佛說婦人遇辜經

乞伏秦沙門聖堅譯

聞如是:

一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨精舍,與大比丘眾千二百五十人俱。

時有一人無婦,往詣舍衛國,娶婦本國,自有兩子,大子七歲,次子孩抱,母復懷軀,欲向在產。

天竺禮俗,婦人臨月,歸父母國。時夫婦乘車載二子,當詣舍衛,中路食息並牧牛。時有毒蛇,纏繞牛腳,牛遂離圈,其夫取牛,欲得嚴發,見牛為毒蛇所殺,蛇復舍牛,復纏夫殺。婦遙見之,怖懼戰慄,啼哭呼天,無救護者。

日遂欲冥,去道不遠,有流河水,水碓有家居,婦迫日冥,懼為賊所劫,棄車將二子到水畔,留大子著水邊,抱小子渡水。適到水半,狼食其子,子叫呼母,母時還顧見子,為狼所啖,驚惶怖懼,失抱中子,墮水隨流。母益懊惱,迷惑失志頓躓水中,墮所懷子。遂便渡水,問道行人:「我家父母,為安隱不?」

行人答曰:「昨家失火,皆燒父母,悉盡無餘。」

又問行人:「我夫家姑妐為安隱不?」

行人答曰:「昨有劇賊,傷害其家,姑妐皆死,無完在者。」

其母聞之,愁憂怖懼,心迷意惑,不識東西,脫衣裸

當時有一個沒有妻子的男子,前往舍衛國,娶了一個本國的女子為妻。他自己已經有兩個兒子,大兒子七歲,小兒子還在襁褓中,妻子又懷有身孕,即將分娩。

按照天竺(India)的禮俗,婦人臨近分娩時,要回到父母家。當時這對夫婦乘坐馬車帶著兩個兒子,準備前往舍衛國。在路途中休息時,他們放牛吃草。這時,一條毒蛇纏繞住牛的腳,牛掙脫了束縛。丈夫去拉牛,想要把它拴好,卻看到牛被毒蛇咬死了,蛇又離開了牛,纏繞住丈夫也殺死了。妻子遠遠地看見,驚恐戰慄,啼哭呼天,沒有人來救助。

太陽漸漸西沉,離道路不遠的地方,有一條河流。河邊有水碓和人家。婦人因為天色已晚,害怕被盜賊搶劫,於是丟下馬車,帶著兩個兒子來到河邊,把大兒子留在水邊,抱著小兒子渡河。剛到河中央,一隻狼叼走了她的大兒子,兒子呼叫母親。母親回頭看見兒子被狼吃掉,驚慌恐懼,失手將懷中的小兒子掉入水中,隨水漂走。母親更加懊惱,迷惑失志,在水中跌倒,又失去了腹中的胎兒。於是她渡過河,向路人打聽:『我的父母家,平安嗎?』

路人回答說:『昨天你家失火,你的父母都被燒死了,什麼也沒剩下。』

她又問路人:『我的丈夫家的公婆,平安嗎?』

路人回答說:『昨天有強盜闖入你家,傷害了他們,你的公婆都死了,沒有一個活著的。』

這位母親聽了這些話,愁苦憂傷,驚恐害怕,心神迷亂,不知東西,脫掉了衣服。

【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks of the Misfortune of a Woman Sutra

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in the Jetavana Anathapindika-arama in Shravasti (Śrāvastī), together with a large assembly of twelve hundred and fifty Bhikshus.

At that time, there was a man without a wife who went to Shravasti (Śrāvastī) to marry a woman from his native country. He already had two sons, the elder son being seven years old and the younger son still an infant. The mother was also pregnant and nearing her delivery.

According to the customs of India (India), when a woman is near her delivery, she returns to her parents' home. At that time, the couple was traveling by cart with their two sons, intending to go to Shravasti (Śrāvastī). On the way, they stopped to rest and graze their cow. A poisonous snake coiled around the cow's leg, and the cow broke free. The husband went to retrieve the cow, wanting to tie it up securely, but he saw that the cow had been killed by the poisonous snake. The snake then left the cow and coiled around the husband, killing him as well. The wife saw this from afar, terrified and trembling, crying out to the heavens, but there was no one to help her.

The sun was setting, and not far from the road, there was a flowing river. By the river were water mills and houses. The woman, fearing robbery due to the late hour, abandoned the cart and took her two sons to the riverbank. She left the elder son by the water's edge and carried the younger son across the river. Just as she reached the middle of the river, a wolf devoured her elder son, who cried out to his mother. The mother turned back and saw her son being eaten by the wolf, and in her panic and fear, she dropped the infant in her arms into the water, where he was carried away by the current. The mother was even more distressed, confused, and lost her senses. She stumbled in the water and lost the child she was carrying in her womb. Then she crossed the river and asked a passerby: 'Is my parents' home safe and well?'

The passerby replied: 'Yesterday, your house caught fire, and your parents were burned to death, nothing remains.'

