如是我聞:

一時世尊在舍衛國,祇樹林給孤獨園,與大苾芻眾俱。

是時有一天子,名嗟襪曩法,天報將盡,唯餘七日,而乃先現五衰之相,身無威德,垢穢旋生,頭上花鬘,咸悉萎萃,諸身份中臭氣而出,兩腋之下悉皆汗流。時嗟襪曩法由是之故,不樂本座,宛轉于地,悲哀啼泣,而作是言:「苦哉!苦哉!曼那吉爾池;苦哉!苦哉!洗浴之池;苦哉!苦哉!寶車與粗惡歡喜雜林等,如是諸園苑,不復更遊戲;苦哉!苦哉!跛里耶多羅迦花,永不採摘,雜寶柔軟之地,永不履踐;苦哉!苦哉!天眾妓女端嚴殊妙,常所侍衛,今相舍離。」

是時有餘天子,見斯事已,往帝釋所,白言:「天主!彼嗟襪曩法,五衰現前,命餘七日,宛轉在地,悲哀啼泣。作如是言:『苦哉!苦哉!曼那吉爾,洗浴等池;苦哉!苦哉!寶車及粗惡歡喜雜林等,如是諸園苑,不復更遊戲;苦哉!苦哉!跛里耶多羅迦花,永不採摘,雜寶柔軟之地,永不履踐;苦哉!苦哉!天眾妓

一時,世尊在舍衛國(Śrāvastī),祇樹林給孤獨園(Jetavana Anathapindika-arama),與大比丘眾在一起。

當時,有一天子,名叫嗟襪曩法(Java-nna-dharma),天福將盡,只剩下七天,就先出現了五衰之相:身上沒有威德,污垢逐漸產生,頭上的花鬘全部都枯萎凋謝,身體各處散發出臭氣,兩腋之下都流著汗。當時嗟襪曩法因為這些緣故,不喜歡自己的座位,在地上打滾,悲哀地啼哭,並且這樣說:『苦啊!苦啊!曼那吉爾池(Mānas-Giri);苦啊!苦啊!洗浴之池;苦啊!苦啊!寶車和粗惡歡喜雜林等,像這樣的園苑,再也不能去遊玩了;苦啊!苦啊!跛里耶多羅迦花(Pāriyatraka),永遠不能採摘了,雜寶柔軟的土地,永遠不能踐踏了;苦啊!苦啊!天眾**端莊美麗,經常侍奉衛護,現在要互相舍離了。』

The Sutra of the Buddha Speaking on the Deva Java-nna-dharma Receiving the Three Refuges and Being Delivered from Evil Destinies

Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master, Shramana Fa Tian, bestowed with the Purple Robe, of Nalanda Monastery in Magadha, Central India, under Imperial Decree.

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the World-Honored One was in Śrāvastī, at the Jeta Grove in Anathapindika's Park, together with a great assembly of Bhikshus.

At that time, there was a Deva named Java-nna-dharma, whose heavenly reward was about to end, with only seven days remaining. The signs of the five decays manifested beforehand: his body lacked majesty and virtue, filth and impurities gradually arose, the flower garlands on his head all withered and decayed, foul odors emanated from all parts of his body, and sweat flowed from under both armpits. Because of these reasons, Java-nna-dharma did not enjoy his seat, but rolled about on the ground, weeping sadly, and saying: 'Woe! Woe! Mānas-Giri Pool; Woe! Woe! Bathing ponds; Woe! Woe! Jeweled chariots and the mixed groves of coarse pleasures, such gardens and parks, I shall no longer play in; Woe! Woe! Pāriyatraka flowers, I shall never pick again, the soft ground adorned with various jewels, I shall never tread upon again; Woe! Woe! The heavenly hosts, dignified and exquisitely beautiful, who constantly attended and protected me, now I must part from them.'

