(The Sengyou Record states that the translator's name is missing; it is now tentatively attached to the Song Record.)
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was in the country of Viyaro (維耶羅國), at a place called Loka Sound. At that time, he was with eight hundred bhiksus (比丘僧) and ten thousand bodhisattvas (菩薩).
At that time, there was a poor old mother who came to where the Buddha was, prostrated herself before the Buddha with her head and face touching the ground, and said to the Buddha, 'I wish to ask some questions.'
The Buddha said, 'Excellent! Excellent! You may ask.'
The old mother said, 'Where do birth, old age, sickness, and death come from, and where do they go? Where do form (rupa), feeling (vedana), perception (samjna), mental formations (samskara), and consciousness (vijnana) come from, and where do they go? Where do the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind come from, and where do they go? Where do earth, water, fire, wind, and space come from, and where do they go?'
The Buddha said, 'Birth, old age, sickness, and death come from nowhere, and go nowhere; form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness come from nowhere, and go nowhere; the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind come from nowhere, and go nowhere; earth, water, fire, wind, and space come from nowhere, and go nowhere.'
The Buddha said, 'All dharmas are like this. For example, when two pieces of wood are rubbed together, fire is produced, and the fire then burns the wood. When the wood is exhausted, the fire goes out.'
The Buddha asked the old mother, 'Where did this fire originally come from, and where does it go when it goes out?'
The old mother replied to the Buddha, 'When conditions come together, fire is produced; when conditions are scattered, the fire goes out.'
The Buddha said, 'All dharmas are like this: they are formed when conditions come together, and they are extinguished when conditions are scattered. All dharmas come from nowhere, and go nowhere. When the eye sees beautiful forms, that is the mind, and the mind is form.'
【English Translation】 English version: Both are empty, nothing is formed from anything, and extinction is the same. All dharmas are like a drum, not formed from a single thing. If someone holds a drumstick and strikes the drum, the drum will make a sound. This drum sound is also empty, the future sound is also empty, and the past sound is also empty. This sound does not come from wood, leather, drumstick, or human hand; it is the combination of various things that forms the drum sound, and the sound comes from emptiness and returns to emptiness. All things in the universe are like this. My life, human life, is also like this. The original state is pure, nothing comes from anything, nothing causes the creation of dharma, and dharma also has no substance. For example, when clouds rise and become dark, it rains. The rain does not come from the dragon's body, nor does it come from the dragon's mind; it is all caused by the conditions of the dragon that bring about the rain. All dharmas do not come from anywhere, and do not go anywhere. For example, a painter first prepares the board, then mixes various colors, and then begins to paint. The painting does not come from the board or the colors; it is according to the painter's intention that everything is accomplished. Birth and death are also like this, each with different categories: hell, animals, hungry ghosts, heavens, and the world are also like this. Those who understand this wisdom will not be attached; attachment will lead to bondage.
The old woman heard the Buddha's words and was very happy. She said to herself, 'I have received the grace of the 'Heaven Above Heaven' (a title for the Buddha) and obtained the 'Dharma Eye' (wisdom to correctly understand the Dharma). Although my body is old and weak, I now have peace.'
Ananda, straightening his robes, knelt before the Buddha and said, 'This old woman understood the Buddha's words immediately. What is the cause and condition that she has such wisdom?'
The Buddha said, 'The Buddha's virtue is great and sublime, and that is why she understood immediately. This old woman was my mother in a previous life when I first aspired to Bodhi (the mind of enlightenment).'
Ananda said to the Buddha, 'Why was the Buddha's mother in a previous life so distressed and poor?'
The Buddha said, 'In the past, during the time of 'Krakucchanda Buddha' (one of the past seven Buddhas), I was a Bodhisattva and wanted to become a 'Shramana' (a renunciate). My mother, out of love, did not allow me to become a Shramana. I was sad and did not eat for a day. Because of this, in previous and later lives in the world, I encountered such hardships for five hundred lifetimes.'
The Buddha told Ananda, 'When this old woman's life ends, she will be reborn in the land of 'Amitabha Buddha' (the Buddha of the Western Pure Land) and make offerings to all the Buddhas.'

【English Translation】 English version: After sixty-eight billion kalpas, she will become a Buddha named Fubo Jian (扶波健), and his country will be called Huazuo (化作). All the clothing and food there will be like those in the Trayastrimsa Heaven (忉利天). The people in that country will all live for one kalpa.
After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, the old mother, as well as Bodhisattvas like Ananda (阿難), Bhikshu monks, Devas, Nagas, ghosts, spirits, and Asuras (阿須倫), were all very happy. They came forward, touched the ground with their heads and faces, paid homage to the Buddha, and departed.
