聞如是:

一時,佛游王舍城靈鳥頂山,與大比丘千二百五十人。

爾時,王舍城中有大豪富長者,名旃羅日,財寶無量,敬信佛法、供養眾僧,精進難及。長者有弟號名申日,不信佛法奉諸邪術,見兄奉正每懷恚嫉,所可侍師號不蘭迦葉。不蘭迦葉五百人等,謂申日言:「今汝兄者獨不侍我,不知真道而反信佛。」

時,旃羅日知異道人所共論說,語申日言:「吾明日欲請卿師,寧肯自屈詣吾舍不?」

申日答言:「當往報之。」

申日即往詣其師所,長跪白言:「我兄今欲降伏請諸大人,明日自屈詣其舍食。」

師言:「大善!即受其請。」

時申日還白其兄言:「今已受請,明日當來。」

時旃羅日多使人客,于門中地掘作大坑令深五尺,以青污泥滿其坑中,薄覆其上令如平地;又復豫作五百發腳床,皆施一腳以襜衣之,以五百缽成熟乳酪,以此供具待異道人。

明日時至,來詣請所,諸尼犍子無有法則,亂行並肩先入無上,適至

一時,佛陀在王舍城(Rājagṛha)的靈鷲山(Gṛdhrakūṭa)上,與一千二百五十位大比丘在一起。

當時,王舍城中有一位非常富有的大長者,名叫旃羅日(Candraruci),擁有無量的財寶,敬信佛法、供養眾僧,精進的程度難以企及。這位長者有個弟弟,名叫申日(Śūryaruci),不相信佛法而信奉各種邪術,看到哥哥信奉正法,常常心懷怨恨嫉妒。申日所侍奉的老師名叫不蘭迦葉(Pūraṇa Kāśyapa)。不蘭迦葉和他的五百名弟子對申日說:『現在你哥哥不侍奉我們,不瞭解真正的道理反而信奉佛陀。』

【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks of the Śūryaruci Sūtra

(Recorded in the Kaiyuan Catalogue as untraceable to Dharmarakṣa, possibly Zhi Qian mistakenly attributed it to Dharmarakṣa)

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was dwelling on Vulture Peak (Gṛdhrakūṭa) in Rājagṛha, together with twelve hundred and fifty great Bhikṣus.

At that time, in the city of Rājagṛha, there was a very wealthy elder named Candraruci, who possessed immeasurable treasures, deeply revered the Buddha's teachings, made offerings to the Sangha, and was unmatched in his diligence. This elder had a younger brother named Śūryaruci, who did not believe in the Buddha's teachings but instead adhered to various heretical practices. Seeing his brother devoted to the true Dharma, he often harbored resentment and jealousy. The teacher whom Śūryaruci served was named Pūraṇa Kāśyapa. Pūraṇa Kāśyapa and his five hundred disciples said to Śūryaruci: 'Now your brother does not serve us, does not understand the true path, and instead believes in the Buddha.'

At that time, Candraruci, knowing what these non-Buddhist practitioners were discussing, said to Śūryaruci: 'I would like to invite your teacher tomorrow. Would you be willing to have them come to my house?'

Śūryaruci replied: 'I will go and inform them.'

Śūryaruci immediately went to his teacher and, kneeling, reported: 'My brother now wishes to subdue all of you great ones and invites you to his house for a meal tomorrow.'

The teacher said: 'Very good! I accept his invitation.'

Then Śūryaruci returned and told his brother: 'Now the invitation has been accepted, and they will come tomorrow.'

At that time, Candraruci had many servants dig a large pit five feet deep in the ground at the entrance, filled the pit with blue mud, and thinly covered it to make it look like level ground. He also prepared five hundred single-legged stools, covered them with cloth, and prepared five hundred bowls of cooked milk curds, using these offerings to await the non-Buddhist practitioners.

The next day, when the time arrived, they came to the place of invitation. Those Nirgranthas had no rules, walked in a disorderly manner shoulder to shoulder, and rushed to enter.


