如是我聞:

一時,佛住王舍城耆阇崛山中,與大比丘眾二十千人俱。多有諸菩薩,謂彌勒菩薩、文殊師利等,諸大菩薩眾。

爾時,世尊于晨朝時著衣持缽,彌勒菩薩相隨,俱入王舍大城而行乞食,遂爾往到頻婆娑羅大王宮殿,到已欲入。

爾時,即見頻婆娑羅大王夫人差摩婆帝在重樓上,既見世尊心更清凈,從樓而下,敷大價衣名波都拏如來坐上,彌勒菩薩坐尼師壇。

爾時,世尊、彌勒菩薩二俱坐已。時王夫人差摩婆帝,一切莊嚴莊嚴其身,禮世尊足,並即禮敬彌勒菩薩,於世尊前斂容正坐,心生敬重,欲聞說法。

爾時世尊見王夫人差摩婆帝,一切莊嚴莊嚴身已,為欲利益一切眾生,饒益一切諸眾生故,知而故問差摩婆帝王夫人言:「差摩婆帝!彼名何樹?汝身今著如是色果,第一光明端嚴殊妙。」

時王夫人差摩婆帝,以偈答曰:

「第一大丈夫,  知而故問我,  彼樹名何樹,  汝著如是果?  彼樹名福德,  我于往世種,  此果是彼果,  我今如是食。  又已種彼樹,  于正覺聲聞,

【English Translation】 English version: The Kṣemāvatī Prophecy Sutra

Translated by Bodhiruci of the Yuan Wei Dynasty, from North India

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was dwelling on Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak) Mountain in Rājagṛha (Royal City), together with twenty thousand great Bhikṣus. There were also many Bodhisattvas, such as Maitreya (The Loving One) Bodhisattva, Mañjuśrī (Gentle Glory) and other great Bodhisattvas.

At that time, the World-Honored One, in the early morning, put on his robes, held his bowl, and with Maitreya Bodhisattva following behind, entered the great city of Rājagṛha to beg for food. Subsequently, they went to the palace of King Bimbisāra (He of the Bimba Tree), and upon arriving, prepared to enter.

At that time, (the Buddha) saw Queen Kṣemāvatī (She Who is Secure and Prosperous), the wife of King Bimbisāra, on the upper floor of a high building. Upon seeing the World-Honored One, Kṣemāvatī's mind became even more pure. She descended from the building and spread out a priceless garment called Pāṭuna (Cloth) as the Tathāgata's seat, while Maitreya Bodhisattva sat on a niṣīdana (sitting cloth).

At that time, both the World-Honored One and Maitreya Bodhisattva were seated. Then, Queen Kṣemāvatī, adorned with all kinds of ornaments, prostrated at the feet of the World-Honored One, and also paid homage to Maitreya Bodhisattva. She sat respectfully before the World-Honored One, her heart filled with reverence, desiring to hear the Dharma.

At that time, the World-Honored One, seeing that Queen Kṣemāvatī had adorned her body with all kinds of ornaments, and wishing to benefit all beings and bring prosperity to all beings, knowingly asked Queen Kṣemāvatī: 'Kṣemāvatī! What is the name of that tree? You are wearing such a colorful, supremely radiant, dignified, and wonderful fruit.'

At that time, Queen Kṣemāvatī replied in verse:

'O foremost great hero, Knowing, you still ask me, What is the name of that tree, Whose fruit you see me wear? That tree is named Merit, Planted by me in past lives, This fruit is its result, Which I now partake of. Also, I have planted that tree, For the Pratyekabuddhas and Śrāvakas,


安住菩提道,  求正覺者地。  施戒水濕潤,  令彼樹增長,  彼樹增長已,  生此端嚴果。  忍辱精進力,  能增長彼樹,  彼樹增長已,  生此無垢果。  禪慧開敷花,  令彼樹端嚴,  我今食此果,  如世尊所見。  如樹林果等,  一切依止山,  枝葉等增長,  上下皆不動。  如是彼大樹,  我前世善種,  利益諸眾生,  為得諸佛法。  如是福德樹,  我此唯其花,  我今且爾食,  果猶故在後。  第一菩提果,  無上佛菩提,  舍婦女劣身,  后必得彼果。  我當得丈夫,  眾生中上上,  一切法彼岸,  一切智遍見。  我解脫眾生,  一切苦怖畏,  一切當歸我,  愍一切眾生。」

爾時,世尊告王夫人差摩婆帝作如是言:「善哉!善哉!差摩婆帝!汝能如是利益多人,安樂多人,憐愍世間,饒益安樂一切大眾諸天人等。」

時王夫人差摩婆帝,聞佛贊已,白言世尊:「世尊!此身三十二種大丈夫相、八十種好,何因緣得十如來力、四無所畏,及四無礙?復有十八不共佛法、大慈大悲、大喜大舍,如是種種無量無等不可說盡、無數佛法從何而生?」

時王夫人差摩婆帝如是問已,佛說偈言:

Abiding in the Bodhi-mārga (path to enlightenment), seeking the realm of the perfectly enlightened ones. With the water of generosity and discipline, moistening it, causing that tree to grow. That tree having grown, it bears this upright and beautiful fruit. The power of patience and diligence is able to make that tree grow. That tree having grown, it bears this flawless fruit. Meditation and wisdom open up flowers, making that tree even more beautiful. I now eat this fruit, as seen by the World Honored One (Śākyamuni).

