如是我聞:

一時,佛在迦毗羅城你也(二合)誐嚕馱林精舍。時釋族中有一童子名金光王,色相端嚴身肢圓滿,光明晃耀由如日月,聰明殊異俊利過人,尊重自然精勤匪勵,師友耆耄用律其心,富有一切異寶珍玩;雖常受用而不貪著,與自眷屬嬪嬙伎女千五百人,常處宮中受其快樂。

時彼童子,忽於一日聞人說言:「世尊往昔為見三界輪迴苦惱,舍輪王位出家苦行,佛道圓滿,坐于樹下降四種魔,證無上覺。」童子聞已,心大歡喜,即將眷屬及與侍從,前後圍繞往詣佛所。

望精舍門除去憍慢,與諸眷屬徒步趨進,既至佛所,合掌頂禮,而嘆佛曰:「如來之身由如金山,復如寶幢眾寶嚴飾,面如秋月,圓滿清凈三十二相、八十種好,光明遠照由如千日,尊貴吉祥大智精進,具大功德福慧雙備。知一切法,斷一切疑,具一切智為人天師,是三界父救諸有情,現於世間見者歡喜。」

是時,童子作此贊已,旋繞三匝禮佛雙足,卻坐一面欲聞妙法,又復起心:「我生王宮有斯福報?具大力勢因果云何?

一時,佛在迦毗羅城(Kapilavastu)你也(二合)誐嚕馱林精舍。當時釋迦族中有一位童子名叫金光王(Suvarnaprabhasa-kumara),他容貌端正莊嚴,身形圓滿,光明閃耀如同日月,聰明非凡,才智過人,天性尊重他人,精進勤勉,師長和年長者用戒律來約束他的內心,他擁有各種奇珍異寶;雖然經常享用這些寶物,卻不貪戀執著。他與自己的眷屬、嬪妃、歌伎等一千五百人,常住在宮中享受快樂。

當時,這位童子忽然有一天聽到有人說:『世尊往昔爲了見到三界輪迴的苦惱,捨棄了輪王之位出家苦行,佛道圓滿,坐在菩提樹下降伏四種魔,證得了無上正覺。』童子聽了之後,心中非常歡喜,立即帶著眷屬和侍從,前後簇擁著前往佛陀所在的地方。

遠遠望見精舍的門,便除去了驕慢之心,與所有眷屬徒步前進。到達佛陀處后,合掌頂禮,讚歎佛陀說:『如來的身體如同金山,又像寶幢一樣用各種珍寶裝飾,面容像秋天的月亮,圓滿清凈,具足三十二相、八十種好,光明遠照如同千個太陽,尊貴吉祥,具有大智慧,精進勇猛,具備大功德,福德和智慧都圓滿具足。了知一切法,斷除一切疑惑,具足一切智慧,是人天導師,是三界之父,救度一切有情眾生,顯現在世間,見到的人都心生歡喜。』

這時,童子說完這些讚頌之詞后,圍繞佛陀三圈,禮拜佛陀的雙足,然後退到一旁坐下,想要聽聞妙法,又在心中思忖:『我出生在王宮,有這樣的福報,具備如此強大的勢力,這是什麼因果呢?』

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of Golden Light King Child Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by Tripitaka Master Fa Xian, Minister of the Honglu Temple and Great Teacher of Manifest Teaching, under Imperial Order, from the Western Regions.

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in the Nigrodha Grove Vihara (monastery) in Kapilavastu (迦毗羅城). At that time, there was a boy named Suvarnaprabhasa-kumara (金光王童子) in the Shakya clan. His appearance was dignified and handsome, his body was perfectly formed, his radiance shone like the sun and moon, his intelligence was extraordinary, and his talent surpassed others. He naturally respected others and was diligent and assiduous. His teachers and elders used the precepts to discipline his mind. He possessed all kinds of rare and precious treasures; although he often enjoyed them, he was not greedy or attached. He lived in the palace with his family, concubines, and female entertainers, numbering one thousand five hundred people, constantly enjoying happiness.

At that time, the boy suddenly heard someone say one day: 'The World Honored One, in the past, in order to see the suffering of the cycle of rebirth in the Three Realms, renounced the throne of a Chakravartin (wheel-turning king) and practiced asceticism. He perfected the Buddha's path, sat under the Bodhi tree, subdued the four kinds of demons, and attained Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (unexcelled complete enlightenment).' Upon hearing this, the boy was overjoyed and immediately led his family and attendants, surrounded by them, to the place where the Buddha was.

