聞如是:

一時,佛游王舍城靈鷲山,與大比丘眾千人俱,聖通無礙悉皆應真,漏結已解生死已斷,穢冥已索慧明獨存;菩薩二萬,神通聖達統都三界,總攝諸法權慧無方,逮佛神德住無所住。

爾時,世尊游于王舍大城之中,廣演道義開化群生,天神、地神、海靈、鬼神、帝王、臣民、三界眾生皆來稽首,供養神化。

世無佛時,外道興隆,猶如冥夜炬燭為明;天下有佛群邪盡歇,譬如日出火無復光,國中本事外道邪見不蘭迦葉等六師,佛以正真之道訓誨天下。

是時,六師盡廢不見信奉,諸異道等心懷嫉妒,謀欲毀佛還望敬事。於是,六師召其門徒、合衆弟子會於一處,共集論議:「吾等道德高遠名著四海,眾儒共宗國主所奉,人民男女莫不信仰,於十六大國盡世供養。吾德如風民應如草,靡不稽首各等足下者;今佛出世現神道化,吾等便為人棄不見信奉,乃令我等飲食不甘臥起不安,出入行步恒懷愁憒,心中郁毒悉欲發狂,當作何計以毀辱之?逐使出國令人不見,爾乃還復吾供養耳。」共議此已,

【English Translation】 English version: Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was wandering in Rājagṛha (王舍城) on Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain (靈鷲山), accompanied by a great assembly of one thousand bhikkhus (比丘). They all possessed unobstructed supernormal powers, were all Arhats (阿羅漢), the bonds of defilements were already broken, the cycle of birth and death was already severed, the darkness of impurity was already cleared away, and only the light of wisdom remained. There were also twenty thousand Bodhisattvas (菩薩), with supernormal powers, holy and accomplished, governing the three realms (三界), encompassing all dharmas, with skillful wisdom without limit, having attained the divine virtues of the Buddha, abiding in the state of non-abiding. At that time, the World-Honored One (世尊) was wandering in the great city of Rājagṛha, extensively expounding the Dharma, enlightening and transforming sentient beings. Gods (天神), earth spirits, sea spirits, ghosts and spirits, emperors, ministers, and the people of the three realms all came to bow their heads and make offerings to the Buddha's divine transformations. When there was no Buddha in the world, the non-Buddhist paths (外道) flourished, like a torch providing light in the dark night. When a Buddha appears in the world, all heresies cease, like the sun rising and fire losing its light. In this country, the original heretical views of the non-Buddhists, such as Pūraṇa Kassapa (富蘭那·迦葉) and the other six heretical teachers (六師), were taught to the world by the Buddha with the true and correct path. At this time, the teachings of the six teachers were all abandoned, and no one believed in them. The various heretics harbored jealousy, plotting to destroy the Buddha, hoping to regain people's reverence. Therefore, the six teachers summoned their disciples, gathered all their followers in one place, and discussed together: 'Our morality is high, our reputation is far-reaching, many scholars commonly respect us, the king reveres us, and the men and women of the people all believe in us, offering to us for generations in the sixteen great countries. Our virtue is like the wind, and the people should be like grass, all bowing their heads, all equal to being at our feet. Now that the Buddha has appeared in the world, manifesting divine transformations, we are abandoned by people, and no one believes in us, so that our food is not sweet, our sleep is not peaceful, and our comings and goings are always filled with sorrow and confusion. The poison of resentment is accumulating in our hearts, and we are about to go mad. What should we do to humiliate him? Drive him out of the country, so that people cannot see him, and then we can restore our original offerings.' They finished their discussion.


