聞如是:

一時,佛在舍衛國祇陀恒,呵雕阿那鋡將五百優婆塞至舍利弗所,作禮已卻坐。舍利弗為說經,大歡喜而退。復至佛所,以頭面著地,叉手繞佛三匝卻坐。

佛問呵雕阿那鋡:「若有何功德,教化五百弟子隨從汝?」

呵雕阿那鋡即長跪叉手言:「我常奉行佛所說四事。何等為四?一者、佈施於人;二者、說善說;三者、瞻視同學給足有無;四者、同學者財共不計。」

佛言:「善哉!善哉!已過去佛,無有過是四事;未來佛亦無有過是四事;今現在佛,亦無有過是四事。」

佛為呵雕阿那鋡說經已,各大歡喜而退。

呵雕阿那鋡還歸入舍,呼諸人客奴婢坐著前,好為說經開解,語生死善惡之道;覆上殿呼諸持藏人、諸妓女著前,為說經戒,皆大歡喜;覆上後殿,為諸夫人婦女,說經戒已訖,還至正殿,齋戒床上,端坐定意,便得等心。

第一天上四王請諸天皆會坐,共稱譽呵雕阿那鋡功德,四天王中尊王下至呵雕阿那鋡舍,面稱譽呵雕阿那鋡功德。呵雕阿那鋡時得等心,不答天王。

一時,佛陀在舍衛國祇陀園(Jetavana of Sravasti)中。呵雕阿那鋡(Khadiravaniya Revata,一位在家居士)帶領五百位優婆塞(upasaka,男居士)來到舍利弗(Sariputra,佛陀的十大弟子之一)處,行禮完畢後退坐一旁。舍利弗為他們說法,他們聽后非常歡喜,然後退去。之後,呵雕阿那鋡又來到佛陀處,以頭面觸地,雙手合十繞佛三圈後退坐一旁。

佛陀問呵雕阿那鋡:「你有什麼功德,能夠教化五百位弟子跟隨你?」

呵雕阿那鋡立即長跪合掌回答說:「我常常奉行佛陀所說的四件事。是哪四件事呢?第一,佈施給他人;第二,宣說善法;第三,照顧同學,供給他們生活所需;第四,與同學之間財產共有,不分彼此。」

佛陀說:「好啊!好啊!過去的佛,沒有超過這四件事的;未來的佛,也沒有超過這四件事的;現在世的佛,也沒有超過這四件事的。」

佛陀為呵雕阿那鋡說法完畢,大家都非常歡喜地退去。

呵雕阿那鋡回到家中,叫來所有的客人、奴婢,讓他們坐在前面,好好地為他們說法開解,講述生死善惡的道理;又登上殿堂,叫來所有持戒者(持,原文如此,疑為持戒之人)、諸(原文如此,疑為修行之人)坐在前面,為他們宣說經戒,大家都非常歡喜;又登上後殿,為各位夫人婦女宣說經戒完畢,然後回到正殿,在齋戒的床上,端正坐好,安定心意,便獲得了平等心。

第一天上(忉利天)的四王(四大天王)邀請諸天都來集會,共同稱讚呵雕阿那鋡的功德,四天王中最尊貴的國王下到呵雕阿那鋡的住所,當面稱讚呵雕阿那鋡的功德。當時呵雕阿那鋡正處於等心中,沒有回答天王。

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra Spoken by the Buddha on Khadiravaniya Revata

Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Zhu Tan Wu Lan of Tianzhu during the Eastern Jin Dynasty

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in the Jetavana of Sravasti. Khadiravaniya Revata, accompanied by five hundred upasakas, went to Sariputra, paid homage, and sat to one side. Sariputra expounded the Dharma for them, and they departed with great joy. Then, Khadiravaniya Revata went to the Buddha, prostrated with his head to the ground, circumambulated the Buddha three times with folded hands, and sat to one side.

The Buddha asked Khadiravaniya Revata, 'What merits do you possess that enable you to teach and guide five hundred disciples to follow you?'

Khadiravaniya Revata immediately knelt down, folded his hands, and said, 'I constantly practice the four things taught by the Buddha. What are the four? First, giving alms to others; second, speaking good Dharma; third, caring for fellow students, providing for their needs; fourth, sharing possessions with fellow students without calculation.'

The Buddha said, 'Excellent! Excellent! No Buddhas of the past have surpassed these four things; no Buddhas of the future will surpass these four things; and no Buddhas of the present surpass these four things.'

After the Buddha finished speaking the Dharma for Khadiravaniya Revata, everyone departed with great joy.