Seeing the gate of the vihara from afar, he removed his arrogance and proceeded on foot with all his family members. Upon arriving at the Buddha's place, he joined his palms and prostrated himself, praising the Buddha, saying: 'The body of the Tathagata (如來) is like a golden mountain, and like a jeweled banner adorned with various treasures. His face is like the autumn moon, perfect and pure, possessing the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor characteristics. His light shines far and wide like a thousand suns. He is noble and auspicious, possessing great wisdom, diligent and courageous, possessing great merit, and complete with both blessings and wisdom. He knows all dharmas (法), cuts off all doubts, possesses all wisdom, is the teacher of humans and devas (天), is the father of the Three Realms, saves all sentient beings, and appears in the world, bringing joy to those who see him.'

At this time, after the boy finished these praises, he circumambulated the Buddha three times, prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet, and then sat down to one side, desiring to hear the wonderful Dharma (法). He also thought in his heart: 'I was born in the royal palace and have such blessings. What is the cause and effect of having such great power?'


爾時,世尊知金光童子心中所念,及在會眾愿欲聞法,便為廣說十二因緣及四聖諦。初中后善言辭巧妙,其義深遠純一無雜,具足清白梵行之相。演是法已,復說金光童子本生因果報應之事。謂童子曰:「往昔過去九十一劫,有毗婆尸如來、應供、正遍知、明行足、善逝、世間解、無上士、調御丈夫、天人師、佛、世尊,出於世間,說法教化利樂眾生,作佛事已,即趣涅盤。

「時有一人種田為業,雖復勤苦而常不足,然于眾善好樂修習,于身口分減積財賄,作毗婆尸像以用供養,所獲果報我今說之。

「諸苾芻!彼田業人所獲之福,于百千生為轉輪聖王王四天下,乘空飛行具足七寶,得大自在身放光明,生生之中受最上樂。受此福已,又生六慾天中為彼天主,經百千生受大快樂;又百千生為梵天王,百千生為凈光天主;百千生為四無色界主,于如是時受天妙樂,后降人間生剎帝利、婆羅門、毗舍之族,常處王位得大自在。

「諸苾芻!今此童子從天界來,又生王宮,先作福業無能侵損,亦無墮落,后獲無漏證於寂滅。

「諸苾芻!其造像人即金光童子是,所有因果我已說之。又復有人,或以玻胝迦寶或末尼寶,或金或銀或鍮或銅,乃至木石或象牙等,鑄寫雕鏤作佛形像;或有舍

【English Translation】 English version:

At that time, the World Honored One (Bhagavan, the Blessed One) knew the thoughts in the mind of Suvarnaprabhasa Kumara (Golden Light Youth, referring to a Bodhisattva), and that the assembly wished to hear the Dharma (Buddhist teachings), so he extensively explained the Twelve Nidanas (Twelve Links of Dependent Origination, the Buddhist theory of the cycle of life) and the Four Noble Truths (Four Noble Truths, the basic teachings of Buddhism). The Buddha's words were good from beginning to end, the meaning was profound and pure, without any impurities, possessing the characteristics of pure Brahmacharya (Brahmacharya, pure conduct). After expounding this Dharma, he also spoke of the causes and effects of the past lives of Suvarnaprabhasa Kumara. The Buddha said to the youth: 'In the past, ninety-one kalpas (kalpas, eons) ago, there was Vipasyin Tathagata (Vipasyin, one of the past seven Buddhas), Arhat (Arhat, one who is worthy of offerings), Samyaksambuddha (Samyaksambuddha, a fully enlightened one), Vidyacharana-sampanna (Vidyacharana-sampanna, one who possesses wisdom and virtue), Sugata (Sugata, one who has gone well), Lokavidu (Lokavidu, one who understands the world), Anuttara (Anuttara, the unsurpassed one), Purushadamyasarathi (Purushadamyasarathi, one who tames beings), Shasta Devanam Manusyanam (Shasta Devanam Manusyanam, teacher of gods and humans), Buddha (Buddha, the awakened one), Bhagavan (Bhagavan, the revered one) appeared in the world, teaching and transforming, benefiting and bringing happiness to sentient beings, and after completing the Buddha's work, he entered Nirvana (Nirvana, liberation).' 'At that time, there was a person who made a living by farming. Although he was diligent and hardworking, he was often in need. However, he was very happy to practice various good deeds, saving money from his food and clothing to make an image of Vipasyin Buddha for offering. I will now tell you about the rewards he received.' 'Bhikkhus (Bhikkhu, Buddhist monks)! The merit that the farmer gained from making offerings to the Buddha image caused him to become a Chakravartin (Chakravartin, an ideal monarch who rules the world) in hundreds of thousands of lives, ruling the four continents (four continents, referring to the entire world), riding on a flying wheel, possessing the seven treasures (seven treasures, precious jewels), obtaining great freedom, and emitting light from his body, enjoying the highest happiness in every life. After enjoying these blessings, he was reborn in the six desire realms (six desire realms, six heavens in Buddhism) as the lord of those heavens, enjoying great happiness for hundreds of thousands of lives; and for hundreds of thousands of lives he was the Brahma King (Brahma, a high-ranking deity in Brahmanism and Buddhism), for hundreds of thousands of lives he was the lord of the Pure Light Heaven; for hundreds of thousands of lives he was the lord of the Four Immaterial Realms (Four Immaterial Realms, the highest level of the Form Realm), enjoying the wonderful pleasures of the heavens at these times, and then descending to the human world, born into the Kshatriya (Kshatriya, the warrior class in Hinduism), Brahmana (Brahmana, the priestly class in Hinduism), and Vaishya (Vaishya, the merchant class in Hinduism) castes, always in a position of power, obtaining great freedom.' 'Bhikkhus! This Suvarnaprabhasa Kumara has come from the heavens and was born in a royal palace because of the meritorious deeds he performed in the past. No one can harm him, and he will not fall into evil realms. Eventually, he will attain the wisdom free from outflows and realize the peace of Nirvana.' 'Bhikkhus! The person who made the image is the current Suvarnaprabhasa Kumara. I have already told you about the causes he made in the past and the effects he is experiencing now.' The Buddha further said, 'If someone uses Sphatika (Sphatika, crystal), Mani (Mani, wish-fulfilling jewel), gold, silver, brass (an alloy), copper, or even wood, stone, or ivory to cast or carve the image of the Buddha; or if someone gives'


利或無舍利,或短或長或大或小,乃至香泥印作佛像,且致如是造像果報。

「諸苾芻!若有善男子、善女人,以所造像,隨得一種志心清凈,以妙香水如法沐浴,所獲功德我今說之。是善男子、善女人捨身受身,常于剎帝利、婆羅門、毗舍、首陀上族中生,福德圓滿人相具足,得宿命智獲善眷屬。至於奴婢、車馬、珍寶、財物,一切受用無不具足。一切眾生為依為主,見者歡喜言皆隨順,諸佛、菩薩、辟支佛、阿羅漢恒常憶念,凡所愿求一切皆得。

「諸苾芻!是人福蘊尚不能喻,何況造像。至於嫉妒憎愛貪瞋癡等,一切煩惱速得解脫,漸漸修行證無上覺。」

爾時,世尊重說偈言:

「我于滅度后,  若男若女等,  用眾寶造像,  妙香水沐浴,  又以適悅華,  志心而供養。  於後生生中,  感得端嚴報,  一切諸眾生,  瞻仰而無足,  獲種種果報,  尊貴及快樂。  以此余善業,  遠離諸煩惱,  癡暗雲翳除,  如月住虛空。  后復承勝力,  往生於天界,  作天之主宰,  百劫受快樂。  于彼壽命盡,  下生為輪王,  色相如天身,  福德而殊勝,  七寶恒隨逐,  有神通自在,  巡遊四洲境,  一切得隨心,  后入于

『我于滅度后, 若男若女等,  用眾寶造像, 妙香水沐浴,  又以適悅華, 志心而供養。  於後生生中, 感得端嚴報,  一切諸眾生, 瞻仰而無足,  獲種種果報, 尊貴及快樂。  以此余善業, 遠離諸煩惱,  癡暗雲翳除, 如月住虛空。  后復承勝力, 往生於天界,  作天之主宰, 百劫受快樂。  于彼壽命盡, 下生為輪王,  色相如天身, 福德而殊勝,  七寶恒隨逐, 有神通自在,  巡遊四洲境, 一切得隨心,  后入于』

【English Translation】 English version Whether one obtains relics or not, whether they are short or long, large or small, even making Buddha images with fragrant mud, one will attain the karmic rewards of creating such images.

