佛說腹中女聽經

北涼天竺三藏曇無讖譯

佛在羅閱祇,與諸菩薩、比丘僧、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷,及諸天人民無央數共會,聽佛說經。

時,會中有迦羅婦懷妊在座,腹中子叉手聽經,佛欲使眾會見之,便現大光明,照迦羅婦。座中眾人,皆見腹中女叉手聽經,如照鏡無有異。

佛持八種聲,問腹中女言:「汝叉手聽經,以何故爾?」

女用佛威神,即答佛言:「以世間人皆行十惡,欲令行十善,是故叉手聽經;又以世間人貪淫、瞋恚、愚癡、生死不絕,是故叉手聽經;複用世間人不孝順父母,不供養沙門婆羅門道人,是故叉手聽經。」

時女說是語竟,便生;譬如太子從右脅生,地為六反震動,虛空中有無央數天,自然有音樂聲。雨天眾華,有自然千葉蓮華,大如車輪,以寶作莖,狀如青琉璃,女即坐蓮華上。

忉利天王釋持天衣,從虛空中來下,與女言:「裸形可取此衣著之。」

女報言:「我不著此衣,汝欲裝挍我耶!汝為羅漢,我為菩薩,汝非我輩,不與我同類,我自當有衣來。」

佛語拘翼:「此不為裝挍菩

薩,發心為菩薩,自致得三十二相、八十種好,爾乃為裝挍菩薩耳!」

舍利弗白佛言:「此女為從何國來?當送衣也。」

佛言:「此女從東南方佛剎來,其國名清凈,去此十萬佛剎,女從本剎來欲見佛,自當有持衣來者。」本國衣便自然在虛空中來,肅肅有聲,女見衣來便著之,當得五通,又女本國人盡得五通。女得衣著訖,便從蓮華上,下行至佛前,女一舉足,地為六反震動,便頭面著地,為佛作禮,三言:「南無佛!」繞佛已訖,便長跪白佛:「今座中大有諸迦羅婦,愿佛為說經,令得男子身。」

佛言:「我亦不使汝作男子,亦不使汝作女人,皆自從身行得。」

佛言:「有一事可疾得男子,何等為一?發心為菩薩道,是為一事;又女人身當內自觀,譬如機關骨節相柱,但筋皮上,女人常畏人,譬如鴟梟、蛇蚖、蝦蟆,不敢晝日出,常畏人。譬如婢使,常與惡露臭處俱,雖是國王女,猶復畏人,女人眾惡亦復如是。」

時座中迦羅婦七十五人,聞佛說經歡喜踴躍,前以頭面著地,為佛作禮,白佛言:「我願發菩薩心作男子,我不得男子身終不起。」

時七十五迦羅越,從舍衛國來至佛所,見諸婦皆在佛前,便心念言:「失我曹婦已。」便問舍利弗:「此女人悉是我曹

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本:她說:『發心成為菩薩,自然就能獲得三十二相、八十種好,然後才算是真正莊嚴的菩薩!』

舍利弗(Śāriputra)問佛說:『這位女子是從哪個佛國來的?應該會有人送衣服給她吧。』

佛說:『這位女子從東南方的佛剎來,那個國家名叫清凈,距離這裡有十萬佛剎。這位女子從她的本國來,想要見佛,自然會有人拿著衣服來。』她本國的衣服便自然地在虛空中出現,發出肅肅的聲音。女子看見衣服來了,便穿上它,當即獲得五神通。而且這位女子的本國人全都具有五神通。女子穿好衣服后,便從蓮花上下來,走到佛前。她每走一步,大地就六次震動。然後她頭面著地,向佛行禮,說了三聲:『南無佛!(Namo Buddha!)』繞佛完畢后,便長跪著對佛說:『現在座中有很多迦羅婦(Kula-vadhu,良家婦女),希望佛能為她們說法,讓她們能夠得到男子之身。』

佛說:『我既不讓你們變成男子,也不讓你們變成女人,一切都取決於自身的行為。』

佛說:『有一種方法可以快速得到男子之身,那是什麼呢?就是發心修菩薩道,這就是一種方法。而且女人應當從內在觀察自身,就像機關一樣,骨節互相支撐,外面只是筋和皮。女人常常畏懼他人,就像鴟梟、蛇蚖、蝦蟆一樣,不敢在白天出來,總是畏懼他人。又像婢女一樣,總是和污穢惡臭的地方在一起。即使是國王的女兒,仍然會畏懼他人,女人的種種惡習也是如此。』