各相謂言:「羅閱大城之中有勢強長者,國相大臣名為申日,信奉吾等執心不二,恒毀佛道以為虛偽,惟有此人勢力威強,能助我等毀辱除去。」

於是六師即從坐起,將五百弟子到王舍大城詣申日家。申日見諸師來,即下正殿迎為作禮,施好榻機飯食畢盥,拱手對坐。諸師告曰:「吾等故與大眾來造長者,欲議一事愿垂聽省。」

申日白言:「惟蒙訓誨,愿樂欲聞。」

六師俱曰:「吾等此國之師,功名勛著群儒稽首,國主致敬大臣所奉,於十六大國獨言只步。長者所知,佛出於世自稱聖智,幻術欺巧倒正反說,欲與吾等列聖並智,齊威等神幻惑人民。國人愚冥信奉其道,疑惑天下沮敗善心,更謂吾等無有道德不見信奉。長者豪強,帝王所欽國民伏信,威振四海天下望風,深惟師徒終始義重,記功列勛傳之來世,愿為吾等毀辱除之,令滅不見,復吾供養,豈不快哉!」

長者啟白:「敬承來告,憶昔往日,我之愚兄奉佛之故毀辱諸師,從此以來實懷忿恚,每欲規圖執事靡由。今被聖教合我本心,當展力效命盡節于師。」

諸梵志曰:「吾向共議,欲令長者當於門中,鑿作五丈六尺深坑,以炭火適半細鐵為椽土薄覆上,設眾飲食以毒著中,若火坑不焚毒飯足害,便往請佛。佛常自云有

【English Translation】 English version They said to each other: 'In the great city of Rajagrha (羅閱大城), there is a powerful elder, a state minister named Shenri (申日), who believes in us wholeheartedly and constantly denigrates the Buddha's teachings as false. Only this person has the power and influence to help us slander and eliminate them.' Thereupon, the Six Heretical Teachers (六師) immediately rose from their seats, and with five hundred disciples, went to the great city of Rajagrha to visit Shenri's home. When Shenri saw the teachers arrive, he immediately descended from his main hall to greet them, paid his respects, provided good seats and food, and after washing, sat facing them with folded hands. The teachers said: 'We have come with the assembly to visit you, Elder, to discuss a matter and hope you will listen.' Shenri replied: 'I am honored to receive your instructions and am happy to listen.' The Six Teachers said together: 'We are the teachers of this country, our merits and fame are well-known, scholars bow to us, the king respects us, and ministers revere us. We stand alone in the sixteen great kingdoms. The foolish people of the country believe in his way, confusing the world, destroying good intentions, and saying that we have no virtue and do not trust us. Elder, you are powerful and strong, admired by emperors, trusted by the people, your prestige shakes the four seas, and the world looks up to you. We deeply consider the importance of the relationship between teacher and disciple, and we will record your merits and pass them on to future generations. We hope that you will slander and eliminate the Buddha's teachings for us, so that they disappear and we can restore our offerings. Wouldn't that be a joyful thing!' The elder Shenri reported: 'I respectfully acknowledge your message. Recalling the past, my foolish brother slandered you teachers because he believed in the Buddha's teachings. Since then, I have harbored resentment and have always wanted to find an opportunity to help you, but I had no chance. Today, receiving your teachings is exactly what I wanted. I will do my best to serve you teachers.' The Brahmins (諸梵志) said: 'We discussed earlier that we want the Elder to dig a pit five and a half 'zhang' (丈) deep in front of the gate, burn charcoal halfway, use thin iron as rafters, cover it with thin soil, set up various foods, and poison the food. 三達之智,神通無礙,照見未然,明禍福之原、吉兇所趣,實無此分,而但誑惑萬姓,審有此智當不受請,若無此智必自受之,今欲以此規圖于佛。」