門中皆各使走,卻墮泥坑污其衣服,皆悉瞋恚各欲還去。

時旃羅日使人牽留,解語其意:「此舊泥坑,道人不知而墮此坑,不故為之,幸莫瞋恚,愿前飯食。」貿易衣服,盡請令入。在門裡徑先付酪器,皆手持已,便語令坐,適卻居床,床皆反側,五百道人皆僵仆地,缽酪漿者,激灌其面及其衣服。時諸道人益懷瞋恚,語申日言:「汝今投我與兄共謀,毀辱吾等,甚為不細。」

是時,申日亦大不樂,道人瞋恚皆棄捨去。時旃羅日復牽留之,為說方便譬喻之言:「屬卿曹等墮泥中時,身體正黑甚為醜惡,如卿之道;今酪正白其色鮮潔,譬如佛道,亦可舍卿所奉之術來就吾法。」諸異道人不復與語,懷恚而去。

明日申日往詣師所,長跪自陳:「我兄無狀所為非法,我實不知,愿師加哀不見咎責。雖爾,今者當爲大師報昨日之怨。我兄但以泥坑酪漿,毀辱師等耳,我今所報當過於此。今我兄所侍之師,我當請之,掘門裡地令入五丈,以火著中薄覆其上,設眾飯食皆內毒藥。時佛當來,若不墮火坑中者,當持毒飯而分佈,與以此殺之,于師何如?」

時師報言:「如佛世尊,多智聖猛睹去來事,他人所議輒豫知之,卿雖欲爾恐不能諧。」

申日復言:「先當請之,若其受者為無所知,若

At that time, Candraravi (Son of the Moon) sent people to hold them back, explaining the reason: 'This is an old mud pit. The ascetics did not know and fell into this pit. It was not done on purpose. Please do not be angry and please have a meal first.' (Candraravi) exchanged their clothes and invited them all in. Inside the gate, he directly handed them bowls of yogurt. (The heretics) all held them in their hands, and then he gestured for them to sit down. Just as they were about to sit on the beds, the beds all overturned, and five hundred ascetics fell stiffly to the ground. The yogurt from the bowls splashed on their faces and clothes. At this time, the ascetics became even more angry and said to Sūryaravi (Son of the Sun): 'You are now conspiring with your brother to insult us. This is too much.' At this time, Sūryaravi (Son of the Sun) was also very unhappy. The ascetics angrily left. At this time, Candraravi (Son of the Moon) again held them back, using convenient metaphors to persuade them: 'When you fell into the mud pit just now, your bodies were pitch black and very ugly, like your path; now the yogurt is pure white and its color is bright and clean, like the Buddha's path. You can also abandon the magic you believe in and come to our Dharma.' The various heretics no longer spoke to him and left in anger. The next day, Sūryaravi (Son of the Sun) went to his teacher, knelt down and stated: 'My brother's behavior is improper, and what he has done is not in accordance with the law. I really did not know. I hope that you, teacher, can forgive me and not blame me. Even so, now I should avenge yesterday's grievances for you, Master. My brother only used mud pits and yogurt to insult you. What I will now avenge will exceed these. Now the teacher whom my brother serves, I should invite him, dig a pit five fathoms deep inside the gate, light a fire in the pit, cover it thinly on top, and set up a lavish meal, putting poison in all of it. When the Buddha (Buddha, the World-Honored One) comes, if he does not fall into the fire pit, then take the poisoned rice and distribute it to him, using this to kill him. What do you think, Master?' At this time, the teacher replied: 'Like the Buddha, the World-Honored One (Buddha, the World-Honored One), who has great wisdom, is holy and mighty, and can foresee past and future events, he can know in advance what others are planning. Even if you want to do this, I am afraid you will not succeed.' Sūryaravi (Son of the Sun) said again: 'First invite him. If he accepts the invitation, it means he has no knowledge. If


