佛說龍施女經

聞如是:

一時佛游于維耶離奈氏樹園,與大比丘眾千二百五十人俱,及五百眾菩薩。

佛以晨旦,著衣,持缽,入城分衛,眾會皆從;諸天龍神香、華、伎樂倍于常時。

佛到長者須福門外。須福有女,名曰龍施,厥年十四。時在浴室澡浴,涂香,著好衣。為佛眉間毫相之光,照七重樓上,東向見佛在門外住,容貌端正如星中有月,奇相眾好,金色從容,諸根寂定。女大歡喜,則自念言:「今得見佛及眾弟子,當以發意作菩薩行。愿令我得道如佛!」

魔見女發大意,心為不樂,念言:「是女今興大福及欲求佛,必過我界,多度人民。今我當往壞其道意。」

魔便下,化作女父形象、被服,謂龍施言:「今所念者大重。佛道難得,億百千劫勤勞不懈然後乃成。今世幸有佛,不如求羅漢。既要易得,且俱度世泥洹無異。何為貪佛,久負勤苦?汝是我女,故語汝耳。」

龍施對曰:「不如父言。羅漢與佛雖俱度世,功德不同。佛智大度,如十方空,度人無極。羅漢智少,若一時耳。何有高才樂於少者?」

一時,佛陀在維耶離(Viyali,古印度城市名)奈氏樹園,與一千二百五十位大比丘以及五百位菩薩在一起。

佛陀在清晨穿好衣服,拿著缽,進入城中乞食,大眾都跟隨在他身後;諸天、龍神所獻的香、花、伎樂比平時多很多。

佛陀來到長者須福(Suhfu)的門外。須福有個女兒,名叫龍施(Long Shi),十四歲。當時她在浴室洗澡,塗抹香料,穿著漂亮的衣服。佛陀眉間毫相的光芒,照亮了七重樓上,她向東看見佛陀站在門外,容貌端正如同星星中的月亮,奇妙的相貌美好無比,金色的光芒從容淡定,諸根寂靜安定。龍施女非常歡喜,心想:『今天能夠見到佛陀和他的弟子們,我應當發願修行菩薩道。愿我將來能夠像佛陀一樣得道!』

魔看到龍施女發了如此大的願心,心中很不高興,心想:『這個女子現在興起如此大的福報,並且想要成佛,必定會超越我的境界,度化很多人。現在我應當去破壞她的道心。』

魔就下來,化作龍施女父親的形象和穿著,對龍施女說:『你現在所想的事情太重大了。佛道難以成就,需要億百千劫的勤勞不懈才能成就。現在有幸遇到佛陀,不如求證羅漢果位。羅漢果位既容易得到,而且同樣可以度過生死,進入涅槃,沒有什麼區別。為什麼要貪求成佛,長期承受勤勞辛苦呢?你是我女兒,所以我才告訴你這些。』

龍施女回答說:『我不同意父親的說法。羅漢和佛陀雖然都可以度過生死,但功德不同。佛陀的智慧廣大無邊,如同十方虛空,度化眾生沒有窮盡。羅漢的智慧狹小,就像一時一樣。哪裡有才能高的人喜歡追求小的成就呢?』

【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks the Dragon Bestowal Girl Sutra

Translated by Upasaka Zhi Qian of the Yuezhi in Wu

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Naishi Tree Garden in Viyali (Viyali, an ancient Indian city), together with a great assembly of twelve hundred and fifty Bhikshus and five hundred Bodhisattvas.

In the early morning, the Buddha put on his robes, held his bowl, and entered the city to beg for food, with the assembly following behind him; the incense, flowers, music, and other offerings from the gods and dragons were more abundant than usual.

The Buddha arrived outside the gate of the elder Suhfu (Suhfu). Suhfu had a daughter named Long Shi (Long Shi), who was fourteen years old. At that time, she was bathing in the bathroom, applying fragrant oils, and wearing beautiful clothes. The light from the white hair between the Buddha's eyebrows illuminated the seven-storied building, and facing east, she saw the Buddha standing outside the gate, his appearance dignified like the moon among the stars, his wondrous features beautiful beyond compare, his golden radiance serene and composed, and his senses tranquil and settled. The girl Long Shi was overjoyed and thought to herself, 'Today I am able to see the Buddha and his disciples, I should make a vow to cultivate the Bodhisattva path. May I attain enlightenment like the Buddha in the future!'

The demon, seeing that the girl Long Shi had made such a great vow, was very unhappy and thought, 'This girl is now generating such great merit and wants to become a Buddha, she will surely surpass my realm and liberate many people. Now I must go and destroy her aspiration for enlightenment.'

