「若著慳貪,人天所賤,是以智者應當佈施。所以者何?我昔曾聞,有大長者,名曰盧至,其家巨富財產無量,倉庫盈溢如毗沙門,由其往昔于勝福田修佈施因,故獲其報。然其施時不能至心,以是之故,雖復富有,意常下劣;所著衣裳,垢膩不凈;所可食者,雜谷稗莠藜藿草菜,以充其饑;酢漿空水,用療其渴;乘朽故車,編草草葉,用以為蓋;於己財物,皆生慳吝,勞神役思,勤加守護,營理疲苦,猶如奴僕,為一切人之所嗤笑。」

爾時,羅睺羅即說偈言:

「所施因不同,  受果各有異,  信施志誠濃,  獲報恣心意。  若不懷殷重,  徒施無凈報,  盧至雖巨富,  輕賤致嗤笑。

「又於一時城中節會,莊嚴屋宅,塗飾彩畫,懸繒幡蓋,琉璃裝飾,處處周遍懸諸華冠,香水灑地嚴眾名華,窗牖門戶,以華裝校,各各皆有種種伎樂歌舞嬉戲,歡娛受樂,如諸天宮。諸門之中,皆以金瓶,盛滿香水,諸里巷中,懸繒幡蓋,散眾名華,香水灑地。

「盧至爾時見諸人民,種種會同,戲舞盡歡,便生念言:『奴婢、乞人、下賤之者

'If one is attached to stinginess and greed, they will be despised by humans and gods. Therefore, the wise should practice generosity. Why is this so? I once heard that there was a great elder named Lu Zhi (Lu Zhi, personal name), whose family was extremely wealthy, with immeasurable property, and warehouses overflowing like the abode of Vaisravana (Vaisravana, a Buddhist guardian deity). This was because in the past, he cultivated the cause of generosity in a supreme field of merit, and thus received this reward. However, when he gave, he could not do so with sincerity. Because of this, although he was wealthy, his mind was often base and inferior; the clothes he wore were dirty and unclean; what he ate were mixed grains, weeds, goosefoot, and wild vegetables to fill his hunger; sour rice wine and plain water to quench his thirst; he rode in a dilapidated cart, using woven grass or leaves as a cover; towards his own possessions, he was very stingy, exhausting his mind and thoughts, diligently guarding them, managing them with weariness and hardship, like a servant, and was ridiculed by everyone.'

At that time, Rahula (Rahula, Buddha's son) spoke in verse:

'The causes of giving are different, The fruits received are also different, Sincere giving with faith, Receives rewards according to one's wishes. If one does not cherish earnestness, Giving in vain yields no pure reward, Although Lu Zhi is extremely wealthy, His meanness leads to ridicule.'

'Also, at one time, during a festival gathering in the city, people decorated their houses, painted colorful pictures, hung silk banners and canopies, adorned with lapis lazuli, everywhere were hung splendid floral crowns, fragrant water sprinkled on the ground, and adorned with various famous flowers, windows and doors were decorated with flowers, and each place had various kinds of music, singing, dancing, and play, joyfully enjoying themselves, like the palaces of the gods. In each of the city gates, golden vases were placed, filled with fragrant water, and in each of the lanes, silk banners and canopies were hung, various famous flowers were scattered, and fragrant water was sprinkled on the ground.'

'At that time, Lu Zhi saw the people gathering in various ways, playing, dancing, and rejoicing to their hearts' content, and he thought to himself: 'Slaves, beggars, and ** people'


,皆假借衣服,食美飲食;我今衣服瓔珞財寶自足,我今何為而不自樂?』疾走歸家,自取鑰匙,開庫藏門,取五錢已,還閉鎖門,即自思念:『我今若於家中食者,母妻眷屬,不可週遍,若至他家,或有主人及以乞者,來從我索。』於是即用兩錢買麨,兩錢酤酒,一錢買蔥,從自家中,衣衿裹鹽,赍出城外,趣于樹下。既至樹下,見有多烏,若此停止,烏來摶撮,即詣冢間,見有諸狗,復更逃避,至空靜處。酒中著鹽,和麨食蔥,先不飲酒,即時大醉。既大醉已,而作是言:『舉國即時大作歡樂,我今何為獨不歡樂?』即便起舞揚聲而歌,其歌辭曰:

「『縱令帝釋,  今日歡樂,  尚不及我,   況毗沙門。』

「復作是言:『我今節慶際,縱酒大歡樂,逾過毗沙門,亦勝天帝釋。』

「釋提桓因與無數天眾欲至祇桓,于其道邊,見此盧至既醉且舞,而歌言:『勝於帝釋。』帝釋默唸:『此慳貪人,屏處飲酒,罵辱於我。』復作是念:『我於今者,莫至佛所,先惱于彼。』

「釋提桓因,即變己身,猶如盧至,即到其家,聚集父母、僕使、眷屬,于母前坐,而白母言:『聽我愛語,我於前后,有大慳鬼,隨逐於我,所以使我惜不啖食,不與父母及以眷屬錢財寶物,皆由慳鬼。今日出行

He hurried home, took the key himself, opened the door of the treasury, took five coins, and locked the door again, thinking to himself: 'If I eat at home, my mother, wife, and relatives cannot be satisfied; if I go to someone else's house, there may be a host or a beggar who will ask me for it.' So he used two coins to buy roasted flour, two coins to buy wine, and one coin to buy scallions. From his own home, he wrapped salt in his collar and went out of the city to a tree. When he arrived under the tree, he saw many crows stopping there. If he stopped like this, the crows would come to snatch it. Then he went to the graveyard and saw many dogs, and he avoided them again, going to an empty and quiet place. He put salt in the wine, mixed it with roasted flour and ate it with scallions, not drinking the wine first, and immediately became very drunk. 「即時大開庫藏,上妙瓔珞,先用與母,次者與婦,舍內男女,盡皆遍與,其外來客,亦與瓔珞及以衣食,作眾伎樂。其家眷屬,眾香涂身,燒黑沉水。於時帝釋,一手捉母,一手攜婦,歡樂起舞,歡娛嬉戲,不可具說。

「舍衛城人皆聞盧至長者慳鬼得除,一切集會盡來觀之。盧至醉醒,還來入城。即歸己家,見諸人眾,充塞其門,復聞家中歌舞之聲,極大驚愕,作是思惟:『將非是王以瞋我故,將諸群臣大集兵眾來至我家,欲誅於我?為是舍衛城人,因作節會,盡入我家?為是諸天,欲增益我,來至我家,作斯伎樂?為是家人破我庫藏,而自啖食?』思惟是已,疾走衝門,高聲大叫,喚其家人。時其家人,音樂聲亂,都無聞者。

「帝釋聞喚聲,語眾人言:『誰打門喚?汝等且止音樂,或能是彼慳鬼還來。』人聞有鬼,即大開門,一切走避。時彼

If that miserly ghost were to come again, it would ultimately not be able to trouble me again. However, this miserly ghost resembles me. If it comes, all the gatekeepers should beat it severely. It will surely falsely claim: 'I am Lujai (name of an elder).' All family members, do not believe its words.' Then he opened the treasury wide, took out all kinds of wealth, prepared good food and drink, and had his mother, wife, and relatives all fully satisfied. After the meal, he told the gatekeepers: 'Quickly close the door. If the miserly ghost comes, wait until I have distributed the necklaces, bestowed clothes, and played all kinds of music, and then open the door.' Immediately he opened the treasury wide, took out the finest necklaces, first gave them to his mother, then to his wife, and all the men and women in the house were given them. The guests who came from outside were also given necklaces, clothing, food, and drink, and various kinds of music were played. His family members adorned their bodies with various fragrances and burned black aloeswood incense. At this time, Sakra (name of a deity), holding his mother in one hand and his wife in the other, joyfully danced and played, which cannot be fully described. The people of Shravasti (name of a city) all heard that the miserly ghost of the elder Lujai (name of a person) had been removed, and everyone came to see it. He went straight home and saw many people crowding in front of his door, and he heard the sound of singing and dancing from inside the house. He was very surprised and thought: 'Could it be that the king, because he resents me, has brought his ministers and soldiers to my house to kill me? Or is it that the people of Shravasti (name of a city) are celebrating a festival and have all come to my house? Or is it that the gods want to increase my blessings and have come to my house to play this music? Or is it that my family members have broken into my treasury and are eating and drinking themselves?' Thinking this, he quickly ran to the door, shouted loudly, and called out to his family. At that time, his family members were disturbed by the sound of the music and did not hear him. She turned to the wife and said: 'That person is your husband, why don't you recognize him and grab him now?' His wife felt ashamed and said: 'Strange! Why not make him disappear? I will never be his wife.' The wife said to Di Shi: 'Master! I'