必明聖不受吾請。」

師曰:「大善!」

是時,申日出王舍城詣靈鳥山,前到佛所,叉手揖讓,而白佛言:「我欲請佛及諸弟子,愿屈光儀到舍小飯。」

佛言:「大善!」

於是申日歡喜而退,還白其師:「佛已受請為無所知,但當掘坑具毒飯耳。」

時諸異道人皆大踴躍,展轉相謂以為大慶。

申日有子,名旃羅法(漢言月光童子),先世宿命學佛經道,有神猛志,志在大乘,白其父言:「佛者大聖神通已達,前知無窮卻睹無極,蜎蜚蠕動心義所念,皆豫知之。莫用邪冥惡人之言,受其重罪。」

時,旃羅法復白父言:「假令劫盡滿其中火,三千剎土皆悉周遍,又取諸毒揣若須彌,猶尚不能動佛一毛,況此小坑而欲害之。今父所作譬如螢火,自以小明欲蔽日月,譬如小鳥欲以其身沖崩鐵圍,反碎其身無所能諧。今諸異道所作如是,不須請佛。」

其父不信故如前謀,明日時至遣人白佛:「所供已辦,愿可自屈。」

於是如來便起向道,放大光明一切洞徹。是時,十方有十菩薩皆阿惟顏,一一菩薩各與億百那術無數菩薩俱飛來會,各將寶華栴檀名香,以眾伎樂供養世尊,詣王舍城,欲觀如來有所感動。

時申日舍,有金色光皆明如日,旃羅法白言

The Buddha said, 'Very good!' Then Shenri happily withdrew and went back to tell his teacher, 'The Buddha has accepted the invitation, he is truly ignorant. We only need to dig the pit and prepare the poisoned food.' At that time, the other heretics were all very happy, telling each other that this was a great celebration. Shenri had a son named Candana (Candana, translated as Moonlight Boy), who had studied Buddhist scriptures in his previous life, had a brave aspiration, and aspired to Mahayana Buddhism. He told his father, 'The Buddha is a great sage, and his supernatural powers have reached an extremely high level. He can foresee the future and see through the past. Even the thoughts of tiny insects, the Buddha can know in advance. Do not listen to the words of those evil people, otherwise you will receive severe punishment.' At that time, Candana again said to his father, 'Even if the fire at the end of the kalpa (kalpa, an aeon in Buddhist cosmology) burns out and fills the entire three thousand great thousand worlds, and all kinds of poisons are piled up like Mount Sumeru (Sumeru, the sacred mountain in Buddhist cosmology), it cannot shake a single hair of the Buddha, let alone this small pit, how can it harm the Buddha? What you are doing now is like a firefly, thinking that it has a little light and wants to cover the sun and the moon; it is like a small bird, wanting to hit Mount Cakravāla (Cakravāla, the mountain in Buddhist cosmology) with its body, but it will only be crushed to pieces and will not be able to do anything. What these heretics are doing now is like this, there is really no need to invite the Buddha.' His father did not believe him and still acted according to the original plan. The next day, when the time came, he sent someone to tell the Buddha, 'The meal has been prepared, I hope you can condescend to come.' Then the Tathagata (Tathagata, 'Thus Gone One', an epithet of the Buddha) got up and walked towards the destination, emitting great light, illuminating everything. At that time, there were ten Bodhisattvas (Bodhisattva, an enlightened being) from the ten directions, all Avaivartika-bodhisattvas (Avaivartika-bodhisattva, non-regressing Bodhisattva), each Bodhisattva came to the meeting with hundreds of millions of Niyutas (Niyuta, a large number unit) of countless Bodhisattvas, each carrying precious flowers, sandalwood (Sandalwood, a kind of fragrant wood) and other precious incense, using various musical instruments to make offerings to the World Honored One, and went to Wangshe City, wanting to see if the Tathagata would be affected in any way. At that time, Shenri's residence had golden light, as bright as the sun, Candana said:


:「今佛現舍金色之光,佛以向道有此感應,可往止之,不須使前。」父故不信。

是時,申日第一夫人號名月羽,旃羅法母也,見此變瑞踴躍歡喜,即發無上正真道意。

於是,旃羅法白其母言:「今當敕五百夫人,皆令莊嚴出見如來。所以者何?世尊難值,億百千劫時有佛耳。」五百夫人皆悉受教,歡喜侍佛。

佛入城時,足蹈門閫,三千國土皆大震動,諸有疾病悉為除愈,盲視聾聽喑痾能言,跛躄者行,諸被毒者毒皆不行。諸有樂器不鼓自鳴,金銀、七寶皆作音聲,飛鳥、走獸相和悲鳴。時十方神並諸天人,各與尊神不可計數,皆悉隨從詣申日舍。

佛蹈火坑變為浴池,中生蓮華大如車輪,華有千葉七寶為莖,其色妙好佛蹈其上,及諸菩薩所可蹈華,皆生五百葉,弟子乘者華生五百葉。

申日見火坑作此變化,心中驚悴即大惶怖,頭面作禮。佛入其舍,菩薩弟子皆悉坐定,申日懺悔,前白佛言:「我大無狀所作非法,今飯食中皆有毒藥,乞得更備辦,宿留須臾。」

佛言:「持毒飯來,我自食之。」

申日歡喜即如佛教,分佈飯具皆悉周遍,便即受之咒愿達嚫。其毒飯者變為百味,香聞十方,其有聞此飯香氣者,自然飽滿身得安隱,皆發無上平等道意。飯食畢竟,

佛陀進入城中時,腳踏門檻,三千國土(Trisahasra-Mahasahasra-lokadhatu,三千大千世界)都發生大震動,所有疾病都被消除治癒,盲人能看見,聾人能聽見,啞巴能說話,跛腳的人能行走,所有中毒的人,毒性都消失了。各種樂器不用敲打也能自己發出聲音,金銀、七寶(sapta-ratna,七寶)都發出聲音,飛鳥、走獸互相呼應悲鳴。這時,十方神(ten directions gods,十方神)以及諸天人(devas and humans,天人),各自帶領著不可計數的尊神,都跟隨佛陀前往申日(Shenyri,人名)的住所。

佛陀踩踏的火坑變成了浴池,中間生長出蓮花,大如車輪,蓮花有一千片花瓣,用七寶(sapta-ratna,七寶)做花莖,顏色美妙,佛陀踩在上面,以及各位菩薩(Bodhisattva,菩薩)所踩踏的蓮花,都生長出五百片花瓣,弟子乘坐的蓮花也生長出五百片花瓣。

申日(Shenyri,人名)見到火坑發生這樣的變化,心中驚慌恐懼,非常害怕,以頭面頂禮。佛陀進入他的住所,菩薩(Bodhisattva,菩薩)和弟子們都坐定后,申日(Shenyri,人名)懺悔,上前對佛陀說:『我非常愚昧,做了不合法的事情,現在飯食中都有毒藥,請允許我重新準備,稍作停留。』

佛陀說:『把有毒的飯拿來,我自己吃。』

申日(Shenyri,人名)歡喜地按照佛陀的教導去做,分發飯具,使之周遍,然後接受飯食,唸誦咒語,表達敬意。那些有毒的飯食變成了百種美味,香味傳遍十方,凡是聞到這種飯香氣味的人,自然感到飽滿,身體得到安穩,都發起無上平等道意(anuttara-samyak-sambodhi-citta,無上正等正覺之心)。飯食完畢。

【English Translation】 English version: 'Now the Buddha is emitting golden light. This is a response from the Buddha to the aspiration for the Path. We should go and see him; there is no need to stop him.' But his father still did not believe.

At that time, the first wife of Shenyri (Shenyri, a name), named Yueyu (Yueyu, a name), who was also Zhanluo Famu (Zhanluo Famu, a name), seeing this auspicious change, leaped with joy and immediately generated the unsurpassed, true, and right mind of enlightenment (anuttara-samyak-sambodhi-citta, the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment).

Then, Zhanluo Famu (Zhanluo Famu, a name) said to her mother, 'Now we should order the five hundred ladies to all adorn themselves and come out to see the Tathagata (Tathagata, Thus Come One). Why? The World Honored One (Lokajyestha, World Honored One) is difficult to encounter; a Buddha appears only once in hundreds of thousands of kalpas.' All five hundred ladies received the instruction and joyfully attended to the Buddha.