申日聞之,欣然大悅贊言:「善哉!誠如大師之所教敕,此謀深密高妙實為奇異,以此圖之何憂不獲。輒如聖教,作火坑毒飯,嚴以待之。」

爾時,不蘭迦葉五百弟子,見申日計共謀同,歡喜踴躍不能自勝,咸共起住,同聲舉手稱讚申日:「善哉!真是聖明第一弟子。」

申日重啟:「今自憂之,必自嚴辦,比令明日諸師當見。」長者禮已,諸師各還。

於是,申日敕外嚴駕導從前後,便詣佛所,下車卻蓋,解劍脫履,拱手直進,稽首足畢,長跪白佛:「唯然,世尊!飢渴神化樂仰清風,世事多緣奉敬靡由,今故請現稽首稟化。」

佛告賢者:「明日至心向于如來。」

申日啟言:「明日欲設微飯,惟愿世尊與諸聖眾降德屈神。」是時,世尊愍其狂愚,欲濟脫之,默然受請。申日內喜,心自念言:「果如規計。」禮畢辭退。過六師所,諸師迎問:「為受請不?」申日啟白:「承諸師威力,已受我請,果如所圖。」諸師及五百弟子皆大歡喜不能自勝,諸梵志等普喜並言:「長者速還,作火坑、毒飯,嚴以待之。」

於是,申日命令外面準備車駕,前後都有隨從引導,便前往佛陀所在的地方。下車后收起車蓋,解下佩劍脫掉鞋子,拱手徑直走上前,頂禮佛足完畢,長跪稟告佛陀:「是的,世尊!我如同飢渴的人渴望得到神化般的甘露,樂於仰慕清風。世事繁多,一直沒有機會奉敬,今天特來拜見,稽首稟受教化。」

佛陀告訴賢者申日:「明天以至誠之心面向如來。」

申日稟告說:「明天想準備一些簡單的飯食,希望世尊與各位聖眾降臨,屈尊光臨。」這時,世尊憐憫他的狂妄愚癡,想要救度他脫離苦海,默然接受了他的邀請。申日內心歡喜,心裡暗自念道:「果然如我所計劃的那樣。」行禮完畢后告辭離開。經過六師(指六位外道大師)所在的地方,各位大師迎上來問道:「佛陀接受邀請了嗎?」申日稟告說:「承蒙各位大師的威力,佛陀已經接受了我的邀請,果然如我們所計劃的那樣。」各位大師和五百個弟子都非常歡喜,不能自已,各位梵志(Brahmin)等都普遍感到高興,並說:「長者快回去,準備火坑、毒飯,嚴陣以待。」

【English Translation】 English version: 『The Threefold Wisdom』 (knowledge of the past, present, and future), with unobstructed supernatural powers, can foresee the future, understand the origins of misfortune and fortune, and the direction of good and bad omens. In reality, they do not possess such abilities, but merely use them to deceive and bewilder the people. If they truly had such wisdom, they would not accept invitations; if they did not have such wisdom, they would surely come on their own. Now, let us use this scheme to plot against the Buddha.』

Shen Ri, upon hearing these words, was overjoyed and exclaimed, 『Excellent! Indeed, as the masters have taught, this plan is profound and meticulous, brilliant and ingenious, truly extraordinary. Using this scheme against him, what worries do we have of not succeeding? Let us follow the sacred teachings and prepare the fire pit and poisoned rice, and await him with utmost readiness.』

At that time, the five hundred disciples of Purana Kassapa (one of the six non-Buddhist teachers), seeing Shen Ri's plan, conspired together, rejoicing and leaping with uncontrollable joy. They all stood up together, raised their hands in unison, and praised Shen Ri, 『Excellent! Truly, you are the most enlightened disciple.』

Shen Ri reported again, 『Now, I myself am concerned about this matter and will personally handle it with utmost care, so that the masters may see it tomorrow.』 After the elder had paid his respects, the masters each returned.

