【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks the Yajñadatta Sutra

Translated by Layman Juqu Jingsheng of the Song Dynasty

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in the country of Kāṇakubjā. In that country, there was a wealthy Brahmin (Brāhmaṇa) named Yajñadatta. He originally practiced ninety-six kinds of non-Buddhist paths, seeking blessings and protection. He heard that people who revered the Buddha could attain wealth, longevity, peace, escape the cycle of birth and death, receive blessings, not fall into the three evil realms, and no longer endure hardship. Yajñadatta thought to himself, 'I should abandon the non-Buddhist paths and serve the Buddha.' Therefore, he went to where the Buddha was, prostrated himself before the Buddha with his head touching the ground, knelt and said to the Buddha, 'I was originally ignorant and without knowledge. I have heard that the Buddha's path is vast and compassionate, universally benefiting all beings. The Buddha is the most honored in heaven, on earth, and among humans, and there is no one who cannot attain peace. I now wish to abandon the non-Buddhist paths I have practiced and take refuge in the Buddha. May the Buddha have mercy on me, and I will receive your teachings.'

The Buddha said, 'What you have said is very good. If you can carefully consider, stop doing evil and do good, what worry is there that you will not attain peace?'

Yajñadatta said to the Buddha, 'Because what I have practiced is not the truth, I take refuge in the Buddha. I hope you can have mercy on us, remove our defiled actions, and accept the Buddha's pure and decisive words. If this is indeed the case, then it would be excellent.' Yajñadatta then stepped forward to receive the five precepts: first, not to kill; second, not to steal; third, not to commit sexual misconduct; fourth, not to lie, not to speak divisively, not to speak harshly, and not to engage in frivolous talk; fifth, not to drink alcohol. After taking the three refuges, he arose, circumambulated the Buddha three times, observed the fast for seven days, and then departed.

After that, he traveled to other countries and saw people killing living beings and hunting, stealing other people's property. Yajñadatta then wanted to follow them. Seeing beautiful women, his mind became greedy. Seeing people arguing about right and wrong, he wanted to join in. Seeing people drinking and becoming intoxicated, he wanted to imitate them. His mind was unsettled, and he wanted to regret his decision, thinking, 'I cannot practice this Buddha-dharma. In the end, I will violate the Buddha's five precepts.'

Then he went to where the Buddha was.

【English Translation】 English version He bowed his head and said to the Buddha: 'I previously received the five precepts (pañca-śīla) from the Buddha, which have many restrictions and do not allow me to follow my own will. Now I am considering giving them up because I cannot serve the Buddha. The Buddha-Dharma is honorable and important, and I am not capable of upholding it. Can I return the five precepts? Is it acceptable to the Buddha?' The Buddha remained silent and did not respond. Before the words had left his mouth, natural ghosts and spirits appeared, holding iron mallets, and struck Yakṣa's head, breaking it open. Then other ghosts and spirits undressed him. Then other ghosts and spirits used iron hooks to grab his mouth and pull out his tongue. Some ** ghosts and spirits deeply cut his genitals with knives. Some ghosts and spirits poured molten copper into his mouth. All around, in front, behind, and to the sides, were ghosts and spirits, competing to tear apart his flesh. Such was Yakṣa, his eyes emitting a foul odor, his face the color of earth, natural fire burning his body, unable to seek life, unable to seek death, the ghosts and spirits holding him very tightly. Seeing this situation, the Buddha felt compassion for him and asked Yakṣa: 'What should you do now?' Yakṣa's mouth was sealed, and he could not speak. He could only raise his hands and beat himself, begging the Buddha for mercy. The Buddha then released his divine power, and the ghosts and spirits were all frightened and ran away. Yakṣa was then able to revive, got up again, bowed his head, and said to the Buddha: 'In my heart are these five thieves (referring to the five skandhas, pañca-skandha), pulling me into evil sins, causing me to speak these evil words. Now I am receiving this retribution. All that I have done has violated the Buddha's teachings. I hope the Buddha will have mercy on me.' The Buddha said: 'It is your own actions of body and mouth. Who should you blame?' Yakṣa said to the Buddha: 'From today onwards, I shall reform myself, uphold the five precepts, observe three annual fasts, six monthly fasts, burn incense, light lamps, and make offerings to the Three Jewels (tri-ratna). My body, mouth, and mind will not transgress again.' The Buddha said: 'Very good! What your own eyes see and your body experiences are all self-made and self-received. Doing good brings good, and thinking evil brings evil. The Buddha is the teacher in the Dharma, teaching people to abandon evil and do good, so that they may eventually attain liberation. All devas and people, the foolish, will be given wisdom and will no longer suffer hardship. From now on, reform and cultivate goodness.'

【English Translation】 English version: 『Good deeds, do not let your mind lead you astray, for that is the root of misleading people.』

After the Buddha finished speaking this Sutra, Yaji's (耶祇) mind was opened and enlightened, and he immediately attained the Sotapanna (須陀洹, Stream-enterer) path, and joyfully departed.

Yaji (耶祇) returned home and immediately ordered everyone in his household, both young and old, to go to the Buddha to receive the Five Precepts, observe three annual fasts, and six monthly fasts. Yaji (耶祇) then renounced his home, shaved his head, donned the kasaya robe, and followed the Buddha to become a Sramana (沙門, ascetic), eventually attaining the Arhat (阿羅漢) path.
