聞如是:

一時佛游于拘留國,在分儒達樹園,與千羅漢俱,菩薩有五百人,及諸天、龍、鬼神。

爾時拘留國中有婆羅門,名摩訶蜜,慳貪,不信佛法。大豪富,珍奇、珠寶、牛馬、田宅甚眾多;智慧無雙,為是國中作師,常有五百弟子,復為國王、大臣所敬遇。

是婆羅門有七女,大端正無比,黠慧言語;從頭至足皆著金銀、白珠、瓔珞,隨時被服;常與五百女人俱,喜自貢高,恃怙端正,憍慢眾人;倚于富貴謂呼有常;每與國中人民共說義理,常得其勝。

爾時有迦羅越,名曰分儒達,聞此女大好,便至婆羅門所,謂言:「卿家中自呼是女端正,雖爾,當遍將至國中示人。若有人呵此女者,卿當雇我五百兩金;若不呵者,我當雇卿五百兩金。」

如是募九十日遍至國中,無有道此女丑者。爾時婆羅門即得五百兩金。分儒達告婆羅門:「今佛近在祇樹園。佛知當來、過去、今現在事。又復至誠,終不妄言。當將往示佛。」

婆羅門言:「大善!」即與眷屬五百婆羅門,國中復有五百女人俱,相隨至佛所。

佛時為無數千人說法

當時有一位迦羅越(a householder),名叫分儒達(Phanita),聽說這些女子非常美麗,便到婆羅門那裡,對他說:『你家自稱女兒們美麗,即使如此,也應當將她們帶到全國各地給人觀看。如果有人說你的女兒醜陋,你應當雇我五百兩金子;如果沒有人說她們醜陋,我應當雇你五百兩金子。』

就這樣,他用了九十天的時間走遍全國,沒有人說這些女子醜陋。當時,婆羅門就得到了五百兩金子。分儒達告訴婆羅門:『現在佛陀就在祇樹園(Jeta Grove)附近。佛陀知道過去、現在、未來的事情。而且至誠懇切,終不說謊。應當帶你的女兒們去給佛陀看。』

婆羅門說:『太好了!』 於是就帶著眷屬五百婆羅門,國內又有五百女人一起,跟隨他到佛陀那裡。

當時佛陀正在為無數千人說法。

【English Translation】 English version No. 556 The Sutra of Seven Daughters Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by Layman Zhi Qian of the Yuezhi Kingdom of Wu

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was traveling in the country of Koliya, residing in the garden of Phanita, together with a thousand Arhats, five hundred Bodhisattvas, and various devas, nagas, and spirits.

At that time, in the country of Koliya, there was a Brahmin named Mahamitra, who was miserly and greedy, and did not believe in the Buddha's teachings. He was extremely wealthy, possessing countless treasures, jewels, cattle, horses, fields, and houses; he was unparalleled in wisdom, serving as a teacher in the country, and always had five hundred disciples. He was also respected and treated well by the king and ministers.

This Brahmin had seven daughters, all of whom were extremely beautiful and intelligent; from head to toe, they wore gold, silver, white pearls, and necklaces, changing their clothes at any time; they were often accompanied by five hundred women, enjoyed showing off, relied on their beauty, and were arrogant towards others; they depended on their wealth and considered everything to be their due; every time they debated principles with the people of the country, they always emerged victorious.

At that time, there was a householder named Phanita, who heard that these women were very beautiful, so he went to the Brahmin and said to him: 'Your family claims that your daughters are beautiful, even so, you should take them all over the country for people to see. If anyone says your daughters are ugly, you should hire me for five hundred taels of gold; if no one says they are ugly, I should hire you for five hundred taels of gold.'

In this way, he spent ninety days traveling all over the country, and no one said that these women were ugly. At that time, the Brahmin received five hundred taels of gold. Phanita told the Brahmin: 'Now the Buddha is near the Jeta Grove. The Buddha knows the past, present, and future. Moreover, he is sincere and never lies. You should take your daughters to show the Buddha.'

The Brahmin said: 'Excellent!' Then he took his family of five hundred Brahmins, and five hundred women from the country, and followed him to the Buddha.