Thereupon, Shen Ri ordered the preparation of carriages outside, with attendants leading the way in front and behind, and proceeded to the place where the Buddha was. After getting out of the carriage and putting away the canopy, he unbuckled his sword, took off his shoes, clasped his hands, and walked straight forward. After prostrating himself at the Buddha's feet, he knelt down and reported to the Buddha, 『Yes, World Honored One! I am like a hungry and thirsty person longing for divine nectar, delighting in admiring the pure breeze. Worldly affairs are numerous, and I have not had the opportunity to pay my respects. Today, I have come to pay my respects and receive your teachings.』

The Buddha told the worthy Shen Ri, 『Tomorrow, with a sincere heart, face the Tathagata (another name for the Buddha).』

Shen Ri reported, 『Tomorrow, I would like to prepare a simple meal, and I hope that the World Honored One and all the holy assembly will descend and condescend to grace us with your presence.』 At this time, the World Honored One, pitying his arrogance and ignorance, and desiring to save him from suffering, silently accepted his invitation. Shen Ri was inwardly delighted and thought to himself, 『Indeed, it is as I planned.』 After paying his respects, he took his leave. Passing by the place where the six teachers (referring to the six non-Buddhist teachers) were, the masters came forward to ask, 『Did the Buddha accept the invitation?』 Shen Ri reported, 『Thanks to the power of the masters, the Buddha has accepted my invitation, indeed as we planned.』 The masters and the five hundred disciples were all overjoyed and could not contain themselves. All the Brahmins (members of the priestly class) were universally pleased and said, 『Elder, return quickly and prepare the fire pit and poisoned rice, and await him with utmost readiness.』

The elder returned.


家,敕外密令,中門外掘作火坑、毒飯嚴以待之。

長者有子,名曰月光,厥年十六,天姿挺特儀容端正,博通群籍貫綜神摸,天文、地理靡不照焉,高名動世群儒師仰,慈悲愍世生死之苦,降德普入欲度眾生,諫父申日:「佛為大聖三界之尊,道德清凈言教真正,三達之聖慈悲喜護,心過慈母當蒙得度,更興逆惡悕望天福,豈不惑哉?

「昔者,世尊求道之日,坐于道場元吉樹下,第六天魔見佛高遠三毒已滅,穢冥以索慧明獨存,神聖無上諸天所宗,上帝親下萬神侍衛,內懷嫉妒心中煩毒,念其道成當必勝我,飲食不甘伎樂不御,即升正殿召博聞臣,議設方計毀敗其道。群臣啟曰:『菩薩神聖道力無上,威震三界德伏十方,非是臣等所可謀向。』

「於時魔王赫威奮發震曜天地,召諸鬼兵興軍聚眾,帶甲億萬旌旗曀日光曜蔽天,宣敕士眾皆使變化,奇形異類數百千種,蟲頭人軀鬼魅可畏,擔山負石口眼吐火,圍繞菩薩齊聲踏地,牛吼唱噭震動八荒,山崩地裂樹木摧折,海水波盪踴沸六原,溢流浩汗高波滔天。百姓驚怖巢木棲山,潛龍妄踴,鷙鳥驚翔,師子懾竄,金翅鳥王魔竭大魚順流低仰,群神怖悸逃走遁藏,千變萬化群兇相將,毒惡逆類瀰漫縱橫,一時集惡向於世尊。

「佛直以放慈心

『當時,魔王(Mara)威風凜凜,震動天地,召集各種鬼兵,興兵聚眾,億萬鬼兵身披鎧甲,旌旗遮天蔽日。魔王下令士眾變化成各種奇形怪狀的怪物,成百上千種,有蟲頭人身,有各種可怕的鬼魅,有的擔山,有的負石,有的口眼噴火,圍繞著菩薩,齊聲踏地,發出牛吼般的叫聲,震動八方,山崩地裂,樹木摧折,海水波濤洶涌,沸騰翻滾,溢出氾濫,波濤滔天。百姓驚恐萬分,躲到樹上或山裡,潛藏的龍妄自跳躍,兇猛的鳥驚慌飛翔,獅子也害怕地逃竄,金翅鳥王(Garuda)和魔竭大魚(Makara)也順著水流低頭。眾神驚慌恐懼,逃走躲藏,千變萬化的兇惡之徒聚集在一起,毒惡逆行的傢伙瀰漫縱橫,一時之間,各種邪惡都朝著世尊而來。』

【English Translation】 English version: At home, the father secretly ordered that a fire pit be dug outside the middle gate, and poisoned food be prepared, to await him with strict vigilance.