She then asked the passerby: 'Are my husband's parents safe and well?'

The passerby replied: 'Yesterday, violent thieves broke into your house and harmed them. Your husband's parents are all dead, none survived.'

Upon hearing this, the mother was filled with sorrow, worry, fear, and confusion. She lost her sense of direction and took off her clothes.


形,迷惑狂走。道中行人,見大怪之,謂得邪病,鬼神所嬈乎,或謂愁憂迷惑失志,或有唾賤舍避之走,或有憐傷愍念哀之。

時佛在舍衛祇樹給孤獨精舍。時婦馳走,而往趣之,過祇樹園。

爾時,世尊大會說法,四輩弟子,諸天龍神,十方一切,皆悉聽經。諸佛之法,盲者見佛,皆得眼目,聾者得聽,啞者能言,疾病除愈,尪劣強健,被毒不行,心亂得定。

時婦見佛,意即得定,不復愁憂,自視裸形,慚愧伏地。佛呼阿難:「取衣與婦。」即時受教,則取衣與婦。著衣竟,稽首佛足,卻坐一面。佛即說經,為現罪福:「人命無常,合會有別,生者有死,無生不終,一切本空,自作起滅,展轉五道,譬如車輪,已解本無,不復起分。」

婦聞佛言,心開意解,即發無上正真道意,即時得立不退轉地,愁憂除愈,如日無雲。

佛說如是,四輩歡喜,諸天龍神,稽首而退。

當時,世尊(Śākyamuni)正在舉行大法會說法,四眾弟子(比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷),諸天、龍神,十方一切眾生,都來聽經。諸佛的教法,能讓盲人看見佛,都能得到眼目,聾人能夠聽見,啞巴能夠說話,疾病消除痊癒,體弱的人變得強壯,中毒的人不再受毒害,心煩意亂的人得到安定。

這時,那個婦人見到佛,心意立刻安定下來,不再愁苦憂慮,看到自己赤身裸體,感到慚愧,就伏倒在地。佛陀呼喚阿難(Ānanda)說:『拿衣服給這位婦人。』阿難立刻接受教誨,拿衣服給婦人。婦人穿好衣服后,向佛陀的足稽首,退到一旁坐下。佛陀就為她說經,為她開示罪與福:『人的生命是無常的,相聚終有離別,生者必有死,沒有生就不會有終結,一切事物本質上都是空性的,由自己的行為而生起和滅亡,在五道(地獄、餓鬼、畜生、人、天)中輾轉輪迴,就像車輪一樣,一旦明白其本性是空無,就不會再有生滅的分別。』

婦人聽了佛陀的話,心開意解,立刻發起了無上正真道意(Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi),當下就證得了不退轉地(avaivartika-bhūmi),愁苦憂慮都消除了,就像太陽驅散了烏雲一樣。

佛陀說完這些話,四眾弟子都歡喜奉行,諸天龍神,稽首而退。

【English Translation】 English version: Her behavior was confused and frantic. The people on the road, seeing her strange appearance, said that she had contracted an evil disease, that she was being deluded by ghosts and spirits, or that she was confused and had lost her mind due to sorrow and worry. Some spat at her in disgust, avoiding her and running away, while others felt pity and compassion for her.

At that time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove Anathapindika's Monastery (Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma) in Śrāvastī. At this time, the woman ran towards the monastery, passing through the Jeta Grove.

At that time, the World Honored One (Śākyamuni) was holding a great Dharma assembly, and the fourfold assembly (bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, upāsikās), the devas, nāgas, and all beings in the ten directions were listening to the sutra. The Dharma of all Buddhas enables the blind to see the Buddha, and they all gain sight; the deaf can hear, the mute can speak, diseases are cured, the weak become strong, those poisoned are no longer harmed, and those with disturbed minds attain stability.

At this time, when the woman saw the Buddha, her mind immediately became stable, and she was no longer worried or sorrowful. Seeing herself naked, she felt ashamed and prostrated on the ground. The Buddha called to Ānanda: 'Take clothes and give them to the woman.' Ānanda immediately received the instruction and gave the clothes to the woman. After putting on the clothes, she bowed her head to the Buddha's feet and sat down to one side. The Buddha then spoke the sutra for her, revealing the causes of sin and blessings: 'Human life is impermanent, meetings are followed by separations, those who are born must die, and without birth there is no end. All things are essentially empty, arising and ceasing due to one's own actions, revolving in the five paths (hell, hungry ghosts, animals, humans, devas) like a wheel. Once one understands that its nature is empty, there will be no more distinctions of arising and ceasing.'

When the woman heard the Buddha's words, her mind opened and she understood. She immediately generated the unsurpassed, right, and true mind of enlightenment (Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi), and at that moment attained the stage of non-retrogression (avaivartika-bhūmi). Her sorrow and worry were dispelled, like the sun dispelling the clouds.

After the Buddha spoke these words, the fourfold assembly rejoiced and practiced accordingly. The devas and nāgas bowed their heads and withdrew.