At that time, other Devas, having seen this, went to Indra and reported: 'Lord of the Devas! Java-nna-dharma is experiencing the five signs of decay, with only seven days of life remaining. He is rolling on the ground, weeping sadly, saying such words: 'Woe! Woe! Mānas-Giri, bathing ponds, and so on; Woe! Woe! Jeweled chariots and the mixed groves of coarse pleasures, such gardens and parks, I shall no longer play in; Woe! Woe! Pāriyatraka flowers, I shall never pick again, the soft ground adorned with various jewels, I shall never tread upon again; Woe! Woe! The heavenly hosts of courtesans


女,端嚴殊妙,常所侍衛,今相舍離。』天主,我見是已,心甚傷切,故來告白。」

爾時帝釋天主,心悲愍故,往嗟襪曩法所,而告之言:「天子!云何而汝賢者宛轉于地,悲哀啼泣,說諸苦事,傷動見者?」

時嗟襪曩法,忽聞是語,從地而起,整服肅容,合掌而立,白帝釋言:「天主!我今壽命唯餘七日。命終之後,墮閻浮提王舍大城,以宿業故而受豬身。天主,既受彼身,于多年中,食啖糞穢,我觀此苦,是故愁憂。」

爾時帝釋天主,聞是語已,心甚悲愍,告嗟襪曩法天子言:「賢者,汝可誠心歸命三寶。應作是言:『歸依佛兩足尊,歸依法離欲尊,歸依僧眾中尊。』」時彼嗟襪曩法天子,以死怖故,畏傍生故,白帝釋言:「憍尸迦!我今歸依佛兩足尊,歸依法離欲尊,歸依僧眾中尊。」時彼天子,受三歸已,心不間斷,以至命終。

諸天之法,下智有見,不能觀上。時帝釋天主,觀彼天子,生於何處,為生南閻浮提王舍大城受豬身耶?為不受豬身?盡彼天眼,觀之不見。又觀傍生鬼界,亦復不見;又觀娑訶世界人間,亦復不見;乃至四大王眾天,及忉利天,盡彼觀察,都不能見。

爾時帝釋天主,既不見已,心生疑慮。於是帝釋往祇樹林,詣世尊所,頂禮佛足,退坐一面

諸天的能力,下等智慧只能看到下面的情況,不能看到上面的情況。當時帝釋天主(Indra,帝釋天)觀察那位天子,看他投生到何處,是投生到南閻浮提(Jambudvipa,人世間)的王舍大城(Rajagrha,古印度城市名)受豬身了嗎?還是沒有受豬身?用盡他的天眼,也看不到。又觀察畜生道和鬼道,也同樣看不到;又觀察娑婆世界(Saha World,我們所居住的世界)的人間,也同樣看不到;乃至四大王眾天(Caturmaharajika Heaven,四大天王所居住的天界),以及忉利天(Trayastrimsa Heaven,欲界第二天),用盡他的觀察力,都不能看到。

當時帝釋天主(Indra,帝釋天)既然看不到,心中產生了疑惑。於是帝釋天(Indra,帝釋天)前往祇樹林(Jetavana,佛陀常住的精舍),來到世尊(The World-Honored One,佛陀的尊稱)所在之處,頂禮佛足,退到一旁坐下。

【English Translation】 English version: 'That beautiful and dignified celestial maiden, who always attended me, is now about to leave me.' Lord Indra (Indra, the lord of the devas), seeing this, my heart is deeply saddened, and so I come to inform you.'

At that time, Lord Indra (Indra, the lord of the devas), with a compassionate heart, went to lament with Chu-sa-wa-na-fa (Chu-sa-wa-na-fa, name of a deva), and said to him: 'Celestial being! Why is it that you, a wise one, are prostrate on the ground, weeping in sorrow, recounting various sufferings, causing those who see you to be saddened?'

At that time, Chu-sa-wa-na-fa (Chu-sa-wa-na-fa, name of a deva), suddenly hearing these words, arose from the ground, straightened his robes, composed his countenance, joined his palms, and said to Lord Indra (Indra, the lord of the devas): 'Lord! My lifespan is now only seven days remaining. After my life ends, I will fall into the great city of Rajagrha (Rajagrha, name of an ancient Indian city) in Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, the human world), and due to past karma, I will receive the body of a pig. Lord, once I receive that body, for many years I will eat filth and excrement. I contemplate this suffering, and therefore I am sorrowful.'

