聞如是:
一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。
時阿難持缽行乞食。食已,阿難隨水邊而行,見一女人在水邊擔水而去,阿難從女丐水,女即與水;女便隨阿難,視阿難所止處。女歸告其母,母名摩鄧,女於家委地臥而啼。母問女:「何為悲啼?」女言:「母欲嫁我者,莫與他人,我於水邊見一沙門從我丐水,我問何字?名阿難。我得阿難乃嫁,母不得者,我不嫁也。」
母出行問阿難,阿難者承事佛。母已知,還告女言:「阿難事佛道,不肯為汝作夫。」女啼,不飲食言:「母能知蠱道。」母出,請阿難歸飯,女大喜。
母語阿難:「我女欲為卿作妻。」阿難言:「我持戒,不畜妻。」復言:「我女不得卿為夫者,便自殺。」阿難言:「我師佛,不得與女人共交通。」
母入語女:「阿難不肯為汝作夫,言其有經道者不得畜婦。」女對母啼言:「母道所在。」母言:「天下道,無有能過佛道及阿羅漢道。」摩鄧女復言:「但為我閉門戶,無令得出,暮自當為我作夫。」母閉門以蠱道縛阿難。

母親出門打聽阿難,得知阿難是服侍佛陀的人。母親知道后,回來告訴女兒說:『阿難修習佛道,不會娶你做妻子的。』女兒哭泣,不吃不喝地說:『母親一定懂得蠱術。』母親出門,邀請阿難回家吃飯,女兒非常高興。
母親對阿難說:『我的女兒想嫁給你做妻子。』阿難說:『我持守戒律,不娶妻。』母親又說:『我的女兒如果不能嫁給你做丈夫,就會自殺。』阿難說:『我的老師是佛陀,我不能與女人發生性關係。』
母親進屋告訴女兒:『阿難不肯娶你做妻子,他說修習經道的人不能娶妻。』女兒對著母親哭泣說:『母親的道術在哪裡?』母親說:『天下的道術,沒有能超過佛道以及阿羅漢(Arhat,斷盡煩惱,證得解脫的聖者)道的。』摩鄧女又說:『只要為我關閉門戶,不要讓他出去,晚上自然會成為我的丈夫。』母親關閉門戶,用蠱術束縛阿難。

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of Matangi Woman Spoken by the Buddha
Translated by An Shih-kao, a Tripitaka Master from An息 Kingdom of the Later Han Dynasty
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove of the Anathapindika-arama (祇樹給孤獨園) in Shravasti (舍衛國).
At that time, Ananda (阿難, one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha, known for his excellent memory) was carrying his bowl to beg for food. After eating, Ananda walked along the water's edge and saw a woman drawing water. Ananda asked the woman for water, and she gave it to him. The woman then followed Ananda, observing where he stopped. The woman returned home and told her mother, whose name was Matangi (摩鄧). The woman lay on the ground at home and wept. Her mother asked her, 'Why are you weeping so sadly?' The woman said, 'Mother, if you wish to marry me off, do not give me to another. I saw a Sramana (沙門, a Buddhist monastic) by the water's edge who asked me for water. I asked him his name, and he said it was Ananda. I will only marry Ananda; if you cannot get him for me, I will not marry.'
The mother went out to inquire about Ananda, and learned that Ananda served the Buddha. Knowing this, the mother returned and told her daughter, 'Ananda practices the Buddha's path; he will not take you as his wife.' The daughter wept, refusing to eat or drink, and said, 'My mother must know the art of蠱 (gu, a kind of black magic).' The mother went out and invited Ananda to her home for a meal, which greatly pleased the daughter.
The mother said to Ananda, 'My daughter wishes to take you as her husband.' Ananda said, 'I observe the precepts and do not keep a wife.' The mother then said, 'If my daughter cannot have you as her husband, she will kill herself.' Ananda said, 'My teacher is the Buddha; I cannot have sexual relations with a woman.'
The mother went inside and told her daughter, 'Ananda will not take you as his wife; he says that those who practice the scriptures cannot keep a wife.' The daughter wept to her mother and said, 'Where is my mother's magic?' The mother said, 'In all the world, there is no magic that can surpass the Buddha's path or the path of an Arhat (阿羅漢, a perfected being who has attained liberation).' Matangi then said, 'Just close the doors for me, do not let him out, and by evening he will naturally become my husband.' The mother closed the doors and bound Ananda with the magic of 蠱.