今寧在爾邊而死,終不在彼鬼邊而生。』

「釋語家人:『爾定知我是盧至者,何為前彼鬼使入耶?』時其家人,聞此語已,即時倒曳盧至之腳,牽挽打棒驅令出門。到里巷中,舉聲大哭,唱言:『怪哉!我於今者,身形面首,為異於本,何故家人,見棄如是?』復語左右:『我今此身,如本身不?今我之面,如本面不?言語行來,長短相貌,為異不異?』傍人語言:『汝故如本,與先不異。』

「復語人言:『我今是誰?將非化作他異人不?竟為字誰,我今為在何處?』復長嘆曰:『奇哉!怪哉!我於今者,知何所道。』盧至爾時,如似顛狂,其餘親里,非家人者,咸來慰喻:『汝慎莫懼!汝是盧至。汝於今者,在舍衛城中市上,我等是汝親里,故來看汝。汝好強意,當作方計以自分明。』

「盧至爾時聞是語已,意用小安,抆淚而言,更問餘人:『我為實是盧至以不?』餘人答言:『汝實是盧至。』盧至語眾人言:『汝等皆能為我證不?』眾人皆言:『我等諸人,皆為汝證,實是盧至。』

「盧至答言:『汝等若爾,聽我廣說因緣:

「『誰有年少人,  與我極相似,   共我所愛婦,  同牀接膝坐。   所親家眷屬,  見打驅逐出,   所親皆愛彼,  安止我家中。

At that time, there was a minister named Sujiu (name of a person), who immediately stood up, put his palms together, and said to the king, 'Great King, you are wise! The king's wisdom and compassion, pitying the wronged, should be like this.'

'For those who are worried, suffering, and fearful, the king is their protector, For those who are poor and in distress, the king is their friend. For those who are upright and cultivate goodness, the king is their Dharma companion, For all those who do evil, the king is their elephant hook (meaning to tame).'

At that time, Luzhi (name of a person) prostrated himself on the ground and said to the king, 'The place where my family secretly hides treasures, that person will never know. I have secret matters on my body, how could he know? I only hope that the Great King will carefully examine this for me.'

The king then sent a messenger to summon the person who looked like Luzhi (name of a person), ordering him to come quickly. The messenger summoned him, and that person came to the king's place and stood aside. The king observed the two people and could not distinguish them. The king carefully observed them, and a thought arose in his mind that had never arisen before: 'Their age, appearance, body size, facial expressions, speech, and complexion are all the same, as if created by illusion, without any difference. Now these two people are standing before me, indistinguishable, which makes me feel surprised and doubtful.'

The king asked the person who had been summoned, 'Who are you?' That person then sighed and said, 'I am now living in vain, it would be better to die. How could I be born in the kingdom and not be recognized by the king? Instead, you ask me, what is my name?'

The king pondered for a moment and said to Di Shi (Di Shi), 'I want to ask you, Luzhi's (Luzhi) nature is stingy and greedy, while you like to give alms. Your natures are different. Why do you now say that you are Luzhi (Luzhi)?' Di Shi (Di Shi) replied, 'Your Majesty should inquire carefully in this way. It is indeed as you say, but I personally learned from the Buddha that those who are stingy and greedy will fall into the realm of hungry ghosts, suffering from hunger and thirst for hundreds of millions of years, seeking pus, blood, excrement, and other impure things, but ultimately unable to obtain even a hair's breadth of it. Cool rivers and springs will turn into flowing fire. I have heard that stinginess and greed have such faults, and out of fear and terror, I want to abandon this evil habit. Therefore, I abandoned stinginess, and the mind of generosity arose.'

The king said, 'Indeed, there is such a principle, just as dirty clothes become clean when washed with water, so the mind defiled by afflictions is removed when hearing the Dharma.' The king said to his ministers, 'How can we know which of these two is Luzhi (Luzhi) and which is not Luzhi (Luzhi)?' An experienced minister replied, 'Ask them about all the secret matters of their household. If there are any similarities or differences, then we can know.'