當時座中的七十五位迦羅婦(Kula-vadhu,良家婦女),聽了佛的說法,歡喜踴躍,上前頭面著地,向佛行禮,並對佛說:『我們願意發菩薩心,希望能夠成為男子,如果不能得到男子之身,我們誓不起身。』

當時七十五位迦羅越(Kula-pati,良家男子),從舍衛國(Śrāvastī)來到佛所,看見這些婦女都在佛前,便心想:『我們的妻子都丟了嗎?』於是問舍利弗(Śāriputra):『這些女人都是我們的……』

【English Translation】 English version: She said, 'By resolving to become a Bodhisattva, one naturally attains the thirty-two marks and eighty minor characteristics, and only then can one be considered a truly adorned Bodhisattva!'

Śāriputra asked the Buddha, 'From which Buddha-land did this woman come? Surely someone will send her clothes.'

The Buddha said, 'This woman comes from a Buddha-land in the southeast, a country named Pure, which is ten hundred thousand Buddha-lands away from here. This woman came from her own country, desiring to see the Buddha, and naturally someone will come with clothes.' Her country's clothes then naturally appeared in the void, making a 'susu' sound. The woman saw the clothes coming and put them on, immediately gaining the five supernormal powers. Moreover, all the people of this woman's country possess the five supernormal powers. After the woman finished putting on her clothes, she descended from the lotus flower and walked to the Buddha. With each step she took, the earth shook six times. Then she prostrated herself before the Buddha, saying three times, 'Namo Buddha!' After circumambulating the Buddha, she knelt and said to the Buddha, 'There are many Kula-vadhu (women from good families) in this assembly. I hope the Buddha will preach the Dharma for them, so that they can obtain a male body.'

The Buddha said, 'I will neither make you into men nor make you into women; everything depends on your own actions.'

The Buddha said, 'There is one thing that can quickly lead to obtaining a male body. What is it? It is resolving to cultivate the Bodhisattva path; this is one thing. Moreover, women should observe themselves internally, like a machine where bones and joints support each other, with only skin and tendons on the outside. Women are often afraid of others, like owls, snakes, and toads, not daring to come out during the day, always fearing others. Like servants, they are always with filth and foul odors. Even the daughter of a king still fears others; the many evils of women are also like this.'

At that time, seventy-five Kula-vadhu (women from good families) in the assembly, hearing the Buddha's teaching, rejoiced and leaped for joy. They came forward, prostrated themselves before the Buddha, and said to the Buddha, 'We are willing to generate the Bodhi mind, hoping to become men. If we cannot obtain a male body, we vow not to rise.'

At that time, seventy-five Kula-pati (men from good families) came from Śrāvastī to the Buddha's place, saw these women all in front of the Buddha, and thought, 'Have we lost our wives?' Then they asked Śāriputra, 'Are these women all our...'