The demon then descended, transforming into the image and clothing of Long Shi's father, and said to Long Shi, 'What you are thinking about now is too important. The Buddha path is difficult to attain, requiring diligent and unremitting effort for hundreds of millions of kalpas before it can be achieved. Now that we are fortunate enough to encounter the Buddha, it is better to seek the attainment of Arhatship. Arhatship is both easy to obtain, and it also allows one to transcend birth and death and enter Nirvana without any difference. Why be greedy for Buddhahood, enduring long-term hard work and suffering? You are my daughter, so I am telling you this.'

Long Shi replied, 'I do not agree with what you say, Father. Although both Arhats and Buddhas can transcend birth and death, their merits are different. The Buddha's wisdom is vast and boundless, like the ten directions of space, liberating beings without end. The wisdom of an Arhat is small, like a moment in time. How can someone with great talent be happy with a small achievement?'


魔復言:「未曾聞女人得作轉輪聖王,況乃欲得作佛!佛道長久,不如求羅漢早取泥洹。」

龍施報言:「我亦聞女人不得作轉輪聖王,不得作帝釋,不得作梵王,不得作佛。我當精進,轉此女身竟,受作男子身。蓋聞天下尊行菩薩道億劫不懈者,后皆得作佛。」

魔見女意不轉,益用愁毒,更作急教言:「作菩薩行者,當不貪於世間,不惜于壽命。今汝精進,能從樓上自投于地者,后可得佛。」

龍施念言:「今我見佛乃自愛慾菩薩道。父有教,以精進棄身可得佛道。我何惜此危脆之命?」

女即于欄邊叉手向佛言:「我今自歸天中之天,以一切慜念,知我所求。請棄軀命,不捨菩薩。」以身施佛愿而散華以,便縱身自投樓下。于空中未及至地,女身則化成男子。

時佛乃笑,五色光從口出,照一佛剎,還從頂入。賢者阿難前跪問言:「佛不妄笑。愿聞其意!」

佛言:「阿難!汝見此女自投空中,化成男子不?」

對曰:「見。」

佛言:「此女乃前世時以事萬佛,后當供養恒沙如來,卻至七億六千萬劫當得作佛,號名龍盛,其壽一劫。般泥洹后,經道興盛半劫乃滅。時佛說法,當度九十七億萬人,令得菩薩及羅漢道。是時人民飲食,當如第二忉利天上。」

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本: 魔(Mara)又說:『我從未聽說過女人能夠成為轉輪聖王(cakravarti-raja,統治世界的理想君主),更何況是成佛!成佛之道漫長而久遠,不如求證阿羅漢(arhat,已證涅槃的聖者),早日進入涅槃(nirvana,解脫生死輪迴的狀態)。』

龍施(Naga-datta)回答說:『我也聽說女人不能成為轉輪聖王,不能成為帝釋(Indra,忉利天之主),不能成為梵王(Brahma,色界天之主),也不能成佛。但我會精進修行,轉變這個女身,最終受生為男子身。我聽說天下至尊的佛陀,都是經過無數劫不懈地修行菩薩道(bodhisattva-path,通往成佛的道路)后才成就的。』

魔看到龍施的意志沒有動搖,更加愁苦惱怒,於是用更緊急的教唆之言說:『修行菩薩道的人,應當不貪戀世間,不吝惜生命。現在你如果能夠從樓上跳下去,之後就可以成佛。』

龍施心想:『現在我爲了見到佛陀,甚至珍愛自己的身體,卻耽誤了菩薩道。父親曾經教導我,通過精進地捨棄身體可以證得佛道。我為何要吝惜這脆弱的生命呢?』

於是,龍施走到欄桿邊,合掌向佛說道:『我現在歸依天中之天(devatideva,對佛陀的尊稱),以一切慈悲之心,瞭解我所求。請允許我捨棄軀體和生命,不放棄菩薩道。』說完,她爲了向佛陀奉獻自己的生命而散花,然後縱身從樓上跳了下去。在空中,還沒落到地上,她的女身就化成了男子。

這時,佛陀笑了,五色光芒從口中射出,照亮了一個佛剎(buddha-ksetra,佛陀的凈土),然後又從頭頂進入。賢者阿難(Ananda,佛陀的十大弟子之一,以記憶力超群著稱)上前跪拜問道:『佛陀不會無緣無故地笑。希望能夠聽到其中的緣由!』

佛陀說:『阿難!你看到這個女子從空中跳下,化成了男子嗎?』

阿難回答說:『看到了。』

佛陀說:『這個女子在前世曾經用種種事物供養過無數佛陀,將來還會供養恒河沙數般的如來(tathagata,佛陀的稱號之一)。經過七億六千萬劫后,她將會成佛,佛號為龍盛(Naga-ketu),壽命為一劫(kalpa,極長的時間單位)。般涅槃(parinirvana,佛陀的最終涅槃)后,她的經法教義興盛半劫才會滅盡。那時,這位佛陀說法,將會度化九十七億萬人,讓他們證得菩薩和阿羅漢的果位。那時的人民的飲食,將會如同第二忉利天(Trayastrimsa,欲界六天之一)上的天人一樣。』

【English Translation】 English version: The demon (Mara) further said: 'I have never heard of a woman becoming a Cakravarti-raja (wheel-turning monarch, an ideal ruler of the world), let alone becoming a Buddha! The path to Buddhahood is long and distant; it is better to seek Arhatship (a perfected being who has attained nirvana) and enter Nirvana (the state of liberation from the cycle of birth and death) sooner.'