At that time, the Buddha was expounding the Dharma to countless thousands of people.


。各各前為佛作禮,卻坐一面。婆羅門前白佛言:「瞿曇常游諸國,寧見有好人端正如是女者不?」

佛便逆呵之:「此女不好,皆丑,無有一好處。」

婆羅門問佛:「是女一國中人無有道此女丑。今瞿曇何以獨道此女丑?」婆羅門問佛言:「世間人以何為好?」

佛言:「世間人眼不貪色,耳不聽受惡聲,是則為好;鼻不嗅香,口不嘗味,是則為好;身不貪細滑,意不念惡,是則為好;手不盜取人財物,口不說人惡,是則為好;不貢高、綺語,知生所從來,死有所趣,是則為好;信佈施后當得其福,是則為好;信佛,信法,信比丘僧,是則為好。」

佛告婆羅門:「顏色好,不為好;身體好,不為好;衣服好,不為好;二言、綺語,不為好;心端意正此乃為好。」

分儒達即自還得五百兩金。

佛告婆羅門:「昔者有城,名波羅奈,從地底去,佛、諸當來佛皆於是上坐。爾時有國王,名機惟尼,作優婆塞,大明經,為佛作精舍。王有女,悉為優婆夷,明經智慧,端正無雙,身上皆著金銀、琥珀、珠寶,被服甚好。第一女字羞耽,第二女字須耽摩,第三女字比丘尼,第四女字比丘羅輜,第五女字沙門尼,第六女字沙門密,第七女字僧大薩耽,常以佛正法齋戒、佈施訖竟,七女

佛陀告訴婆羅門:『容貌好,不是好;身體好,不是好;衣服好,不是好;兩舌、花言巧語,不是好;心端正意念純正,這才是好。』

【English Translation】 English version: They each stepped forward to pay homage to the Buddha, then sat to one side. The Brahmin stepped forward and said to the Buddha, 'Gautama (Gautama, Buddha's family name) often travels to various countries, has he not seen a woman as beautiful and dignified as this one?'

The Buddha then rebuked him in return, 'This woman is not good, they are all ugly, there is not a single good thing about her.'

The Brahmin asked the Buddha, 'In this woman's country, no one says she is ugly. Why does Gautama alone say this woman is ugly?' The Brahmin asked the Buddha, 'What do people in the world consider good?'

The Buddha said, 'For people in the world, if the eyes are not greedy for beauty, the ears do not listen to evil sounds, that is good; if the nose does not crave fragrance, the mouth does not crave flavors, that is good; if the body does not crave fine and smooth sensations, the mind does not harbor evil thoughts, that is good; if the hands do not steal other people's property, the mouth does not speak ill of others, that is good; if one is not arrogant, does not engage in frivolous speech, knows where one comes from and where one goes after death, that is good; if one believes that giving alms will bring blessings, that is good; if one believes in the Buddha, believes in the Dharma (Dharma, Buddhist teachings), believes in the Bhikshu Sangha (Bhikshu Sangha, Buddhist monastic community), that is good.'

The Buddha told the Brahmin, 'Good looks are not good; a good body is not good; good clothes are not good; duplicity and frivolous speech are not good; a righteous mind and correct thoughts, that is what is good.'

Fen Ru Da (a name) immediately obtained five hundred taels of gold for himself.

The Buddha told the Brahmin, 'In the past there was a city called Varanasi (Varanasi, name of an ancient Indian city), which emerged from the bottom of the earth, and all the Buddhas of the past and future will sit there. At that time there was a king named Ji Weini (name of a king), who, as an Upasaka (Upasaka, a male lay Buddhist), was well-versed in the scriptures and built a monastery for the Buddha. The king had daughters, all of whom were Upasikas (Upasika, a female lay Buddhist), well-versed in scriptural wisdom, dignified and beautiful beyond compare, all wearing gold, silver, amber, and jewels, and dressed very beautifully. The eldest daughter was named Xiu Dan (a name), the second daughter was named Xu Danmo (a name), the third daughter was named Bhikkhuni (Bhikkhuni, a Buddhist nun), the fourth daughter was named Bhikkhu Luozhi (a name), the fifth daughter was named Shramanerika (Shramanerika, a novice nun), the sixth daughter was named Shamen Mi (a name), the seventh daughter was named Sengda Sadan (a name), and these seven daughters always observed the Buddha's righteous Dharma, fasting, and giving alms, these seven daughters'