婦,何為是間?」

舍利弗答言:「欲作比丘尼,卿當聽不?」

迦羅越答言:「若欲作比丘尼者,先使我曹作比丘僧。」

舍利弗白佛言:「是七十五迦羅越,皆欲作比丘。」

佛呼:「善男子來,皆作比丘。」頭髮自然墮,袈裟便著身,手持應器,皆前為佛作禮。

時七十五婦,各脫珠環,皆以散佛上,便自然虛空中,化作七十五交露珠瓔帳,帳中有七寶床,床上有坐,佛邊有無央數菩薩聽經。

七十五婦人見是變化,皆大歡喜,即用佛威神,飛住虛空,虛空中自然有華,雨散佛上,從虛空中來下,便得男子身,前白佛言:「我願作比丘。」

佛語彌勒菩薩:「將去授戒。」彌勒菩薩即授戒。

作比丘僧女,自然有化華蓋七重,其莖如蓮華莖,即持與母言:「佛是天上、天下度人之師,母以華蓋上佛,是天上、天下之師,蓋上之後,母亦當為天下之蓋。」

女語母言:「今當發菩薩心。」

母答女言:「我始懷汝時,于夢中常見佛及法、比丘僧,無復貪淫、瞋恚、愚癡心,身體安隱,知我腹中子,為是菩薩摩訶薩,以是令我安隱。」

爾時發菩薩心已,母得華蓋便持上佛,地為六反震動。

佛語舍利弗:「四天下星宿尚可知數,是女

【English Translation】 English version: The woman asked: 'What is this place?' Sariputra (Sariputra, one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha, known for his wisdom) replied: '(Do you) want to become bhiksunis (bhiksuni, Buddhist female renunciants), are you willing?' Kalavela (Kalavela, an ancient Indian place name) replied: 'If (they) want to become bhiksunis, let us become bhiksu-samghas (bhiksu-samgha, Buddhist male renunciants) first.' Sariputra reported to the Buddha: 'These seventy-five Kalavelas all want to become bhiksus.' The Buddha called out: 'Good men, come, all become bhiksus.' Their hair naturally fell off, the kasaya (kasaya, the robe worn by Buddhist monks) immediately clothed their bodies, they held alms bowls in their hands, and they all stepped forward to pay homage to the Buddha. At that time, the seventy-five women each took off their pearl bracelets and scattered them on the Buddha, and naturally in the empty space, seventy-five interlinked pearl-adorned canopies appeared, with seven-jeweled beds inside the canopies, and seats on the beds, and countless bodhisattvas (bodhisattva, one who aspires to become a Buddha) listening to the teachings beside the Buddha. The seventy-five women, seeing this transformation, were all very happy, and by the power of the Buddha's majestic spirit, they flew into the empty space, and naturally there were flowers in the empty space, raining down on the Buddha, and coming down from the empty space, they obtained male bodies, and stepped forward to report to the Buddha: 'We wish to become bhiksus.' The Buddha told Maitreya Bodhisattva (Maitreya Bodhisattva, the future Buddha): 'Take them to receive the precepts.' Maitreya Bodhisattva then gave them the precepts. (One of) the women who became a bhiksu naturally had a manifested seven-layered canopy, the stem of the canopy was like a lotus stem, and she took the canopy and said to her mother: 'The Buddha is the teacher who delivers people in heaven and on earth, mother, use the canopy to offer to the Buddha, (the Buddha) is the teacher in heaven and on earth, after covering (the Buddha), mother should also become a shelter for the people of the world.' The daughter said to her mother: 'Now we should generate the bodhicitta (the aspiration for enlightenment).' The mother replied to her daughter: 'When I first conceived you, I often saw the Buddha and the Dharma (teachings), and the bhiksu-samgha in my dreams, and I had no greed, anger, or delusion in my mind, and my body was at peace, and I knew that the child in my womb was a bodhisattva-mahasattva (bodhisattva-mahasattva, a great bodhisattva), and that is why I felt at peace.' At that time, after generating the bodhicitta, the mother obtained the canopy and offered it to the Buddha, and the earth shook six times. The Buddha told Sariputra: 'The stars in the four continents (Sumeru, the four continents in the Buddhist cosmology) can still be counted, this woman...'


前後所度父母,不可知數。」

女言:「一切人謂我是女,當作至誠行。」便化作如八歲沙彌身。

當佛說經及女變化時,無央數人皆發無上正真道意。佛說經竟,皆大歡喜。

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本: 『我前後所度化的父母,數量多得不可計數。』

女子說:『所有人都認為我是女子,應當以至誠之心修行。』隨即變化成如同八歲沙彌(小和尚)的模樣。

當佛陀宣說經典以及女子變化身形的時候,無數的人都發起了無上正真道意(追求最高智慧和真理的心)。佛陀說完經后,大家都非常歡喜。

【English Translation】 English version: 『The number of parents I have delivered in the past is countless.』

The woman said, 『Everyone thinks I am a woman; I should practice with utmost sincerity.』 Then she transformed into the form of an eight-year-old Shami (novice monk).

When the Buddha was expounding the Sutra and the woman was transforming, countless people all aroused the unsurpassed, right, and true mind of enlightenment (the mind seeking the highest wisdom and truth). After the Buddha finished speaking the Sutra, everyone was very happy.