The king said, 'I have many affairs and cannot inquire in detail. As you said, we should inquire in this way.' So he separated the two men and placed them in different locations. Then he asked, 'Now, your relatives inside and outside the family, their ages, the number of people and their names, all the houses and doors in your home, as well as your wealth, all the treasuries, all kinds of things above and below ground, each of you should remember them, write them down in detail, and bring them to me quickly.' So the two men each brought their written materials, and everything, the secret matters, and the handwriting, were exactly the same.

The king saw this and had a thought he had never had before: 'Like I am now'


者,盡其神思,種種籌量,不能分別。此非人事,必是非人所為。』王言:『還喚此二人,來到我邊。』

「王久看已,語使人言:『喚其母來。』便即喚來其母。到已向王拜敬,王合掌言:『我亦敬老。』老母白言:『愿王萬歲,離諸怨害,修福不倦。』王敕敷座,命老母坐。王語母言:『今此二人,誰是汝子?誰非汝子?』帝釋密語母言:『莫復更使見苦如前。』母言:『子汝莫愁也。』

「老母敬白王言:『此兒慈孝,種種供養,孝順於我,此是我子;彼不恭孝,常於我所,無親愛心,知非我子。而此二人,雖知好醜,言音相似,我亦不能別。』

「王復問言:『我欲更問餘事。汝養此兒,自小之時,及以洗浴,頗見身上,隱屏之處,瘡瘢黑子,私密之事,記識以不?』母言:『有之。』帝釋思惟:『我今所作當同老母。』帝釋於時諦聽母語。

「母語王言:『我兒左脅下,有小豆許瘢。』帝釋念言:『假使有瘢如須彌山,我亦能作,況復小瘢。』即便化作。

「王即念言:『我今斷事,必得決定。』王言:『汝等各脫左腋,高舉其臂。』既舉臂已,見兩瘢不異。王及群臣,大聲而笑,而作是言:『如此之事,未曾聞見,能使人笑,能使人怖,能使人疑,此為奇事,甚可怖畏。

母親對國王說:『我的兒子左邊腋下,有一個像小豆一樣大的疤痕。』帝釋天心想:『即使有像須彌山(Sumeru,佛教宇宙觀中的山名)一樣大的疤痕,我也能造出來,更何況是小疤痕。』立刻就變化出一個疤痕。

國王心想:『我現在斷案,一定要做出決定。』國王說:『你們各自脫下左邊的袖子,高高舉起手臂。』舉起手臂后,看到兩個疤痕沒有區別。國王和群臣,大聲笑著,說道:『這樣的事情,從未聽說過,能使人發笑,能使人害怕,能使人疑惑,這是奇事,非常可怕。』

【English Translation】 English version: 'They have exhausted their minds and used all sorts of methods, but they cannot distinguish them. This is not something that humans can do; it must be the work of spirits.' The king said, 'Call these two people back to my side.'

The king looked at them carefully for a long time and said to his attendants, 'Call their mother here.' Their mother was immediately summoned. After the mother arrived, she bowed to the king, and the king, with his palms together, said, 'I also respect the elderly.' The old mother replied, 'May the king live ten thousand years, be free from all resentment and harm, and tirelessly cultivate blessings.' The king ordered a seat to be prepared and asked the old mother to sit down. The king said to the mother, 'Which of these two is your son? Which is not your son?' Devendra (Śakra/Indra, the ruler of the devas in Buddhist cosmology) secretly told the old mother, 'Do not let them suffer as before.' The mother said, 'Children, do not worry.'

The old mother respectfully said to the king, 'This child is kind and filial, offering me various kinds of support and being filial to me; this is my son. That child is not respectful or filial, and he often has no affection for me; I know he is not my son. But these two people, although they know good and bad, and their voices are similar, I cannot distinguish them.'

The king then asked, 'I want to ask you other things. When you raised these children from a young age, and when you bathed them, have you ever seen on their bodies, in hidden places, scars, moles, or private matters that you remember?' The mother said, 'Yes, I have.' Devendra thought, 'What I am doing now should be the same as the old mother.' Devendra then listened carefully to the mother's words.