為女布席臥處,女大喜自莊飾,阿難不肯前就臥處,母令中庭地出火,前牽阿難衣語阿難言:「汝不為我女作夫,我擲汝火中。」
阿難自鄙為佛作沙門,今日反在是中不能得出。佛即持神,心知阿難。阿難還至佛所,白言:「我昨日行丐食,於水邊見一女人,我從丐水,我還到佛所,明日有一女人名摩鄧,請我,欲得歸飯我,出便牽我,欲持女與我作妻。我言:『我持佛戒不得畜妻。』」
女見阿難得脫去,於家啼哭,母言:「其有事佛者,我道不能勝,我本不語汝耶!」女啼不止,續念阿難。
女明日自行求索阿難,復見阿難行丐食,隨阿難背後,視阿難足、視阿難面;阿難慚而避之,女復隨不止。阿難還歸佛所,女守門,阿難不出,女啼而去。
阿難前白佛:「摩鄧女今日復隨我。」佛使追呼摩鄧女見之。佛問:「汝追逐阿難,何等索?」女言:「我聞阿難無婦,我又無夫,我欲為阿難作婦也。」佛告女言:「阿難沙門無發,汝有發,汝寧能剃汝頭髮不?我使阿難為汝作夫。」
女言:「我能剃頭髮。」佛言:「歸報汝母,剃頭髮來。」
女歸到母所言:「母不能為我致阿難,佛言:『剃汝頭發來,我使阿難為汝作夫。』」母言:「子我生汝,護汝頭髮,汝何為欲為沙門

【English Translation】 English version A woman prepared a bed for Ananda, wanting him to rest there. The woman was very happy and adorned herself elaborately. Ananda refused to go forward to the bed to rest. The woman's mother then set fire in the courtyard and, grabbing Ananda's robe, said to Ananda, 'If you do not become my daughter's husband, I will throw you into the fire.' Ananda reproached himself, being a Shramana disciple of the Buddha, yet today he had fallen into this situation and could not escape. The Buddha, with his divine power, knew Ananda's plight in his heart. Ananda returned to the Buddha and reported, 'Yesterday I went to beg for food and saw a woman by the water. I asked her for water. After I returned to the Buddha, today a woman named Matanggi (Matanggi, a woman's name) invited me to her house for a meal. As soon as I went out, she grabbed me, wanting to give her daughter to me as a wife. I said, "I uphold the Buddha's precepts and cannot take a wife."' When the woman saw Ananda escape, she wept at home. Her mother said, 'Dealing with those who believe in the Buddha, I told you we cannot win, didn't I tell you that long ago!' The woman cried incessantly, continuing to think of Ananda. The next day, the woman personally went to seek Ananda and again saw Ananda begging for food. She followed behind Ananda, looking at Ananda's feet, looking at Ananda's face. Ananda felt ashamed and avoided her, but the woman still followed relentlessly. Ananda returned to the Buddha, and the woman guarded the door. Ananda did not come out, and the woman left crying. Ananda went forward and reported to the Buddha, 'The woman Matanggi (Matanggi) is following me again today.' The Buddha sent someone to call back the woman Matanggi (Matanggi) and summoned her. The Buddha asked, 'What do you want by chasing after Ananda?' The woman said, 'I heard that Ananda has no wife, and I have no husband. I want to be Ananda's wife.' The Buddha told the woman, 'Ananda is a Shramana and has no hair, but you have hair. Can you shave your hair? I can then make Ananda your husband.' The woman said, 'I can shave my hair.' The Buddha said, 'Go back and report to your mother, and come back after shaving your hair.' The woman returned to her mother and said, 'Mother cannot get Ananda for me. The Buddha said, "Come back after shaving your hair, and I can make Ananda your husband."』 The mother said, 'Daughter, I gave birth to you and protected your hair. Why do you want to become a Shramana
作婦?國中有大豪富家,我自能嫁汝與之。」女言:「我生死當為阿難作婦。」母言:「汝何為辱我種?」女言:「母愛我者,當隨我心所喜。」母啼泣下刀剃女頭髮。
女還到佛所言:「我已剃頭髮。」佛言:「汝愛阿難何等?」女言:「我愛阿難眼、愛阿難鼻、愛阿難口、愛阿難耳、愛阿難聲、愛阿難行步。」佛言:「眼中但有淚、鼻中但有洟、口中但有唾、耳中但有垢、身中但有屎尿臭處不凈。其有夫妻者,便有惡露,惡露中便有子,已有子便有死亡,已有死亡便有哭泣,於是身有何益?」女即自思念身中惡露,便自正心,即得阿羅漢道。
佛知已得阿羅漢道,即告女言:「汝起至阿難所。」女即慚而低頭,長跪于佛前言:「實愚癡故逐阿難耳。今我心已開,如冥中有燈火;如人乘船船壞依岸;如盲人得扶;如老人持杖行。今佛與我道,令我心開如是。」
諸比丘俱問佛:「是女人母作蠱道,何因緣是女得阿羅漢道?」
佛告諸比丘:「汝欲聞知是女不?」
諸比丘言:「我曹當受教。」
佛言:「是摩鄧女,先世時五百世為阿難作婦,五百世中常相敬相重相貪相愛,同於我經戒中得道,於今夫妻相見如兄弟,如是佛道何用不為?」
佛說是經,諸比丘聞皆歡喜。
【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本: 母親問:『你打算做什麼?我們國家有許多富豪之家,我自然能把你嫁給他們。』女兒說:『我生生世世都要做阿難(Ānanda,佛陀的十大弟子之一,以記憶力強著稱)的妻子。』母親說:『你為什麼要羞辱我的家族?』女兒說:『母親如果愛我,就應該順從我喜歡的心意。』母親哭泣著,用刀剃掉了女兒的頭髮。