便相將至父王正殿,白言:『我曹姊弟欲相隨到冢間遊觀。』

「王言:『塳間大可畏,但有死人骨發,形骸狼藉,支散在地;諸悲哀者、啼哭者滿其間;有虎、狼、野獸、鴟梟主啖死人肉血。汝曹姊弟何為冢間?我宮中有園觀、浴池,中有飛鳥、鴛鴦相隨而鳴;中有眾華,五色光目;芝草奇樹,眾果清涼,恣意所食,極可遊觀。汝曹姊弟何為冢間?』

「七女即報言:『大王!眾果、美食何益萬分?我見世間人老時命日趣死,人生無有不死者。我曹非小兒,嘗為餘食所惑!王哀念我姊弟者,當聽我曹姊弟到城外觀死人。』如是至三。

「王言:『大善!聽汝姊弟所為。』

「爾時七女即與五百婇女嚴駕出宮門。七女即解頸下瓔珞散地。國中時有千餘人見之,隨後拾取珠寶。歡喜遂到城外冢間,大臭,處不凈,但聞啼哭聲。諸婇女及人民身體肅然,衣毛為豎。七女直前視諸死人,中有斷頭者,中有斷手足者,中有斷鼻耳者,中有已死者,或有未死者,中有梓棺者,有席中裹者,有繩縛者。家室啼哭,皆欲令解脫。七女左右顧視死人眾多。復有持死人從四面來者,飛鳥、走獸共爭來食之。死人膀脹,膿血流出,數萬億蟲從腹中出,臭處難可當。七女亦不覆鼻,直前繞之一匝,即自相與言:『我

The king said, 'The cemetery is very dreadful, full of dead people's bones and hair, with scattered and broken corpses all over the ground; it is filled with mourners and weeping; and there are tigers, wolves, wild beasts, and owls that feed on the flesh and blood of the dead. What are you sisters doing in the cemetery? In my palace, there are gardens and bathing pools, with birds and mandarin ducks singing together; there are various flowers, with five colors dazzling the eyes; there are auspicious herbs, strange trees, and various cool fruits, which you can eat at will and enjoy. What are you sisters doing in the cemetery?'

The seven princesses replied, 'Great King! What is the use of numerous fruits and delicacies? We see that when people in the world grow old, their lives approach death day by day, and no one can escape death. We are not children, and we are not easily deceived by food! If Your Majesty pities us sisters, you should allow us to go outside the city to see the dead.' They pleaded in this way three times.

The king said, 'Very well! I will grant your wish.'

At that time, the seven princesses, along with five hundred palace women, dressed up grandly and left the palace gate. The seven princesses took off the necklaces from their necks and scattered them on the ground. More than a thousand people in the city saw this and then picked up the jewels. They happily arrived at the cemetery outside the city, which was very smelly, full of unclean things, and filled with the sound of weeping. The palace women and the people felt solemn and their hair stood on end. The seven princesses went straight ahead and looked at the various dead people, some with their heads cut off, some with their hands and feet cut off, some with their noses and ears cut off, some already dead, some not yet dead, some in coffins, some wrapped in mats, some tied with ropes. The families of the dead were weeping, all wanting the dead to be liberated. The seven princesses looked around and saw many dead people. There were also people carrying dead bodies from all directions, and birds and beasts were fighting to eat them. The dead people's bodies were swollen, pus and blood were flowing out, and hundreds of millions of insects were crawling out of their stomachs, making the stench unbearable. The seven princesses did not cover their noses, but walked straight around the cemetery once, and then said to each other, 'We'