Like forests and fruits, all rely on the mountain, Branches and leaves grow, remaining unshaken above and below. Like that great tree, planted by me with good deeds in a previous life, To benefit all beings, to obtain the Dharma of all Buddhas.

Like this tree of merit, I now only pick its flowers, I will eat these flowers for now, the fruit is still to come. The foremost Bodhi fruit, the unsurpassed Buddha-bodhi (Buddha's enlightenment), Abandoning this inferior body of a woman, I will surely obtain that fruit in the future. I shall obtain the body of a man, the most supreme among beings, Reaching the other shore of all Dharmas, with all-encompassing wisdom and vision. I will liberate beings, from all suffering and fear, All should return to me, I will have compassion for all beings.

At that time, the World Honored One (Śākyamuni) said to Queen Kṣemāvatī, 'Excellent! Excellent! Kṣemāvatī! You are able to benefit many people in this way, bring peace and happiness to many, have compassion for the world, and benefit and bring peace and happiness to all the masses, gods, and humans.'

At that time, Queen Kṣemāvatī, having heard the Buddha's praise, said to the World Honored One (Śākyamuni), 'World Honored One (Śākyamuni)! This body possesses the thirty-two marks of a great man and the eighty minor marks; by what causes and conditions does one obtain the ten Tathāgata powers, the four fearlessnesses, and the four unobstructed eloquence? Furthermore, from where do the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, great loving-kindness, great compassion, great joy, and great equanimity, and such countless, unequaled, indescribable, and innumerable Buddha-dharmas arise?'

At that time, after Queen Kṣemāvatī asked this, the Buddha spoke in verse:


「我亦復如是,  往世種彼樹,  為利益眾生,  悕求正覺智。  修行施戒忍,  精進禪和集,  復於一切時,  恒常習禪慧。  於一切眾生,  不曾起噁心,  常行平等心,  今日得成佛。  常于愛不愛,  善友怨平等,  得平等心已,  福德樹增長。  我此身大樹,  攝無量功德,  曾為轉輪王,  亦作帝釋王,  復作大梵王,  種種多富樂,  不思議佛法,  相等今復得。」

時王夫人差摩婆帝,聞說如是諸功德已,贊言:「善哉!於世尊語極生隨喜。」即向如來而說偈言:

「如勝人中勝,  如是隨順學,  如本學善學,  無邊功德海。  我今學佛學,  諸功德彼岸,  當離生死苦,  得如是牟尼。  我本諸生處,  曾修行佈施,  愿彼一切福,  得佛無等智。  過現諸生處,  我護持禁戒,  愿彼一切福,  當得如來智。  我修忍精進,  三昧般若等,  愿如是一切,  皆成就佛法。  我身口意業,  所修行諸善,  愿得大菩提,  求佛智功德。  我舍婦女體,  得勝丈夫身,  得丈夫身已,  次第得佛身。  得勝菩提已,  轉無上法輪,  與縛生死獄,  眾生除解脫。」

當時國王的夫人差摩婆帝(Kshema,國王的夫人),聽聞了這些功德后,讚歎說:『太好了!對於世尊的話語極其隨喜。』隨即向如來說偈頌道:

『如勝者中的勝者,像這樣隨順學習,如根本所學那樣善於學習,擁有無邊的功德海。 我如今學習佛陀所學,到達諸功德的彼岸,應當脫離生死之苦,得到像牟尼(Muni,聖人)一樣的境界。 我過去生生世世,曾經修行佈施,愿那一切福德,使我獲得佛陀無與倫比的智慧。 過去和現在生生世世,我護持禁戒,愿那一切福德,使我當獲得如來的智慧。 我修習忍辱、精進,三昧(Samadhi,禪定)和般若(Prajna,智慧)等,愿像這樣的一切,都成就佛法。 我身口意所造的業,所修行的諸善,愿我獲得大菩提(Bodhi,覺悟),求得佛陀的智慧功德。 我捨棄婦女之身,得到殊勝的丈夫之身,得到丈夫之身後,次第獲得佛身。 獲得殊勝的菩提之後,轉動無上的法輪,與被束縛在生死牢獄中的眾生解除束縛,得到解脫。』

【English Translation】 English version 『I am also like this, in past lives I planted that tree, for the benefit of sentient beings, hoping to attain the wisdom of perfect enlightenment (Bodhi). Practicing giving, morality, and patience, diligence, meditation, and the collection of wisdom, and at all times, constantly practicing meditation and wisdom. Towards all sentient beings, I have never harbored evil thoughts, always practicing equanimity, and today I have attained Buddhahood. Often treating those I love and those I do not, good friends and enemies, with equanimity, and after attaining equanimity, the tree of merit grows. My body is like a great tree, encompassing immeasurable merits, having been a Chakravartin King (Universal Ruler), and also having been a Deva King (Indra, King of Gods), and also having been a Great Brahma King (Lord of the Form Realm), with all kinds of wealth and happiness, the inconceivable Buddha-dharma, now I have attained again.』