The elder had a son named Yueguang (Moonlight Bodhisattva), who was sixteen years old. He was naturally intelligent, with a dignified appearance, well-versed in various scriptures, and proficient in mystical knowledge. He was knowledgeable in astronomy and geography, and his reputation spread far and wide, revered as a teacher by many scholars. Compassionate and pitying the suffering of birth and death in the world, he resolved to universally liberate all beings. He advised his father, saying: 'The Buddha (Lokajyestha) is a great sage, the most honored in the Three Realms (Trailokya). His morality is pure, his teachings are true, he is a saint who has attained the Threefold Knowledge (Trividya), compassionate, loving, joyful, and protective, like a loving mother. We should receive his teachings and be liberated. If we act against him and do evil, yet hope to receive heavenly blessings, wouldn't that be foolish?'

'In the past, when the World Honored One (Lokajyestha) was seeking enlightenment, he sat under the Bodhi tree (Bodhi tree). The Sixth Heaven Demon (Paranirmitavasavartin) saw that the Buddha's state was lofty and far-reaching, and the Three Poisons (Three poisons) had been extinguished, leaving only pure wisdom and light. He was sacred, supreme, and revered by all the heavens, even the God (Deva) personally descended, with myriad deities attending. The demon king was inwardly jealous and troubled, thinking that once the Buddha attained enlightenment, he would surely defeat him. Therefore, he lost his appetite for food and music, and immediately ascended the main hall, summoning learned ministers to discuss how to destroy the Buddha's practice. The ministers reported: 'The Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva) is sacred and unparalleled, with supreme spiritual power, awe-inspiring in the Three Realms, and virtuous in all directions. We ministers are not capable of devising a plan against him.'

'At that time, the Demon King (Mara) was majestic and awe-inspiring, shaking heaven and earth. He summoned various demon soldiers, raised an army, and gathered a multitude. Billions of demon soldiers wore armor, and banners covered the sky and obscured the sunlight. The people were terrified, hiding in trees or mountains. Hidden dragons leaped wildly, fierce birds flew in panic, lions fled in fear, the Garuda (Garuda) and the Makara (Makara) lowered their heads along the water. The deities were frightened and terrified, fleeing and hiding. Thousands of transformed evil beings gathered together, and poisonous and rebellious creatures spread rampant. In an instant, all kinds of evil turned towards the World Honored One.'

「天龍、鬼神、世間、人民、梵釋、魔王莫不稽顙受佛化者。如來之身金剛德體,眾惡盡滅萬善積著,相好光明神器無喻,永除五道之大冥,獲無上正真之獨明,處眾聖之上猶星中之月,如日初出照于朝陽,廣陳道化導世兇愚,懷慈四等愍傷眾生,施恩濟苦心過慈母。佛之道德神化如此,愿父改悔歸命三尊。」

爾時,長者申日罪蓋所蔽心不開解,告子月光:「假使如來之德如子所嘆,佛有神通照見未然者,當豫知我作火坑、毒飯,今何以故受吾之請?以此推之知無遠慮。」

月光復言:「佛實有三達之智、六通之明、大慈四等靡不貫綜,常度愚闇不逆人意。」

申日心迷執愚不捨,明旦遣人請佛,使者受教詣世尊所,長跪白佛言:「長者申日啟言:『日時已至飯食以具,惟愿舉眾降德自屈。』」

The Buddha, with his divine power, transformed the fire pit into a seven-jeweled purple-blue bathing pool, with water of eight qualities, golden sand at the bottom, and lotuses on the edge, fish, turtles, soft-shelled turtles, and alligators in the pool.