曹姊弟身體不久皆當復爾。』

「第一女言:『寧可各作一偈,救死人魂魄耶?』六女皆言:『大善!』

「第一女言:『此人生時好香涂身,著新好衣;行步眾中,細目綺視;於人中作姿,則欲令人觀之。今死在地,日炙、風飄。主作姿則者,今為所在?』

「第二女言:『雀在瓶中,覆蓋其口,不能出飛。今瓶已破,雀飛而去。』

「第三女言:『乘車而行,中道舍車去,車不能自前。主使車行者,今為所在?』

「第四女言:『譬如人乘船而行,眾人共載而渡水,得岸便系船。棄身體去,如棄船去。』

「第五女言:『有城完堅,中多人民,皆生長城中。今城更空,不見人民,為在何所?』

「第六女言:『人死臥地,衣被常好,從頭至足無有缺減。今不能行,亦不能動搖。其人當今為在何所?』

「第七女言:『一身獨居,人出去其舍,舍中空無有守者,今舍日壞敗。』

「爾時第二忉利天王釋提桓因坐即為動搖,聞七女說經,如伸臂頃,即從天上來下,贊七女言:『所說大善!欲愿得何等?所愿者,我能為汝得之。』

「七女俱言:『卿是釋天乎?梵天耶?不見卿來時,自然在我前,使我知之。』

「即報言:『諸女!我是釋提桓因

四女兒說:『譬如人乘船而行,眾人一同乘載渡水,到達岸邊就係好船。拋棄身體離去,就像拋棄船一樣。』

五女兒說:『有一座城池完整堅固,裡面有很多居民,都生長在這座城中。現在城池空空蕩蕩,不見居民,他們都在哪裡呢?』

六女兒說:『人死後躺在地上,衣服被子常常是完好無損的,從頭到腳沒有缺少什麼。現在不能行走,也不能動彈。這個人現在在哪裡呢?』

七女兒說:『身體獨自居住,人離開了房屋,房屋中空無一人守護,現在房屋一天天破敗。』

當時第二忉利天(Trayastrimsa,佛教宇宙觀中位於須彌山頂的天界)的國王釋提桓因(Sakra Devanam Indra,忉利天之主)坐著的地方就開始震動,聽到七個女兒說經,像伸一下手臂的時間,就從天上降落下來,讚歎七個女兒說:『說得太好了!想要得到什麼?想要的東西,我能為你們得到。』

釋提桓因回答說:『各位女子!我是釋提桓因(Sakra Devanam Indra)。』

The eldest daughter said, 『How about we each compose a verse to save the souls of the dead?』 All six daughters said, 『Excellent!』

The eldest daughter said, 『When this person was alive, they liked to apply fragrant substances to their body and wear new, beautiful clothes; walking among people, they would glance sideways with narrow eyes; making poses in the crowd, wanting to attract attention. Now they lie dead on the ground, exposed to the sun and wind. Where is that master of posing now?』

The second daughter said, 『Like a sparrow in a bottle, its mouth covered, unable to fly out. Now the bottle is broken, and the sparrow has flown away.』

The third daughter said, 『Like riding in a carriage, abandoning the carriage halfway, the carriage cannot move forward on its own. Where is the master who made the carriage move now?』

The fourth daughter said, 『For example, people travel by boat, and everyone rides together to cross the water. Upon reaching the shore, they moor the boat. Abandoning the body to leave is like abandoning the boat.』

The fifth daughter said, 『There is a city complete and strong, with many people living inside, all growing up in this city. Now the city is empty, and the people are gone. Where are they?』

The sixth daughter said, 『When a person dies and lies on the ground, their clothes and bedding are usually intact, with nothing missing from head to toe. Now they cannot walk or move. Where is that person now?』

The seventh daughter said, 『The body dwells alone, and when the person leaves the house, the house is empty with no one to guard it. Now the house is decaying day by day.』

At that time, Sakra Devanam Indra (Lord of the Trayastrimsa Heaven), the king of the second Trayastrimsa Heaven (a heaven located on the summit of Mount Sumeru in Buddhist cosmology), began to shake where he was sitting. Hearing the seven daughters reciting the scriptures, in the time it takes to stretch out an arm, he descended from the heavens and praised the seven daughters, saying, 『What you have said is excellent! What do you wish to obtain? Whatever you desire, I can obtain it for you.』