At that time, Queen Kshema (Kshema, the Queen), having heard of these merits, praised, 『Excellent! I rejoice greatly in the words of the World Honored One.』 Then she spoke the following verse to the Tathagata (Tathagata, 'Thus Gone One', an epithet of the Buddha):

『Like the best among the victors, I follow and learn in this way, like learning well from the root, possessing a boundless ocean of merit. Now I learn what the Buddha learned, reaching the other shore of all merits, I should be free from the suffering of birth and death, and attain the state of a Muni (Muni, Sage). In my past lives, I have practiced giving, may all those merits enable me to attain the Buddha's unparalleled wisdom. In past and present lives, I have upheld the precepts, may all those merits enable me to attain the Tathagata's wisdom. I cultivate patience, diligence, Samadhi (Samadhi, concentration) and Prajna (Prajna, wisdom), may all of these accomplish the Buddha-dharma. The karma created by my body, speech, and mind, all the good deeds I have cultivated, may I attain great Bodhi (Bodhi, enlightenment), seeking the wisdom and merits of the Buddha. I relinquish my female body, and attain a superior male body, and after attaining a male body, I will gradually attain the Buddha's body. After attaining supreme Bodhi, I will turn the unsurpassed Dharma wheel, and release sentient beings bound in the prison of birth and death, granting them liberation.』


爾時,世尊為王夫人差摩婆帝偈說善哉,而贊之言:

「善哉!此語說,  善哉!心善愿,  汝當破壞魔,  而得成正覺。」

時王夫人差摩婆帝,既蒙世尊現自授記,聞已歡喜,起勝上心生決定意,多奉世尊佉陀尼食、蒲阇尼食、娑陀尼食,事事豐足,如是並奉彌勒菩薩摩訶薩食。

爾時,世尊既食,食已離缽洗手。既洗手已,為王夫人差摩婆帝復更說法,示已教已,勸已導已,令歡喜已,與授記言:「差摩婆帝!汝于未來過無量劫當得作佛,號曰功德寶勝如來、應、正遍知、明行足、善逝、世間解、無上士、調御丈夫、天人師、佛、世尊。汝佛世界第一清凈,無有惡道苦惱之事,心喜心樂莊嚴殊妙,第一清凈菩薩住處。如是嚴凈佛之世界,汝當得之。」

佛說如是法門之時,有多千數諸優婆塞,一切皆發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心;多千眾生人天世間,於法不疑得隨順心。

如來說已,差摩婆帝、彌勒菩薩、一切眾會並諸天人,及阿修羅、乾闥婆等,聞世尊說,皆大歡喜。

【English Translation】 English version At that time, the World-Honored One praised Queen Kshemaavati with verses, saying 'Excellent!' and extolled her: 'Excellent! These words spoken, Excellent! The virtuous heart's wish, You shall destroy Mara, And thus attain perfect enlightenment.' Then, Queen Kshemaavati, having received the prediction directly from the World-Honored One, rejoiced upon hearing it, generated a supreme mind, and developed a resolute intention. She offered the World-Honored One abundant Khadani food (hard food), Bhojani food (soft food), and Sadhani food (drinks), providing everything in abundance. In this way, she also offered food to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya. At that time, the World-Honored One, having eaten, finished eating and washed his hands. After washing his hands, he again expounded the Dharma for Queen Kshemaavati, revealing it, teaching it, encouraging her, guiding her, and gladdening her. He then gave her a prediction, saying: 'Kshemaavati! In the future, after countless kalpas, you shall attain Buddhahood, and you will be named Guna-ratna-ketu Tathagata (Thus Come One), Arhat (Worthy One), Samyaksambuddha (Perfectly Enlightened One), Vidyacharana-sampanna (Perfect in Knowledge and Conduct), Sugata (Well-Gone), Lokavid (Knower of the World), Anuttara (Unsurpassed), Purushadamyasarathi (Tamer of Men), Shasta Devanam Manusyanam (Teacher of Gods and Humans), Buddha (Enlightened One), Bhagavan (World-Honored One). Your Buddha-world will be the most pure, free from the suffering of evil realms, filled with joy and happiness, adorned with exquisite beauty, and the dwelling place of the most pure Bodhisattvas. Such a pure and adorned Buddha-world, you shall attain it.' When the Buddha spoke this Dharma teaching, many thousands of upasakas (male lay devotees) all generated the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi-citta (unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment); many thousands of beings in the human and celestial realms, without doubt in the Dharma, attained a compliant mind. After the Thus Come One spoke, Kshemaavati, Bodhisattva Maitreya, all the assembly, and the devas (gods), asuras (demons), gandharvas (celestial musicians), and others, hearing what the World-Honored One had said, were all greatly delighted.
