佛在舍衛祇阿難邠坻阿藍。時阿難持缽行乞食,以隨水行,見一女人在水邊持水去,阿難從乞水,女則與之。女便隨阿難,至居所處。
女歸告其母,母名摩登。女於家委臥而啼,母問女何為啼?女言:「母欲嫁我者,莫與他人。我於水邊,見一沙門,從我乞水,我隨問,名為阿難;我得阿難者乃嫁,不得阿難不嫁。」
母即行問阿難,阿難者承事佛。母即知之,還告女言:「阿難事佛道,不肯為汝作夫。」女即啼不飯食:「母知蠱道,何不導之?」
母出請阿難歸飯,女大喜。母語阿難:「我女欲為卿作妻。」阿難言:「我持佛戒,不得畜妻。」母復言:「我女不得卿作夫者,便自殺。」阿難言:「我師事佛,不得與女人交通。」
母即入,語女言:「阿難不肯為汝作夫,其有經道者,不得畜婦。」女對母啼言:「母道所在。」母言:「天下道,無能過佛道及阿羅漢。」女復言:「但為我閉門戶,無令出,暮自為我作夫。」母即閉門,以蠱道縛阿難。
至日晡時,母為布席臥處,女大喜,便莊飾,阿

佛陀在舍衛城(Śrāvastī)的祇樹給孤獨園(Jetavana-anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma)。當時,阿難(Ānanda,佛陀十大弟子之一,以多聞第一著稱)持缽乞食,沿著水邊行走,看見一個女子在水邊打水,阿難向她乞水,女子便給了他。女子隨後跟隨阿難,到了他居住的地方。
女子回家告訴她的母親,母親名叫摩登伽(Mātaṅgī)。女子在家中躺臥啼哭,母親問她為何啼哭?女子說:『母親如果想嫁我,就不要把我嫁給別人。我在水邊,看見一位沙門(śrāmaṇa,出家修道者),向我乞水,我打聽他的名字,叫做阿難;我能嫁給阿難才嫁,不能嫁給阿難就不嫁。』
母親就去打聽阿難,得知阿難是服侍佛陀的人。母親知道了這件事,回來告訴女兒說:『阿難修習佛道,不會願意做你的丈夫。』女子就啼哭不吃飯:『母親懂得蠱術,為什麼不用蠱術迷惑他呢?』
母親出門邀請阿難回家吃飯,女子非常高興。母親對阿難說:『我的女兒想做你的妻子。』阿難說:『我遵守佛陀的戒律,不能娶妻。』母親又說:『我的女兒如果不能嫁給你做丈夫,就會自殺。』阿難說:『我以佛陀為師,不能與女人發生關係。』
母親就進屋,告訴女兒說:『阿難不肯做你的丈夫,凡是修行佛道的人,都不能娶妻。』女子對著母親啼哭說:『母親的蠱術在哪裡?』母親說:『天下的道術,沒有能超過佛道和阿羅漢(arhat,斷盡煩惱,證得解脫的聖者)的。』女子又說:『只要為我關閉門戶,不要讓他出去,晚上自然會成為我的丈夫。』母親就關閉門戶,用蠱術束縛阿難。
到了傍晚時分,母親為他們佈置床鋪,女子非常高興,便梳妝打扮,
【English Translation】 English version: The Sūtra Spoken by the Buddha on the Six Aspects of Dismembering the Form of a Mātaṅga Woman

The Buddha was in the Jetavana-anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma in Śrāvastī. At that time, Ānanda, carrying his alms bowl, was walking along the water's edge when he saw a woman drawing water. Ānanda asked her for water, and she gave it to him. The woman then followed Ānanda to his dwelling place.
The woman returned home and told her mother, whose name was Mātaṅgī. The woman lay down at home, weeping. Her mother asked her why she was crying. The woman said, 'If you want to marry me off, Mother, do not give me to anyone else. By the water, I saw a śrāmaṇa who asked me for water. I inquired about his name, and it is Ānanda. I will only marry if I can marry Ānanda; if I cannot marry Ānanda, I will not marry.'
The mother then went to inquire about Ānanda, and learned that Ānanda served the Buddha. Knowing this, the mother returned and told her daughter, 'Ānanda cultivates the Buddha's path and will not agree to be your husband.' The woman then wept and refused to eat, saying, 'Mother, you know the arts of蠱 (gǔ, a type of black magic), why not use them to bewitch him?'
The mother went out and invited Ānanda home for a meal, which greatly pleased the woman. The mother said to Ānanda, 'My daughter wishes to be your wife.' Ānanda said, 'I uphold the Buddha's precepts and cannot have a wife.' The mother then said, 'If my daughter cannot have you as her husband, she will kill herself.' Ānanda said, 'I take the Buddha as my teacher and cannot have relations with a woman.'