Khadiravaniya Revata returned home, summoned all the guests, servants, and slaves, had them sit before him, and kindly expounded the Dharma for them, explaining the principles of birth, death, good, and evil. Then, he ascended to the hall, summoned all the precept holders (持, presumed to be those who uphold precepts), and all the ** (諸, presumed to be practitioners), had them sit before him, and expounded the Sutras and precepts for them, and everyone was greatly delighted. Then, he ascended to the rear hall and expounded the Sutras and precepts for all the ladies and women. After finishing, he returned to the main hall, sat upright on the fasting bed, calmed his mind, and attained equanimity.

The Four Kings (Caturmaharajika) of the first heaven (Trayastrimsa Heaven) invited all the devas to assemble and collectively praised the merits of Khadiravaniya Revata. The most honored king among the Four Heavenly Kings descended to Khadiravaniya Revata's residence and praised Khadiravaniya Revata's merits in person. At that time, Khadiravaniya Revata was in a state of equanimity and did not respond to the Heavenly King.

比丘,至呵雕阿那鋡舍,呵雕阿那鋡起迎比丘前坐,比丘說言:「佛坐中常相稱譽功德。」呵雕阿那鋡問比丘言:「佛稱譽我時,邊有白衣無?」

比丘言:「無有白衣,正使有白衣,有何等嫌疑耶?」

呵雕阿那鋡言:「佛語至誠,恐白衣不信者,便當墮泥犁中;正使信佛語者,便復來承事我,佈施我,我不喜煩擾於人,以是故問耳。」比丘辭去。

呵雕阿那鋡言:「想朝來未食,且留飲食。」便行澡水,下飯食訖。

比丘還白佛言:「屬至呵雕阿那鋡舍,道說言:『佛坐中大相稱譽。』呵雕阿那鋡因問我言:『佛稱譽我時,邊有白衣無?』我言:『無白衣,正使有白衣有何等嫌疑?』呵雕阿那鋡言:『佛稱譽我,實至誠不妄,白衣不信佛語者,便當墮泥犁中;正使信者,便復來承事我,我不喜煩擾他人,以是故問耳。』」

佛言:「善哉!善哉!我不常為汝曹說呵雕阿那鋡有七事,今復益一事為八事。何等為八事?一者、不求不欲令人知;二者、信不欲令人知;三者、自羞不欲令人知;四者、自慚不欲令人知;五者、精進不欲令人知;六者、自觀不欲令人知;七者、得禪不欲令人知;八者、黠慧不欲令人知。所以不欲令人知者,不欲煩擾於人,故不欲令人知。」

【English Translation】 English version: A Bhikkhu went to Hadiao Anahan (呵雕阿那鋡, a person's name). Hadiao Anahan rose to greet the Bhikkhu and invited him to sit down. The Bhikkhu said, 'The Buddha often praises your merits in the Sangha.' Hadiao Anahan asked the Bhikkhu, 'When the Buddha praises me, are there any laypeople present?' The Bhikkhu replied, 'There are no laypeople. Even if there were laypeople, what suspicion would there be?' Hadiao Anahan said, 'The Buddha's words are truthful, but I worry that if laypeople do not believe the Buddha's words, they will fall into Nili (泥犁, a hell realm); even if they believe, they will come to serve me and give me offerings. I do not like to disturb others, so I ask this.' The Bhikkhu took his leave. Hadiao Anahan said, 'I suppose you have not eaten this morning; please stay and have some food.' Then he prepared washing water and set out the food. The Bhikkhu returned and reported to the Buddha, 'I went to Hadiao Anahan's residence and said, 'The Buddha often praises you in the Sangha.' Hadiao Anahan then asked me, 'When the Buddha praises me, are there any laypeople present?' I replied, 'There are no laypeople. Even if there were laypeople, what suspicion would there be?' Hadiao Anahan said, 'The Buddha praises me truthfully, but if laypeople do not believe the Buddha's words, they will fall into Nili; even if they believe, they will come to serve me. I do not like to disturb others, so I ask this.' The Buddha said, 'Good! Good! Have I not often told you that Hadiao Anahan has seven qualities? Now I will add one more, making eight. What are the eight qualities? First, he does not seek or desire to be known by others; second, he has faith but does not want others to know; third, he is self-restrained but does not want others to know; fourth, he is ashamed of wrongdoing but does not want others to know; fifth, he is diligent in practice but does not want others to know; sixth, he contemplates himself but does not want others to know; seventh, he attains Dhyana (禪定, meditative states) but does not want others to know; eighth, he is wise but does not want others to know. The reason he does not want others to know is that he does not want to disturb others.' The Buddha finished speaking this Sutra.