At that time, Lord Indra (Indra, the lord of the devas), hearing these words, felt great compassion in his heart, and said to the deva Chu-sa-wa-na-fa (Chu-sa-wa-na-fa, name of a deva): 'Wise one, you should sincerely take refuge in the Three Jewels (Triratna). You should say these words: 'I take refuge in the Buddha (Buddha, the awakened one), the Honored One with Two Feet; I take refuge in the Dharma (Dharma, the teachings of the Buddha), the Honored One free from desires; I take refuge in the Sangha (Sangha, the monastic community), the Honored One among the assembly.' At that time, that deva Chu-sa-wa-na-fa (Chu-sa-wa-na-fa, name of a deva), because of the fear of death and the dread of being born into the animal realm, said to Indra (Indra, the lord of the devas): 'Kausika (Kausika, another name for Indra)! I now take refuge in the Buddha (Buddha, the awakened one), the Honored One with Two Feet; I take refuge in the Dharma (Dharma, the teachings of the Buddha), the Honored One free from desires; I take refuge in the Sangha (Sangha, the monastic community), the Honored One among the assembly.' At that time, that deva, having received the Three Refuges, maintained his mindfulness without interruption, until the end of his life.

The abilities of the devas are such that lower wisdom can only see what is below, and cannot see what is above. At that time, Lord Indra (Indra, the lord of the devas) observed that deva, to see where he was reborn, whether he was reborn in the great city of Rajagrha (Rajagrha, name of an ancient Indian city) in Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, the human world) and received the body of a pig, or whether he did not receive the body of a pig. He exhausted his divine eye, but could not see him. He also observed the animal realm and the realm of ghosts, but also could not see him; he also observed the human realm of the Saha World (Saha World, the world we live in), but also could not see him; even the Heaven of the Four Great Kings (Caturmaharajika Heaven, the heaven where the Four Heavenly Kings reside) and the Trayastrimsa Heaven (Trayastrimsa Heaven, the second heaven of the desire realm), he exhausted his observation, but could not see him at all.

At that time, Lord Indra (Indra, the lord of the devas), since he could not see him, became doubtful in his heart. Thereupon, Indra (Indra, the lord of the devas) went to Jetavana (Jetavana, the monastery where the Buddha often stayed), approached the World-Honored One (The World-Honored One, the title of the Buddha), bowed at the Buddha's feet, and withdrew to sit on one side.


,白佛言:「世尊!彼嗟襪曩法天子,五衰現前,命在七日,宛轉在地,悲哀啼泣,說諸苦事,傷動見者。我時到彼,見此事已,而問之言:『云何賢者,悲啼懊惱,憔悴若此?』時嗟襪曩法,而告我言:『我今壽命,唯餘七日。命終之後,墮閻浮提,生王舍城,而受豬身,于多年中以諸糞穢而為食啖。』我聞此說,心極悲愍,乃告之言:『今汝賢者,欲脫斯苦,當歸命三寶。作如是言:「歸依佛兩足尊,歸依法離欲尊,歸依僧眾中尊。」』時嗟襪曩法,以死怖故,畏傍生故,而白我言:『我今歸依佛兩足尊,歸依法離欲尊,歸依僧眾中尊。』時嗟襪曩法,受三歸竟,而後命終。世尊,我今不知,彼嗟襪曩法,託生何處?」

爾時世尊,以正遍知,告帝釋言:「憍尸迦!今嗟襪曩法天子,已生睹史多天,受五欲樂。」

爾時帝釋天主,聞佛語已,歡喜踴躍,心意快然,諸根圓滿。即于佛前,說伽陀曰:

「若歸依于佛,  彼不墮惡道,  棄捨人身已,  當獲得天身;  若歸依於法,  彼不墮惡道,  棄捨人身已,  當獲得天身;  若歸依于僧,  彼不墮惡道,  棄捨人身已,  當獲得天身。」

復說伽陀曰:

「誠心歸命佛,  彼人當所得,  若晝若夜中,  佛

【English Translation】 English version: The Buddha said to Shakra (Shakra, a deity): 'World Honored One! That Cueva Nanga Dharma Deva (Cueva Nanga Dharma, name of a deity) is experiencing the five signs of decay, with only seven days left to live. He writhes on the ground, weeping in sorrow, recounting his sufferings, moving those who see him. Say these words: 'I take refuge in the Buddha, the Honored One with two feet; I take refuge in the Dharma, the Honored One free from desire; I take refuge in the Sangha, the Honored One among the assembly.' Then Cueva Nanga Dharma, fearing death and the animal realm, said to me: 'I now take refuge in the Buddha, the Honored One with two feet; I take refuge in the Dharma, the Honored One free from desire; I take refuge in the Sangha, the Honored One among the assembly.' After Cueva Nanga Dharma took the Three Refuges, he passed away. World Honored One, I do not know where Cueva Nanga Dharma has been reborn?' Then the World Honored One, with perfect knowledge (perfect knowledge, the wisdom of the Buddha), said to Shakra (Shakra, a deity): 'Kausika (Kausika, another name for Shakra)! That Cueva Nanga Dharma Deva has already been reborn in the Tushita Heaven (Tushita, one of the heavens in the desire realm), enjoying the pleasures of the five desires.' Then Shakra, Lord of the Devas, hearing the Buddha's words, rejoiced and was elated, his mind at ease, his faculties complete. 心常憶念;  誠心歸命法,  彼人當所得,  若晝若夜中,  法力常加持;  誠心歸命僧,  彼人當所得,  若晝若夜中,  僧威常覆護。」