『Oh, Bhikshus (Bhikshus, monks)! If there are good men or good women who, with the images they have created, attain a sincere and pure mind, and bathe the images with wonderful fragrant water according to the Dharma, I will now tell you the merits they will obtain. These good men and good women, abandoning this body and receiving another, will often be born into the noble castes of Kshatriyas (Kshatriya, warriors), Brahmins (Brahmin, priests), Vaishyas (Vaishya, merchants), and Shudras (Shudra, laborers), with complete blessings, perfect features, the wisdom of remembering past lives, and good companions. As for servants, carriages, treasures, wealth, and possessions, they will lack nothing in their enjoyment. All beings will rely on them as their masters, those who see them will rejoice, and their words will be obeyed. All Buddhas, Bodhisattvas (Bodhisattva), Pratyekabuddhas (Pratyekabuddha), and Arhats (Arhat) will constantly remember them, and they will obtain everything they desire.

『Oh, Bhikshus! The accumulation of blessings of this person cannot be compared, let alone the merit of creating images. As for all afflictions such as jealousy, hatred, love, greed, anger, and ignorance, they will quickly be liberated from them, gradually cultivate and attain unsurpassed enlightenment.』

At that time, the World Honored One (世尊) spoke again in verse:

『After my extinction, if men or women, Use various treasures to create images, Bathe them with wonderful fragrant water, And offer them with sincere hearts with delightful flowers. In future lives, they will receive the reward of beautiful features, All beings will gaze upon them without tiring, They will obtain various fruits, Honor, nobility, and happiness. With these remaining good deeds, They will be far from all afflictions, The clouds of ignorance and darkness will be dispelled, Like the moon dwelling in the empty sky. Later, relying on superior strength, They will be reborn in the heavens, Becoming the masters of the heavens, Enjoying happiness for hundreds of kalpas. When their lifespan there ends, They will be reborn as Chakravartin kings, Their appearance like that of heavenly beings, Their blessings and virtues surpassing, Seven treasures will always follow them, They will have supernatural powers and freedom, Touring the realms of the four continents, Everything will be as they wish, Later entering into』


聖道,  乃至證涅盤。  又復有眾生,  得遇于佛塔,  中有設利羅,  細與微塵等,  是人心歡喜,  作種種供養,  當獲大福聚,  如前等無異。  如來變化身,  普遍於三界,  是人供養福,  所感諸果報,  乃至得名稱,  亦遍於十方。  身色如真金,  光明恒晃耀,  于天上人間,  受無量快樂。」

爾時,金光童子聞佛廣說微妙法已,及聞往昔因緣果報,乃于眷屬心無戀著,厭離富貴棄捨快樂,于正法中求欲出家。

佛即應時度為沙門,尋便證得阿羅漢果,所將眷屬亦于坐中皆證道果。

佛說是經已,金光童子並諸眷屬及在會眾,歡喜信受,禮佛而退。

【English Translation】 English version: The noble path, leading to the attainment of Nirvana (Nirvana, Sanskrit, meaning liberation). Furthermore, there are beings who encounter a Stupa (Buddhist monument), within which are Śarīra (Śarīra, Sanskrit, meaning relics), as fine as dust particles. This person rejoices in their heart, making various offerings, and shall obtain a great accumulation of merit, just as mentioned before, without any difference. The transformation body of the Tathagata (Tathāgata, Sanskrit, meaning 'one who has thus come' or 'one who has thus gone'), pervades the three realms (desire realm, form realm, formless realm), the merit from this person's offerings to the Tathagata, and the various karmic retributions they experience, even the fame they gain, will spread throughout the ten directions. Their body's color will be like true gold, their light constantly shining, and they will experience immeasurable happiness in the heavens and among humans.」 At that time, the Golden Light Youth, having heard the Buddha extensively explain the subtle Dharma, and having heard of past causes and conditions and their karmic results, then had no attachment to his family, detested and distanced himself from wealth and honor, and sought to renounce the household life within the true Dharma. The Buddha immediately granted his request, ordaining him as a Śrāmaṇa (Śrāmaṇa, Sanskrit, meaning wandering ascetic), and soon after he attained the fruit of an Arhat (Arhat, Sanskrit, meaning 'one who is worthy' or 'perfected one'), and the family members he brought also attained the fruit of the path while seated there. After the Buddha finished speaking this Sutra, the Golden Light Youth, along with his family members and the assembly present, joyfully accepted it with faith, bowed to the Buddha, and withdrew.