When the Buddha entered the city, his foot stepped on the threshold, and the three thousand great thousand worlds (Trisahasra-Mahasahasra-lokadhatu, the great trichiliocosm) all greatly shook. All diseases were eliminated and healed, the blind could see, the deaf could hear, the mute could speak, the lame could walk, and the poison of all those who had been poisoned ceased to function. All musical instruments played without being struck, gold, silver, and the seven treasures (sapta-ratna, seven kinds of treasures) all made sounds, and birds and beasts harmonized and cried mournfully. At that time, the gods of the ten directions (ten directions gods, gods of all directions) and all the devas and humans (devas and humans, gods and humans), each with countless venerable deities, all followed and went to Shenyri's (Shenyri, a name) residence.

The fire pit that the Buddha stepped on transformed into a bathing pool, in the middle of which grew a lotus flower as large as a chariot wheel. The flower had a thousand petals, with stems made of the seven treasures (sapta-ratna, seven kinds of treasures), its color was exquisite. The Buddha stepped on it, and the lotus flowers that the Bodhisattvas (Bodhisattva, enlightened beings) stepped on all grew five hundred petals, and the flowers on which the disciples rode grew five hundred petals.

Shenyri (Shenyri, a name), seeing the fire pit undergo such a transformation, was startled and frightened in his heart, and was greatly terrified, prostrating with his head and face to the ground. The Buddha entered his residence, and the Bodhisattvas (Bodhisattva, enlightened beings) and disciples all sat down. Shenyri (Shenyri, a name) repented and said to the Buddha, 'I am very ignorant and have done unlawful things. Now there is poison in the food. Please allow me to prepare it again and stay for a moment.'

The Buddha said, 'Bring the poisoned food; I will eat it myself.'

Shenyri (Shenyri, a name) joyfully did as the Buddha instructed, distributing the food utensils so that they were all complete, and then received the food, chanting mantras and expressing reverence. The poisoned food transformed into hundreds of flavors, and the fragrance spread in all directions. Those who smelled the fragrance of this food naturally felt full, their bodies were at peace, and they all generated the unsurpassed, equal mind of enlightenment (anuttara-samyak-sambodhi-citta, the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment). The meal was finished.


五百夫人及旃羅法為佛作禮,卻住一面,長者申日自取小床于佛前坐,而白佛言:「世尊神通有三達智,我之所作想佛已了,不即逆告語我,乃令吾等興立非法造此惡事,佛豈不知我所議耶?」

佛告申日:「乃昔過去阿僧祇劫,爾時有佛號提和竭如來,為等正覺,其明無量度諸懈廢,與眾開士及大弟子無央數俱行入城。時有長者名鞞陀衛,時適出城,有梵志女,鮮潔少雙,執持名華。時長者子即以銀錢五百,從賣華女得華五莖,以散佛上。佛即授其決言:『汝卻後無數阿僧祇劫,當得作佛號釋迦文。汝作佛時,當有長者號名申日,與異道人合構逆事,火坑、毒飯規欲試汝。雖有此惡,當因汝得度。』」