The seven daughters said together, 『Are you Sakra (Sakra Devanam Indra)? Or Brahma (Lord of the Form Realm)? We did not see you arrive, but you naturally appeared before us, let us know who you are.』

Sakra Devanam Indra replied, 『Ladies! I am Sakra Devanam Indra.』


。聞說善言、好語,故來聽之。』

「七女言:『卿屬者欲與我曹愿。卿是第二忉利天上最尊,當爲我等得之。我姊弟請說所愿。』

「第一女言:『我願欲得無根、無枝、無葉之樹,于其中生。是我所愿也。』

「第二女言:『我欲得地上無形之處、無陰陽之端,愿欲于其中生。』

「第三女言:『人于深山中大呼,音響四聞耳,不知所在。我願于其中生。』

「釋提桓因報言:『且止!我不能得是愿。諸女欲得作釋梵、四天王、日月中尊,是則可得。今女所愿,實我所不知。』

「七女答言:『卿是天上獨尊,有威神,何以不能得此愿?卿譬如老牛,不能挽車,亦復不能耕犁,無益於主。』

「釋提桓因報言:『我聞說經,故來聽之。非我所知,即便辭謝。』七女默然無報。

「爾時空中有天言:『今迦葉佛近在惟于陵聚中,何不往問迦葉佛?』七女聞之大歡喜,即與五百婇女、隨來觀者,冢間喪亡、悲哀、啼哭者復有五百人,俱發意往。

「時迦葉佛為無數千人說法,悉各前為迦葉佛作禮,卻坐一面。

「釋提桓因白佛言:『我向者聞國王七女說經,故來聽之。七女便從我索是愿言:「我欲得無根、無枝、無葉之樹、無形之處、無陰陽之端,深

第二位天女說:『我希望生在地上沒有形狀的地方、沒有陰陽起始的地方,希望在那裡出生。』

第三位天女說:『人在深山中大聲呼喊,聲音四處迴響,卻不知道聲音在哪裡。我希望在那樣的狀態中出生。』

釋提桓因(Śakra devānām Indra,帝釋天)回答說:『請停止!我無法滿足這些願望。如果各位天女想要成為釋天(Śakra,帝釋天)、梵天(Brahmā,大梵天)、四大天王(Caturmahārājakāyikas,四大天王)或者日月中的尊者,那還可以做到。但你們現在所說的願望,實在是我所不知道的。』

七位天女回答說:『您是天上最尊貴的天主,擁有威神之力,為什麼不能滿足這些願望呢?您就像一頭老牛,既不能拉車,也不能耕地,對主人沒有任何益處。』

釋提桓因(Śakra devānām Indra,帝釋天)回答說:『我聽說這裡有經可聽,所以前來聽取。如果不是我所知道的,我就告辭了。』七位天女沉默不語。

這時,空中傳來天人的聲音:『現在迦葉佛(Kāśyapa Buddha,過去七佛之一)就在惟于陵聚中,為什麼不去請教迦葉佛呢?』七位天女聽了非常高興,立刻與五百位婇女、以及隨來看熱鬧的人,還有墳墓間因喪事而悲哀啼哭的五百人,一同發心前往。

當時,迦葉佛(Kāśyapa Buddha,過去七佛之一)正在為無數千人說法,所有人都走到迦葉佛面前頂禮,然後退到一旁坐下。

【English Translation】 English version: 'Hearing that there are good words and fine speech here, I have come to listen.'

The seven daughters said, 'Do you wish to fulfill our desires? You are the most honored one in the second Tāvatiṃsa (thirty-three heavens), and you should be able to obtain them for us. We sisters would like to ask you to speak of these wishes.'

The first daughter said, 'I wish to be born in a tree without roots, without branches, and without leaves. This is my wish.'

The second daughter said, 'I wish to be born in a place on earth without form, without the beginning of yin and yang; I wish to be born there.'