The sins I have committed are boundless.' He turned to the six heretical teachers and said: 'It is all you beasts who have caused me to sink into the boiling hellfire, what should I do now?' The six heretical teachers felt fear and shame, speechless, afraid of being severely punished, and each fled in panic. Then, Sendatsu, together with his son Moonlight, his wife, concubines, male and female relatives, and heretical companions, came out to welcome the Buddha. From afar, they saw the World Honored One's fiery radiance shining like a jeweled mountain, his natural form was golden-purple, his immense body was sixteen feet tall, his divine countenance was serene, his faculties were tranquil, possessing the thirty-two marks and eighty minor characteristics, the Heaven of Heavens, with sublime morality, the World Honored One with the ten powers, the king among gods and humans. Sendatsu understood the Dharma, like a lost person finding the right direction, his madness was cured, and five emotions welled up from within, sorrow and joy intertwined. He immediately stepped forward to confess his sins, prostrated himself with his five limbs touching the ground, and bowed in reverence: 'Yes, World Honored One! Please forgive my blindness and ignorance, for not recognizing the true Dharma and believing in false teachings.'

申日下食,香徹八難,餓鬼得安。食已行水,眾會寂然。申日退坐,垂泣啟言:「唯然,世尊!恕我迷惑,敢圖逆惡向于如來,自揆罪重應入地獄,湯火痛考長夜受苦,將脫何由?佛為大慈三界之救,愍念眾生濟其塗炭,昨不誡我令我罪成,得無世尊不豫知也。」

佛告申日:「昔定光世尊授我莂時:『汝卻後無數阿僧祇劫,當於五濁惡世作佛,廣度眾生如我今日,當有長者申日,火坑、毒飯,規圖害汝。』我乃爾時得明慧三昧,時已豫知汝姓字,況于昨日而當不知。」

申日歡喜言:「世尊乃豫知無數劫事,我既覺悟會得免罪,今我盡心自歸於佛,所為之非愿,令重罪而得微輕。」

He replied, 'Yes, Lord of the World (an epithet for the Buddha)! I am willing to listen, and I will practice the good path throughout my life, wholeheartedly and unforgettably.'

At that time, the World-Honored One cleared his throat, emitted a resounding voice, and used eight kinds of sounds to proclaim myriad billions of sounds, extensively expounding immeasurable Dharma words: the eight liberations, the Four Noble Truths, the three doors to liberation, the six perfections, exploring the essence of the path and the subtle practice, explaining that the three realms are empty, that all dharmas arise from causes and conditions, that actions create either sin or merit, observing the illness and selecting the medicine, teaching the Dharma according to their capacity.

Shen Ri (a name) immediately understood, his mind became open, his knots of the heart were untied, his doubts were eliminated, he suddenly became free from thoughts, and entered into peaceful samadhi. Immediately on his seat, he attained the stage of non-retrogression, joyfully leaping up into the air, one hundred and forty zhang (a unit of measurement) above the ground. Coming down from the air, he prostrated on the ground, kissed the Buddha's feet, rubbed the Buddha's feet, knelt down and declared, 'Now I have awakened, and I have obtained liberation from the Buddha. I joyfully praise the Buddha. The ten powers (the ten powers of a Tathagata) of the Buddha are truly magnificent! The divine power of the Tathagata shakes the ten directions, and no one dares to resist. The fiery pit and poisoned food vanish on their own in advance. The Buddha is truly without worry! All swords cannot harm him, and swift arrows and sharp blades all transform into flowers. The Buddha is truly courageous! The Tathagata is able to subdue the ninety-six kinds of heretical paths, and they all praise the Great Path with one voice. The Buddha is truly like a diamond! The Buddha is like a golden mountain, illuminating everything. Darkness and decay are illuminated by the fire of wisdom alone, surpassing all sages, with merit exceeding the void. His eloquence is inexhaustible, opening and expounding the Dharma words to the great thousand world system, taming all the stubborn people, causing them to mature, his majesty shakes the three realms, alone and without peer, free from all defilements, pure like heavenly gold, raining down all kinds of Dharma treasures, filling everything, bestowing inexhaustible seven great treasures, observing the mind and selecting the medicine, first destroying the demon soldiers, opening the Dharma according to their capacity, and none are unable to obtain liberation, and the ninety-six kinds of heretical paths all hide away.'