The mother then went inside and told her daughter, 'Ānanda is unwilling to be your husband; those who cultivate the Buddha's path cannot have wives.' The woman wept to her mother, saying, 'Where is your magic?' The mother said, 'In all the world, no magic can surpass the Buddha's path and that of an arhat.' The woman then said, 'Just close the doors for me, do not let him out, and by night he will naturally become my husband.' The mother then closed the doors and bound Ānanda with magic.
As evening approached, the mother prepared a bed for them. The woman was overjoyed and began to adorn herself,
難不肯就臥處,母便然火,前牽阿難衣,語阿難言:「汝不為我女作夫者,我便擲汝火中。」
阿難自鄙作沙門,今日反在中,不能得出,即叉手呼佛。佛即知之,使神脫阿難。阿難至佛所言:「昨日行乞食,於水邊見一女人,我從乞水。明日有人名摩登,請我歸飯,我出便牽我,欲持女與我為婦;我持佛戒,不得畜妻。」
女見阿難得脫去,於家啼哭,母言:「其有事佛者,我道不能勝,我本不語汝耶!」女啼不止,續念阿難。
女明日自行來索阿難,復見阿難行乞食,隨阿難背後,視阿難足,視阿難面。阿難羞慚,低頭不視而避之,女復隨不止。阿難還歸佛所,女復守門,阿難不出,女啼去歸。
阿難前白佛言:「摩登女今日復隨,明日復來。」佛即呼女見之。佛言:「汝追阿難,何等索?」女言:「我聞阿難無婦,我亦無夫,我欲為阿難作妻。」佛言:「阿難沙門無發,汝寧剃頭髮?我使阿難為汝作夫。」女言:「敢剃頭髮。」佛言:「汝歸報母剃頭來。」
女歸到母所,言:「母不能致阿難,我自行訊息問佛。佛言:『剃頭髮來,我使阿難為汝作夫。』」母言:「我生護汝頭髮,汝何為與沙門作婦?國中有大富豪,我自能嫁汝與之。」女言:「我死生當與阿難作婦。」母言:

【English Translation】 English version: The woman forced Ananda (Buddha's attendant) to lie down with her, but Ananda refused. The woman's mother then lit a fire, grabbed Ananda's clothes, and said to Ananda, 'If you don't become my daughter's husband, I will throw you into the fire.' Ananda, considering himself a Shramana (Buddhist monastic) now found himself in this situation, unable to escape, so he clasped his hands and called upon the Buddha. The Buddha immediately knew of this and used his divine power to rescue Ananda. Ananda went to the Buddha and said, 'Yesterday I went begging for food and saw a woman by the water, and I asked her for water. Today, someone named Matanggi (Matanggi) invited me to her house for a meal. As soon as I went out, she grabbed me, wanting to give her daughter to me as a wife; I uphold the Buddha's precepts and cannot take a wife.' When the woman saw Ananda escape, she cried at home. Her mother said, 'Those who believe in the Buddha, I said I cannot overcome them, I told you that before!' The woman cried incessantly, constantly thinking of Ananda. The next day, the woman came to look for Ananda herself, and again saw Ananda begging for food, so she followed behind Ananda, looking at Ananda's feet, looking at Ananda's face. Ananda felt ashamed, lowered his head and did not look at her, avoiding her, but the woman still followed him relentlessly. Ananda returned to the Buddha, and the woman guarded the door, Ananda did not come out, and the woman cried and went home. Ananda went forward and reported to the Buddha, 'The Matanggi woman followed me again today, and will come again tomorrow.' The Buddha immediately called for the woman to see him. The Buddha asked, 'What do you want from following Ananda?' The woman said, 'I heard that Ananda has no wife, and I have no husband, I want to be Ananda's wife.' The Buddha said, 'Ananda is a Shramana and has no hair, are you willing to shave your head? I will have Ananda take you as his wife.' The woman said, 'I am willing to shave my head.' The Buddha said, 'Go back and tell your mother to shave your head and come back.' The woman returned to her mother and said, 'Mother cannot get Ananda for me, I went to inquire about the Buddha's message myself. The Buddha said, "Come back with your head shaved, and I will have Ananda take you as his wife." ' The mother said, 'I have protected your hair since you were little, why do you want to be a Shramana's wife? There are many wealthy people in the country, I can naturally marry you to them.' The woman said, 'I will be Ananda's wife whether I live or die.' The mother said:
「汝何為辱汝種?」女言:「母愛我者,當隨我心所喜。」母即垂淚下刀,剃女頭髮。
女還到佛所言:「我已剃頭髮。」佛言:「汝愛阿難何等?」女言:「我愛阿難眼、愛阿難鼻、愛阿難口、愛阿難聲、愛阿難行步。」
佛言:「眼中有淚,鼻中有涕,口中有唾,耳中有垢,身中有屎尿皆臭處。其作夫妻者,便有惡處中便生子,有子便有死亡,死亡有哭㴃,此于身有何等益?」
女即自思惟,惡露形中,所有正心,則得阿羅漢道,以得阿羅漢。
佛語女:「起至阿難所。」女慚愧低頭,長跪于佛前言:「實愚癡故逐阿難,今我心已開,如冥中有燈火;如乘船船壞得岸;如盲人得扶;老人得持杖行,今佛與我道,我心中開如是。」
諸沙門俱問佛言:「是女母為蠱道,何緣得阿羅漢道?」
佛言:「諸沙門欲聞知是女不?」
諸沙門言:「我曹當受教。」
佛言:「是摩登女,先時已五百世,為阿難作婦。五百世中,相敬重,相貪愛,於今同於經戒道中得道,於今夫妻相見如兄弟狀,是經令諸沙門知女意如是。」
諸沙門則起前,為佛作禮。

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本 『你為何要羞辱你的種族?』 女子說:『母親愛我,就應當順從我心中所喜悅的。』 母親隨即流著眼淚,拿起刀剃了女兒的頭髮。
女子回到佛陀那裡說:『我已經剃了頭髮。』 佛陀說:『你愛阿難(Ananda,佛陀的十大弟子之一)什麼?』 女子說:『我愛阿難的眼睛、愛阿難的鼻子、愛阿難的嘴巴、愛阿難的聲音、愛阿難的行走姿態。』
佛陀說:『眼睛裡有眼淚,鼻子中有鼻涕,嘴巴里有唾沫,耳朵里有污垢,身體里有屎尿,都是臭穢之處。如果結為夫妻,便在這些污穢之處產生孩子,有了孩子便有死亡,死亡便有哭泣哀號,這對自身有什麼益處呢?』
女子隨即自己思索,在這充滿污穢的身體中,只要有正直的心,就能證得阿羅漢(Arhat,斷盡煩惱,證得解脫的聖者)的果位,因此證得了阿羅漢果。
佛陀對女子說:『起來,到阿難那裡去。』 女子慚愧地低下頭,長跪在佛陀面前說:『實在是因為愚癡才追逐阿難,現在我的心已經開悟,如同黑暗中有燈火;如同乘坐的船壞了而到達了岸邊;如同盲人得到了攙扶;老人得到了枴杖行走,現在佛陀給了我正道,我心中開悟就是這樣。』
眾沙門(Sramana,佛教出家修行者)一起問佛陀說:『這位女子的母親使用了蠱術嗎?她為何能證得阿羅漢道?』
佛陀說:『各位沙門想知道這位女子的事情嗎?』
眾沙門說:『我們應當接受教誨。』
佛陀說:『這位摩登女(Matangi,印度種姓制度中的一種低種姓)在過去五百世中,一直是阿難的妻子。五百世中,他們互相尊敬,互相貪愛,如今一同在經戒道中得道,如今夫妻相見如同兄弟一般,這部經讓各位沙門知道女子的心意就是這樣。』
眾沙門隨即起身,走到佛陀面前,向佛陀行禮。
佛說摩登女解形中六事經
【English Translation】 English version 『Why do you disgrace your lineage?』 The woman said, 『If my mother loves me, she should follow what my heart desires.』 Her mother then shed tears, took a knife, and shaved her daughter's hair.
The woman returned to the Buddha and said, 『I have already shaved my hair.』 The Buddha said, 『What do you love about Ananda (one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha)?』 The woman said, 『I love Ananda's eyes, I love Ananda's nose, I love Ananda's mouth, I love Ananda's voice, I love Ananda's manner of walking.』
The Buddha said, 『In the eyes there are tears, in the nose there is mucus, in the mouth there is saliva, in the ears there is dirt, in the body there is excrement and urine, all of which are foul places. If they become husband and wife, then children are born from these foul places, and with children comes death, and with death comes weeping and wailing. What benefit is there in this for oneself?』
The woman then reflected on herself, that within this body full of filth, if one has a righteous mind, one can attain the path of an Arhat (a perfected person who has attained nirvana), and thus she attained Arhatship.
The Buddha said to the woman, 『Rise and go to Ananda.』 The woman lowered her head in shame, knelt before the Buddha, and said, 『It was truly out of ignorance that I pursued Ananda. Now my mind is enlightened, like a lamp in the darkness; like reaching the shore when the boat is wrecked; like a blind person being supported; like an old person having a staff to walk with. Now the Buddha has given me the path, and my mind is enlightened in this way.』
The Sramanas (wandering ascetics or monks) all asked the Buddha, 『Did this woman's mother use witchcraft? How could she attain the path of an Arhat?』
The Buddha said, 『Do you Sramanas wish to know about this woman?』
The Sramanas said, 『We should receive your teaching.』
The Buddha said, 『This Matangi (a woman from a low caste) has been Ananda's wife for five hundred lifetimes in the past. In those five hundred lifetimes, they respected each other and were mutually attached. Now they have both attained the path in the discipline of the scriptures. Now husband and wife see each other as siblings. This sutra lets you Sramanas know the woman's intention is like this.』
The Sramanas then rose, went before the Buddha, and paid homage to the Buddha.