The third daughter said, 'When a person shouts loudly in a deep mountain, the sound echoes in all directions, but one does not know where the sound is. I wish to be born in that state.'

Śakra devānām Indra (Lord Śakra) replied, 'Please stop! I cannot fulfill these wishes. If you daughters wish to become Śakra (Lord Śakra), Brahmā (Great Brahmā), the Four Heavenly Kings (Caturmahārājakāyikas), or the most honored ones among the sun and moon, that can be done. But what you now wish for, I truly do not know.'

The seven daughters replied, 'You are the most honored lord in the heavens, possessing majestic and divine power. Why can't you fulfill these wishes? You are like an old ox, unable to pull a cart or plow the fields, of no benefit to its master.'

Śakra devānām Indra (Lord Śakra) replied, 'I heard that there are scriptures to be heard here, so I came to listen. If it is not something I know, I will take my leave.' The seven daughters remained silent and did not reply.

At that time, a voice from the sky said, 'Now Kāśyapa Buddha (one of the past seven Buddhas) is near the Vīraṇa grove. Why not go and ask Kāśyapa Buddha?' The seven daughters were overjoyed upon hearing this and immediately, along with five hundred consorts, those who came to watch, and five hundred people mourning and weeping over the dead in the cemetery, all resolved to go.

At that time, Kāśyapa Buddha (one of the past seven Buddhas) was expounding the Dharma to countless thousands of people. All of them went before Kāśyapa Buddha, paid their respects, and then sat down to one side.

Śakra devānām Indra (Lord Śakra) said to the Buddha, 'I heard earlier that the seven daughters of the king were expounding the Dharma, so I came to listen. The seven daughters then asked me for such wishes, saying, "I wish to obtain a tree without roots, without branches, without leaves, a place without form, a place without the beginning of yin and yang, deep"'


山大呼,音響四聞,不知所在。」我時不能報答,愿佛為七女解說其意。』

「迦葉佛言:『善哉發問,多所過度。是事羅漢、辟支佛尚不能知此事,何況于汝?』

「是時迦葉佛便笑,五色光從口出,照滿佛剎,還繞身,從頂上入。侍者前長跪,問迦葉佛言:『佛不妄笑,愿聞其意。』

「迦葉佛告薩波羅:『汝見是女不?』

「『唯然已見。』

「『此國王七女共發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心已來,供養五百佛已,當復萬佛,卻後十劫悉當作佛,皆同一字,號名復多羅賁,剎土名首陀波。其佛壽三萬歲。是時人民被服、飲食,譬如第二忉利天上所有。佛般泥洹后,經道留止八千歲乃盡。是佛時說法,當度七十五億萬人令得菩薩及羅漢道。』

「迦葉佛授七女別時,即踴躍歡喜,便住虛空中,離地二十丈,從上來下悉化成男子,即得阿惟越致。五百婇女及千五百天與人,見七女化成男,踴躍歡喜,皆發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心。一千人遠離塵垢,皆得法眼。」

佛告婆羅門:「此國王七女富樂、端正、豪貴,尚不恃身作綺好。所以者何?用念非常,是身不可久得故。一切世間人但坐愚癡故,墮十二因緣,便有生死。人生若皆由恩愛,從生致老,從老致病,從病致死,從死致啼

