all the treasures were burned to ashes; five hundred foals were burned to death at the same time; the wonderful son that was born suddenly died; the king sent messengers to confiscate his golden seal. Later, he boarded a ship to go to sea to collect treasures, returned safely, and after anchoring on the shore for a few days, five hundred treasure ships suddenly sank. All the members of the family were filled with sorrow and grief. It was like someone being executed, and before dying, the sorrow and fear were indescribable.
其日不蘭迦葉往到其門,歌頌如來吉祥之偈:
「長者今日, 吉祥集至, 一切福應, 室族吉利。 昔所殖福, 其報有四, 大小歡悅, 世間無比。 諸天龍神, 咸為降伏, 快哉長者, 猥獲吉福。 如春種禾, 秋則成熟, 先作后受, 影報隨逐。」
於是不蘭迦葉說此偈時,長者聞之,舉門忿恚:「天下兇殃無過於我。云何此人裸形無恥,在此妖蠱,說我吉祥,益我憂煩?」即出捶打,從頭至足,無不被患。舉身大痛,匍匐還家。
六師宗等逆問其意。答言:「此變正由瞿曇。」內不自克,反怨世尊。
爾時世尊在羅閱祇竹園之中,與諸大眾圍繞說法。佛告眾會:「不蘭迦葉前從如來求索一偈,欲詣長者,歌頌求寶。如來諫之,其于不信。今已在彼,遭痛毒患。」
阿難白佛:「不蘭迦葉與此長者有何因緣而被此患?」
佛告阿難:「乃昔久遠不可計數阿僧祇劫,時有國王,亦名音悅。復有一鳥,名曰鸚鵡,在王宮上,鳴聲和好。王時晝寢,聞鳥鳴聲,驚覺,問其左右:『此為何鳥,鳴聲妙好?』侍者白言:『有一奇鳥,五色焜煌,適在宮上,鳴已便去。』王即遣大眾,步騎絡繹,逐而求之。推尋殊久,捕得與王。王得

【English Translation】 English version That day, Purana Kashyapa (one of the six non-Buddhist teachers) went to the gate of the Gṛhapati (householder, a lay practitioner in ancient India), chanting auspicious verses of the Tathagata (the thus-gone, an epithet of the Buddha): 'O householder, today, auspiciousness gathers, all blessings respond, the family is fortunate. The merits planted in the past, their rewards are fourfold, great and small rejoice, unparalleled in the world. Gods, dragons, and spirits, all are subdued, happy is the householder, who has obtained auspicious blessings. Like sowing rice in spring, it ripens in autumn, first acting then receiving, the shadow of reward follows.' At that time, when Purana Kashyapa spoke this verse, the householder heard it and the whole household was filled with anger: 'There is no greater misfortune in the world than what has befallen me. Why is this naked ascetic here, uttering bewitching words, speaking of my auspiciousness, increasing my worries and troubles?' Immediately he went out and beat him, from head to toe, there was no place untouched. Purana Kashyapa was in great pain all over his body, and could only crawl back home. The followers of the six teachers (teachers of the six major schools of thought outside of Buddhism) asked him what had happened. He replied: 'This change is precisely due to Gautama (the family name of Shakyamuni Buddha).' He could not control himself inwardly, and instead resented the World-Honored One. At that time, the World-Honored One was in the Bamboo Grove (Veṇuvana) in Rajagriha (Rāmagṛha), surrounded by many disciples, expounding the Dharma. The Buddha told the assembly: 'Purana Kashyapa had previously asked the Tathagata for a verse, wanting to go to the householder, chanting to seek treasures. I advised him against it, but he did not believe. Now he is there, suffering painful calamities.' Ananda (one of the ten great disciples of Shakyamuni Buddha) asked the Buddha: 'What karmic connection does Purana Kashyapa have with this householder, that he should suffer such misfortune?' The Buddha told Ananda: 'In the distant past, countless asaṃkhya-kalpas (extremely long units of time) ago, there was a king, also named Yin Yue. There was also a bird, named Parrot, which sang beautifully on the royal palace. The king was taking a nap at noon, and when he heard the bird's song, he woke up, and asked the attendants around him: 'What is this bird, whose song is so beautiful?' The attendants replied: 'There is a strange bird, with five colors, which was just on the palace, and flew away after singing.' The king immediately sent a large number of people, infantry and cavalry in succession, to search for the bird. After searching for a long time, they finally caught it and presented it to the king. 歡喜,愛樂無厭,即以珠璣、水精、琉璃、真珠、珊瑚瓔珞其身,頭頸、羽翮無不周遍。常著左右,晝夜看視,不去須臾。