When Shen Ri praised the Dharma, countless listeners came to the assembly, all delighted to hear the Dharma, and the number of people who obtained blessings and liberation was incalculable. Heaven and earth shook, musical instruments made sounds, the Seventh Brahma King proclaimed the Dharma words he had heard, and thousands of kinds of musical instruments such as the pipa, chimes, and drums sounded naturally. The Emperor of Trayastrimsa scattered flowers on the Buddha, praising the Buddha's holy virtue, which was unprecedented.

At this time, there was no one who was not joyful, prostrating and paying homage.

佛說:『善哉善哉,月光童子,你可以隨意發問,如來會為你詳細解說,讓你心生歡喜。』

月光童子說:『世尊,眾生在世,壽命長短不一,相貌美醜不同,貧富貴賤各異,智慧高下有別,這是什麼原因呢?』

佛說:『善哉善哉,月光童子,你所問的問題意義深遠,能利益無量眾生。現在你要仔細聽好,我為你一一解說。眾生之所以壽命長短不一,是因為他們過去世所造的業不同。有的人喜歡殺生,所以今生短命;有的人慈悲為懷,不殺生,所以今生長壽。』

『眾生相貌美醜不同,是因為他們過去世所造的業不同。有的人喜歡嗔恚,所以今生醜陋;有的人心懷慈悲,常修忍辱,所以今生相貌端正。』

『眾生貧富貴賤各異,是因為他們過去世所造的業不同。有的人慳吝不捨,所以今生貧窮;有的人樂善好施,所以今生富貴。』

『眾生智慧高下有別,是因為他們過去世所造的業不同。有的人不喜學習,愚昧無知,所以今生愚癡;有的人勤奮好學,尊重智者,所以今生聰慧。』

『月光童子,一切眾生,所受的果報,都是自己過去所造的業力所致。所以,我們應當斷惡修善,才能獲得好的果報。』

月光童子聽了佛的開示,心生歡喜,信受奉行。

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of Moonlight Child Spoken by the Buddha

Thus I have heard. At one time, the Buddha was in Śrāvastī, at the Jetavana-anāthapindada-ārāma.

At that time, Candra-prabha kumāra (Moonlight Child) came to the Buddha, bowed at the Buddha's feet, and sat to one side, saying to the Buddha, 'World Honored One, I would like to ask the Tathagata some questions, and I hope that the World Honored One will be compassionate and allow me to do so.'

The Buddha said, 'Excellent, excellent, Moonlight Child. You may ask whatever you wish. The Tathagata will explain it to you in detail, so that you may be filled with joy.'

Moonlight Child said, 'World Honored One, why is it that beings in the world have different lifespans, different appearances, different levels of wealth and status, and different levels of wisdom?'

The Buddha said, 'Excellent, excellent, Moonlight Child. The questions you ask are profound and can benefit countless beings. Now, listen carefully, and I will explain them to you one by one. The reason why beings have different lifespans is because of the different karmas they created in their past lives. Some people like to kill, so they have short lives in this life; some people are compassionate and do not kill, so they have long lives in this life.'

'The reason why beings have different appearances is because of the different karmas they created in their past lives. Some people like to be angry, so they are ugly in this life; some people are compassionate and often practice patience, so they have beautiful appearances in this life.'

'The reason why beings have different levels of wealth and status is because of the different karmas they created in their past lives. Some people are stingy and unwilling to give, so they are poor in this life; some people are happy to give and do good deeds, so they are rich and noble in this life.'

'The reason why beings have different levels of wisdom is because of the different karmas they created in their past lives. Some people do not like to learn and are ignorant, so they are foolish in this life; some people are diligent in learning and respect the wise, so they are intelligent in this life.'