佛陀知道她已經證得阿羅漢(Arhat)的境界,就告訴她說:『你起身到阿難(Ānanda)那裡去吧。』女兒慚愧地低下頭,長跪在佛陀面前說:『實在是因為愚癡才追逐阿難(Ānanda)啊。現在我的心已經開悟,就像黑暗中有燈火;像人乘船,船壞了依靠岸邊;像盲人得到了攙扶;像老人拄著枴杖行走。現在佛陀給了我正道,讓我的心開悟如此。』
眾比丘一起問佛陀:『這個女人的母親使用了蠱術,是什麼因緣讓這個女人證得了阿羅漢(Arhat)的境界?』
佛陀告訴眾比丘:『你們想知道這個女人的事情嗎?』
眾比丘說:『我們願意接受教誨。』
佛陀說:『這個摩鄧女(Mātangī,一個種族的名字),前世五百世都做阿難(Ānanda)的妻子,五百世中常常互相尊敬、互相看重、互相貪戀、互相愛慕,一同在我的經戒中得道,如今夫妻相見如同兄弟,這樣的佛道有什麼不能成就的呢?』
佛陀說完這部經,眾比丘聽了都非常歡喜。
【English Translation】 English version: The mother asked: 'What do you intend to do? There are many wealthy families in our country, and I can naturally marry you to one of them.' The daughter said: 'In life after life, I will be Ānanda's (one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha, known for his excellent memory) wife.' The mother said: 'Why do you want to disgrace my family?' The daughter said: 'If mother loves me, she should follow what my heart desires.' The mother wept and shaved off her daughter's hair with a knife.
The daughter returned to the Buddha and said: 'I have already shaved my head.' The Buddha asked: 'What do you love about Ānanda?' The daughter said: 'I love Ānanda's eyes, I love Ānanda's nose, I love Ānanda's mouth, I love Ānanda's ears, I love Ānanda's voice, I love Ānanda's way of walking.' The Buddha said: 'In the eyes, there are only tears; in the nose, there is only mucus; in the mouth, there is only saliva; in the ears, there is only dirt; in the body, there is only excrement and urine, foul and unclean. When there is a husband and wife, there will be foul discharge; in the foul discharge, there will be children; when there are children, there will be death; when there is death, there will be weeping. What benefit is there in such a body?' The daughter immediately contemplated the foulness within her body, and she straightened her mind and immediately attained the state of an Arhat (the perfected one who has attained Nirvana).
Knowing that she had attained the state of an Arhat, the Buddha told her: 'Arise and go to Ānanda.' The daughter lowered her head in shame and knelt before the Buddha, saying: 'It was truly out of ignorance that I pursued Ānanda. Now my mind is enlightened, like a lamp in the darkness; like a person on a boat who relies on the shore when the boat breaks; like a blind person who receives support; like an old person walking with a cane. Now the Buddha has given me the path, causing my mind to be enlightened in this way.'
The Bhikkhus (monks) together asked the Buddha: 'The mother of this woman used witchcraft. What is the cause and condition that allowed this woman to attain the state of an Arhat?'
The Buddha told the Bhikkhus: 'Do you want to know about this woman?'
The Bhikkhus said: 'We are willing to receive your teachings.'
The Buddha said: 'This Mātangī (name of a caste) woman, in her previous lives, was Ānanda's wife for five hundred lifetimes. In those five hundred lifetimes, they often respected each other, valued each other, were greedy for each other, and loved each other. Together, they attained the path in my teachings and precepts. Now, husband and wife see each other as brothers. What Buddhist path cannot be achieved in this way?'
After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, all the Bhikkhus were delighted to hear it.