Later, a bird called a 'bald owl' came to the palace. Seeing the parrot receiving such favor, it asked the parrot, 'How did you achieve this?' The parrot replied, 'I came to the palace and my cries were exceptionally beautiful. The king loves and respects me for it, keeping me always by his side and adorning my body with five-colored jewels.' Upon hearing this, the bald owl became jealous and thought, 'I too shall cry, and I will cry even better than you. The king will surely favor me as well.' When the king was asleep, the bald owl began to cry. The king was immediately startled awake, his hair standing on end in fear. The king asked his attendants, 'What is this sound that startles and frightens me?' The attendants replied, 'It is a bird with an unpleasant voice, called a bald owl.' The king was furious and said, 'Quickly send people to search for it!' Soon, the bald owl was brought before the king. The Buddha said, 'A beautiful voice brings blessings, while an unpleasant voice brings misfortune. The consequences of one's actions are self-inflicted; it is wrong to blame the parrot.'
The Buddha told Ananda (Ananda): 'The former king is now the elder Yin Yue (Yin Yue, name of a person). The parrot is my past self. The bald owl is now Puranakashyapa (Puranakashyapa). He was jealous of the parrot in the past, and therefore suffered pain. Now he is jealous of the Tathagata (Tathagata), and the pain he suffers is even more unspeakable. Greed and jealousy burn oneself, let alone suffering.' Why is this? Because Puranakashyapa slandered the Tathagata in six matters, both before and after. What are the six matters? 【English Translation】 English version: One person in the Magadha realm, greedy for offerings, slandered the Tathagata (Tathagata); one person in the Vaisali (Vaisali) country, greedy for fame and profit, slandered the Tathagata; one person in the Sravasti (Sravasti) country, greedy for profit and stingy with reputation, slandered the Tathagata. At that time, the king drove them out of the country. The disciples of the six teachers, such as Purana Kassapa (Purana Kassapa), said with one heart: 'Gautama (Gautama) is indeed a god, and no one does not respect him. Our skills are shallow, our reputation has collapsed and declined, and we are despised everywhere. What is the use of living?' Immediately, they filled a bottle with sand and drowned themselves in the water, and then their lives ended, and they immediately fell into hell, where they were tortured and punished, and the pain was immeasurable.
The Buddha again warned: 'In the future world, there will be many greedy, jealous, and evil people who slander others, are arrogant and self-important, and argue with each other about their strengths and weaknesses. This is actually burning oneself, which is really painful. Ananda (Ananda)! Therefore, you should widely proclaim this sutra to protect such people in the future!'
Ananda asked the Buddha: 'What virtues did the elder Yinyue plant in the past to obtain these four blessings? And what sins did he commit to lose these blessings?'
The Buddha told Ananda: 'When Yinyue was young in his previous life, he admired and believed in the Buddha's teachings and the Sangha, made offerings wholeheartedly, and hoped to become wealthy. After marrying a wife, he was devoted to lust, violated and neglected the Three Jewels, and had no compassion or kindness towards elders and juniors. Therefore, when the retribution ended, the blessings also dissipated. You should enlighten and proclaim, so that they know the key points.'
After the Buddha finished speaking, the fourfold disciples, devas, nagas, ghosts, gods, kings, ministers, people, and all those present who heard this sutra were very happy, and no one did not bow in reverence.