佛告申日:「時長者子今我身是,我乃爾時從如來授記,即得明決之定,以為悉豫知有汝名字,況汝昨日所謀議事,豈不知乎?當知諸佛善權之慧,欲以因緣有所起發。」

長者申日聞佛所說即得法忍,復自嘆言:「如來之智無所不度,明知我今不復受罪。所以者何?過去世時錠光如來豫說我名,今當爲佛之所開化,以是言之不復受罪。」

時佛說法于王舍城,長者居士無央數千,及異道人五百之眾,皆發無上正真道意。五百夫人即時逮得不退轉地。月光童子從坐而起,讚歎佛已,而白佛言

【English Translation】 English version The five hundred ladies and the teacher Chanluo paid homage to the Buddha and stood aside. The elder Shenri took a small bed himself and sat in front of the Buddha, saying to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, with your divine powers and the three kinds of wisdom (the knowledge of past lives, the divine eye, and the extinction of outflows), you must already know what I have done. Why didn't you tell me immediately, causing us to develop unlawful thoughts and commit such evil deeds? Does the Buddha not know my plans?' The Buddha told Shenri: 'In the past, countless asamkhya kalpas ago, there was a Buddha named Tihovakala Tathagata (one of the past seven Buddhas), a Samyak-sambuddha (a title of the Buddha). His light was immeasurable, capable of liberating all the lazy and negligent, and he entered the city with countless Bodhisattvas and great disciples. At that time, there was an elder named Bhedawei, who happened to be leaving the city and encountered a Brahman woman, fresh and beautiful, holding precious flowers. The elder's son then used five hundred silver coins to buy five stems of flowers from the flower-selling woman and scattered them on the Buddha. The Buddha then prophesied: 'You will become a Buddha after countless asamkhya kalpas, named Shakyamuni (the name of the present Buddha). When you become a Buddha, there will be an elder named Shenri, who will conspire with heretics, plotting rebellious acts, using fire pits and poisoned rice to test you. Although there will be these evil deeds, liberation will be attained because of them.' The Buddha told Shenri: 'The elder's son at that time is now me. I received the prophecy from the Tathagata at that time and obtained the certainty of clear understanding (a clear understanding of the future), so I knew your name in advance. How could I not know what you plotted yesterday? You should know that the skillful wisdom of all Buddhas is to initiate certain things through causes and conditions.' The elder Shenri, upon hearing what the Buddha said, immediately attained the Dharma-kshanti (acceptance and understanding of the Dharma), and sighed to himself: 'The wisdom of the Tathagata is all-encompassing, clearly knowing that I will no longer suffer punishment in the future. Why? Because in the past, Dipankara Tathagata (a past Buddha) had already foretold my name, and now I am about to be enlightened by the Buddha, so I will no longer suffer punishment.' At that time, the Buddha was teaching the Dharma in Rajagriha, and countless thousands of elders and laypeople, as well as five hundred heretics, all aroused the supreme Bodhicitta (the determination to attain Buddhahood). The five hundred ladies immediately attained the stage of non-retrogression (the state of no longer regressing). The youth Moonlight arose from his seat, praised the Buddha, and said to the Buddha


:「設我來世得作佛時,令我國土一切人民無有噁心皆應質樸,有諸惡國人民剛強五濁賤世,我願于中而開化之。」

佛告阿難:「汝聞月光童子所說不乎?」

阿難對曰:「唯然已聞。」

佛告阿難:「我般涅槃千歲已后,經法且欲斷絕,月光童子當出於秦國作聖君,持我經法興隆道化。秦土及諸邊國,鄯善、烏長、歸茲、疏勒、大宛、于填,及諸羌虜夷狄,皆當奉佛尊法,普作比丘。其有一切男子、女人,聞申日經,前所作犯惡逆者皆得除盡。當知世尊之所應度如是如是,其有犯逆尚得度脫,何況至心學佛道者。」

佛說經已,一切眾會莫不歡喜,作禮而去。

佛說申日經

按《開元錄》,此經四譯一失,法護譯中雖有《月光童子經》,亦名《申日經》者,自是一經有二名耳,非別有《申日經》是法護譯者。藏中既有《月光童子經》,為法護譯,斯已矣!此何更有《申日經》為法護之譯耶?則未知此經是誰之譯?又何據謂之法護譯耶?今以錄中有云:「支謙譯中有《申日經》一卷,云與《月光童子經》同本異譯。今撿尋文句,二經不殊,故不雙出雲云。」則藏中必有支謙所譯《月光童子經》,亦名《申日經》者。今諸藏皆無,恐此經即是,而誤安法護之名耳。如是,則四譯

佛說完這部經后,所有在場的聽眾沒有不歡喜的,都行禮后離開了。

《佛說申日經》(Buddha Speaks the Shen Ri Sutra)