The mother said to the king, 'My son has a scar the size of a small bean under his left armpit.' Devendra thought, 'Even if there were a scar as big as Mount Sumeru (the central mountain in Buddhist cosmology), I could create it, let alone a small scar.' He immediately transformed one.

The king thought, 'Now I must make a decisive judgment.' The king said, 'Each of you take off your left sleeve and raise your arm high.' After they raised their arms, they saw that the two scars were no different. The king and his ministers laughed loudly and said, 'Such a thing has never been heard or seen before; it can make people laugh, it can make people afraid, it can make people doubt. This is a strange and terrifying thing.'

We should take these two men to Jetavana (祇洹精舍), to the Buddha (佛所); surely we can get a resolution there. It is disrupting the joy of our celebration here.』 Then the king spoke in verse: 『The Buddha's sun has long been shining, able to save the world, liberating from all faults and evils, drying up the sea of desire. His face is like a full moon, with eyes of complete supernatural power, revered and supported by the three realms, free among all beings. The greatly compassionate one will surely be able to dispel our doubts; all praise, this is truly excellent.』 Having spoken the verse, the king and his ministers, each adorned themselves with heavenly crowns and upper garments, decorating their bodies with pearls and jeweled necklaces, holding incense and flowers, each following the queen, placing the two Rucis (盧至) on two elephants, adorned in various ways. At that time, the king himself rode in a chariot adorned with feathered canopies, making music of hundreds of thousands of kinds, following the queen, going to Jetavana (祇洹精舍), abandoning the king's five symbols of power: heavenly crown, jeweled canopy, sword, leather shoes, and mani jewel (摩尼珠), arranging his appearance, going to where the Buddha was. At that time, the World Honored One (世尊), was surrounded by the eight classes of gods and dragons (天龍八部), and the fourfold assembly. Only the Buddha alone, has attained liberation, acting as a true friend to all beings; for all the blind and ignorant, the Buddha acts as their eyes. We, due to various causes and conditions, are unable to distinguish, which of these two men is Rucis (盧至), and which is not Rucis (盧至)?』 Then he placed the two Rucis (盧至), before the Buddha. All the people, sat in silence. The Rucis (盧至) who was a transformation, had a joyful expression, adorned with various ornaments, jeweled necklaces decorating his body, remaining silent.

「爾時帝釋,見其愁悴,而自微笑。波斯匿王,從坐而起,合掌問佛言:『於此事中,佛能證知,一切眾生,為煩惱所闇。唯佛世尊,執于慧炬,導諸眾生解脫之路,如大醫王,亦如導者,能施一切眾生無畏,亦施一切眾生善根之財,摧滅結使,故名大仙。善哉!世尊!愿以智火,燒我煩惱疑網稠林。唯愿世尊,斷我等疑,今此二人,誰是誰非。』

「爾時世尊,舉相好臂莊嚴之手,語帝釋言:『汝作何事?』

「帝釋即滅盧至身相,還複本形,種種光明,以如意珠,瓔珞其身,合掌向佛,而說偈言:

「『「常為慳所伏,  不肯自衣食,    以五錢酒麨,  著鹽而飲之;    飲已即大醉,  戲笑而歌舞,    輕罵我諸天。  以是因緣故,    我故苦惱之。」』

「佛語帝釋:『一切眾生,皆有過罪,宜應放舍。』

「爾時,盧至語帝釋言:『我辛苦所集,一切錢財,汝不用我財物儩耶?』

「帝釋言:『我不損汝一毫財物。』

'At that time, the World Honored One, raised his arm adorned with various beautiful features, and said to Emperor Shitian: 'What are you doing?' 'Emperor Shitian immediately eliminated Luzhi's ugly appearance, restored his original form, emitted various lights, adorned his body with wish-fulfilling jewels, put his palms together towards the Buddha, and spoke this verse: '「Often controlled by stinginess, unwilling to clothe and feed himself, using five coins' worth of wine and fried flour, drinking it with salt; after drinking, he becomes very drunk, playfully laughing, singing, and dancing, disrespectfully scolding us gods. Because of this reason, I am thus afflicting him.」' 'The Buddha told Emperor Shitian: 'All beings have faults and transgressions, it is appropriate to forgive and let go.' 'At that time, Luzhi said to Emperor Shitian: 'All the money and wealth that I have painstakingly accumulated, are you not using my wealth?'