爾時帝釋天主說伽陀已,世尊印言:「如是如是。

「歸命佛法僧,  定不墮惡道;  棄捨人身已,  當獲得天身。」

爾時世尊說伽陀曰:

「若佛陀二字,  得到于舌上,  同彼歸命等,  不虛過一生;  若達磨二字,  得到于舌上,  同彼歸命等,  不虛過一生;  若僧伽二字,  得到于舌上,  同彼歸命等,  不虛過一生。」

又說偈言:

「佛法僧名若不知,  彼人最下故不獲,  輪迴宛轉而久處,  如迦尸花住虛空。」

佛說是經已,諸苾芻眾,天帝釋等,一切大眾,歡喜信受,作禮而退。

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本: 心中常常憶念; 如果誠心歸命於法(Dharma,佛法),這個人應當有所得, 無論白天還是夜晚,佛法的力量常常加持他; 如果誠心歸命于僧(Sangha,僧團),這個人應當有所得, 無論白天還是夜晚,僧團的威德常常覆蓋保護他。

這時,帝釋天主(Śakra-devānām-Indra,天神之王)說了偈頌后,世尊(Bhagavan,佛陀)印可說:『是這樣的,是這樣的。』

『歸命于佛(Buddha)、法(Dharma)、僧(Sangha),必定不會墮入惡道; 捨棄人身之後,應當獲得天人的身體。』

這時,世尊(Bhagavan,佛陀)說了偈頌:

『如果『佛陀(Buddha)』二字,能夠到達舌頭上, 如同他歸命一樣,不會虛度一生; 如果『達磨(Dharma)』二字,能夠到達舌頭上, 如同他歸命一樣,不會虛度一生; 如果『僧伽(Sangha)』二字,能夠到達舌頭上, 如同他歸命一樣,不會虛度一生。』

又說了偈頌:

『如果佛(Buddha)、法(Dharma)、僧(Sangha)的名字都不知道,這個人最為下劣所以不能獲得解脫, 在輪迴中輾轉而長久地處於痛苦之中,就像迦尸花(Kāśī flower)住在虛空中一樣。』

佛陀(Buddha)說完這部經后,各位比丘(bhikṣu,出家修行者),天帝釋(Śakra-devānām-Indra,天神之王)等一切大眾,歡喜信受,作禮後退下。

【English Translation】 English version: Constantly remember in your heart; If one sincerely takes refuge in the Dharma, that person shall attain benefit, Whether day or night, the power of the Dharma will always bless them; If one sincerely takes refuge in the Sangha, that person shall attain benefit, Whether day or night, the majesty of the Sangha will always cover and protect them."

At that time, Śakra-devānām-Indra (Lord of the Devas) spoke a gatha, and the Bhagavan (the World-Honored One) affirmed, 'So it is, so it is.'

'Taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, one will certainly not fall into evil realms; Having abandoned the human body, one shall obtain a heavenly body.'

At that time, the Bhagavan (the World-Honored One) spoke the following gatha:

'If the two words 'Buddha' reach the tongue, It is like taking refuge, and one's life will not be spent in vain; If the two words 'Dharma' reach the tongue, It is like taking refuge, and one's life will not be spent in vain; If the two words 'Sangha' reach the tongue, It is like taking refuge, and one's life will not be spent in vain.'

He further spoke the following verse:

'If one does not know the names of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, that person is the most inferior and cannot attain liberation, Revolving in samsara and dwelling in suffering for a long time, like a Kāśī flower dwelling in empty space.'

After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, all the bhikṣus (monks), Śakra-devānām-Indra (Lord of the Devas), and all the great assembly, rejoiced, believed, accepted, paid homage, and withdrew.