【English Translation】 English version: 『Suppose when I attain Buddhahood in a future life, may all the people in my land be without evil intentions and be genuinely simple and honest. For those countries filled with evil, where the people are stubborn and obstinate, and are in a defiled and inferior world, I vow to go there and enlighten and transform them.』

The Buddha told Ananda (one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha): 『Have you heard what the Moonlight Youth (Moonlight Youth) said?』

Ananda replied: 『Yes, I have heard it.』

The Buddha told Ananda: 『A thousand years after my Parinirvana (Parinirvana, a Buddhist term referring to the death of a Buddha or Arhat), when the teachings of the scriptures are about to be cut off, the Moonlight Youth will be born in the Qin kingdom (Qin, an ancient Chinese state) to be a wise and sagacious ruler, upholding my scriptures, promoting the flourishing of Buddhism, and spreading its teachings. The Qin kingdom and all the bordering countries, such as Shanshan (Shanshan, an ancient kingdom in the Western Regions), Wuchang (Wuchang, an ancient kingdom in the Western Regions), Kucha (Kucha, an ancient kingdom in the Western Regions), Kashgar (Kashgar, an ancient kingdom in the Western Regions), Dayuan (Dayuan, an ancient kingdom in the Western Regions), Khotan (Khotan, an ancient kingdom in the Western Regions), and all the Qiang people (Qiang, an ancient Chinese ethnic group), minority peoples, and those in remote regions, should all believe in the Buddha's teachings and universally become Bhiksus (Bhiksu, a Buddhist term referring to male monastics). Among all men and women, those who hear the Shen Ri Sutra (Shen Ri Sutra), all the evil deeds and offenses they have committed in the past will be completely eliminated. It should be known that the beings the World-Honored One (World-Honored One, a respectful title for the Buddha) should save are like this, like this, even those who have committed offenses can be liberated, how much more so those who sincerely and earnestly study the Buddha's path.』

After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, all those present were filled with joy, paid their respects, and departed.

The Buddha Speaks the Shen Ri Sutra

According to the Kaiyuan Catalogue (Kaiyuan Catalogue), this sutra has four translations, one of which has been lost. Although Dharmaraksa's (Dharmaraksa, a famous translator of Buddhist scriptures during the Western Jin Dynasty) translation includes the Moonlight Youth Sutra (Moonlight Youth Sutra), which is also called the Shen Ri Sutra (Shen Ri Sutra), this is just one sutra with two names, and there is no separate Shen Ri Sutra (Shen Ri Sutra) translated by Dharmaraksa (Dharmaraksa). Since the Tripitaka already contains the Moonlight Youth Sutra (Moonlight Youth Sutra) translated by Dharmaraksa (Dharmaraksa), that is sufficient! Why is there another Shen Ri Sutra (Shen Ri Sutra) said to be translated by Dharmaraksa (Dharmaraksa) here? Then it is not known who translated this sutra? And on what basis is it said to be translated by Dharmaraksa (Dharmaraksa)? Now, according to the Kaiyuan Catalogue (Kaiyuan Catalogue): 『Zhi Qian's (Zhi Qian, a translator of Buddhist scriptures during the Wu Kingdom of the Three Kingdoms period) translation contains a volume of the Shen Ri Sutra (Shen Ri Sutra), which is said to be a different translation of the same text as the Moonlight Youth Sutra (Moonlight Youth Sutra). Now, examining the sentences, the two sutras are no different, so they are not included twice.』 Then the Tripitaka must contain the Moonlight Youth Sutra (Moonlight Youth Sutra) translated by Zhi Qian (Zhi Qian), which is also called the Shen Ri Sutra (Shen Ri Sutra). Now, all the Tripitakas do not have it, I am afraid that this sutra is it, and the name of Dharmaraksa (Dharmaraksa) has been mistakenly attached. If so, then there are four translations.


還具矣。冒陳瞽言,以俟來哲。

【English Translation】 English version: I still have more to add. I presumptuously present these blind words of mine, to await the wise ones of the future. I venture to offer my humble opinions, hoping that wise people of later generations will judge them.