I was unable to answer at that time, and I hope the Buddha can explain its meaning to the seven women. Kasyapa Buddha said, 'Excellent question, it will help many to be liberated. Even Arhats (Arhat, enlightened saints who have attained Nirvana) and Pratyekabuddhas (Pratyekabuddha, enlightened ones who achieve enlightenment without a teacher) cannot fully understand this matter, let alone you?' At that moment, Kasyapa Buddha smiled, and five-colored light emanated from his mouth, illuminating the entire Buddha-kshetra (Buddha-kshetra, Buddha's land), then circled around himself and entered from the top of his head. The attendant stepped forward, knelt down, and asked Kasyapa Buddha, 'The Buddha does not smile without a reason, I hope to hear the reason for it.' Kasyapa Buddha said to Sāpala, 'Do you see these women?' 'Yes, I have seen them.' 'These seven daughters of the king have been cultivating the Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi-citta (Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi-citta, the mind of unsurpassed, complete and perfect enlightenment) and have made offerings to five hundred Buddhas. They will make offerings to ten thousand more Buddhas, and after ten kalpas (kalpa, unit of time), they will all become Buddhas, and their Buddha names will be the same, named Punyatarabeni, and their Buddha-land will be named Suddhavati. The lifespan of these Buddhas will be thirty thousand years. At that time, the clothing and food of the people will be like those in the second Trayastrimsa heaven (Trayastrimsa, one of the six heavens of the desire realm). After the Buddhas attain Parinirvana (Parinirvana, complete Nirvana), the teachings will remain for eight thousand years before disappearing. When these Buddhas preach the Dharma, they will liberate seventy-five billion people, enabling them to attain the stages of Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva, a practitioner who seeks enlightenment) and Arhat.' When Kasyapa Buddha gave the seven women a vyakarana (vyakarana, prediction of future Buddhahood), they immediately rejoiced and stayed in the air, twenty zhang (ancient Chinese unit of measurement) above the ground. When they came down from the air, they all transformed into men and immediately attained the stage of Avaivartika (Avaivartika, non-retrogression). The five hundred female attendants and the one thousand five hundred devas (devas, gods) and humans, seeing the seven women transformed into men, rejoiced and all generated the Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi-citta. One thousand people were freed from defilements and all obtained the Dharma-caksu (Dharma-caksu, the wisdom to see the truth). The Buddha told the Brahmana (Brahmana, ancient Indian priestly class), 'These seven daughters of the king are so wealthy, happy, beautiful, and noble, yet they do not rely on their bodies to indulge in pleasure. Why is that? Because they often think of impermanence, and this body cannot be possessed for long. All people in the world fall into the twelve nidanas (dvadasanga, twelve interdependent causal relationships) because of their ignorance, and thus there is birth and death. If a person's life is dominated by love and attachment, they will go from birth to old age, from old age to sickness, from sickness to death, and from death to weeping.'


哭,得苦痛。人生若皆從恩愛,當自觀身,亦當觀他人身。坐起當念身中惡露、涕唾、寒熱、臭處、不凈。如是何等類,身一壞時,還化作蟲,自食其肉,骨節支解,消為灰土。還自念:『我身死亦當如是。』不當恃身作綺好,當念非常。若人施行善,不自貢高、綺語者,死後皆生天上;若施行惡者,當入泥犁中。女人所以墮泥犁中多者何?但坐嫉妒,姿態多故。」

佛說是時,婆羅門女即踴躍歡喜,解身上珠寶用散佛上。佛威神令所散住虛空中化作寶蓋,中有聲言:「善哉!如佛所言無有異。」

佛爾時便感動,放威神,于座上以足指按地,三千大千剎土皆為大動;光明照十方,百歲枯樹皆生華果,諸空溝澗皆自然有水,箜篌樂器不鼓自鳴,婦女珠環皆自作聲,盲者得視,聾者得聽,啞者得語,傴者得伸,拘躄者得愈,手足病者得愈,狂者得正,被毒者毒不為行,拘閉者悉得解脫,百鳥貍獸皆相和悲鳴。爾時拘留國中人民無男、無女皆大歡喜,和心相向若得禪。

佛作是變化時,拘留國王捐珠,踴躍歡喜,及百大臣、婆羅門女,與其眷屬,及五百婆羅門,皆發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心。復有五百比丘得羅漢道。國中五百人悉須陀洹道。

佛說是經已,菩薩、比丘僧、優婆塞、優婆夷、國王、

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本:哭泣是因為痛苦。如果人生都沉溺於恩愛,應當觀察自己的身體,也應當觀察他人的身體。坐臥起立時應當想到身體中的污穢之物、鼻涕唾液、寒冷暑熱、臭氣熏天之處、不乾淨之物。像這樣的身體最終會變成什麼樣呢?身體一旦壞死,就會化作蟲子,自己啃食自己的肉,骨骼關節分離解體,最終消散成灰土。還應當這樣想:『我死後也會變成這樣。』不應當依仗身體而追求華麗美好,應當想到世事無常。如果有人行善,不自高自大、不說虛妄不實的話,死後都會升到天上;如果作惡,就會墮入地獄之中。女人為什麼會多墮入地獄之中呢?只是因為嫉妒心重,姿態放蕩的緣故。」