Naga-datta (Dragon-given) replied: 'I have also heard that women cannot become Cakravarti-rajas, cannot become Indra (ruler of the Trayastrimsa Heaven), cannot become Brahma (ruler of the Form Realm), and cannot become Buddhas. But I will diligently practice to transform this female body and eventually be reborn as a male. I have heard that the most honored Buddhas in the world all attain Buddhahood after practicing the Bodhisattva-path (the path to enlightenment) tirelessly for countless eons.'

Seeing that Naga-datta's will did not waver, the demon became even more distressed and angry. He then used more urgent words of temptation, saying: 'Those who practice the Bodhisattva-path should not be greedy for worldly things and should not be stingy with their lives. Now, if you can jump from this building, you can become a Buddha later.'

Naga-datta thought: 'Now, I am delaying the Bodhisattva-path because I cherish my body, even though I want to see the Buddha. My father once taught me that one can attain Buddhahood by diligently sacrificing one's body. Why should I be stingy with this fragile life?'

Therefore, Naga-datta went to the railing, put her palms together, and said to the Buddha: 'I now take refuge in the Devatideva (God of Gods, a respectful title for the Buddha), with all compassion, knowing what I seek. Please allow me to give up my body and life, and not abandon the Bodhisattva-path.' After saying this, she scattered flowers to offer her life to the Buddha and then jumped from the building. In the air, before she reached the ground, her female body transformed into a male body.

At this time, the Buddha smiled, and five-colored light emanated from his mouth, illuminating a Buddha-ksetra (Buddha-field, a pure land of a Buddha), and then re-entered from the top of his head. The wise Ananda (one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha, known for his excellent memory) stepped forward, knelt down, and asked: 'The Buddha does not smile without a reason. I wish to hear the reason for this!'

The Buddha said: 'Ananda! Did you see this woman jump from the air and transform into a man?'

Ananda replied: 'I saw it.'

The Buddha said: 'This woman, in her previous life, used various things to make offerings to countless Buddhas. In the future, she will also make offerings to Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River (Ganga). After seven hundred and sixty million kalpas (an extremely long unit of time), she will become a Buddha, named Naga-ketu (Dragon Banner), with a lifespan of one kalpa. After her Parinirvana (the final nirvana of a Buddha), her teachings will flourish for half a kalpa before disappearing. At that time, this Buddha will preach the Dharma, saving ninety-seven billion people, enabling them to attain the fruits of Bodhisattvas and Arhats. At that time, the people's food and drink will be like those of the devas (gods) in the second Trayastrimsa Heaven (Heaven of the Thirty-three).'


於是龍施身住佛前,報父母言:「愿放舍我,得作沙門!」父母即聽。

諸家親屬合五百人,及八百天神,見女人龍施化成男子,皆發無上正真道意。魔王見眾人求佛,更多憂愁不樂,慚愧而歸。

佛說是時,莫不歡喜。

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本: 於是龍施(Naga Datta,龍施)以男身站在佛前,稟告父母說:『希望允許我出家,成為沙門(Sramana,修行者)!』父母立即同意。

各家親屬共五百人,以及八百位天神,見到身為女人的龍施(Naga Datta)化成男子,都發起了無上正真道意(Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi-citta,無上正等正覺之心)。魔王見到眾人向佛求法,更加憂愁不樂,慚愧地離開了。

佛陀宣說此經時,所有在場的人都非常歡喜。

《佛說龍施女經》

【English Translation】 English version: Then Naga Datta (Naga Datta, Dragon Giver), in the form of a man, stood before the Buddha and said to his parents, 'May you allow me to renounce the household life and become a Sramana (Sramana, ascetic)!' His parents immediately agreed.

Five hundred relatives from various families, along with eight hundred deities, upon seeing the female Naga Datta transform into a man, all generated the mind of Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi-citta (Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi-citta, unsurpassed perfect enlightenment). Mara (Mara, the Evil One), seeing so many people seeking the Buddha, became even more distressed and unhappy, and departed in shame.

When the Buddha spoke this sutra, everyone present rejoiced.