佛陀說完這些話時,婆羅門女立刻跳躍歡喜,解下身上的珠寶,用來散在佛陀身上。佛陀以威神之力,使這些散開的珠寶停留在虛空中,化作寶蓋,寶蓋中發出聲音說:『說得好啊!正如佛陀所說,沒有絲毫差異。』

這時,佛陀便被感動,放出威神之力,在座位上用腳趾按壓地面,三千大千世界都為之震動;光明照耀十方,百年的枯樹都開花結果,所有的空溝水渠都自然涌出水來,箜篌等樂器不用敲打就自己發出聲音,婦女佩戴的珠環都自己發出聲響,盲人能夠看見,聾人能夠聽見,啞巴能夠說話,駝背的人能夠挺直腰背,瘸腿的人能夠痊癒,手腳有病的人能夠痊癒,瘋癲的人恢復正常,身中劇毒的人毒性不再發作,被囚禁的人都得到解脫,各種鳥類和野獸都互相和鳴悲叫。這時,拘留國中的人民,無論男女,都非常歡喜,心意相通,如同進入禪定一般。

佛陀顯現這些變化時,拘留國王捐獻珠寶,跳躍歡喜,以及百位大臣、婆羅門女和她的眷屬,以及五百位婆羅門,都發起了阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心(無上正等正覺之心)。又有五百位比丘證得了阿羅漢果位。拘留國中有五百人證得了須陀洹道(入流果)。

【English Translation】 English version: Crying comes from suffering. If life is all about love and affection, one should observe one's own body, and also observe the bodies of others. When sitting, standing, or lying down, one should contemplate the foul substances within the body, such as mucus, saliva, heat, foul odors, and impurities. What kind of thing is this body ultimately? Once the body decays, it will turn into worms, which will devour its own flesh, the bones will separate and disintegrate, and eventually it will dissolve into ashes and dust. One should also think: 'My body will also be like this when I die.' One should not rely on the body to pursue beauty and pleasure, but should remember impermanence. If a person practices good deeds, without arrogance or false speech, they will be reborn in the heavens after death; if they commit evil deeds, they will fall into hell. Why do women fall into hell more often? It is only because of jealousy and wanton behavior.

When the Buddha finished speaking, the Brahman woman immediately jumped up with joy, took off her jewelry, and scattered it over the Buddha. The Buddha, with his divine power, caused the scattered jewels to remain in the air, transforming into a jeweled canopy, from which a voice said: 'Well said! Just as the Buddha has said, there is no difference.'

At that time, the Buddha was moved and released his divine power. He pressed the ground with his toe on the seat, and the three thousand great thousand worlds all shook; the light illuminated the ten directions, hundred-year-old withered trees all blossomed and bore fruit, all the empty ditches and streams naturally filled with water, the konghou (a Chinese harp) and other musical instruments played themselves without being struck, the pearl rings worn by women all made sounds by themselves, the blind could see, the deaf could hear, the mute could speak, the hunchbacked could straighten their backs, the lame could be healed, those with diseases of the hands and feet could be healed, the mad could become sane, those poisoned were no longer affected by the poison, those imprisoned were all freed, and all kinds of birds and beasts sang together in sorrow. At that time, the people in the Kuliya (name of a country) kingdom, both men and women, were all very happy, and their hearts were in harmony, as if they had entered into meditation.

When the Buddha manifested these transformations, the Kuliya king donated jewels and jumped with joy, as well as the hundred ministers, the Brahman woman and her family, and the five hundred Brahmans, all generated the Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi-citta (the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment). Furthermore, five hundred monks attained the state of Arhat (one who is worthy). Five hundred people in the kingdom attained the state of Srotapanna (stream-enterer).
